Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced the implementation of the mandatory National Milk Testing Strategy, required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. This comprehensive program aims to bolster highly pathogenic avian influenza surveillance of the nation’s dairy cattle herds, ensuring swift action to identify and address H5N1-affected herds. Under the NMTS, Wisconsin will soon initiate mandatory monthly milk sampling. With help from industry partners, it is expected that one milk sample will be obtained per dairy farm each month and tested at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. These samples will primarily be gathered through existing milk quality labs that work with Licensed Bulk Milk Weighers and Samplers, ensuring minimal disruption to dairy operations while obtaining farm-level results.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of NeedleXChange I interview Neil Twist, an academic and self-confessed beginner stitcher based in Melbourne. Neil's just a year into his embroidery journey, but already he's exploring big questions about masculinity, perception, and what it means to stitch as a man. We talk about the courage it takes to embroider in public, the reactions you get – both expected and surprising – and how those quiet moments with needle and thread can spark real social reflection. Neil's experience as a gay man brings a rich and thoughtful perspective to the conversation, especially as we compare how our respective identities shape our paths in textile art. This wasn't planned as a NeedleXChange but it was such a good chat Neil allowed me to share it!Timestamps: 00:00:00 - Intro00:01:30 - Courage in Needlework: A Gender Perspective00:04:32 - Public Perception and Personal Anecdotes00:07:36 - Exploring the Embroiderers Guild Experience00:10:29 - Cultural Connections Through Needlework00:13:42 - The Historical Context of Needlework in Australia00:16:32 - The Role of Samplers in Education and Morality00:19:35 - The Evolution of Needlework Practices00:22:39 - Cross-Stitch: A Gateway Craft and Its PotentialIntro music is Zulu by Lucas Pittman via Epidemic Sound.About NeedleXChange:NeedleXChange is a conversation podcast with embroidery and textile artists, exploring their process and practice.Hosted by Jamie "Mr X Stitch" Chalmers, it is an in-depth showcase of the best needlework artists on the planet.Visit the NeedleXChange website: https://www.needl.exchange/Sign up for the NeedleXChange Newsletter here: https://bit.ly/NeedleXChangeNewsIf you want embroidery inspiration and regular doses of textile art, visit the Mr X Stitch site here: https://www.mrxstitch.comIf you're looking for modern cross stitch designs, then XStitch is the magazine you need!Subscribe to XStitch Magazine here: https://xstitchmag.com/modern-cross-stitch-magazine/And follow Mr X Stitch on all the usual social media channels!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MrXStitchTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/MrXStitchInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/MrXStitchPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/mrxstitch/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrjamiechalmers Hosted on Acast. Today we're joined by Mike Rugnetta, a sound explorer of many forms. We get into music, podcasting, and a bit of sonic philosophy. Mike teaches us about field recorders, specifically the Sound Devices MixPre-3, and how they've been a part of his creative output through the years. Expect discussions of the meditative nature of capturing and manipulating sound, the value of a ping pong ball, and why Mike nearly chose a hard drive as his object. POOLcast 093 - PLO Our August issue brings you another live improvised recording from our very own project PLO. For this recording ANN, Dr.Nojoke, Waldboot and The Artist Formerly Known as From Karaoke to Stardom came together with a whole truckload of music hardware. Samplers, grooveboxes, keyboards, guitar pedals, synthesizers and more create a unique vibe at the PLO sessions right from the set up and sound check. The unpredictable combination of all the instruments, effects and ideas, which are completely recombined from session to session, create a breeding ground of creativity for the artists attending the session. With the goal of allowing as few mental filters as possible to come between artistic intuition and the piece. To create an environment in which the participating artists allow the purest form of art. It is therefore also unnecessary to use typical musical phrases to classify the resulting work. The consumption of such artworks should also be enjoyed with as little bias as possible. About: PTNA aka Justin Olson began his music journey with the Violin at age 3. By the time he was in college, Justin shared his songs in live performances and open mics building confidence as a performer, and learn the satisfaction of sharing his creations with the world. As an artist, it is easy to become lost in your head and process, live performance is a very important tool to receive feedback and input that guides your creative output and can give you the needed confidence to share it with the world. Since 2014, Justin has focused on creating musical projects, performances and albums on his Eurorack Modular. He has released 20 + albums of music during this time-frame and has enjoyed the process of patching a song over hours to days and then performing it live and capturing the performance. Justin has performed around the state of Arizona including: Tempe Center for the Arts “ Singer Songwriters Showcase” in partnership with PBS, “Knock the Blues out of Hunger” Blues Festival, Glendale Folk Festival, Weekly “Fun Fridays” at the Tempe Center for the Arts and most recently, a live Eurorack Modular Performance at , “ Wireheads” in downtown Phoenix. Justin enjoys introducing people to Modular synthesis and being a knowledgeable resource to expose and bring students into the area of study and creation. Historical Exhibitions Opening Saturday June 18, 2022 Sharon, CT: The Sharon Historical Society & Museum is pleased to announce the exhibit, Sharon Collects: Samplers from the Collection of Alexandra Peters. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 5-7PM. SHARON COLLECTS: Samplers from the Collection of Alexandra Peters Before adding a sampler to her collection, Sharon, CT resident Alexandra Peters researched the lives of the sampler makers and the world revealed by their needlework. The girls in this collection were touched by abolition, the Underground Railroad, and the anti-slavery movement. A few girls settled the Connecticut Western Reserve, others were educated at the three exceptional academies for girls in northwest Connecticut. Quaker girls created elegant darning samplers, and older girls stitched elaborate tales from classical history and literature. Some girls in England sewed world maps. Other girls in the United States documented their family histories, sisters worked companion samplers, and the women of Nathaniel Hawthorne's family subtly influenced his storytelling with their needlework. Writing with needles, these sampler creators left us a powerful legacy that opens a window into the early education of girls, who their families were, and how they documented their very existence. Sharon Historical Society & Museum is located at 18 Main Street in Sharon, CT. Museum hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 4:00 PM, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and by appointment. Admission is free. For more information and directions, call (860) 364-5688 or visit www.sharonhist.org

Samplers tell stories in stitch, but whose tale are they telling? Perhaps the story of a young woman describing her family and choosing her own patterns and pictures, a child learning her alphabet and numbers by stitching. Or maybe it's an anonymous sampler from a woman being prepared for a role in which she will spend a life stitching other people's stories, effacing her identity, working as a seamstress or a servant. This episode of Haptic and Hue looks at how women in the past were united by their ability to use a needle. From the grandest monarch to the poorest maid they could all sew, it was a common language – one that they were fluent in and often better at than forming letters and numbers with a pen or pencil. It gave them a way of thinking that we have all but lost. But what they sewed divided them. Middle-class women were urged to create a home with berlin wool-work, firescreens, and antimacassars, or handstitched gifts demonstrating their skill and devotion. Even Queen Victoria stitched and gave away her handiwork while working-class women were prepared for a life of earning their living from the needle – working as seamstresses or mending clothing, stitching other people's initials onto table linen, and family laundry. Find out more about how the needle and sewing united and divided women in this episode of Haptic and Hue's Tales of Textiles. Beginning Jan. 1, Wisconsin hemp growers must have their hemp sampled by USDA-certified hemp sampling agents. This is a fee-for-service opportunity that DATCP previously performed, DATCP Bureau Director Brian Kuhn explains. Beginning in 2022, the USDA will operate Wisconsin's hemp program, and DATCP will no longer provide hemp sampling and testing services. The hemp sampling service will be provided by the private sector, and this is an opportunity to expand services offered to agricultural producers or to become an independent USDA-certified hemp sampling agent. HAL is a Drill n' Bass and Braindance producer from Detroit Michigan. HAL has releases with Labels such as Pr0gramma, and most recently Detroit Underground. Heavily influenced by influential labels such as Rephlex, and Warp Records, old XOX boxes, tracker breaks, 90's Samplers, and Romplers make up for a majority of the soundscapes.
Derived from the Latin word ‘exemplum' or Old French term ‘essamplaire' meaning example, Samplers were a way to reference various designs, types of stitches and their textures, becoming a personal authority or aide-mémoire to record and trial multiple complex stitching techniques, featuring moralising texts, pictorial motifs as well as alphabets, numerals and personal information.

Miles flies solo and reviews some promotional music for you. The episode has a few very heavy metal songs, so if you're not into this episode, it's understandable. I hope you like it and that Victory Records and Equal Vision records do not get mad at me for featuring music that they gave away for free...

I've been working on my new book “Toilet Paper Math”. Last week I talked about the three "P"s of Thought Leadership and I would be remiss if I did not interject some potty humor. That's why I am calling this a Pu-Pu Platter of content. A Pu-Pu Platter is a selection of Chinese food that lets you sample before you order the main course. You can do the same thing with your content. No matter how big or small, you can grab pieces that create appetizers. Then people can sample to get a taste of what you are presenting. You can create a content ecosystem by sampling parts of your blogs, webinars podcasts, video, presentation, and more, and creating bite-sized chunks that attract people to your main course. I will give you some great ideas about how you can incorporate and sample all of these: The Pu-Pu Platter Live Presentations or Classes Webinars Video Audio & Podcasts Ebooks Blogs Infographics Awareness Graphics In this episode, we dig into the sampler and how you can use each type of content to create marketing appetizers to attract your perfect customer to the main course... A week after the soft launch and Christy has learned one thing.......samples will be the key to her businesses success. She has given away nearly 500 Cryopop samples down at Mallory Square as she tried to build her business. Now she grapples with the issue of turning a large portion of the samplers into buyers. Because Cryopop is frozen, giving out samples is a challenge. It must be consumed immediately. If not, the impression of the product is terrible. At the same time, many will try and only some will buy. Now she has to figure out who the buyers are and who can be influenced to buy. This is going to become an experiment in human behavior. Follow Christy as she figures it out.
