What happens when a child learns they are 'worth' $80 every two weeks? Today on Money Tales, our guest is Melissa Ripp, an entrepreneur who reflects on how her childhood experiences—like learning the amount her dad paid in child support—deeply shaped her relationship with money. We'll explore how those early lessons influenced her entrepreneurial journey and her drive for financial independence. This conversation goes deep into the emotional side of money and the lasting impact of those early money moments. Melissa “Mel” Ripp is an engaging keynote speaker, proud entrepreneur, and passionate Wisconsinite who believes that everyone—no matter where they're from, what they do, or who they do it for—has something incredible to offer the world. With over 20 years of experience in nonprofit and corporate marketing and communications, Mel has guided several organizations in a variety of niches and industries—performing arts and music, historic preservation, tourism, K-12 education and education technology, manufacturing, insurance and finance, healthcare, and social services in telling their stories and communicating their “whys” to their audiences. Jumping into full-time entrepreneurship six years ago, Mel is the founder and CEO of Peapod Marketing & PR Consulting, a marketing and thought leadership consultancy that works to elevate the ideas and perspectives of women executives and entrepreneurs by helping them develop an authentic platform for their expertise through messaging development, social media and content creation, and public relations strategies. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in English with a Creative Writing emphasis and a Communication Arts degree with an emphasis in Radio, Film, and Television production. When she's not working with clients or dreaming up her next big idea, Mel is probably hanging out with her two biggest fans—husband Zack and cat Poseidon, driving with the music cranked down a country road in her home of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, or buying yet another houseplant for her office. Houseplant count: 43.

Pierre Rougier, a distinguished fashion publicist and founder of PR Consulting, boasts a career spanning several decades. After studying political science in Bordeaux, Rougier honed his skills in Paris and London with Hermès, Yohji Yamamoto, and Maison Margiela before making his mark in New York in 1993. There, he directed communications while representing icons like Helmut Lang and Alexander McQueen. Establishing PR Consulting in1997, he catapulted emerging talents like Narciso Rodriguez and Nicolas Ghesquiere, then at Balenciaga, to prominence, also fostering brands like Proenza Schouler and Hood By Air. Renowned for discovering and championing young designers, Rougier continues to hold the opinion that a strong vision and sometimes counter-trending codes are often the precursors to a designer's success. Episode Highlights: Rougier grew up far from the front of culture, and though his interests in fashion were indirect at first until he moved to Bordeaux—a larger city—to study.  He started his work in fashion boxing Hermes products before moving to London, still employed at Hermes, learning English and partaking in '80s gay club culture there. Yohji Yamamoto employed Rougier to work a PR position, giving him his first taste of serious work and long hours associated with the industry. Using his London connections, he opened his own PR firm as the Antwerp Six were coming into the spotlight, and worked under Martin Margiela for four years, until he felt that his aesthetic and vision were too overwhelmingly connected to that one house. Moving to New York, Rougier worked as communications director for a company that held brands like Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, and Michael Kors. Rougier speaks on learning that the antithesis of what's trending is always on the precipice of an arrival. He says the conversations in fashion are less now about what designers like and more about what designers find that works, and is successful.  Before the internet, there were few photos of shows and most people waited to see items in stores to determine the zeitgeist; now, Rougier says, the urgency of marketing makes everything “extremely transactional.”  He says it's fair to say that in fashion, elitism has trended out with a shift to exclusive community identities. Storytelling Strategies for Small Businesses

“One of the things that I think is really important is trying to find that Venn diagram between the questions and the things that you can confidently speak about. And then, thinking about what you want your target audience to take from that,” explains Melissa Ripp, Owner and Founder of Pea Pod Marketing and PR Consulting, a full service marketing communications firm for female entrepreneurs and executives. Today, Melissa joins host Kiley Peters to talk about the best storytelling strategies for small businesses. Melissa was in third grade when she realized she wanted to be a writer. And ever since, she has set out to use her expertise to help female entrepreneurs and executives craft the best possible stories for their brands. While there are several ways to go about this, the common factor is vulnerability and a willingness to share personal stories from your past. People are often taught to believe that vulnerability is equal to weakness, but actually it can be a strength as it helps people connect more to you and your story and can be a way to showcase your authenticity. Some ways to be more comfortable with storytelling are to make a list of topics you feel confident speaking about, consider key learnings that have worked for you and your business, think about your origin story or times from your past that have gotten you to where you are today, and consider your personal value set and times in your life that your values have come into play. Storytelling is a great way to connect with your audience on a deeper level. People are more likely to want to work with businesses that they feel reflect their own values and business owners who feel relatable and authentic. It can be intimidating to peel back the layers of yourself and be vulnerable publicly, but it can do wonders for your business growth. Quotes“I really wanted to help women understand that they can feel empowered to do all of those things on their own. It just starts by sharing their story.” (3:38-3:48 | Melissa)“One of the things that I just think is really important is trying to find that Venn diagram between the questions and the things that you can confidently speak about, and then, kind of thinking about what you want your target audience to take from that.” (5:51-6:08 | Melissa)“Every single thing you go through in your life is all writing material.” (17:23-17:27 | Melissa)“I do start a lot of my thought leadership and storytelling clients on LinkedIn just because I feel like it is a great way to A.) not only get your thoughts out quickly, but also B.) it really serves as a nice testing ground for confidence.” (22:40-22:56 | Melissa)“I've had a ton of people that have said, what got me most comfortable and talking about myself was talking about myself in the context of other things and other people. And that made it a bit easier to pull off or pull apart those baby onions and start kind of getting to the core of me.” (41:32-41:50 | Melissa)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with Melissa RippLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissaripp/Instagram: @peapodmelWebsite:

Giles started his career at mid-sized agency Infopress on Fleet St when the papers were all still there and he spent four years pitching stories to journalists in the newsrooms and pubs.He then moved on to work in the communications strategy team at management consultants PA Consulting.During this time he studied for an MBA in the evenings at Cass Business School. He then moved in-house to IT services firm Logica where he oversaw all its global communications. In 1995, he left Logica to take on the role of MD of Hill and Knowlton’s tech team and, over the next five years, grew the revenues of this division ten-fold.Giles launched Brands2Life in 2000 alongside co-founder Sarah Scales. He lives in Barnes with his wife, Alex and three daughters. Here’s a summary of what Giles and I talked about: [00:01:24] What advice Giles would offer to people who are thinking about setting up their own firm today. [00:01:57] How having a great corporate partner (as opposed to doing it on your own) can make launching a business a lot easier. [00:03:31] Why when launching a business you need to decide what sort of business you're going to have - are you going to have basically a lifestyle business or are you going to have a growth business?[00:03:52] What are the tensions between a growth business and a lifestyle business? [00:05:58] Giles identifies two important periods of his career which influenced the success of Brands2Life.
