The Darlington Economic Campus is rapidly establishing itself as the civil service's flagship office outside of London – and has been described by chancellor Jeremy Hunt as moving “decision makers and advisers closer to the communities we serve.”  So how has the Darlington Economic Campus changed the way policy is made? What difference has it made to the local area and is it contributing to the levelling up agenda? What are the factors behind the campus's success and should it be used as a blueprint for future relocations? His expertise centres on utilising transformative technologies such as AI, VR/AR, blockchain, quantum computing, and robotics to reimagine business landscapes. Claus joins Jeannette to talk about why the world of business is embracing technology as a way of enhancing its offering to the world, and the fascinating ways in which technology can aid us in hitherto undreamt of ways. KEY TAKEAWAYS The shipping industry is looking to replace its fleets with greener alternatives, which led Claus to Binex, and the solutions that it can offer. The shift to greener ways of working was always based upon cost savings, but now the initiatives seem to centre around a far more responsible outlook for the world. Tech means that outdated fossil fuels can be replaced with much more efficient new forms of fuelling that burn hotter, and allow older, more destructive means, such as coal, to be retired forever. Not only can the new technologies provide new sources of food and energy, but also income streams for marginalised communities who have seen their prosperity levels drop in recent generations. It's a global win win for humanity BEST MOMENTS 'At Binex we have the opportunity to use green energy using the latest tech possible' 'This allows us to replace coal in coal-fired plants!' 'We can offer a better approach to make energy and food' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. However, underneath all of it is his passion for clean energy. In this episode, Martin shares his early beginnings as a first-generation American, his career pivot and how his experience at Haas helped him with the transition, and what he does at PA Consulting as a Principal Consultant.Martin also talks about the future of clean and renewable energy and the new technologies people should be excited about.Episode Quotes:On choosing accounting and finance as his college degreeAt the time, it was essentially a safety decision because I knew no matter what was going on with the economy, no matter what happens, you're going get paid in a career in accounting. Accountants are always needed, whether the economy's doing well or not. And I also thought about it as understanding the language of business, and it opens potential new opportunities for me in the future. His passion for clean energyI don't really have one of those interesting origin stories, necessarily. I didn't see my house get swept away by a rainstorm. I didn't see, you know, anything crazy happen with being in a drought. But I do remember my junior year of high school, I was in an AP environmental science class, and at this point in time, it was pretty much peak emissions for the entire globe. And I think at the time, the United States was getting 70 to 80% of their power from coal, and the big Hummer came out. Everything was bragging about that, and I just had this feeling of desperation. What are we doing to our planet? Things are getting worse, and we were still burning so much coal and driving Hummers. There's not really a clear, viable path for us to get off of fossil fuels as a society.Show Links:Martin Szczepanik on LinkedInBHAN-NYC LinkedIn GroupBerkeley Haas Alumni Network NYCSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

More than ever, creating an organization that responds to customer's needs, cares for and inspires employees, embraces purpose, emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion, and helps a firm become future-ready — all boil down to one thing: leadership. While conversations about the importance of a disruptive mindset started well before the pandemic, the crisis accelerated the need for strong leadership significantly. The question becomes how ready is existing leadership to lead an organization to success during uncertain times? My guest on the Banking Transformed podcast is Charlene Li – Chief Research Officer, PA Consulting. Charlene shares how leadership can better embrace change, accept risks, and help organizations become future-ready.

With change constantly happening in the world around us, it's crucial for organizations to have structures and systems in place that will allow them to navigate disruptions with agility. While changing circumstances can create formidable obstacles for some organizations, Charlene Li – our guest in Episode 106 of The MINDSet Game® podcast – has always been curious about those that can seemingly move from disruption to disruption without skipping a beat. As Chief Research Officer at PA Consulting, an end-to-end innovation consultancy, Charlene has studied organizations across numerous industries to identify the characteristics that make leaders, teams, and the organization as a whole better equipped to handle change. In this episode, Charlene outlines the three key things that organizations need in order to seamlessly move from disruption to disruption: an ability to focus on the needs of future customers, leaders who can create a movement and momentum to carry the organization into the future, and a culture that's capable of dealing with flux. Within this framework, she shares specific insights, including: 3 questions that everyone in an organization – from senior leadership to frontline workers – should be able to answer regarding how the organization will serve future customers How leaders can attract followers to the movement they are seeking to create, even when dealing with individuals whose values may not align with that movement Signs that indicate that a movement towards change is successfully underway The consequences for organizations that resist creating a “flux culture” designed to help them navigate disruption  To learn more about Charlene, visit her website at https://www.charleneli.com.
