When it opened in 1894, the Preston School of Industry represented a change in how criminal offenders and wards of the state were treated in American society, shifting towards a more compassionate mission of reform over punishment. In a rural area of California sits a building atop a hill that resembles a castle. The Preston School of Industry was a proposed as a reform school and was used to house wards, or minors under the guardianship of the state.Today the building is a historic landmark and according to historians, volunteers and paranormal investigators, some of the spirits of the boys who were housed there, and a few employees, are still roaming the halls. Investigator Connie Brenner and administrator Sybil Griffith share some of their paranormal experiences in the historic landmark.

I believe I had my first paranormal experience when I was really young (I think around 5yrs old) and it wasn’t until I went to a show and saw Ed and Lorraine Warren in Connecticut in 1994 where I really became super interested in the paranormal. Years later my friend and I got together for our weekly Ghost Hunter’s viewing and discussed how fun it would be to go ghost hunting. We found a local group and started attending investigations. Perched on a hill above the town of Ione in California is a menacing and haunting castle-like structure that once was a reform school. The Preston Castle was an ambitious plan to get juvenile delinquents to become contributing members of the community. But as was the case with so many of these types of places that were built in the late 1800s and run through the early 1900s, abuse, overcrowding and death were commonplace. The emotional residue of this location seems to have led to haunting experiences.
