Leerlingen kunnen keurig een stappenplan nadoen en tóch nauwelijks beter wiskundig leren denken. Voor veel leerlingen op de middelbare school gaat wiskunde over het correct ‘herhalen’ wat de docent voordoet op het bord. Is het ook mogelijk een werkomgeving te creëren waar leerlingen uitgedaagd worden om zelfstandig en diep te leren nadenken over wiskundige problemen? Dat is de zoektocht waar ik met Matthias Kaat over doorpraat: wiskunde draait fundamenteel om probleemoplossen, redeneren en het opdoen van inzicht, maar in veel lokalen overheerst vooral een “voordoen–nadoen–oefenen” methodiek. De vraag is dan ongemakkelijk simpel: leren leerlingen eigenlijk wel goed wiskunde? Matthias Kaat is lerarenopleider wiskunde en is aan de slag gegaan met het boek Building Thinking Classrooms (Peter Liljedahl) als een praktische benadering om wiskundig denken zichtbaar en collectief te maken. Niet door leerlingen “zomaar wat te laten doen”, maar door juist te werken met slimme klas routines: bijvoorbeeld met steeds willekeurige drietallen, door staand te werken, de klas anders in te richten en aan de slag te gaan op whiteboards met een prikkelende en uitdagend wiskundig vraagstuk. Fouten maken wordt minder riskant, ideeën worden makkelijker gedeeld en “didactisch afkijken” wordt onderdeel van de lespraktijk. Leerlingen leren hierdoor dieper nadenken is het idee. Belangrijk is ook de nuance: dit is geen alles-of-niets werkwijze. Divergente problemen (met meerdere aanpakken) en convergente taken (gericht oefenen) versterken elkaar. Liljedahl put uit 15 jaar praktijkonderzoek en brengt wiskundige vraagstukken tot leven in de lespraktijk. We bespreken tot slot ook hoe je deze werkwijze kunt adopteren in je klaslokaal. Mijn gast iemand die al zijn hele leven in dit land woont, maar die toch steeds opnieuw moet uitleggen dat hij erbij hoort. Sofyan Mbarki is geboren en getogen in Amsterdam, zoon van Marokkaanse ouders. Docent, jongerenwerker, raadslid en nu wethouder van Amsterdam. November 2024 stond Amsterdam wereldwijd negatief in de schijnwerpers door de Maccabi Tel Aviv hooligans Na geweld en onrust klonk vanuit Den Haag één zin:  “We hebben een integratieprobleem.” Sofyan hoorde die woorden… en voelde zich aangesproken. Aangesproken als bestuurder, als vader en als Amsterdammer. Hij reageerde met één zin die alles openbrak:  “Ik ben het integratieprobleem.” Die zin werd een boek. “Maar jij bent een goeie”   over erbij horen, dubbele standaarden, jongeren, onderwijs, boosheid en hoop. En over de vraag die onder alles ligt: “Wie mag zich eigenlijk thuis voelen in Nederland?”

"Maak van je klas een team!" In aflevering 319 van de Professional vanuit je hart Podcast praat ik verder met @Esther Wokke. Waarom moet een klas eigenlijk een team worden.  Esther vertelt hoe zij het vak omgangskunde op haar school vormgeeft. Ze gaat met leerlingen het echte gesprek aan: waarom doe je wat je doet – en wat heb jij én de ander nodig? Dat zorgt voor meer rust, respect en verbinding in de klas. Met herkenbare voorbeelden laat Esther zien hoe je als docent de rol van aanvoerder pakt, terwijl je leerlingen stap voor stap uitnodigt om zelf verantwoordelijkheid te nemen. Deze week is Nawfal al Jeburi één van onze impactmakers. In deze aflevering van Happy Times Radio heeft hij het met Maartje Bregman over zijn reis naar impact maken, die niet verliep zoals je zou denken.Hij ging op zoek naar geluk in de materiële welvaart, het grote geld. Met een penthouse en een dikke auto voor de deur, bleek het nooit genoeg te zijn. Zijn leven veranderde radicaal en nu staat hij voor de klas, waar hij met kinderen in gesprek gaat over de duistere kant van de kledingindustrie. Maar hij laat bovenal zien hoe het wél op een eerlijke manier kan. Als docent op een middelbare school heeft hij een duidelijke missie: zijn leerlingen bewustmaken van de extreme gevolgen van de mode- en kledingindustrie. He has been producing for ten years and I have been a fan since 2022's "Kingdom of the Deep." Roosje Klap is ontwerper, graficus, onderzoeker en docent. Ze studeerde aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en runt sindsdien haar eigen interdisciplinaire ontwerppraktijk onder de naam ARK (Atelier Roosje Klap). Met ARK werkt ze op het snijvlak van kunst, design en technologie, vaak in de culturele sector. Haar collectief realiseerde projecten voor o.a. MU Hybrid Art House Eindhoven, het Digital Art Museum Taipei en het Nederlands Paviljoen op de Architectuurbiënnale Venetië 2023. In 2022 won ARK het Gouden Kalf voor Beste Digitale Cultuurproductie. Sinds mei 2024 is Klap algemeen directeur van Noorderlicht, een internationaal platform voor fotografie en beeldcultuur in Groningen. Als directeur en co-curator leidt Klap ook de Noorderlicht Biënnale. Deze editie, getiteld ‘Machine Entanglements' is te zien van 12 juli t/m 7 september op zes locaties in Noord‑Nederland.
