In this episode, we first talk about the history of European political thought, how old it is, and how it changed with the advent of modernism. We discuss the origins of “left-wing” and “right-wing”, and why these terms are problematic. We talk about the main tenets of anarchism as a political ideology, and focus on the topics of liberty and whether society needs hierarchy. We discuss the relationship between history and politics. Finally, we discuss some of the issues with Steven Pinker's take on the Enlightenment and progressivism. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. In the summer of 1959, Nixon and Khrushchev argued over a washing machine in a backstage kitchen in Moscow, while American Cold War intellectuals gathered in the Poconos to defend Kitsch. Dwight Macdonald, whose theory of mass culture translated too easily into Anti-Americanism, was barred from participating because this was no ordinary mass culture conference; it was an Anti Anti-Americanism operation. Meanwhile, in London, Dwight Macdonald delivered a mass culture lecture of his own called "America, America,” based on the most famous article Encounter magazine never published. For the last podcast of the year, we figured what better way to end 2023 than to close it out with a podcast reflecting on the miraculous incarnation of Christ! While Christmas may be over, the significance is still worth the conversation and undoubtedly more. Troy and Steve continued their conversation with our friend, Dr. Raphael Samuel, to delve into Part Two of the year-end podcast, "The Miracle of Christ."
Christmas is just around the corner. 'Tis the time of the year when we take the time to reflect on God coming in the flesh. Our thinking often starts with the typical nativity scene, with Baby Jesus already lying in the manger in swaddling clothes. We rarely think about the pregnancy and the actual birthing process. Since we believe that Jesus is truly human as well as truly God, reflecting on the miracle of the human birth will help us appreciate the miracle of the divine birth. Troy and Steve sat down with our friend, Dr. Raphael Samuel, to delve into Part One of a two-part series titled "The Miracle of Birth.

Most, if not all, deliberate human activity gets filtered through the lens of some worldview. What has metaphysics got to do with medicine? As it turns out, quite a lot. Questions of medical ethics touch on what it means to be human, what the value of human life is, and a host of other issues of deepest significance. Today, Andy sat down with Raphael Samuel, an anesthesiologist and a Christian apologist, who is also one of Apologetics Canada's adjunct speakers, to discuss the beauty and the brokenness of the human body.
Dr. Raphael Samuel's story begins with his upbringing during Apartheid in South Africa. For his day job he works as an anesthesiologist but he's also passionate about explaining the coherence of the Christian faith and does itinerant work as an Apologetics Canada speaker. In this episode Matt and Raphael get into Christianity's scientific, moral, logical, and historical coherence. ABOUT Raphael Samuel is a Christian speaker, apologist and anesthesiologist. Born in Durban, South Africa, he obtained his medical degree and a Master's degree in Medicine there. He further obtained Fellowships in Anesthesiology from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is currently completing his Master's degree in Christian Apologetics at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, Southern California. Having lived, worked and ministered in three different countries on three respective continents, he testifies to the transformative power of, and universal need for the Gospel of Jesus. By presenting evidence for the moral, logical, historical, and scientific coherence of the Christian worldview, he aims to help the fellow believer to love the Lord God with all his mind (Mk 12:30), as well as address barriers to belief faced by the skeptic.

We speak to those who argue parents should give their children money long into adulthood - and others who say the whole of society should be responsible, not just parents. Raphael Samuel is a 28 year old businessman in India who tried to sue his parents for giving birth to him - without his consent. An Indian court threw out the case on grounds of absurdity, but Raphael isn’t giving up. He’s now filed a case demanding that all parents prove - before they give birth - that they have the ability to give their child the ‘right to life’ - something he thinks should include being able to provide an education, proper food, and healthcare. He believes parents’ financial responsibility for their children doesn’t end when the child hits 18 years of age. In Italy, where almost two thirds of 18-34 year olds live at home, we hear from Tobia della Puppa, who explains why it can be hard to explain to the older generation why this is the case. We also get the perspective of Nina Bandel, a sociology professor at the University of California Irvine, who tells us how children went from being economically useful, to “priceless”. It’s not our view that needs changing, it’s nihilist Raphael Samuel’s. Join Liz, Josh, and returning guest Maria to determine if this fool’s argument holds any water or if it’s a whole lot of privileged BS. This one gets a bit gritty as the trio get in the weeds about religion, gender inequality, classism, and more. But for those who enjoy listening to the lighter, more degenerate conversations, don’t worry! We gotchu, fam. The idiotic topics touched on this week include NOW 69 (perverts), The Alan, and Ted Kaczynski as the OG hipster. But seriously, change our view on that last one.

Summary Have you heard about the man from India who plans to sue his parents for being born without his permission? The remedy he seeks is lifetime financial support. Everyone sees this man, Raphael Samuel, as somewhere between being the most entitled person on earth, or simply a lunatic. Perhaps both. We’ll look at Mr. Samuels’ demands of his parents, and compare them with the Green New Deal’s demands of American taxpayers. The Green New Deal, among other things, requires: “4.15 providing all of the people of the United States with-- (i) high-quality health care; (ii) affordable, safe and adequate housing; (iii) economic security; and (iv) access to clear water, clean air, healthy and affordable food, and nature.” Pause for clarification: Robert Hockett, Cornell law professor and adviser to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, has admitted, after several previous denials, that an official "Green New Deal" document posted by Ocasio-Cortez's office contained a guarantee of economic security even for those "unwilling to work" Turns out that Mr. Samuels is too modest in his demands of his parents. Perhaps he should amend his parental lawsuit, substituting the Green New Deal language. It would get even better for Mr. Samuels when you look at the dozens of other requirements in the Resolution--as we will in this podcast. This Resolution, a “10-year national mobilization” is backed by many leading names in the Democratic party, including currently leading candidates for the Democratic nomination, with Rep Ocasio-Cortez, D-NYC, Sen Ed. Markey, D-NY, Sen Elizabeth Warren, D-NY, Sen Kamala Harris, D-CA, Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY and Sen Cory Booker, D-NJ. For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack what this kind of thinking, this type of plan for our nation, would mean to us, our communities and America. Episode 19 of the Podcast went a little topical. I found a news piece so interesting that I couldn't help but move the episode I was working on forward and make an episode on the said story. Raphael Samuel gained a lot of attention and raised a lot of eyebrows when he announced that he is going to sue his parents for giving him birth without his consent. This leads to a conversation about Anti-natalism and Parenthood, and I wanted to cover the historical ground of the philosophical concept and give my opinion on the issue.
Raphael Samuel is suing his parents because they never got his consent for him to be born. He thinks that brining a child into this world is immoral and selfish and is taking his parents to court in India. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Six months ago, Raphael Samuel informed his mother over breakfast that he planned to sue his parents for bringing him into existence without his consent. His story should be a movie, obviously. Every week on "Shoot This Now," we talk about stories that should be made into TV shows or movies. This week, Trey Williams joins us to talk about the strange case of Raphael Samuel, whose story -- including the breakfast conversation -- is told in this BBC account. This episode includes a brief discussion of suicide. If you've given it any serious thought -- please don't do it. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. In this episode of the History Workshop Podcast, a unique perspective on the memoir and biography, and the art of writing about lived experiences. Alison Light tells a very personal story about her ongoing efforts to write a memoir about her relationship with Raphael Samuel, who passed away in 1996. She uses their marriage as a kind of a lens through which to see both their shared past and her future. She also reflects on our ideas of ‘personal life’ – suggesting instead that the public sphere cannot be separated from private experience, especially in the process of writing a memoir. As we share more and more of our lives online, this is something we are all increasingly familiar with.
