Crime Capsule is happy to introduce you to a new Evergreen Podcasts show, Something About the Beatles, from David Whelan. He was a successful documentary writer and producer in the UK when, as COVID hit, he began looking into the murder of John Lennon, prompted by a podcast interview he heard. What he discovered quickly led him into a four-year investigation, as he talked with witnesses who had never before spoken publicly.  About Something About The Beatles All episodes of SATB feature conversations. Sometimes they are with Beatles authorities: writers or academics who've done the research and come up with a thesis. Others are with folks in the business: musicians who were inspired by The Beatles and who've walked the walk – written songs, recorded records, gone on tour. They know the ins and outs of Beatles music. Then there are the Beatle witnesses: folks who knew the individual Beatles well, either by direct family relations (Mike McCartney, Jenny Boyd), working directly for The Beatles (Kevin Harrington, Chris O'Dell, Ken Mansfield, Chris Thomas, Alan Parsons, John Leckie, Tony King, and so forth) or else spending considerable time in their world (journalist Ray Connolly, photographer Ethan Russell, journalist Ivor Davis, photographer Tom Murray, filmmaker Paul Saltzman, Nancy Lee Andrews, May Pang, and so forth). These people come to SATB to share their insights and observations, bringing us that much closer to the world The Beatles created. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For this episode we're joined by the admirable Simon Raymonde, sometime Cocteau Twin, head honcho at Bella Union Records and author of the autobiographical In One Ear. We commence by asking our guest about growing up as the son of the legendary Ivor Raymonde, string arranger on umpteen hits by pop idols from Billy Fury to the Walker Brothers. We hear clips from Ira Robbins' 1989 audio interview with Raymonde Sr.'s most famous client Dusty Springfield — and discuss a Ray Connolly piece from 1970 in which she more or less outs herself as gay. Simon then talks about his days behind the counter at Beggars Banquet Records and how they led to his joining the Cocteaus in 1984. Clips from a 1996 audio interview with the trio prompt his reflections on writing and performing with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser — and how their extraordinary music won the admiration of everyone from Prince to Jeff Buckley. Simon also recalls the fallout from leaving indie sanctuary 4AD for major-label Fontana. We conclude by asking our guest about the 27-year-old Bella Union label, home to Midlake, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, John Grant, Flaming Lips and Father John Misty… and to 17-year-old Nell Smith, who tragically died in a car accident three days before we recorded this episode. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces — Val Wilmer's 1966 interview with Sun Ra; Lester Bangs' rave review of the Temptations' Sky's the Limit — Jasper brings the episode to a close with his thoughts on early interviews with Alicia Keys (2001) and Amy Winehouse (2004). Many thanks to special guest Simon Raymonde. In One Ear: Cocteau Twins, Ivor and Me is published by Nine Eight Books and available now from all good bookshops. In Episode 12 of Looking Outside we explore the influence of music with music lover and the ever-insightful, Adam Conley, Director of Insights for North America at Mars Wrigley. While music plays subtly in the background of our lives, it defines our cultures, shapes our psychology, and even influences our physiology. Adam helps us examine music's impact over time, at a universal human level and a personal one. Adam and Jo discuss how music shapes us, and how - as insights and marketing professionals - we can use this to design things that better serve what people are looking for in their lives. Adam also expresses how music can help you look outside what's comfortable and familiar, to learn new ways of thinking, feeling and understanding.  -- To look beyond the familiar, Adam is a proponent of constant learning. He continually listens to new genres, artists and songs outside his regular collection. He believes this kind of learning means continual newness in what you're exposed to, from a variety of places that are less familiar to you. Adam recommends you explore music further by checking out these music biographies: https://www.amazon.com/Beastie-Boys-Book-Michael-Diamond/dp/0812995546/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1653238628&sr=8-2 (Beastie Boys Book by Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.) https://www.amazon.com/Decoded-Jay-Z/dp/1400068924/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1HSALAJK2DE4Z&keywords=Decoded+by+Jay-Z+book&qid=1653238673&sprefix=decoded+by+jay-z+book%2Caps%2C67&sr=8-1 (Decoded by Jay-Z). https://www.amazon.com/Go-Ahead-Rain-Called-American/dp/1477316485/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IHJZBDFUTP88&keywords=Go+Ahead+In+The+Rain%3A+Notes+to+A+Tribe+Called+Quest+by+Hanif+Abdurraqib&qid=1653238699&sprefix=go+ahead+in+the+rain+notes+to+a+tribe+called+quest+by+hanif+abdurraqib%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-1 (Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib). https://www.amazon.com/Catch-Fire-Timothy-White-audiobook/dp/B00C78VNHC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1LZ90J4OB9BTI&keywords=Catch+A+Fire%3A+The+Life+Of+Bob+Marley+by+Timothy+White&qid=1653238722&sprefix=catch+a+fire+the+life+of+bob+marley+by+timothy+white+%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-1 (Catch A Fire: The Life Of Bob Marley by Timothy White). https://www.amazon.com/Acid-for-Children-Flea-audiobook/dp/B07H7TJCK9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32VXI868HN8GC&keywords=Acid+For+the+Children+by+Flea&qid=1653238746&s=audible&sprefix=acid+for+the+children+by+flea%2Caudible%2C84&sr=1-1 (Acid For the Children by Flea). https://www.amazon.com/Its-So-Easy-Duff-McKagan-audiobook/dp/B01KKOG7ES/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2IS4CCHATEQW5&keywords=It%E2%80%99s+So+Easy+And+Other+Lies+by+Duff+McKagan&qid=1653238775&s=audible&sprefix=it+s+so+easy+and+other+lies+by+duff+mckagan%2Caudible%2C53&sr=1-1 (It's So Easy And Other Lies by Duff McKagan). https://www.amazon.com/Being-John-Lennon-Ray-Connolly-audiobook/dp/B07YLBW9JB/ref=sr_1_1?crid=114HL4EUKUMCA&keywords=Being+John+Lennon%3A+A+Restless+Life+by+Ray+Connolly&qid=1653238795&s=audible&sprefix=being+john+lennon+a+restless+life+by+ray+connolly%2Caudible%2C58&sr=1-1 (Being John Lennon: A Restless Life by Ray Connolly). https://www.amazon.com/Passion-Fashion-Real-Story-Clash/dp/030681434X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=36QLTZDHUP0PF&keywords=Passion+Is+a+Fashion%3A+The+Real+Story+Of+The+Clash+by+Pat+Gilbert&qid=1653238815&s=audible&sprefix=passion+is+a+fashion+the+real+story+of+the+clash+by+pat+gilbert%2Caudible%2C78&sr=1-1 (Passion Is a Fashion: The Real Story Of The Clash by Pat Gilbert)....

‘Pizza and Fairytales' is John Lennon's phrase— a brilliant one—and he conjured it to describe one man: Paul McCartney.  John in the 70s is fairly well documented. But what about the less communicative, less examined half of Lennon/McCartney? In this episode, Phoebe and Daphne give McCartney two things he doesn't often get: detailed lyrical analysis and recognition of his atypical self-expression. Extending this basic respect serves to shine a brighter, warmer light on the Lennon/McCartney relationship—not just in the 70s but up to present day and beyond.  Lennon and McCartney will be joined forever; they deserve to have their true story told. We discuss his early life in Tupelo and Memphis, how blues and gospel influenced his musical career — and the calculated transformation of a poor country boy into a pop culture icon. Katie discusses what Elvis means to her and how he's been there her whole life. Anybody hear anything about a newly-revealed taped Apple meeting from September 1969 that's been public knowledge since the 1970s? You will now, with the return of journalist/writer Ray Connolly. Ray was tight in The Beatles' orbit during their final years; with John and Paul especially. He was the only one outside their inner circle to learn that John had "quit" the group - his bio of John, Being John Lennon: A Restless Life, is now out in paperback, as is his indispensable collection, The Ray Connolly Beatles Archive. Last: his novella, 'Sorry, Boys, You Failed The Audition' is newly-published. It's a work of "alternative history" and has been presented as a BBC radio play.  Ray and I discuss the end of The Beatles and their relationships going forward, as well as his 'Sorry Boys' project.

Few professional scribes received access to The Beatles like Ray Connolly. As a journalist with the Evening Standard, he found himself in the right place at the right time to cover the group during their final years. (It was to him that John confided that he'd quit the group; it was to Ray that Paul divulged: "I didn't leave the Beatles - The Beatles left the Beatles.") He later scripted the films That'll Be The Day and Stardust; he also wrote radio plays and biographies.  In 2018, he published Being John Lennon: A Restless Life. One of the better episodes of this show, mainly because there were some honest talks. Ray Connolly is an advertising freelancer who clearly isn't satisfied with his current work and wants to do music. Interestingly David also plays music which is good to know. I came to know that David does standup comedy too. What I found interesting was their talk about therapists. Ray was either high or depressed (or both. But not saying it in negative way.) Not many callers today. David revealed he was 32, but to be frank he doesn't sound 30+. He appears like someone in early or middle twenties, at least from voice. In this episode it felt like David was restraining himself, which is a change because he generally otherwise goes haywire with the flow. Sandeep from India rates this episode 3 stars, which is surprising for me too because I should've given higher. I guess I missed David's original style, even though it is full of profanities and vulgar talks. He has spoiled me.

The show about nothing does a 69! - Now that's something! Fellow comic Ray Connolly is back in the guest seat for the third time (really!?, maybe it's the coffee!). The two dive in talking about Ray's family situation and his staycation pursuits. Apparently the first time Ray came on the show was Episode 2, which sounds like a real pickle from the way David keeps talking about it. David runs Ray through the show's how-we-got-here story and the two go on to share some field notes from the comic circuit. And suddenly things light up(or not) - we have James Bond working the transatlantic lines again - giving English lessons and spilling his expertize on things Russian. Ray tries to hold it together, but you could tell that he wasn't too impressed with Bond. Our fact checker for the day (Miranda) calls in with, well - some facts. Hmm has the 'Womanizer' run out of batteries?! David tries his uncomfy-questions-list on Ray again, but he doesn't bite. The son of Cony has a show coming up next week and to the question whether he'll ever be back at the Ritual on a Thursday night - time will tell! . That's me, Sam from an Airbnb place in the Far East rating this episode with 2 stars - that could've been much worse, I think.

More On The Film & Alan G Parker  From the Emmy nominated director of Monty Python: Almost The Truth , Alan G. Parker (Rebel Truce: The Story of The Clash, Hello Quo, Never Mind the Sex Pistols, Who Killed Nancy) and produced by Reynold D'Silva and Alexa Morris , the film features incredible rare archival footage unseen since the 1960s. The film also features rare interviews with The Beatles' original drummer Pete Best , John Lennon's sister Julia Baird , Beatles' manager Brian Epstein's secretary Barbara O'Donnell, Steve Diggle of the Buzzcocks, Beatles associate Tony Bramwell, Pattie Boyd's sister Jenny Boyd , Hunter Davies, Simon Napier-Bell, Ray Connolly, Bill Harry, Philip Norman, Steve Turner, Andy Peebles, Freda Kelly and The Merseybeats . IT WAS FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY! THE BEATLES: SGT. PEPPER & BEYOND examines the year 1967, the year that would arguably be the most crucial in the band's career, a year in which they stopped being the world's number one touring band and instead became the world's most innovative recording artists, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved in the studio. Unable to hear themselves perform and mired by controversy, the band decided to stop touring in August 1966. What followed was a period of extreme creativity and rebirth during which they embraced Swinging London, the ‘avant-garde', LSD and the advent of the Summer Of Love. The result was the creation of their new alter ego, Sgt. Pepper, with the desire to create a pop music first, the concept album. A devoted fan since the age of nine, the film's director Alan G. Parker has set out to explore this period by filming interviews with former employees, fellow musicians, family member and journalists, all of whom were there at the time. These stories are in turn supported by a vast array of impressive archival footage, much of it not seen since first transmission. The result is a detailed examination of why the band stopped touring, how the album was conceived and its recording at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, its lyrics, the creation of its sleeve and finally its release. All this is set against a background of the band's changing relationship with their manager, Brian Epstein and the tragedy of his death, the creation of Apple and the powerful influence of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. There is a lot of discussion about birthday celebrations giving cash instead of gifts. Overall lot of laughter and fun. later Vick calls in and talk about Marielle who is a musician. Personally found it very wierd not really used my time well. That did not go well, i think. Conversations get boring and off topic comes in between. It merely seems to be more of a funny . conversation not with much learning or knowing. Well I think its highly simple . There are many funny jokes which don't make me laugh. Myself Insiya from India will give this podcast a rating of 2 stars. Great day guys.keep watching [Editor's note: it's not a podcast, it's a radio show.]

He starts off classy but gets in some digs. Celeste however, remained a class act. A quote from previous guest Ray Connolly comes up: "It's not a podcast, it's live radio archived as a waste of time." That went well, I think.
