In the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast, Steve Diggle of Vulpes Investment Management discusses his return to the volatility trading space after a 14-year hiatus. Steve cites several key factors that have led him to believe the risk-reward dynamic for downside hedging is now more favorable, including elevated market valuations, reduced central bank intervention capabilities, and the unpredictability of the Trump administration. Steve also provides an update on the biotech industry, which has faced significant challenges in the post-COVID environment. He sees an unprecedented opportunity to invest in promising biotech companies whose valuations have collapsed, though caveat emptor, as the level of complexity and risk involved is significant. If Steve is right, markets are facing heightened uncertainty that could lead to significantly increased volatility-a situation which makes the timing perfect for his ‘particular set of skills' as downside protection strategies become first more attractive, and then imperative. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION – BUZZCOCKS with special guest, Paul Hanley. Buzzcocks' 1979 album, 'A Different Kind of Tension' may have been released the same year as ‘Singles Going Steady,' but it is a different shape of beast to ‘Singles.' For a start it was recorded intentionally as an album rather than cobbled together by a naive U.S. label in search of punk dollar. Track three is “You Say You Don't Love Me” which automatically rates the album a straight 10, but there are other objects d'interest up in this sweet, sweet bastard of a record. By this point, on their third studio album proper, Pete Shelley was firmly entrenched as the band's driving creative force—yet songs by Steve Diggle like “Sitting Round at Home” and “You Know You Can't Help It” are rough-hewn gems in the catalogue worth seeking out. For the most part, as for majority of their output, the songs are short, sharp, punk-pop shocks that electrify and energize—and while their formula may have been perceived by some as tired by this point, the band would continue on in various incarnations right up until the present day. Even now, with Shelley gone, Diggle has chosen to keep pushing Buzzcocks into the future. The eternal teenagers somehow continue their path, unswerving, and it's a beautiful thing to both reflect on and behold. With special guest PAUL HANLEY Man of letters and former Fall drummer, Paul Hanley has written a book on Buzzcocks called ‘Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (And Me),' to give it its full title. The book mixes together biography, interview, critique and social history to create a full picture of the legendary Manchester group, equally beloved of fans of punk, post punk and indie. Route Publishing – who have also published Hanley's ‘Leave The Capital: A History Of Manchester Music In 13 Recordings' and the masterful ‘Have A Bleedin Guess: The Story Of Hex Enduction Hour' – have the following to say: "Paul Hanley's obsession with Buzzcocks peaked between the ages of 14 and 16, exactly the age when ‘favourite band' actually means something important. An essential part of the charm of Buzzcocks to him were their proximity and approachability." Paul Hanley is also one half of the drumming duo who power recent Q Album Of The Year, House Of All, and co-host of the Oh! Brother podcast with kin Steve Hanley, JASON BARNARD of Strange Brew podcasts was in the interviewer's chair. This podcast in association with Strange Brew podcasts. The AncientBiotics Consortium is a group of experts from the sciences, arts and humanities, who are digging through medieval medical books in hopes of finding ancient solutions to today's growing threat of antibiotic resistance. The group's first undertaking was recreation and investigation of the antimicrobial properties of an ancient eyesalve described in Bald's Leechbook, one of the earliest known medical textbooks, which contains recipes for medications, salves and treatments. The consortium found that the eyesalve was capable of killing MRSA, a discovery that generated a lot of media attention and sparked expanded research efforts. The group brought data scientists and mathematicians into the consortium (work driven by Dr. Erin Connelly from the University of Warwick). Together, the researchers began scouring early modern and medieval texts and turning them into databases. The goal? To mathematically data mine these recipes see which ingredients were very often or non-randomly combined in ancient medical remedies. One wouldn't blame Steve Diggle if he decided to pack up The Buzzcocks name after the death of vocalist Pete Shelley back in 2018. But Steve is carrying on, with the same fervored passion that powered the band back in Manchester, England in 1978. The new album, entitled Sonics In The Soul, further cements the bands legacy as innovators in Punk. Steve talks all about the band, the loss of Pete, and the new album on this episode of the What Difference Does It Make podcast. We are a proud member of Pantheon Podcasts

Back in '77, one thing UK punk bands didn't have much use for was love songs. But Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks wrote what could be called "modern love songs"; honest songs about longing, romance, loneliness, and yes, love -- all laced with self-deprecating humor. But their music was aggressive, all raging guitars, pounding drums & pummeling bass. With those thoughtful (dare I say, sensitive) lyrics on top, it was the best of both worlds. PEPPER & BEYOND examines the year 1967, the year that would arguably be the most crucial in the band's career, a year in which they stopped being the world's number one touring band and instead became the world's most innovative recording artists, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved in the studio. Unable to hear themselves perform and mired by controversy, the band decided to stop touring in August 1966. What followed was a period of extreme creativity and rebirth during which they embraced Swinging London, the ‘avant-garde', LSD and the advent of the Summer Of Love. The result was the creation of their new alter ego, Sgt. Pepper, with the desire to create a pop music first, the concept album. A devoted fan since the age of nine, the film's director Alan G. Parker has set out to explore this period by filming interviews with former employees, fellow musicians, family member and journalists, all of whom were there at the time. These stories are in turn supported by a vast array of impressive archival footage, much of it not seen since first transmission. The result is a detailed examination of why the band stopped touring, how the album was conceived and its recording at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, its lyrics, the creation of its sleeve and finally its release. All this is set against a background of the band's changing relationship with their manager, Brian Epstein and the tragedy of his death, the creation of Apple and the powerful influence of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Steve Diggle plays guitar, writes songs and occasionally sings in legendary Manchester punk band the Buzzcocks. He's the yin to frontman Pete Shelley's yang, and during his 62 years on the planet he's seen and done an awful lot - and he's still got the attitude and stamina of a man half his age. He's also collected a fair few stories along the way, from touring with The Clash on the White Riot Tour to playing shows with Nirvana just days before Kurt Cobain's death. Mancunian Steve Diggle is the guitarist and singer songwriter with the Buzzcocks… the seminal punk band who infiltrated the charts with brilliant, infectious songs such as ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t)’, ‘Promises’ and ‘Harmony In My Head’ – back at a time when punk really did want to subvert mainstream music. Tonight’s show is a tour-de-force of punks on tour. The Buzzcocks opened for the Sex Pistols at Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall, performed at the 100 Club punk festival in 1976 and toured with more recent household names Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Now clean, former Mod Steve speaks with devastating honesty about his experiences with hard drugs. As the Buzzcocks approach their 40th year, this complex and creative musician continues to perform both with them and as a solo artist. Why? It’s still a buzz, cock.
