JOHN LINCOLN (WILLIAMS) chats to Paul Burke about his new novel GREY IN THE DARK, a journey in American crime fiction, CLR James and South Wales. GREY IN THE DARK: Too many people loved Kelly Rowland. One of them killed her, but was it the man in prison for her murder? Gethin Grey and the Last Resort Legals team investigate another miscarriage of justice, taking them from post-industrial dereliction of the South Wales Valleys to the gated communities of the Cardiff docklands.Gethin Grey is back in the game. His wife may have left him and he's struggling with life as a single father, but now he's got his biggest case in years. The brutal murder of a young woman called Kelly Rowland has been the talk of the South Wales valleys. Even the conviction of a neighbour, a builder called Morgan Hopkins, failed to stop the gossip. There were too many other suspects still around, among them a pair of coppers: brother and sister. So Gethin was delighted when Morgan's family stumped up the money to pay him and his Last Resort Legals team to reinvestigate the case. But when a new lead takes him undercover into a support group for recovering addicts, Gethin has to confront his own demons.Moving from the former mining towns of the valleys to the shiny new waterfront developments of Cardiff, taking in adult puppet shows and piercing parlors, derelict mines and country clubs, Grey In The Dark lays bare a world in which sex and money collide and everyone has their secrets.John Lincoln is the transparent pseudonym of John Williams, the novelist, biographer and crime fiction reviewer for the Mail on Sunday. His first book Into The Badlands explores 'a vital mix of literary criticism, personality profile, and imaginary geography' (New Statesman and Society) and has become a crime fiction classic. His true crime account of a notorious miscarriage of justice, Bloody Valentine, is a cult classic, described by Benjamin Zephaniah as his favourite book. Since then he's written eight more books including the Cardiff Trilogy of novels and biographies of Michael X, Shirley Bassey, Eartha Kitt & CLR James. His latest novel Grey in the Dark is the second Gethin Grey mystery.Laugharne Weekend 24-26th March. In 1934, tens of thousands of Communist guerillas fled Jiangxi, in an extended retreat through hazardous terrain to Shaanxi in the north, while under fire from their Nationalist enemies. The Long March, as it became to be known, helped build the legend of the Chinese Communist Party, and of its leader Mao. While on the Long March, Mao had a daughter, who was left behind to live with a local family due to the trek's dangers That event inspired Michael X. Wang's debut novel Lost in the Long March (Overlook Press, 2022), about one couple who faced a similar decision–whether to leave their child behind–and that decision's repercussions decades later. In this interview, Michael and I talk about the Long March, what makes it a great setting for a novel, and how its story aligns with many other family stories from modern China. Michael X. Wang was born in Fenyang, a small coal-mining city in China's mountainous Shanxi province. His short story collection, Further News of Defeat (Autumn House Press: 2020), won the 2021 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection and was a finalist for the 2021 CLMP Firecracker Award for Fiction. Michael's work has appeared in the New England Review, Greensboro Review, Day One, and Juked, among others. Black Power comes to the UK in the form of Stokeley Carmichael. He speaks at the Dialectics of Liberation conference with Michael on stage beside him. In the country only for a short time, as he is swiftly kicked out by the British state, Stokeley still manages to inspire black activists like Michael X to join the Black Power movement. Standing in for Stokeley at a RAAS meeting in Reading, Michael gives a speech that has dire consequences for his own freedom.
It's the swinging sixties and Michael X has risen to national fame as an outspoken and radical black leader. He moves between worlds as a hustler, activist and beatnik. As he becomes part of the underground counter culture movement, drugs and poetry flow along with fantasies of creating a better world. Michael becomes a part of the London Free School, helping to educate local people and through this organisation the legendary Notting Hill Carnival is born.
It's 1965 and Michael is searching for a higher meaning to life. In London he meets the man who will change his life forever, Malcolm X. They travel together to Smethwick on the outskirts of Birmingham to protest the racial actions of the local Conservative council. Just 11 days later Malcolm is assassinated in Harlem, New York. Inspired by Malcolm's example, Michael reinvents himself from the opportunist hustler into a black activist leader for Britain. Founding RAAS (the Racial Adjustment Action Society), he becomes Michael X.

Please listen to all three episodes for the full experience.

JOHN L WILLIAMS talks to Paul Burke about his account of the Lynette White murder in 1988 and the 'Cardiff Three' miscarriage of justice: BLOODY VALENTINEThe tragic story of Britain's worst miscarriage of justice as seen on TV in the BBC Wales documentary series A Killing in Tiger Bay, in which John took part.Bloody Valentine is the story of the murder of a young woman called Lynette White in the Cardiff docklands (aka Tiger Bay) on Valentine's Day 1988. It's also the story of the miscarriage of justice that came after, when three black men, 'the Cardiff Three', were wrongly convicted of her murder. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. It's a book that got so close to the bone that the author was sued for libel by the police and received death threats from a variety of minor characters. It's an indelible portrait of life in the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. This new edition includes an introduction and afterword bringing the extraordinary, unhappy saga up to date.'Bloody Valentine is a bloody good book' - Benjamin Zephaniah'Complex, emotional and moving.
