If you are not familiar with The Nails don't feel bad.  They were not a hit on commercial radio, but this punk rock/new wave outfit from Boulder Colorado was much better known on college radio in the mid to late 80's.  Although Mood Swing is their debut album from 1984, the band originally formed in 1976 as a five-piece band.  They moved to New York and built both their musical chops and their following on the club circuit before their major label debut. At the time that Mood Swing was released the band consisted of Marc Campbell on vocals, Steve O'Rourke on guitar, George Kaufman on bass, Douglas Guthrie on saxophone, and David Kaufman on keyboards.  Drummer Tommy Cotogna had left the band prior to recording the album, and Dennis McDermott provided the drum work for the album sessions. The band produced a sound that included strong musicianship, dark and often deliberately shocking lyrics, but laced with a sense of humor.  Campbell claimed that their music came from “a mystical and sexual area.  I write in a cinematic way, trying to create through language and sound, texture and atmosphere, a specific mood.”  The songs on the album do indeed represent a diversity of mood.Wayne relives his days as a college radio DJ as he brings us this new wave group for the podcast, and we are joined by friend of the show Heather Lynch, sitting in for Bruce (and keeping Lynch in line). Every Time I Touch YouThe distinctive bass line followed by the screaming guitar leads into this song about being lost in a mix of love and lust, though we're not certain that this is a match made in heaven.  Love is a fire which can be explosive and tear the lovers apart.   And you never can go wrong with a sax!Let It All Hang OutThis is a cover from a 1967 song by the Hombres, and a “southern-fried parody” of Bob Dylan's “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” A number of other artists also covered this song, including Cream, John Cougar Mellencamp, and Wheezer.  It's a fun song.88 Lines About 44 Women If the Nail had a “hit” this was it.  This single peaked at number 46 on the US dance chart, and was laid out on a new Casio keyboard.  The Nails had released several versions of this song previously on independent labels.  Lead singer Campbell says that the song pays tribute to the power and glory of sex, drugs, rock and roll...and love.  It is dedicated to the women in my life to did their best to keep me human."Home of the BraveThis song has a Warhol-esque feel to it.  “Hectic madness of city living where the whores are dancing on the table tops and the juke box plays Apocalyptic bebop.”  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Night Court”We were introduced to Judge Harry T. Stone and the eclectic characters that pass through his courtroom on this sitcom that premiered in January 1984. STAFF PICKS:Say it Isn't So by Hall & OatesLynch starts of the staff picks with one of two new singles released on Hall & Oates compilation album "Rock 'n Soul Part 1."  It was stuck at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's "Say Say Say" for several weeks before finally taking the number 1 slot.  It is about the downside of fame, and the oddness of everyone seeming to know them. The Politics of Dancing by The Re-FlexRob's staff pick hits all the hallmarks of mid-80's music, including the keyboards, drum machine, spoken lyrics, and low tones.  This song went to number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This is the title song from the debut album by The Re-Flex.  The band stopped working together by 1985, but members often collaborated on each other's solo projects.Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder Heather Lynch brings us a reggae-infused tune that hit number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song lyrics reflect a man smitten by a woman from whom he must move on, but it also reflects Wilder's struggles with delivering a hit that the record label would take.Holy Diver by DioWayne features heavy metal virtuoso Ronnie James Dio in a solo outing.  It was from his debut solo album of the same name.  The lyrics are about a Christ-figure on another planet who sacrifices himself for his people.  This song was one on Clear Channel's “inappropriate to play” songs after the attacks on 9/11. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:1984 by Van HalenThis short instrumental leads off Van Halen's album of the same name.

With Paul McCartney's latest solo effort Pipes of Peace, Macca remained on track to continue his hit-making streak through to the end of 1983. Promotion for this new LP - which featured the smash-hit single Say Say Say as its lead-off track - was brisk, and while reviews weren't as kind as they had been to its predecessor Tug of War, Pipes of Peace proved to be the kind of commercial seller that was handy to have leading into the release year of Paul's solo feature film debut, Give my Regards to Broadstreet. Also before year's end was an early clue to the new direction for Ringo. While Starr's record sales continued to falter, his film and television roles seemed as robust as ever - landing the part of a gay fashion designer opposite his wife Barbara Bach in the feature Princess Daisy. But it would be a run-in with a certain blue cartoon train that would signal a new smash-hit on the horizon for Ringo heading into 1984 and beyond... Hosted on Acast. A new solo album is on the way from Paul McCartney in the fall of 1983 - and all eyes were on the follow-up effort to his smash hit LP Tug of War the year prior. Pipes of Peace, however, was a markedly different record from it predecessor - acting in some ways as a peaceful, chipper answer to the heavy, dramatic leanings of much of the previous LP. Uncharacteristic introspection was still on the menu for Macca, with tracks like The Other Me highlighting McCartney's doubts - the kind of self-examination which had been a rarity in the former Beatle's solo catalog up to this point. Also of note the single Say Say Say alongside the enormously successful Michael Jackson - which helped bring Paul back to the top of the charts and keep his 1980s hit streak alive... Hosted on Acast.

Under the direction of the American entrepreneur Peter Ueberroth, the 1984 Olympics witnessed the ascension of commercialism as an integral element in the staging of the Games. Corporate sponsors, principally U.S.-based multinationals, could put Olympic symbols on their products, which were then marketed as the “official” such product of the Olympics. A spot on the torch relay team sold for $3,000 per km. The Olympics turned a profit ($225 million) for the first time since 1932. Despite concerns about growing corporate involvement ... the financial success and high worldwide television ratings raised optimism about the Olympic movement for the first time in a generation. American singer, songwriter, actor, and multi-instrumentalist. (@ 26 yrs. old) 91. Famous for his flamboyance, powerful voice, and eclectic behavior, he boasted of a career that spanned four long decades, a rarity in the music world where success is fickle. With worldwide sales of 100 million records, he is counted amongst the best-selling artists of all time. The son of a pianist and a jazz singer, Prince inherited his musical talents from his parents who encouraged him from a young age to pursue music as a career. Under his parents’ guidance he developed a deep love for music and began creating tunes when he was just seven. He also taught himself how to play the piano, guitar and drums. He became a professional singer and performer as a young man and earned much popularity with his eponymous album ‘Prince.’ His highly sexualized lyrics, creative compositions, and incorporation of elements of funk, dance, and rock music made him stand out from others of his generation. He enjoyed a very successful career that was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 57. 92. Childhood & Early Life: 93. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7, 1958 to an African American couple Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson. His father was a pianist and songwriter and his mother was a jazz singer. He suffered from epileptic seizures as a young child. He became interested in music at a young age and was encouraged by his parents. He taught himself how to play the piano, guitar and drums, and wrote his first tune when he was seven. His parents separated when he was ten, and the next few years were spent repeatedly switching homes, sometimes living with his father and sometimes with his other. He formed his first band, Grand Central (later known as Champagne), when he was 14. 94. Career: 95. Debut album ‘For You’, (1978) / ‘Prince’, (1979) - Hit singles ‘Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?’ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’. Went platinum, effectively establishing Prince’s career. / ‘Dirty Mind’ (1980) / ’Controversy’ (1981), and ‘1999’ (1982) 96. 1984, he released ‘Purple Rain’. Sold more than 13 million copies in the US and spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1. The same year he appeared in a rock musical drama film of the same name, making his film debut. The film became a cult classic. 97. Following Albums: ‘Parade’ (1986) / ‘Sign o' the Times’ (1987) / ‘Lovesexy’ (1988) / ‘Batman’ (1989) 98. In the 1990s he started performing with a new backing band, the New Power Generation. 99. In 1993 he changed his stage name to, an unpronounceable symbol which was a combination of the symbols for male (♂) and female (♀). 100. ‘Purple Rain’ is consistently ranked among the best albums in music history and is widely regarded as Prince's magnum opus. It has sold over 22 million copies worldwide, becoming the sixth best-selling soundtrack album of all time. His album ‘Sign o' the Times’, which had elements of funk, soul, psychedelic pop, and rock music, and featured tracks like ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’, ‘Housequake’ and ‘It’ was another one of his mega hits. In 1989, ‘Time Out’ magazine ranked it as the greatest album of all time. 101. In early April 2016 he reported that he was not feeling well and postponed his performances. It was also said that he was being treated for drug overdose. On April 21, 2016, he was found dead in an elevator. He was 57 years old. 102. Open Comments: Do you know what Purple Rain is? 103. Ever wonder why Paul McCartney was sitting with his Ovation Acoustic guitar while the other members of Wings were rocking out on the inner gatefold sleeve of Wings Over America?  Did you ever take close note on why the hands of Michael Jackson seems slightly off on the cover of the SAY SAY SAY 1983 45 single sleeve?  Was that Temporary Secretary 45 single sleeve leading to any curiosity?  Who the hell was Sni Muk Fej on the corner of This One's single sleeve?  Jeff Cummins' (try to spell his name backwards folks) art has created those head scratching questions and the 2Legs team are determined to get to the bottom of this conundrum even if it takes us two plus hours to get them answered.  From an artistic career that has spanned across decades covering (pun intended) the following: Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Ted Nugnet, Alan White, Keith Emerson, Whitesnake, The Moody Blues, Eric Clapton, and Paul McCartney [PLUS MANY MORE] - Jeff's resume of over 45 years is one to be extremely proud of since he has contributed to some of the most iconic album art ever released. Jeff takes Dave and Tom on a journey to tell the stories behind some of these releases.  Revelations have been unearth on the never spoken truth behind the original concept of the 45 sleeve of Ebony and Ivory being eventually re-configured for SAY SAY SAY.  2Legs re-confirms, with the help of Jeff, the rumors of the re-issue of the Wings Over America LP coming later this year. AS AN ADDED BONUS: Jeff was obviously enjoying our company and kept telling some more great stories.  A bonus feature will be available after the main 2 hr segment. Part two of the "When They Was Fab" visit with Dr. Kit O'Toole.     We run through the "Thriller" album, Michael's working relationship with Quincy Jones, George Martin, and of course Paul McCartney.   We consider the three released tracks, the "Say Say Say" video, and some of the photos, video and audio of the duo and ther families socializing.     This naturally leads to a discussion of MJ's purchase of the ATV catalogue, and how it reflects on the two parties.     The show closes with Sean's memories of hanging out with MJ, and the "funhouse mirror" reflection seen and heard in the recent song "Bubbles Burst."

Okay, confession time, we thought we had enough content typed up for a whole episode, but we didn't so if it sounds like we're dragging it out a bit, WE ARE. Mom was sick but still went to work. She was continuing to impress her new bosses but was worried about an upcoming layoff. The boys got to go roller skating for a Halloween party and Mom helped out a lady she knew that needed some groceries and made a point of saying it was important for her to give to others in need when she had a little extra, something the boys have never forgotten. Finally, Mom wrote about a car she was dreaming about.

It's Bonus Song Thursday! And Bill and Brian return to discuss some more about Michael Jackson and his collaborations with Sir Paul McCartney. Released on McCartney's album, the poorly received Pipes of Peace (1983, Parlophone/Columbia). The guys talk about how this is a better song than most give it credit for,  the production on the song and its corresponding album, the picaresque video, and the falling out between the singers over a royalty dispute. Also, we read a listener email, which leads to a discussion about Guided by Voices and how one should attempt delving into their catalog.
