This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare teammates Tyler McBrien and Nastya Lapatina and Lawfare friend Joel Braunold, Managing Director of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, to talk over the week's big national security news stories, including:“Mi Gaza Es Su Gaza.” President Donald Trump shocked the world last week when, in a joint press briefing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he announced plans for the United States to “own” Gaza, take responsibility for reconstructing it, and ultimately renovate it into a “Riviera” on the Eastern Mediterranean—one, he later made clear, that Palestinians would no longer be allowed to live in. What of this plan is serious and what is bluster? And what impact will it have on the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the delicate ceasefire that Trump's emissary worked so hard to secure just weeks ago in Gaza?“Bullets for Bauxite.” President Trump recently reiterated his desire for a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine, a topic on which senior Trump administration and Ukrainian officials will be talking soon. But peace will come at a price—in this case, a deal guaranteeing U.S. access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals, among other concessions. Is Trump's timeline realistic? And how is his administration's “America First” tack likely to impact the trajectory of the conflict?“Quid Pro Whoa.” Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove took the exceptional step this week of directing the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York to dismiss corruption charges—arising from alleged improper contributions and relationships with foreign government officials, including from Turkey—against New York Mayor Eric Adams so that Adams could focus his energy combating high crime and unlawful immigration. What should we make of such a clear quid pro quo? And what might it mean for the Justice Department moving forward? For object lessons, Tyler and Nastya plugged Lawfare's next big long-form audio documentary series, which they co-host and is set to debut later this month: Escalation, a podcast about the war in Ukraine. Scott recommended an incredibly touching piece in the New York Times about faith, parenthood, and reconciling the two, entitled "How My Dad Reconciled His God with His Gay Son," by Timothy White. And in honor of the man's Super Bowl victory, Joel shared one of his favorite quotes from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, which has particular resonance with the peacebuilding community he works in: "I had a purpose before anybody had an opinion."We value your feedback!
Steven Stayner was abducted when he was 7, after facing hell for years his kidnapper wanted to make him an accomplice. Instead, Steven became a hero. He rescued himself and 5-year-old Timothy.
This man's daring rescue was like a Hollywood action movie, only real life — you've gotta hear him tell his story.More: Penn LiveH/T: Penn LiveSupport the show

Join Smilin' Jay McDowell, guitar-player-turned-upright bassist from the small town of West Lafayette, Indiana, as he takes you on his journey from watching and playing in bands in the back room at Lucy's to traveling the world with BR5-49. If you lived in Nashville in the 90s and loved live music you may have known about the punk scene at Lucy's, but you definitely knew about the resurgence of hillbilly and western swing played in the seedy honky tonks on Lower Broad. Jay felt equally at home in both places. Some nights he'd hang out and watch bands at Lucy's or play a gig there with the band Hellbilly. Other nights he'd go downtown to drink cheap beer and watch Greg Garing, Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, or BR5-49 play at Tootsie's or Robert's Western Wear. When he was asked to join BR5-49 he jumped at the chance (it may have been the liquor talking), switching his primary instrument from guitar to stand-up bass and adding some additional style and substance to a band already bursting with it. Jay's tales include his favorite shows at Lucy's, what the scene was like on Lower Broad both pre- and post-BR5-49, chatting with Keith Richards and John Fogerty, touring with Bob Dylan, and what it was like when ALL the record companies came a-callin'. Smilin' Jay McDowell heads the video department at The Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, which opened to bring attention to studio and road musicians who play a vital role in the creation of music but rarely get the attention they deserve. He even has his own well-deserved exhibit in the museum celebrating his work as a session bass player with artists such as Marty Stuart, Dierks Bentley, The Black Crowes, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, The Crickets and BR5-49. Go see it. This episode is dedicated to John Van Etten (1966-1995), Timothy White (1952-2002), and Jim Bessman (1952-2021). In Episode 12 of Looking Outside we explore the influence of music with music lover and the ever-insightful, Adam Conley, Director of Insights for North America at Mars Wrigley. While music plays subtly in the background of our lives, it defines our cultures, shapes our psychology, and even influences our physiology. Adam helps us examine music's impact over time, at a universal human level and a personal one. Adam and Jo discuss how music shapes us, and how - as insights and marketing professionals - we can use this to design things that better serve what people are looking for in their lives. Adam also expresses how music can help you look outside what's comfortable and familiar, to learn new ways of thinking, feeling and understanding. -- To look beyond the familiar, Adam is a proponent of constant learning. He continually listens to new genres, artists and songs outside his regular collection. He believes this kind of learning means continual newness in what you're exposed to, from a variety of places that are less familiar to you. Adam recommends you explore music further by checking out these music biographies: https://www.amazon.com/Beastie-Boys-Book-Michael-Diamond/dp/0812995546/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1653238628&sr=8-2 (Beastie Boys Book by Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.) https://www.amazon.com/Decoded-Jay-Z/dp/1400068924/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1HSALAJK2DE4Z&keywords=Decoded+by+Jay-Z+book&qid=1653238673&sprefix=decoded+by+jay-z+book%2Caps%2C67&sr=8-1 (Decoded by Jay-Z). https://www.amazon.com/Go-Ahead-Rain-Called-American/dp/1477316485/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IHJZBDFUTP88&keywords=Go+Ahead+In+The+Rain%3A+Notes+to+A+Tribe+Called+Quest+by+Hanif+Abdurraqib&qid=1653238699&sprefix=go+ahead+in+the+rain+notes+to+a+tribe+called+quest+by+hanif+abdurraqib%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-1 (Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib). https://www.amazon.com/Catch-Fire-Timothy-White-audiobook/dp/B00C78VNHC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1LZ90J4OB9BTI&keywords=Catch+A+Fire%3A+The+Life+Of+Bob+Marley+by+Timothy+White&qid=1653238722&sprefix=catch+a+fire+the+life+of+bob+marley+by+timothy+white+%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-1 (Catch A Fire: The Life Of Bob Marley by Timothy White). https://www.amazon.com/Acid-for-Children-Flea-audiobook/dp/B07H7TJCK9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32VXI868HN8GC&keywords=Acid+For+the+Children+by+Flea&qid=1653238746&s=audible&sprefix=acid+for+the+children+by+flea%2Caudible%2C84&sr=1-1 (Acid For the Children by Flea). https://www.amazon.com/Its-So-Easy-Duff-McKagan-audiobook/dp/B01KKOG7ES/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2IS4CCHATEQW5&keywords=It%E2%80%99s+So+Easy+And+Other+Lies+by+Duff+McKagan&qid=1653238775&s=audible&sprefix=it+s+so+easy+and+other+lies+by+duff+mckagan%2Caudible%2C53&sr=1-1 (It's So Easy And Other Lies by Duff McKagan). https://www.amazon.com/Being-John-Lennon-Ray-Connolly-audiobook/dp/B07YLBW9JB/ref=sr_1_1?crid=114HL4EUKUMCA&keywords=Being+John+Lennon%3A+A+Restless+Life+by+Ray+Connolly&qid=1653238795&s=audible&sprefix=being+john+lennon+a+restless+life+by+ray+connolly%2Caudible%2C58&sr=1-1 (Being John Lennon: A Restless Life by Ray Connolly). https://www.amazon.com/Passion-Fashion-Real-Story-Clash/dp/030681434X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=36QLTZDHUP0PF&keywords=Passion+Is+a+Fashion%3A+The+Real+Story+Of+The+Clash+by+Pat+Gilbert&qid=1653238815&s=audible&sprefix=passion+is+a+fashion+the+real+story+of+the+clash+by+pat+gilbert%2Caudible%2C78&sr=1-1 (Passion Is a Fashion: The Real Story Of The Clash by Pat Gilbert)....

After 7 long years with his captor, 14-year-old Steven Stayner escaped. He and another survivor, 5-year-old Timmy White showed up to the Ukiah Police Department hand-in-hand, 42 years ago this week. Steven wouldn't have escaped on his own, as he had been brainwashed to believe his captor had obtained legal custody of him. He just had to save Timmy from going through the kind of abuse he had been subjected to. Stayner was unquestionably a hero, immortalized in statue form in California, as well as in a book by Mike Echols, and a TV Miniseries in 1989. Unfortunately while Steven had escaped his captor, he couldn't shake the lasting effects of the trauma he had endured -- which caused a ripple effect throughout his family and their community. 3 NCLA Supports Cert Petition in Title IX Case As part of its efforts to enforce Title IX, the U.S. Department of Education has routinely pressured schools to deny due process to the accused in sexual-misconduct investigations. NCLA filed an amicus brief in support of Jane Doe's petition for a writ of certiorari before the U.S. Supreme Court in her case against the California State University system and various Title IX administrators. Mark discusses Title IX and NCLA's amicus brief in Jane Doe v. Timothy White, et al. 4 Stinson Deference, Fourth Circuit Confusion, and NCLA's Amicus Brief in Moses NCLA recently filed an amicus brief in United States v. Lenair Moses, urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to rehear the case en banc and address whether Stinson deference can increase criminal sentences. NCLA argues that the Fourth Circuit panel erred in upholding Lenair Moses's enhanced 10-year sentence under flawed reasoning that the Fourth Circuit should defer reflexively to the commentary of the United States Sentencing Commission, even when the applicable Sentencing Guideline is unambiguous. This panel of the Fourth Circuit's decision to cling to Stinson deference endangers individual liberty, distorts the independent judiciary, and violates due process by institutionalizing judicial bias. Steven Stayner, brother of notorious serial killer, Cary Stayner, was seven years old when he was abducted.Despite being held in captivity for seven years while attending school under a fake name, he thrived and went on to live a happy life until him untimely death.Steven never went out of his way to save himself, but when the pedophile that abducted him snatched up another little boy named Timothy White and brought him back to his home of horrors, Steven knew that he needed to act.He saved himself—and a five-year-old child—but hundreds of miles away, his brother was turning into a violent predator. In the end of this mini-series, we discuss the stories of these two boys.
In part two of our series on the Yosemite Park killer, we of course finish out the story of Steven Stayner, Timothy White, and Kenneth Parnell from part one, but we officially dive into the Yosemite Serial Killer, Cary Stayner. The murders took place in 1999 and came to be known as the Yosemite Park Murders, a series of killings which took place over a span of four months, when then 37 year old Cary was a handyman at a motel near Yosemite State Park. While there are many stories about people murdered while hiking, and people who come up missing from national parks, the crimes committed by Stayner were brutal, and not ones locals will soon forget.[FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/PodcastAfraidINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/PodcastAfraidYOUTUBE: https://tinyurl.com/3mwr54tbTIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastafraid[PATREON]Do you need more Even the Podcast is Afraid content, and would like to help support the show in the process? Kenneth Parnell was a serial sex offender living in Northern California when he kidnapped Steven Stayner from his home. He created a new identity for Steven and held him captive for several years before abducting Timothy White. The two boys would encounter abuse for years before finally making their incredible escape. But the trauma and damage done to them would have a rippling effect on their families. Savannah details how Kenneth and an accomplice were able to evade authorities for so long, how Steven and Timothy managed to hitchhike to a police station and get Kenneth arrested, and how potentially the effect of losing his brother would cause Steven's brother Cary Stayner to ultimately become a serial killer himself. This week I was able to interview Timothy White from Southern Oregon. Timothy has extensive knowledge about Shaman's and Shamanic journeys throughout the world, he used to own the publication Shaman's Drum. In this episode we discus plant medicine and in particular ayahuasca and the journey that leads to healing and self inquiry. Steven Stayner was just 7 years old when he was abducted on December 4th, 1972. He spent the next 7 years living with a vile paedophile named Kenneth Parnell. Parnell, kept Steven for these years, moving around California, enrolling Steven into various schools under the name of Dennis Parnell.Parnell struggled to hold down a stable job, kept on the move and abusing Steven. He made several attempts with Steven to abduct other children, only to have them fail every time. Recruiting another person to abduct a child, Parnell abducted 5 year-old, Timothy White, in 1980.Steven, being determined to spare Timothy the same fate he had endured, escaped with him in the middle of the night. They went to a police station and explained their stories.Kenneth Parnell was arrested the next morning.Steven, once returned to his grateful parents and family, had a hard time readjusting to his new life.Listen this week to hear about the full, albeit, short life of Steven Stayner; the sentencing of Parnell and all those involved in this new episode of Not Me, Not Today Podcast.⚠️ Trigger Warning : this episode contains child abduction and child sexual abuse *although kept to a minimum*. The Origins of the Rastafarian Movement in Jamaica. The first rasta, a Jamaican man named Leonard Howell, is a fascinating figure (more interesting than you think). If you think Rastas are a big fat punchline to a joke, agree with the negative stigma or just don't have a clue why the heck people are Rastas... this is a great podcast for you to get started. Let's set our biases and prejudice aside and talk about where this movement came from and why so many people to this day call themselves rastas. I will hold your hand through this spiritual movement and I guarantee you will be the only person in your friend group who knows this much about Rastas.A tantalizing historical journey where I discuss the history of the Rasta movement, crack jokes, and finally talk about Caribbean history in my favorite episode to date — because it's hands down the funniest. If you want to know about Ras Tafari, Haile Selassie, Jamaican Colonial History, Marcus Garvey, The Piby, Indian immigration to Jamaica, indentured servants, Athlyi Rogers, and learn about everything Rastafarian BEFORE Bob Marley, give this podcast a listen and don't forget... This episode we present a series of interviews around the Black is Beautiful Beer Collaboration Project. Over 900 breweries representing every state in the US and over 17 countries around the world have joined the effort to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. We start off the episode with the man who started the project, Marcus Baskerville, Founder and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, Texas. Next, we are joined by Timothy White, Jr., one of the founders of the first wholly black owned brewery in Pennsylvania, Harris Family Brewing in Harrisburg. Harris Family has joined in the project with several brew day collaborations with Love City Brewing, Two Locals Brewing, and Tröegs. Finally, we catch up with our old friend, Sam Masotto, owner of Bonn Place Brewing in Bethlehem, PA. Bonn Place brewed their version of the Black is Beautiful beer with another local, minority owned brewery, Country Club Brewing and has committed to donating the proceeds to black-owned small businesses. Part of this project is encouraging breweries to commit to the long term work of promoting equality in their businesses. Though we’re not brewing a beer, we are committed to making a concerted effort to do our part to promote diversity and representation in the world of beer. If you would like to learn how you can help support the black community in the struggle for justice and equality, Black Lives Matter has provided a comprehensive list of resources here: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/

Podcast: This week on The Mystical Positivist, Rob and I speak with two previous guests on the show Sam Webster and Gus diZerega about their new project Pagan Currents, an online open source creative commons journal for serious Pagan work intended for practicing Pagans rather than academics, while acknowledging the overlap between the two groups. We’re excited to have Tim White of J.L. Dunn & Company join us to discus the unique challenges of Being a General Contractor in Boston and the evolution of the construction business. We covered a wide range to topics including: What’s the difference between a GC and CM? Are there any true GC’s left out there? Is the pendulum swinging back? Is it challenging to get multiple bids in a market where everyone is extremely busy? How has the skilled labor shortage affected Tim’s business in Boston? Do you feel that the quality of drawings has diminished over the years? What do you think accounts for that & how does it affect your jobs. Recommendations for a developer on hiring a contractor? What questions should they ask? What’s the difference between GMP and lump sum and are there situations where one is better than the other? Developers are sometimes lured by a low conceptual level budget and then come to find out pricing is much higher. What advice do you have for developers to avoid falling into such a trap?
