“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we've got part two of our talk with Simon Raymonde. He was one-third of the incredible band Cocteau Twins and he's got a new memoir out now called “In One Ear.” If you're in the UK, it's available right now -if you're in the States, you'll have to wait a bit for a release here. Today, he talks more about the book, his band project Lost Horizons, and a seriously bad health scare. "Thread of Clouds" and " Wahlia" by Blue Dot Sessions. For this episode we're joined by the admirable Simon Raymonde, sometime Cocteau Twin, head honcho at Bella Union Records and author of the autobiographical In One Ear. We commence by asking our guest about growing up as the son of the legendary Ivor Raymonde, string arranger on umpteen hits by pop idols from Billy Fury to the Walker Brothers. We hear clips from Ira Robbins' 1989 audio interview with Raymonde Sr.'s most famous client Dusty Springfield — and discuss a Ray Connolly piece from 1970 in which she more or less outs herself as gay. Simon then talks about his days behind the counter at Beggars Banquet Records and how they led to his joining the Cocteaus in 1984. Clips from a 1996 audio interview with the trio prompt his reflections on writing and performing with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser — and how their extraordinary music won the admiration of everyone from Prince to Jeff Buckley. Simon also recalls the fallout from leaving indie sanctuary 4AD for major-label Fontana. We conclude by asking our guest about the 27-year-old Bella Union label, home to Midlake, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, John Grant, Flaming Lips and Father John Misty… and to 17-year-old Nell Smith, who tragically died in a car accident three days before we recorded this episode. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces — Val Wilmer's 1966 interview with Sun Ra; Lester Bangs' rave review of the Temptations' Sky's the Limit — Jasper brings the episode to a close with his thoughts on early interviews with Alicia Keys (2001) and Amy Winehouse (2004). Many thanks to special guest Simon Raymonde. In One Ear: Cocteau Twins, Ivor and Me is published by Nine Eight Books and available now from all good bookshops. Visit the Bella Union Vinyl Shop at 25 Church St in Brighton and online at bellaunionvinylshop.com. Pieces discussed: Cocteau Twins, Cocteau Triplets, Cocteau Quadruplets, Dusty Springfield audio, Dusty Springfield: Dusty at 30... loneliness is an occasional thing, Sun Ra: Flying Saucers Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Ha!, The Temptations: Sky's the Limit, Alicia Keys: Move over Macy and Whine and Song; Amy Winehouse hits out at girl singers and why she's one of the very best.

Simon Raymonde's affecting and beautifully written memoir ‘In One Ear' records life in the ‘60s growing up with a father who wrote and arranged for Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro and the Walker Brothers, the impossibly shy promotional activities of the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil and the struggles and eventual jackpot of the Bella Union record label he founded. He's so perceptive, observant and self-mocking and we loved this energetic podcast which, among much else, lands upon … ... why 1979 was the Golden Year. … the time Scott Walker came to his parents' house. … why the Cocteau Twins might have tanked in the current age of self-promotion. … how a loathing for Phil Collins was a Sliding Doors moment. … the problem with bands that don't talk to each other. … why they refused to appear on Top Of The Pops. … following Rancid and the Ramones at Lollapalooza in 1996 and the sobering events that ensued. … why the Old Grey Whistle Test was “not a happy experience”. … the cryptic language of Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics why he never asked her what they meant. … “if I hadn't worked at the Beggars record shop I wouldn't be talking to you now”. … why bands are “less naïve now”. … and “Cocteau Twins - swirling sepulchral shards of sound that patter like raindrops against the windows of your mind” – ©️ the Music Press in 1985. TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! This week's guest, English singer/guitarist Miki Berenyi (Lush, Piroshka, Miki Berenyi Trio), brings us a record by Scottish alternative band - and for a time 4AD labelmates of her band, Lush - Cocteau Twins and their stunning 1984 release 'Treasure'. Evocative, ethereal, and anchored by singer Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly voice, its sublime, almost alien beauty is hard to describe. But we try. Songs discussed in this episode: Strange Fruit - Cocteau Twins (John Peel BBC session, 1983); Ladykillers - Lush; Needles and Pins - The Searchers; Cherry-coloured Funk, Wax and Wane, Ivo, Lorelei, Beatrix, Persephone - Cocteau Twins; For Love - Lush; Yes - McAlmont and Butler; Pandora (For Cindy) - Cocteau Twins; Everlastingly Yours - Piroshka; Amelia, Aloysius - Cocteau Twins; Leaves Me Cold - Lush (Peel Session, 1990); Cicely, Otterley, Donimo - Cocteau Twins; Light From A Dead Star - Miki Berenyi Trio (Recorded live during Paris Popfest, 2023

The Autumns, Beach House, The Dears – fucking love The Dears, Dirty Three, Emmy the Great, Fionn Regan Howling Bells, John Grant, Lanterns on the Lake, Laura Veirs, Lift to Experience, Midlake, The Walkman…For the last 25 years, Bella Union have been responsible for bringing me some of the best music I've ever heard. And before that, the label's owner, Simon Raymonde, in tandem with Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie in the immortal Cocteau Twins, was responsible for bringing me even more. I can't imagine what my listening habits would look like without Simon and without Bella Union, and so I'm delighted to speak to him on this episode about all of the above and more. We talk about the band Simon is currently managing – the brilliant Big Joanie – how Bella Union came to be, his thoughts on the legacy of his old band the Cocteau Twins, his feelings on where the record business finds itself in 2023, his forthcoming memoir, and his posthumous relationship with his father, the late, great Ivor Raymonde. How great? I mean, he wrote the Dusty Springfield song 'I Only Want to Be with You'! This week we welcome a genuine legend to the show, Mr. Simon Raymonde from seminal Post-Punk band Cocteau Twins. It would be hard to overstate the influence Cocteau Twins had on the Indie scene, trumpeted by John Peel, coveted by Prince and (let's not underplay this), easily the most nominated artist for a Phonographic Memories slot on @WhatGoesPod EVAH! Bella Union Boss and former Twins member Simon Raymonde pops in to talk about octogenarian frontmen, finding yourself in a band and how his father played a seminal role in English pop music. Also this week A&E becomes D&E as our Anne, sorry Debs, steps out of her cocoon. We also discuss the price of music and whether all we really need is trinkets. God love ya for loving us. Our Anne ennit.... https://radiotoday.co.uk/2022/01/jazz-fm-presenter-anne-frankenstein-reverts-to-her-real-name/ Thanks for listening. And now for something completely different..... Howdy Hope you're all well and staying safe. Now then, where to start. The Cocteau Twins, Elizabeth Fraser, Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie, one of my favourite groups of all time. Formed in Scotland in 1979 and disbanded in 1997. How to describe them, labelled as Goths initially, dream pop, shoe gaze, ethereal, none of these fully explain their greatness or sound imo. Too hard to pigeonhole, a truly unique band. If there is such a place as heaven and it doesn't sound like Elizabeth Fraser I'm not sure I'd want to go. Probably better if I let their music do the talking for me. Featuring tracks from 1982 through to 1996. Some obvious selections, some not so. Music has always been Simon Raymonde's life. As a member of seminal band Cocteau Twins during the 80s and 90s, and latterly as the head of Bella Union record label – which looks after artists including Tim Burgess, Fleet Foxes, John Grant and Father John Misty – going to gigs, travelling, and releasing music was everything. But thanks to the Covid-19 shutdown, he's had to change everything – and through it, has discovered a new way to live his life. We chat to Simon about leaving London for the South coast, the impact of lockdown on him and his artists, and how he sought solace during Lockdown 1 by working on his new Lost Horizons album. But it wasn't until the start of this year that Simon made some radical changes to his life, afforded by Lockdown 3. Realising he had reached a fork in the road when it came to his own health and wellbeing, he embarked on a totally new approach, and has found the results life-changing. We talk to Simon about how the pandemic provided him with this epiphany, why he feels he's now a better husband and father, and how he feels about a post-Covid future. We also share some love about his artist Tim Burgess' Twitter Listening Parties, and why they've proved such a hit during Covid times. The new Lost Horizons album In Quiet Moments is out now In Quiet Moments | Lost Horizonslosthorizonsband.bandcamp.com › album › in-quiet-m... My guest in this episode is Will Lulofs. The observant amongst you will notice that there is a connection to my previous guest Tim Lulofs, as Will is his son. Dad would be the first to say that what is more significant than Will's parentage is that over the past 13 years he has released six critically acclaimed albums (with a seventh on the way) under the name of Will Stratton. Born in California in 1987, mostly raised in New Jersey and currently an upstate New Yorker, Will has a family background steeped in Americana and is the great-grandson of a travelling preacher. He started playing piano at the age of 4, guitar at 12 and did his first song writing and recording while at high school, before going on to study philosophy and music composition. In 2016 Will signed to one of the best independent labels there is, Bella Union, after its founder, Simon Raymonde, discovered his music on Bandcamp. The first release on Bella Union was “Rosewood Almanac” in 2017 which was described as: “a work of fragile magic, a hypnotic combination of beautifully breathy voice and exquisite lyrical imagery, gorgeous melodies and similarly soft-spun instrumentation, centred on his thrumming acoustic guitar and the verdant presence of velvet strings.”Will takes us through his story, talks about his influences and gives some fascinating insights into the creative process , the things that challenge and fulfil him, and some of the practical issues of being a recording artist. Will has a deep love and connection with the British "Folk movement" of the early 70's - Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention, but his taste and influences are wide ranging. They go from Debussy, Chopin and Erik Satie through ambient and electronic music to the film music of Max Richter and Jonny Greenwood . All of this and more is included in the Spotify Playlist below. It's one of the most eclectic we have had on the show and its all the better for that - enjoy :-)Please cut and paste into your browser https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Lwm0Af64D34LreNXyGCTG?si=QszIsi4lSHCRZLXcGUmVIg
Lost Horizons - "I Woke Up With An Open Heart (feat. The Hempolics)," from the 2020 album In Quiet Moments on Bella Union. KEXP is a listener-funded nonprofit, and we need your help to keep creating podcasts like this one. Donate now for our Fall Fundraising Drive! Lost Horizons unites the talents of Richie Thomas (aka Dif Juz) and Simon Raymonde (bassist of Cocteau Twins and founder of record label Bella Union), two former 4AD recording artists in the '80s. Their 2017 debut full-length Ojalá featured a stellar cast of guest vocalists, including Marissa Nadler, former Midlake frontman Tim Smith, and Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission. And, on their forthcoming sophomore LP In Quiet Moments, they reinvite those three stunning voices, adding John Grant, Porridge Radio, Penelope Isles, and more to their cast. London-based soul group The Hempolics appear on today's featured Song of the Day. The duo gave their guests the following theme to inspire their lyrics: "Death and rebirth," Raymonde confirmed via a press release. "Of loved ones, of ideals, at an age when many artists that have inspired us are also dead, and the planet isn’t far behind. But I also said, ‘The most important part is to just do your own thing, and have fun.'” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer. For our second season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. We got to chat with Simon Raymonde, the bassist of dream pop legends The Cocteau Twins and owner of the indie record label Bella Union. He talked about what it was like taking several decades off of making his own music to help foster the dreams of a new generation of bands as well as his return to the stage, which included a surprising number of Mellotrons. Thanks again for listening! Multi award winning actor and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge drops by to chat about new book, Fleabag - The Scriptures, which is the ultimate companion to the hit BBC series. She also tells us what her dream writing day looks like, what it was like working on the new James Bond film, and working with Andrew Scott. Simon Raymonde of Bella Union joins me to chat about his label's latest release: Odyssey: The Sound Of Ivor Raymonde. Elsewhere in the Maths of Life, Dr Hannah Fry gets into the misuse of the word exponential and what it actually means, and demonstrates the weirdness of infinity. Finally, Rhianna Dhillon gives us her top picks in This Week's Watchlist from new BBC coming of age comedy, Ladhood to new whodunit film, Knives Out.
This week, we’re joined by a who’s who of indie royalty. John Grant - American singer-songwriter, multi-linguist, former member of the Czars, and now an incredibly successful solo artist in his own right – guides us through this episode. He’s joined by Pulp founder and frontman Jarvis Cocker, one of the greatest voices in UK music; musician, producer, record label boss and former Cocteau Twins bassist and keyboard player, Simon Raymonde; and Gruff Rhys, Welsh musician, composer, producer, filmmaker, author, and man of many bands, including Super Furry Animals. Led by John, they’ll be discussing how your career changes your relationship with music, the strains of being a travelling musician, and how to perfect the art of the wedding DJ.
Chris Skudder and John Anderson meet Tottenham Hotspur fanatic Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins and Bella Union Records ahead of Spurs' big day in Madrid against Liverpool in the Champions League Final
Cocteau Twins with Simon Raymonde in conversation. Cocteau Twins were a Scottish rock band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth by Elizabeth Fraser (vocals), Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine), and Will Heggie (bass), with Heggie replaced by multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde in 1983. The group has earned much critical praise for its distinctive ethereal sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, which often abandoned recognizable language altogether. They have been recognized as pioneering the 1980s subgenres of ethereal wave[7] and dream pop, and were associated with the UK label 4AD for much of their career.
We talk to writer and beekeeper Helen Jukes about her new book “A Honeybee Heart has Five Openings”, discuss the life of musical arranger and songwriter Ivor Raymonde with his son, musician and label head Simon Raymonde, and learn the story of Lisbon with author and journalist Barry Hatton.
