"Da Da Da" tube du groupe allemand Trio en 1982, sonorités minimalistes comme le texte, des Da Da Da, il y en a beaucoup. "Imagine" ist 1971 das zweite Soloalbum von John Lennon nach der Trennung der Beatles. Bei uns in Deutschland kam die Platte am 08. Oktober 1971, einen Tag vor John Lennons 31. Geburtstag raus. Ein Album, das die Welt verändert hat. Es schwankt zwischen Rückblick auf die Vergangenheit und einem Aufbruch zu etwas Neuem. Am bekanntesten ist vermutlich der Titelsong des Albums "Imagine". Ein Song über den Traum von einer Welt in Frieden und ohne Grenzen. Und auch 50 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung hören wir „Imagine“ immer wieder – auf Friendensdemos, bei Olympischen Spielen, Katastrophen oder auch in Pandemiezeiten. "Imagine" ist einfach ein Sinnbild einer besseren Welt. Neben diesem ikonischen Lied bietet "Imagine" aber noch viele andere tolle Songs und Geschichten, über die wir in diesem Podcast sprechen wollen. Ami de Ray Charles, Billie Holiday ou encore Charlie Parker avec lesquels il a débuté dans le jazz, Jimmy Scott n’a pas connu la même reconnaissance.Le musicien a fait ses débuts – tout comme Quincy Jones – au sein de l’orchestre de Lionel Hampton qui le surnomme « Little Jimmy » du fait de sa petite taille et de sa voix d’enfant. Un timbre qu’il hérite d’une maladie génétique, le syndrome de Kallmann , qui a eu pour effet d’arrêter sa mue. Le musicien sort deux disques (dont un produit par Ray Charles) sur le label Savoy Records, label qui ne le soutient pas vraiment et lui mettra même des bâtons dans les roues quand il sortira plus tard son album The Source sur Atlantic Records. Des déconvenues qui rendront la voix de Jimmy Scott de plus en plus rare malgré le soutien de ses pairs…Little Jimmy disparaît de la circulation pendant près de deux décennies. On le croisera dans la loge noire de Twin Peaks, chantant « Sycamore Trees »…Au début des années 90, des disques ressortent et en 1998 sort Holding Back The Years, un disque dans lequel il reprend « Jealous Guy » de Donny Hathaway, et ce titre de Prince, « Nothing compares 2 U » ; composé par le natif de Minneapolis en 1984 mais que le love symbol a donné à son groupe The Family.Un titre d’abord repris par Sinead O’Connor mais qui retrouve ici le berceau jazz. The Beatles kicked off sessions for Rubber Soul with a song John wrote based off a lyric lifted from an Elvis song. It's an interesting case that on a record where they tap into the idea that "the word is 'Love'" but close that record out with "Run For Your Life," perhaps the most aggressive and threatening song Lennon ever wrote. The lyrical content being at odds with all things "fab," it's a shame that a band so known for bringing joy and happiness never took the time to second guess what they were singing about on this track. It's the angrier, scarier version of the possessive side of himself on display later in "Jealous Guy." Disowned by Lennon himself in the 70s, and named as the worst Beatles song by NME Magazine, "Run For Your Life" is the rare severe misstep in the band's catalog.  This week we're joined by Diana Erickson, co-host of The Beatles podcast "Another Kind of Mind," a podcast which presents a fresh, well-researched, irreverent, nuanced, and emotionally intelligent analyses of the Beatles' story. The history of rock music is in large part a history of men writing condescending and degrading songs about women, so it's interesting when a songwriter like John Lennon - with a track record of some of rock's most notoriously misogynistic lyrics - performs a song that at first listen appears to be apologetic and self-critical. They say that when Oscar Wilde heard an intelligent comment uttered by James Whistler (although I have heard it the other way too), he sighed and said, 'I wish I had said that'. To which Whistler replied (Or Wilde, depending on the version!) - 'You will, Oscar. You will!' Isn't it annoying when you feel that you should have had something and you see someone else with it? A new car, a new contract, or even a good original joke... ...or the Torah. I mean, they were all offered it. I heard once that rather than us being the 'chosen nation', we should be called the 'choosing nation' - as the others had equal opportunities to accept it. Here we find the root of why Har Sinai got its name - a real hatred came into the world. A hatred and a jealousy. Even the roots of the two words are similar - שנא and קנא - possibly the letter difference (200 in number alludes to the Talmudic dictum that 'he who has 100, wants 200') even points to the correlation between these two, which are also, it turns out, intertwined with love - see Dovid's relationship with Yonasan and Shaul. Very complicated indeed. Or Yosef and his brothers. The words 'hate' and 'envy' are constantly being employed - all because a third party had been displaying an apparent biased love. What is the psychology behind this? Is it just human nature? And what can we take from this into our lives?

New Edition is an American R&B group from the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 1981. The group reached its height of popularity in the 1980s. During the group's first experience with fame in 1983, its members were Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. Tresvant was the lead singer on most of the songs. Bobby Brown was voted out of the group in 1985 and embarked on a solo career. The group continued for a time with its remaining four members, but eventually recruited singer Johnny Gill, who would be introduced on their 1988 album Heart Break. The group went on hiatus in 1990, while its various members worked on side projects, such as the group Bell Biv DeVoe. Gill and Tresvant also recorded successful solo albums. 1981–1985: Rise to stardom The group scored its big break in 1981, performing at the local Hollywood Talent Night held at Boston's Strand Theatre by singer/producer Maurice Starr. The first prize was $500 and a recording contract. Though the group came in second place, an impressed Starr decided to bring the group to his studio the following day to record what would become their debut album, Candy Girl. Released in 1983 on New York producer Arthur Baker's Streetwise Records, the album featured the hits: candy girl, is this the end, and popcorn love or Jealous love The first single “Candy Girl" is an R&B and bubblegum Released in November 1982, it is the first single from their debut album The song hit number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 31st best-selling single of the year.which went to number one on both the American R&B singles chart and the UK singles chart. This is as good as anything Michel or the Jackson five ever cut that’s a rewind promise.. I didn’t invent this stuff. But I was there you hear me say a lot.. I was right there (Clip is this the end) Pop Corn Love / ”Jealous Girl", "Popcorn Love”/Jealous Girl is a single by New Edition, released on August 6, 1983. It was released as the third and final single from their debut album, Candy Girl on the Streetwise label. The single read #25 on the R&B chart. Another Bad Creation covered "Popcorn Love"'s flip side, "Jealous Girl"[2] (in a slightly extended version) on July 23, 1991, which also reached #25 on the R&B chart. Mase recorded a parody of "Jealous Girl" for his Harlem World album, called "Jealous Guy", with him, 112 and Puff Daddy singing like New Edition but with altered lyrics. Clip popcorn love thats the the third single and final release for the new edition and their debut effort Next up for the growing young men from the Roxbury neighborhood in Boston. New Edition is the second studio album released by the American quintet that we’re studying this week on the OSR . the self titled album New Edition  was released in North America on July 6, 1984 . It was their first album on MCA Records. It was also their first album without manager/producer Maurice Starr who would depart from the group during the making of the album after the group accused him of stealing their monetary earnings from their platinum debut. Maurice Starr to this day, steadfastly denied taking the boys' earnings from them. The dispute came after the group members received their checks in their mailboxes only to discover that they were only given $1.87 despite the success of their debut album, Candy Girl and their accompanying US tour. Angered,,, New Edition filed a lawsuit against Starr and demanded out of their contract. Starr relented and gave the boys the freedom to leave. The bitter split eventually led to Starr's creating "the white New Edition": New Kids on the Block. Which will get their own show on the old school rewind. They re a big part of the door being flung open with linn drums and Roland 808 music. NKOTB was dope. That’s for the haters and for another weeks podcast.. Meanwhile, the boys left Starr's label, the independent Streetwise Records and signed a new contract through Jump & Shoot Productions with MCA. Being given a bevy of producers including R&B mainstay Ray Parker, Jr. and writer-producer Mike Sembello of "Maniac" fame among them, the group released their self-titled second album in the summer of 1984 to huge success. The NEW EDITION album was produced by Vincent Brantley & Rick Timas,  Grammy-nominated producer Michael Sembello  & Richard Rudolph, Ray Parker, Jr. and Peter Bunetta and Rick Chudacoff. The album reached #6 on the Billboard 200 the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart (where it peaked for five weeks). and #1 on the Irish Albums Chart, The Release and reaction Thanks to more thorough promotion and music tailored for more of a mainstream audience, New Edition won new fans upon the release of this album. The first two singles: "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man" both became top twenty pop hits and reached number one on the R&B singles chart. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard pop albums chart and number one on the R&B albums chart. It later spawned the top forty pop hit with the ballad "Lost in Love" and the uptempo top forty R&B single, "My Secret (Didja Gitit Yet?)". The album was certified double-platinum. This album was also promoted under a more clean-cut pop image for the group, much different from the streetwise persona they had during their first album, a marketing decision that various group members would later admit that they weren't thrilled about at the time.[citation needed] New Edition the album  release 1 spun off the top five hit "Cool It Now" "Cool It Now" is a 1984 hit single by American group New Edition, and is the first single from their eponymous second album, New Edition. In the US, the song entered the Hot Black Singles chart on September 1, 1984. The song peaked at number 4 in January 1985 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With the group now signed to MCA Records, "Cool It Now" (and the album from which it came) was given more extensive and widespread promotion than any single from their previous album (which had been released through a smaller, independent label), and helped bring the group a bigger fan base. The song was the group's first top 10 pop single, peaking at number four on the pop chart, and their second number one R&B hit. The song is notable for a midsection rap recited by lead singer Ralph Tresvant, which calls out the rest of the group: "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike." In later years, the rap has been changed to include "Johnny" for the last member to join, Johnny Gill, either including his name as a fifth name called out or replacing "Bobby". Mr. Telephone Man", release 2 Mr. Telephone Man" is a song by New Edition, and the second single from their eponymous second album, New Edition. Released as a single, by December 8, 1984, it was being added to the most "Hot Black" radio station playlists. "Mr. Telephone Man" included lead vocals from Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell and Bobby Brown with a rap by Michael Bivins and was written by Ray Parker Jr. The song was originally recorded by teenage singer Junior Tucker, who included the song on his self-titled debut album on Geffen Records in 1983. Parker produced the original version as well as the cover by New Edition. The single reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart[2] and was the group's third number-one single on the Black Singles chart. Mixes included the instrumental and the "Extended Version". "Lost in Love" is a 1985 ballad by R&B/pop group New Edition, and is the third single from their eponymous second album, New Edition. Released in early 1985, the song peaked at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart. The single version for "Lost in Love" features some instruments that are beefed up and vocal parts towards the end that are cut and mixed with Ralph's lead vocals as compared to the original album version. On this version, Bobby Brown's high harmony part can be heard prominently from the bridge out. This alternate version is found on both their 2004 greatest hits album Hits and their 2005 greatest hits compilation Gold. My secret . While promoting their second album, the group was dismayed to realize that they weren't actually signed to MCA Records, but instead with the production company Jump and Shoot, which had its own deal with MCA; subsequently, all business matters pertaining to the group were controlled by the former. To buy themselves out of the stifling production deal, each of the five members borrowed $100,000 from MCA. Though it effectively separated the group from Jump and Shoot and allowed them to sign a new (and very long-term) contract to record for MCA directly, they were now in mortgage to the label. As a result, the group would be forced to continually record and tour during this period in order to pay off its debt.

John Lennon was not about to back down from a challenge. With his former songwriting partner achieving commercial success with the runaway US single Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey from the UK #1 RAM album, John’s solo work took a turn toward the charts. The Imagine LP was in many ways the culmination of everything John’s music had been over the years - equal parts catchy, light, heavy, political, hard-rocking, tender and introspective - missing only the kinds of radical experimentation that had alienated the general public in the past. From the downright bubbly Oh Yoko, to the haunting ballad Jealous Guy (a re-worked “Child of Nature” which had been kicking around since Rishikesh), to the iconic title track, Imagine was a home run for both critics and fans alike. John’s spite and anger toward Paul was on full display in the vicious How Do You Sleep, which Lennon explained to confused Beatle fans as a retort to Paul for messages directed toward him on RAM. The partnership was no more, but in its place a heightened sense of competition would drive both Lennon and McCartney to interesting new heights in the decade to come. In Rishikesh, the Beatles attended a lecture by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi about a "son of the mother nature". This inspired both Paul McCartney and John Lennon to write songs about the same subject. Both were demoed at George Harrison's Esher home in May of 1968. The demo featured Lennon's double-tracked vocal and an acoustic guitar. McCartney's composition "Mother Nature's Son" was selected for The Beatles (The White Album), while Lennon's song "Child of Nature" was not. And rightly so, I might add; Lennon's lyrics are as insincere as they are silly ('I was dreaming more or less...'). Lennon must have liked the melody, since he contined to play it, al the way through the Let It Be sessions to Imagine. There he updated the lyrics into Jealous Guy. Unfortunately, still as insincere and silly as 'Child of Nature' ("I was feeling insecure, you might not love me anymore'), it must rank as one of Lennon's poorest lyrics. Now you can compare Child of Nature and Jealous Guy yourself: for the first time, a full production of Child of Nature, based on Roxy Music's cover of 1981.

Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I'm an award-winning writer of historical fiction set in the Middle Ages and just about to have my seventeenth novel, THE TIME OF SINGING, published in the UK. In the USA I have recently agreed a deal to have two of my novels published – THE GREATEST KNIGHT and LORDS OF THE WHITE CASTLE.I began by writing near the historical romance end of the genre and have gradually moved along the line to mainstream historical fiction, telling the life stories of people who actually lived in the Middle Ages. I guess I'd be on the same author page list as Sharon Kay Penman, Philippa Gregory, and Anya Seton.As far as my personal writer's journey goes, I have been telling stories since I was old enough to talk. My earliest memory is of being three years old and making up a story one light summer evening when I'd been put to bed. I wasn't sleepy, so I opened out my handkerchief and I made up a story about the fairies printed on it. It's quite a vivid memory. I loved adventure stories as a child, both the historical kind and the ones that covered myth and legend. I loved folk tales from around the world and the ancient stories such as the Illiad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid. If I hadn't taken to writing historical fiction (after falling in love with a tall, dark handsome knight on a TV programme when I was fifteen), then I'd probably have taken to fantasy writing instead. Indeed, I still have a slight yen to rework some of the Scottish Border Ballads into new branches! Tell me about the story for which you’ve created a soundtrack. I create soundtracks for all my stories; it's an integral part of the writing process, so I guess I'll go with my most recently completed novel, THE TIME OF SINGING. This is about a twelfth-century lord called Roger Bigod whose father, through treachery, lost the trust of King Henry II. The latter razed the family castle at Framlingham and took away many of their lands. After his father died, Roger had to work his way back up fortune's ladder. While at court doing this, he met Ida de Tosney. She was King Henry's young mistress (reluctantly so) and had borne him a son. She and Roger got together after a few hiccups and married, but that didn't mean they left their problems behind. Far from it. Roger was still struggling to regain his inheritance and Ida was grief stricken over some things in her past (not to give the plot away). Her sorrow, combined with Roger's long absences on business for the Crown meant that their relationship was in danger of foundering. Both had to fight battles on several fronts - physical, political, emotional. The history of England at this period is woven into the story of Roger's and Ida's struggle. What is your playlist? 1. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS - ApocalypticaThis is an instrumental that runs as a general theme throughout the novel. The bittersweetness of the tune and arrangement are perfect for starting out Roger and Ida's story.2. THE PROMISED LAND - Bruce Springsteen.This is the hero's viewpoint as he faces up to his father. What does music mean to you? To your writing?Music has always exerted a strong pull for me. Right from the moment I wrote my first novel as a 15-year-old, I have used songs as a way of understanding my characters and for getting into and developing their emotional lives. Songs in themselves tell stories - frequently of deeply or strongly held feelings and I harness the resonances in lyrics and music as part of my creative process. I had popular music soundtracks to my novels long before film makers started using them regularly in blockbusters or on TV to sell cars and insurance! People are often surprised to know that I use modern hard rock music (among others) to inspire my novels, but it's my opinion that society changes, not people. The lyrics in a song such as Cat Stevens' Father and Son are as relevant to the Middle Ages as they are today, juxtaposing as they do the impatience and fire of youth with the tolerance and knowing of maturity. What kind of music do you like to write to?I don't actually write to music. I listen to the music away from my PC screen and I know when I get an adrenalin surge in the gut that it's right for the novel. I will gradually lay down a soundtrack during the first draft of writing and I will listen to it over and over again around the house or at the gym - basically while doing mundane stuff. The above mentioned resonances will come into play and enter my subconscious where they join the general melange of ideas and creativity. When I come to actually write, they'll have been processed ready to take their part in the writing. My favourite music is melodic but hard rock - Anberlin, Seether, Fair to Midland, The Used, Springsteen, Counting Crows, AFI. However, my tastes are eclectic. At the softer end I love traditional folk with a modern edge such as practised by Show of Hands. The only things you won't find me listening to are opera and hip-hop/rap. Having said that I do like operatic rock. Meat Loaf's a favourite and everyone should listen to the album Oceanborn by Nightwish. If THE TIME OF SINGING was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack?Loreena McKennit would be good. I love The Mummer's Dance and I'd be happy with a background track like that. Although rock works well for me as a creative medium, I think a movie would need something a bit more fluid with a wistful historical feel.
