TCW Podcast Episode 226 - Ray Kassar Ray Kassar rose from humble beginnings to become a talented, savvy, and personable executive. He began his career in the textile industry at Burlington Industries, where he eventually became president of its most profitable division. However, after the unexpected passing of Burlington's head, Kassar faced ageism and cronyism, which stifled his advancement. Despite climbing the corporate ladder again, he was passed over for a more tenured executive. Leaving Burlington, Kassar founded a company importing Egyptian cotton for the U.S., where he planned to work until retirement. However, Manny Gerard of Warner Communications recruited him to stabilize Atari after its recent acquisition. Kassar's leadership introduced a robust marketing strategy, reduced manufacturing defects, and turned Atari into a massive profit center. Though his rapid adaptation to the gaming industry sparked some resentment and controversy, Kassar's impact on Atari was undeniable. His story is one of nuance and twists, as Atari would not have achieved its success without his visionary leadership. Facile: ATARI GAMES. TCW Podcast Episode 104- A Holistic View of ET The game that has become so shrouded in myth and legend is brought to light in this holiday episode! We look at how E.T. was thrust upon Atari by Warner in a bid to bring Stephen Spielberg in to makes movies for Warner. With a massive royalty overhead, a short five week production time, and a massive brain drain at Atari Howard Scott Warshaw stepped up to the challenge. He took the ambitious task of programing E.T. for Atari, having done Raiders of the Lost Arc previously. Despite the time crunch he decided do an adventure like game which, in combination with a lack of mentorship, lead to some poor design choices. Though lauded as being 'the worst game ever' E.T. is just an unfortunate game that hit Atari at an inopportune time. Original E.T. TCW Podcast Episode 097 - Revisions and Updates 2 The podcast is four years old! We celebrate by looking back at past episodes, and revising subjects that Alex has found new information on! There is, of course, more and new information in regards to Atari. We also do some speculation into the origin of Scramble, some commentary on what has been going on at Blizzard Entertainment, and some new information in relation to the origins of Galaxian. TCW Podcast Episode 087 - Virtual History And now we discuss at the technology that has been just a few months away from revolutionizing video games for the past thirty years, virtual reality. While a hot topic again due to the emergence of the Occulus Rift and the PS4 VR, virtual reality has been a Holy Grail of computer graphics research since the early 1960s. We examine the origins of VR at the University of Utah and its refinement at Atari and VPL Labs before looking at several attempts to bring VR into the mainstream in the early 1990s. We end with a quick look at the state of VR today. Facile: ATARI GAMES. Anche stavolta con l'aiuto del Buon Signor Santilio: il dittatore nord-coreano del retrogaming.LINK DI OGGI: Orgoglio e Pregiudizio e Atari : Il regno di Nolan Bushnell (72-78) - https://www.spreaker.com/user/dottorgonzo/orgoglio-e-pregiudizio-e-atari-il-regno-Orgoglio e Pregiudizio e Atari : Il regno di Ray Kassar (78-83) - https://www.spreaker.com/user/dottorgonzo/orgoglio-e-pregiudizio-e-atari-il-regno-_1Orgoglio e Pregiudizio e Atari : Il regno di Jack Tramiel (84-96) - https://www.spreaker.com/user/dottorgonzo/orgoglio-e-pregiudizio-e-atari-il-regno-_2Orgoglio e Pregiudizio e Atari ReLOAD: Il regno di James Morgan (83-84) - https://www.spreaker.com/user/dottorgonzo/orgoglio-e-pregiudizio-e-atari-reload-ilLa vecchiaia non è cosa per signorine: Buon compleanno Atari VCS - https://www.spreaker.com/user/dottorgonzo/la-vecchiaia-non-e-cosa-per-signorine-bu----CONTATTI: Facebook (I Cugini Del Terribile): https://www.facebook.com/icuginidelterribile/Facebook (Una Trasmissione Di Nerda): https://www.facebook.com/Una-trasmissione-di-nerda-su-Atom-Radio-122732941929005/Sito Internet Personale (Simone Guidi): http://www.simoneguidi.infoL'Archivio Del Sig.Santilio: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu5oukegoskfJ7rx8zjqubA#Atari #AtariVCS #AtariGames

Dave Comstock, part 2 A couple of days after our interview, Dave Comstock (who worked at Atari on E.T. Phone Home, Superman III, and Clock & Dagger) e-mailed me saying he had remembered more stories from his Atari days. So we set up a second interview. This interview took place on November 14, 2017. “The project team was actually treated to a meal with Ray Kassar and some other executives in the executive dining room … it was like, one of the fanciest restaurants that you’ve ever been to.” Video version of this interview

TCW Podcast Episode 046 - Atari, Ray Kassar and Warner We continue on to part three of our four part look into Atari. We delve into Atari under the leadership of Ray Kassar. It becomes apparent that while Ray did make mistakes the leadup to the fall of Atari cannot be entirely placed at his feet. We also explore the role of Warner in the direction Atari took and the difficult decision on whether to concentrate on home console or PC. We also delve into the Arcade side of things and how, while successful, they were not without their growing problems. TCW Podcast Episode 045 - Atari, Ventures and Acquisitions In our second of four episodes detailing the rise and fall of the core Atari company we go over the rapid expansion of the company, and its ever increasing need for capital. Atari had to court venture capital, and got the patronage of Don Valentine. Later on to secure the funding needed for the VCS launch they had to be acquired by a larger company; that company was Warner Communications. This acquisition as we start to explore was a blessing and a curse. It ultimately led to the ouster of Nolen Bushnell, and Joe Keenan from Atari. Now it would start a new era under the leadership of Ray Kassar. Dr. Priscilla Laws, AtariLab AtariLab was a hardware and software package for the Atari 400 and 800 computers. The AtariLab Starter Set with Temperature Module was released in 1983. The Light Module add-on was released in February 1984. AtariLab was developed at Dickinson College under the direction of physics professor, Dr. Priscilla Laws. Dr. Laws joined the faculty at Dickinson in 1965. She has dedicated herself to the development of activity-based curricular materials and computer software to enhance student learning in introductory physics courses — which started with AtariLab. This interview took place May 14, 2015 Teaser quotes: “I saw somebody dip a thermistor into cold water — ice water — and a real-time cooling curve was appearing on the screen. And it blew me away.” “So, Ron said: ‘I watched Ray Kassar open the safe, and he pulled $200,000 in bills out of the safe. He handed it to the woman and he said “Please say no more.”’” LINKS Priscilla Laws’ bio 1984 Atari Connection article about AtariLab Promoting the Diffusion of Undergraduate Science Curriculum Reform: The Activity-Based Physics Suite as an Example by Priscilla Laws
