We draw on a new miniseries that is all about light gun games. And we start with getting to the truth behind the biggest conspiracy of them all: Area 51. How did this game save Atari Games (at least temporarily)? Was every CiCi's Pizza contractually obligated to have an Area 51 game in their arcade? How did a bodybuilder from a theme park and a model next door neighbor become arcade icons? What do we actually believe is in Area 51. We answer questions about the origins of Arcade Obscura and get graphic as we describe our most gruesome arcade-related injuries. Don't like those questions? Join the Podouken Discord and ask your own questions that could be included in a future episode: discord.gg/k5vf2Jz You can also like, comment, and subscribe to our YouTube channel where we post our listener question segments and additional content: https://www.youtube.com/@podoukenpodcast2716

Welcome to Podouken - formerly an arcade history podcast, now rebranded as one of the vast multitudes of D&D podcasts. Let's roll a d20, hope that our history modifiers are high, and talk about Atari Games' four player hack ‘n slash, Gauntlet. How did a game about Dungeons & Dragons inspire this game about Dungeons & Dragons? Is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (or M.O.M.) a good movie? Do focus groups provide anything of value? Why did we wait 128 episodes to discuss four player beat ‘em ups?! We're going the distance with our listener questions which include how far we would drive for our dream cabinet and makes us get all introspective about what we would like Podouken to be remembered for. You can join the Podouken Discord and ask your own questions for a future episode by clicking this completely safe link: discord.gg/k5vf2Jz You can also check out our YouTube channel for new content (or old content but with 100% more visuals): https://www.youtube.com/@podoukenpodcast2716

This week we're talking about our favorite Atari games, and by we I mean just me! I guess I'm just an old soul!
Send us a Text Message.A sequel to a beloved music festival. The OG of reality TV shows. Some of the weirdest video games Atari could create.Episode 156 of the podcast will combine the warm and fuzzy with the confusing as we travel through the halls of nostalgia. It kicks off with a trip back 30 years. The original Woodstock was a seminal moment of the 20th century. The artists who played it became legends and those in attendance will never forget it. Naturally, a sequel was in order, and that came in 1994. How did this spiritual successor to the original do?Reality television like it or not has been a staple of network programming for over 30 years. Some shows have become iconic while many others were quickly thrown in the trash. There had to be an original though. This week we go way Back In the Day and look at that OG of reality TV, Candid Camera. In a brand new Top 5 we will delve into the weird as we look at some of the weirdest video games Atari ever created. Not saying these games are necessarily bad, just that the premise behind them makes you wonder what substances the creators might have been on.A new This Week In History and Time Capsule will showcase the downfall of one of the first television networks, the DuMont Network. In this episode of 8111, we talk with John Bell, a New Jersey native who developed a passion for drawing and cars in his youth. To earn money as a kid, he and his brother sold his car drawings at dragster races. This passion led John to the Art Center's Transportation Design program. After graduating, he joined GM's Advanced Concept Studio in Detroit.John's career expanded further when he moved to California to work as a conceptual artist at Atari Games. By the late 1980s, he began a twenty-year intermittent tenure at Industrial Light & Magic, where he collaborated on films like "Star Trek IV," "Innerspace," and "Back to the Future II & III," earning an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA. In 1991, he became the Art Director for "Jurassic Park."Post-Jurassic Park, John explored new avenues at Nike as a Senior Designer, diversifying into footwear, clothing, graphics, and branding. He later returned to Northern California to create concept art for films such as "Men in Black," "Mission Impossible," and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." His work extended into production design for Dreamworks' "ANTZ."John then ventured into video game design at Electronic Arts, contributing to titles like "Freekstyle" and "Dead Space," and freelanced on animated films including "Cars" and "The Penguins of Madagascar."He later returned to ILM, working on Oscar-winning films "Rango", "Pirates IV" and "The Revenant." John has also collaborated with multiple clients including Nike, BMW, and Samsung. His broad portfolio spans film, gaming, automotive design, product design and advertising, showcasing his remarkable artistic talent. John is awesome and it was a real pleasure catching up with him and hearing his inspiring story.https://www.johnbell.studio/

Hey there, lovely listeners! In this episode of Unqualified Gurus, we've embarked on a rollercoaster ride through a whirlwind of topics. From dodging jury duty to Oscar's shining moment at car shows, we've explored the world of short kings and then found ourselves back in the front row of Oscar's photography. Also, who could forget those party robots that know how to groove better than we do? But hold onto your joysticks because we've delved into a blast from the past with Atari games. Don't forget to RSVP to Oscar's wild party – trust us, you'll want an invite too! Big red boots come back in yellow, and we looked at some new articles revolving X. Wait, is this the end of Cartoon Network as we know it? Fear not, as we've got the latest scoop on the Daredevil TV show update and the juicy details of Secret Invasion – Do ensure to skip the spoilers if you're planning to watch! With Barbie's success, movies based on Mattel toys were announced. Could this mean the birth of the Mattel Cinematic Universe? And brace yourselves, because they just "might" have confirmed the existence of aliens – yes, you heard that right! Oh, and did we mention ancient worms? Yep, we've got those too, and we've wrapped up the episode with a good old-fashioned game of "Would You Rather?" The normal edition might have you scratching your head, but just wait until you dive into the spicy edition. It's been a wild ride, dear listeners, but as the clock winds down, it's time to bid you farewell until next time. Stay curious and keep questioning the unqualified! Talking Joe 209 - Spy Hunter & Paper Boy review - For Cobra Convergence 7 - The Best Hama Joe comic you've never heard of! Its the annual fan Cobra Convergence 7 where across the month Joe fan creators share new content! And the loose theme this year is spies, so what better tie in than to look at an unknown but GREAT comic from GI Joe Legend Larry Hama with the name SPYHUNTER in the tittle! Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/ In this episode of next episode Mark and Tim are talking about what I am calling Larry Hama's best GI Joe comic that you have never heard of, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, released May 2021. (Even if technically speaking it isn't GI Joe). Released May 2021, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy #1-6 (DC, $3.99 each): a "digital first" (but in reality digital only) comic arriving on DC's digital first channels including ComiXology, with all six issues released on the same day You can find the issues digitally on Amazon (formerly comiXology) link https://t.co/e4xMWUOT2x You can also find the issue in other places if you were to Google "spyhunter paperboy viewcomic" The series is written by Larry Hama with art by Mac Rey, and letters by Pat Brosseau and it features a crossover between two old video game franchises, Spy Hunter and Paper Boy. There are very few details publicly available about the book - all 6 issues were quietly released as "Digital first" in May 2021 without any sort of fanfare or publicity by DC. There was really nothing in the comic itself that explained what the series was or why it existed and never had a print release. This is some of the best GI Joe like work by Hama since his prime in the 80s at Marvel with some stunning art. You can read the series and listen or listen and then read it or just listen, whatever!. There are a few spoilers but we've tried not to go too heavy on details of plot. Mac Rey (artist) - Arkansas resident, Mathew “Mac Rey” Reynolds started out in comics back in the early days of Malibu on books like AIRMAN and THE PROTECTORS, more recently he has worked on THE MERCENARY SEA from Image Comics. And “The RUFF and REDDY SHOW” from DC comics. After working on a creator-owned project called VIC FALCON with G.I. JOE writer Larry Hama, they went on to work together on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy. Spy Hunter: a vehicular combat action game developed by Bally Midway and released for arcades in 1983. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons. Paperboy is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called The Daily Sun along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986.

Thema: Gauntlet, 1985 Plattform: Arcade, später portiert auf Schneider CPC, ZX Spectrum, Apple II/IIgs, Atari 400/800, Atari ST, Amiga, C64, Macintosh, MS-DOS, Master System, NES u.a. The Listeners' Choice miniseries wraps up with a game that won't give you power and wealth by punching hard, or knowing economics, or looking good. Nope, you have to blow up a bunch of hover tanks in T-MEK released by Atari Games. What popular games was T-MEK inspired by? How did this game make Rob thousands of dollars? Is there a secret Atari meetup that we're blacklisted from? Why is there so little information out there about this arcade game?Thankfully the Game Designer of T-MEK, Matthew Ford, joins us to shed some light on the inspirations and development history of T-MEK plus what it was like working for Atari Games in the 1990s, and his life after Atari! Special thanks to JC (@specialcases on Twitter) for nominating this game for the Listeners' Choice series.

Two games about American youths wasting their lives. Two games with various ties to Atari. Coincidence? Yes, actually. Sometimes, this stuff just happens. Skate or Die! may bear the Ultra Games branding, but it really owes its existence to Electronic Arts—and ultimately, to the former Epyx crew that EA hired up when Atari Corp. sabotaged that company. And while Paperboy for NES comes to us from Mindscape, the original game debuted in arcades under the Atari Games label, only to be converted to NES by Tengen (AKA Atari Corp.), who was also filing charges against Nintendo and pilfering documents in order to attempt to sabotage THAT company. It's like poetry... it rhymes. Production note: NES footage captured from @Analogue Mini. Video upscaled to 720 with XRGB Mini Framemeister. On this episode of Queen Venerator, we welcome you to the inaugural edition of the edition of Title Fight, the show where we compare two different pieces of media that happen to share a name and determine which one is better. This time around, we pit Primal Rage, the 1988 Italian rage monkey horror movie, against Primal Rage, the 1994 dinosaur fighting game by Atari Games. Are either of them good? Not really! Is this another dumb idea? Most certainly. But one thing is for sure, there must be a winner, even if by default. Website: queenvenerator.com Twitter: @queenvenerator Instagram: @queenvenerator

#efficientzero #muzero #atari Reinforcement Learning methods are notoriously data-hungry. Notably, MuZero learns a latent world model just from scalar feedback of reward- and policy-predictions, and therefore relies on scale to perform well. However, most RL algorithms fail when presented with very little data. EfficientZero makes several improvements over MuZero that allows it to learn from astonishingly small amounts of data and outperform other methods by a large margin in the low-sample setting. This could be a staple algorithm for future RL research. OUTLINE: 0:00 - Intro & Outline 2:30 - MuZero Recap 10:50 - EfficientZero improvements 14:15 - Self-Supervised consistency loss 17:50 - End-to-end prediction of the value prefix 20:40 - Model-based off-policy correction 25:45 - Experimental Results & Conclusion Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.00210 Code: https://github.com/YeWR/EfficientZero Note: code not there yet as of release of this video Abstract: Reinforcement learning has achieved great success in many applications. However, sample efficiency remains a key challenge, with prominent methods requiring millions (or even billions) of environment steps to train. Recently, there has been significant progress in sample efficient image-based RL algorithms; however, consistent human-level performance on the Atari game benchmark remains an elusive goal. We propose a sample efficient model-based visual RL algorithm built on MuZero, which we name EfficientZero. Our method achieves 190.4% mean human performance and 116.0% median performance on the Atari 100k benchmark with only two hours of real-time game experience and outperforms the state SAC in some tasks on the DMControl 100k benchmark. This is the first time an algorithm achieves super-human performance on Atari games with such little data. EfficientZero's performance is also close to DQN's performance at 200 million frames while we consume 500 times less data. EfficientZero's low sample complexity and high performance can bring RL closer to real-world applicability. We implement our algorithm in an easy-to-understand manner and it is available at this https URL. We hope it will accelerate the research of MCTS-based RL algorithms in the wider community. Facile: ATARI GAMES. Chris, Jayson, and The Rust Man all list their top ten Atari games
Our first of third Lynx overviews for 1990 looks at the system's own home-brewed arcade legacy... well, sort of. Here, arcade titles by Atari Games (the game design company) make their way to a system distributed by Atari Corp. (the home computer company). Does the close connection between the two make for memorable coin-op conversions, or is Atari's post-crash selloff a rift that could never be repaired? Spoilers: It's the former. These are some excellent handheld adaptations of several popular arcade releases from the late ’80s, performing at a technical level that far outstrips anything the Game Boy or Game Gear could manage. The one exception to this rule is the one arcade sequel (sort of) that was originally developed by Epyx as a completely different property. (It shows.) TCW Podcast Episode 116 - The Atari Games You Are Looking For In this episode we continue our tradition of looking at Atari! This time a deep look at Atari Games. We look at the company starting with it's acquisition by Namco. We look at its progression through the 80's and 90's with many notable games. Unfortunately during the Siliwood era Atari was reacquired by Time Warner. After limited success the remnants of the company were sold off to Williams' where the name of Atari was given up in a legal dispute with Hasbro. Facile: ATARI GAMES. This week, we discuss video game lawsuits with our special guest, Norman Caruso, the Gaming Historian (http://thegaminghistorian.com/) . How did we get the Gaming Historian on this little dog and pony show? It’s hard to say. It could be that he’s a huge fan of obscure podcasts. … or it could be that he’s Kristin’s husband. What can we say? It’s a gigantic mystery. In this episode, Kristin starts us off with Devin Moore, a teenager who shot two police officers and a 911 dispatcher. When the police finally caught up with him, he said, “Life is like a video game. Everybody’s got to die sometime.” That mindset left a lot of people asking whether violent video games were to blame for his murder spree. Then Norman brings us our only non-violent crime of the day when he tells the fascinating story of Atari Games vs Nintendo. This lawsuit focused on the very first unlicensed games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Brandi wraps things up with Daniel Petric, the 16-year-old boy who shot his parents after they took away his copy of Halo 3. His defense attorney said that Daniel’s recent infection made him more susceptible to the game’s violent themes…. But we’re a little skeptical. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Rise and Fall of Video Gamings Most Vocal Enemy,” Kotaku “Court Rejects Appeal in Alabama Suit Blaming Game for Slayings,” WSFA “Grand Theft Auto Player Gets Death Penalty,” The Inquirer “Can a Video Game Lead to Murder?” CBS News “Driven to Kill?” People Magazine In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Game Over For Teen Who Killed Mother Over Video Game” by Edecio Martinez, CBS News “17-year-old Accused of Killing Mother Over Halo 3 Video Game May Get Verdict Soon” by Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer “Petric Sentenced to 23 Years To Life: Father Says Son Regrets Shooting Mother Over Halo 3 Video Game” by Jordan Cravens, The Morning Journal In this episode, Norman pulled from: “Game Over” by David Sheff A History of AT Games (http://mcurrent.name/atarihistory/at_games.html) Atari Games Corp v Nintendo http://digital-law-online.info/cases/24PQ2D1015.htm

In this episode Greg and George discuss the SNES port of the popular Atari Games arcade game Rampart from 1990. A mix of action, strategy, and puzzle elements come together very well in this great pseudo early tower defense game as you protect your castle, rebuild and expand it, and destroy enemies with cannon fires and also with engaging one and two player modes. Listen to us talk about how the game plays, what's new and enhanced on the SNES version of the game, and if it holds up today! Any questions, comments, feedback, etc. can be left on our Facebook page or e-mailed to the snespodcast@yahoo.com and as always thanks for your support!
Ted Kahn, Atari Institute for Educational Action Research Ted Kahn was creator of the Atari Institute for Educational Action Research, which awarded major grants of Atari home computer products, and consulting services to individuals, schools, and non-profit organizations. The group granted more than $1.25 million in products and services to about 100 innovative people and projects around the US and overseas. He also co-wrote the books Atari Games and Recreations, and Atari PILOT Activities and Games. This interview took place on October 9, 2015. In it, we discuss Ted's bother, Bob Kahn; and Tandy Trower, both of whom I have previously interviewed. Teaser quotes: "Its purpose is not just to give stuff away, but it's purpose is to really make sure that if it's given away, it's going to be given to people and organizations who can make some impact with it." "A thing, behind closed doors, in Washington, in which we had an entire group of Senators and Congressmen, for a period of about a day, to learn about all this stuff..." Antic magazine article about the Atari Institute for Educational Action Research: http://www.atarimagazines.com/v2n6/insideatari.html
Jeff Bell, Atari coin-op Jeff Bell worked for Atari Games for 31 years. He stated in 1973 as a Pong inspector, then moved to the engineering department, specifying requirements for parts. He worked in IT and system administration, and did other jobs in his more than three decades with the company. He also ran the Itsy Bitsy Bulletin Board System. This interview took place on November 7, 2015. In it, we discuss Bob Stahl, whom I previously interviewed. Teaser quote: "People say Atari died in — what? — 1983? Didn't happen. Didn't happen. We were in Milpitas making video games. We made great video games."
Kevin Hayes, Atari Games Ireland On this interview episode, we take a trip to Ireland, and to the coin-op side of Atari. Kevin Hayes was Controller for Atari Irerland Ltd. in 1978, then became manufacturing director. Later he moved to California where he was VP of Manufacturing for Atari Games, then vice president of Operations. This interview was recorded December 7, 2015. Teaser quote: "They had goats grazing on our property, and ... he killed one of their goats, he slaughtered it. ... the owner of the goat came on the property and wanted to be compensated for it."
