From a bedroom coder to Game Developer's Conference OG to the creator of one of the greatest one-on-one action strategy games of the 8 bit era, Jeff Johannigman worked for some of the most legendary companies of the 80s, Epyx, Electronic Arts, and Origin.   In Part 1, we talk about those early days, including the making of games such as G.I. Joe and Savage Empire and working with important figures like Ihor Wolosenko, Dani Bunten, Chris Crawford, Warren Spector, and Richard Garriot. Jeff's insight and storytelling skill make this a wonderful chat. TCW Podcast Episode 209 - Accolade Part 1   In part one of a two-part retrospective, we explore how the pressures of the North American video game crash combined with the desire to create more sophisticated products for home computer platforms led Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead to leave Activision and establish their own company, Accolade. Publishing a mix of internally developed and third-party product, Accolade finds success through several popular sports franchises, including Hardball, Jack Nicklaus Golf and, most significantly, Test Drive. By the beginning of the 1990s, the company remains small, but profitable, and is ready to parlay its success on computer platforms to still greater success in the rapidly growing 16-bit console market.   TCW 126 - Activision and Atari: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/activision-and-atari/ TCW 009 - History of Mediagenic Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/history-of-mediagenic-part-i/ TCW 010 - History of Mediagenic Part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/history-of-mediagenic-part-ii/ TCW 172 - The Computer Price Wars Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-computer-price-wars-part-1/ TCW 173 - The Computer Wars part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-computer-wars-part-2/ TCW 174 - The Computer Wars Part 3: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-computer-wars-part-3/ Law of the West (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrMk9RyCWKI PSI-5 Trading Company (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56E21gQq1TE Hardball (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=jejblUhw3hU High Noon Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9CR_tib0CA Gunsmoke 1966 opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui-mzTCmZPE Hardball (ZX Spectrum): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwuKr6sa0S8 Hardball (Sega Genesis): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkeCqRXihJE Fourth and Inches (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1672sYyMrg TCW 156 - Madden for some Football: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/madden-for-some-football/ Sundog: Frozen Empire (Atari ST): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg_hEY_hy9U Ace of Aces (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=059zzI6sdxo Hardball (PC/DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzPHxCO17aw Empire Strike Back (Atari 2600): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcWGvwYWHgY Jedi Arena (Atari 2600): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKLLpjF0QkM Mean 18 (PC DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4tX_ZVXwI0 Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf gameplay (PC DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOeXCiMbG8 Test Drive (PC DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAj1jPvz8t8 Accolade Comics (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkjkycHvHsE Test Drive (C64): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBl2zpfR3Bo TCW 122 - A Casual World Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/a-casual-world-part-1/ TCW 123 - A Casual World Part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/a-casual-world-part-2/ ISHIDO - The Way of the Stones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZmLAC3pVFM TCW 094 - Epyx not Epic: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/epyx-not-epic/ Star Control (PC DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSqJ0nPDDzs   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1980's seminal and genre-naming title, Rogue. We set the game in time and talk about what constitutes the genre before diving into some particulars. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: A few runs Issues covered: buying the game in a box, being disappointed in the ASCII, being turned off by procedural games, the differences in later games, the lore of the game, playing on a mainframe, the roots of so many games in text format, a top 50 achievement in games, the elements of the Rogue-like, procedural generation, inventory, randomized items, permadeath, getting over the hurdles in types of games, a chain reaction of bad things, clicking with a specific experience, simulating the rogue-like, a long shadow, playing to get a feel, being terrified of letters, trying things at random, a voyage of discovery, knowledge, renaming everything, consistent descriptions, thinking about strategy, the cumbersome bow mechanics, more depth than expected, the possibilities of emergence, anecdote factory, "wait, there are bear traps?"

Two games about American youths wasting their lives. Two games with various ties to Atari. Coincidence? Yes, actually. Sometimes, this stuff just happens. Skate or Die! may bear the Ultra Games branding, but it really owes its existence to Electronic Arts—and ultimately, to the former Epyx crew that EA hired up when Atari Corp. sabotaged that company. And while Paperboy for NES comes to us from Mindscape, the original game debuted in arcades under the Atari Games label, only to be converted to NES by Tengen (AKA Atari Corp.), who was also filing charges against Nintendo and pilfering documents in order to attempt to sabotage THAT company. It's like poetry... it rhymes. Production note: NES footage captured from  @Analogue  Mini. Video upscaled to 720 with XRGB Mini Framemeister. The price is RETRO “If this is your first time playing The Price Is Retro, this is how we play. I'm going to list off 4-5 games, and everyone else has to guess how much the games are worth in total. Whoever's guess is the closest wins that round, and the next person lists off their games. Everyone brought a list of games, and everyone guesses on each other's lists. At the end of the game, whoever won the most rounds wins the game! But look out for Polterguest! He guesses $300 on each list, and if he wins the game I have to give away a sticker from the merch store!” Dan's list Sam's list John's list “Spot the fake” “We're given a list of game titles, and we have to guess which one was made up”- Sam's list “Games Described Badly” “We're given several descriptions of video games and we have to guess what game is being described.” - Ambassador “Retro-pedia” “I'm going to start reading the description of a game from wikipedia. As soon as you think you know it, yell out your answer! If you're wrong I'm giving the other people an opportunity to guess. If everyone's wrong I'll keep reading until someone else yells out.” “Trivia Card”   Check out the Price Is Retro Database at Retrologic.games, we'll be having Flightsy on an episode coming up to talk PiR stats!     Show Topic   Topic: Controllers throughout history Arcades: Since whole cabinets were made for one game, truly unique controls could be tailored to a single game.   Joysticks and buttons became standard quickly, but button placement could vary. Trackballs (Centipede, Marble Madness) Dials (pong, arkanoid) Steering wheels and pedals (like every racing game) Light guns (like every arcade shooting game) Rotating Joysticks (Ikari warriors and other SNK games) DDR Consoles(main): Atari Joystick w/ 1 button NES controller gives us the D-PadGenesis does 3 buttons for some reason. 4 face buttons on the SNES, another industry standardSony's Dual shock Controller gives us dual analog, which becomes a gold standard for industry.N64 Controller: it's not that bad   Dreamcast: divisive. But ergonomic. I wish the stick was more grippy. Gamecube: perfection (except that D-pad)   3rd party and peripherals: Fightsticks - still tournament standard for most fighting games, esp. Street fighter. HOTAS or Yoke (hands on throttle and stick) - flight simsLight guns (NES Zapper, Master System, Super Scope)Powerglove Gameboy Tilt ControlsMicrophone - N64, Gamecube SNES Mouse (and N64 mouse for DD) R.O.B.Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc.   Alternative controllers (that you might play any game with)NES - Max, advantage, dogbone Genesis - 6 button Playstation - the aforementioned dual shock Community:Question: I wanna hear about the weirdest 3rd party controller you've ever used.   Fight Crab Fanatic — 03/28/2022 The Steam controller had a track pad instead of a right thumb stick. The pad had to be edited for every game on Steam. The trackpad had a cool haptic feedback   WondrousWill — 03/28/2022 I've used the Onimusha katana for PS2. I remember it somehow being better than I expected, but not good enough to use a 2nd time. Fortunately, it wasn't mine. It made for a very cool display piece, though.   SpiderShan — 03/28/2022 Do those Wii lightsaber Wiimote holders count? Not really controllers themselves. I've always wanted a DQ Slime controller.   ChrisHL94
