Our memories are fallible and malleable. In the 1980s and 1990s, recovered memory therapists convinced patients they had been sexually abused in some cases by satanic cults and repressed all memory of it. It starts at her feet and ankles and slides further and further up over her thighs and hips and waist. In no time it's up to her oxters. She bends down into it to pick up handtowels and washcloths and all such things as are sodden with it. They all look like seaweed— like those long strands of kelp that used to be called ‘mermaid-hair' or ‘foxtail.' Just as suddenly the water recedes and in no time the room's completely dry again. A terrible sense of stress is part and parcel of these emotions. At the end of the day she has nothing else to compare it to. She doesn't have the vocabulary for any of it. At her weekly therapy session she has more than enough to be going on with just to describe this strange phenomenon and to express it properly to the psychiatrist. She doesn't have the terminology or any of the points of reference or any word at all that would give the slightest suggestion as to what water might be. ‘A transparent liquid,' she says, doing as best she can. ‘Right,' says the therapist, ‘keep going.' He coaxes and cajoles her towards word-making. She has another run at it. ‘A thin flow,' she calls it, casting about gingerly in the midst of the words. ‘A shiny film. Dripping stuff. Something wet.' Professor Elizabeth Loftus is an authority on the power and limitations of human memory - but her ideas about the accuracy of our memories and the shortcomings of eyewitness evidence have proved highly controversial.

A satanic panic in the early 1980s culminated in the McMartin Preschool abuse trial, the then-longest and most expensive criminal trial in American history. The trial centered around 359 allegations of ritualistic satanic child abuse and concluded with zero convictions and a new understanding of the unreliability of recovered memories.  The satanic panic has subsided, but its indirect effects are still present today in how therapists work with childhood trauma. It's time for another Spiritual Quandaries panel discussion, this time on Recovered Memory Therapy (RMT). At one time, memory researchers believed that human memory worked like a video recorder. All one had to do was to find the right tape, play it back, and relive the memories precisely as they were originally experienced. However, subsequent research showed that this model was very inaccurate. In fact, most memories are simply forgotten and cannot be recalled. Few people have real memories of events that occurred before their 3rd birthday. For those memories that are actually remembered, the mind stores only elements of the actual events and reconstruct full memories later when the memories are recalled. The act of recalling memories can change them so that at the time of the next recall, they are somewhat modified. Recovered Memory Therapy (RMT) was quite popular during the 1980s and 1990s but is now rarely used. It is a therapeutic technique based on the belief that traumatic memories of abuse -- typically sexual abuse experienced during childhood -- can be forgotten or repressed and later recovered during therapy. No matter how memories were recalled, they were believed to be accurate. Many suggestive techniques were used to reconstruct what appeared to be memories; however they are generally unrelated to real events from the past. Our questions:Is ‘Recovered Memory Therapy' a pseudo-science that perverts real memory by tainting it with the subject's belief system(s)?Do you think in the 80s and 90s when this therapy was widely used that the therapist influenced their subjects? In this episode, we first talk about how memories can be interfered with, and refer to the misinformation effect. We also discuss if people rewrite their memories when they recall them. Trauma has a deep impact on the lives of survivors. It's associated with mental and physical health problems, including substance abuse, and neuroscience is showing that a traumatic memory is quite different from a normal memory. Mental health services now realise that early trauma must be taken into account as an essential part of recovery from mental distress.

In the second part of the newest saga of reviewing documentaries, the boys take on The Keepers, the Netflix pop-u-mentary series about the rape and abuse of students, the murder of two nuns, and the apparently settled case of recovered memory (despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, but let's not let that get in the way of a successful documentary's narrative!). It's mostly a lot of ranting against the filmmaker by von Sternberg and attempts to make the analogy great again by Burgess (which is now the podcast's first catchphrase, apart from Serbian Film references), but it's an enjoyable lark!
