Considered one of the most prolific writers working in modern fiction, USA Today bestselling writer, Dean Wesley Smith has published over two hundred novels in forty years, and hundreds and hundreds of short stories across many genres. At the moment he produces novels in five major series, including the time travel Thunder Mountain novels set in the old west, the galaxy-spanning Seeders Universe series, the urban fantasy Ghost of a Chance series, and the superhero series starring Poker Boy, and the highly acclaimed puzzle mystery series The Cold Poker Gang. His monthly magazine called Smith's Monthly, consisting of only his own fiction, premiered in October 2013 and each month has over 60,000 words per issue, including a new and original novel every month. During his career, Dean also wrote a couple dozen Star Trek novels, the only two original Men in Black novels, Spider-Man and X-Men novels, plus novels set in gaming and television worlds. Writing with his wife Kristine Kathryn Rusch under the name Kathryn Wesley, they wrote the novel for the NBC miniseries The Tenth Kingdom and other books for Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. He wrote novels under dozens of pen names in the worlds of comic books and movies, including novelizations of almost a dozen films, from The Final Fantasy to Steel to Rundown. Dean also worked as a fiction editor off and on, starting at Pulphouse Publishing, then at VB Tech Journal, then Pocket Books, and now at WMG Publishing where he and Kristine Kathryn Rusch serve as executive editors for the acclaimed Fiction River anthology series. Show notes provided by Jack Adrien How does a rejuvenated science fiction franchise follow arguably the best installment in its long-standing television and movie series? Well, if it's the decades-long Star Trek franchise and following Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan's (Khan's) critical and commercial success, Paramount Pictures greenlit for producer Harve Bennett to write a sequel the day after Khan opened. But how would that work? We watched and mourned Mr. Spock's heroic sacrifice to save the Enterprise and her crew, marking the “death” of not only one of the franchise's most beloved and well-known characters, but also a character that embodies the science fiction genre. And Leonard Nimoy, the actor who brought Mr. Spock to life, had long expressed his frustration with the weight of playing the character, most notably in his first autobiography released in 1975, I Am Not Spock. With Khan, did Paramount grant Nimoy's wish? Whereas Star Trek: The Motion Picture rebooted the franchise for cinema audiences, Khan reintroduced a memorable antagonist from one of the series' first season episodes. Although the third film in the Star Trek film franchise,Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (Search) marked the second part of what many consider a three-film story arc – beginning with Khan released in 1982 and ending with 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Voyage) – that shows how the original series characters accept aging in the franchise's world building. Within this loose narrative trilogy, Captain James T. Kirk met his son, David Marcus – neither of whom had met before – and Kirk witnessed the death of his best friend, Mr. Spock, in Khan. And in a startling reversal, rogue Klingons kill Kirk's son and Mr. Spock is “resurrected” in Search. Memorably, to save his life and those of his crew, Kirk must kill the franchise's most central character in Search: The USS Enterpriseitself. Nestled as the story-arc's midpoint, Search allowed the Star Trek franchise to mature and move beyond its television series roots. Released three years before the successor television series in the franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Search delivers on poignant story arcs for its characters, particularly William Shatner's portrayal of Kirk. As Paramount released more films over the years, the fandom (i.e., Trekkies) settled on an “Odd-Even Rule” (i.e., the even-numbered films are often considered better than the odd-numbered ones). But that shorthand has often overlooked and underrated Search's significance to the franchise. Foremost, Search marks Leonard Nimoy's motion picture directorial debut, deftly balancing action, humor, and tension. Nimoy later garnered acclaim for his direction of Voyage and Three Men and a Baby, respectively. Further, Search formally introduced the grammar, syntax, andvocabulary for the Klingon language. The constructed language gained greater notoriety when its creator, Marc Okrand, and Pocket Books published The Klingon Dictionary in 1985. Moreover, Nimoy cast Christopher Llyod against type as the primary Klingon antagonist, Commander Kruge, and whose standout performance paved the way for his later iconic role as Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy. Lastly, Kirk's destruction of the USS Enterprise over the Genesis planet in Search would later introduce the USS Enterprise-A in Voyage, the replacement for the destroyedstarship, creating a legacy of distinguishing successor ships of the line with the next letter in the alphabet that has endured in the franchise. Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Joe, John, Josh, and Jack as we go behind the scenes and discus Search's history, our impressions when we saw the movie, and where the movie fits in the Star Trek film franchise today. Moreover, we discuss alternative castings and storylines, and does Search disprove the Odd-Even Rule. Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.

Meredith Duran has an unlikely publishing story: at her sister's encouragement, she submitted her first manuscript, Duke of Shadows, to the Gather.com first chapters contest, and won first prize: Duke of Shadows would be published by Pocket Books. Duran followed up with Bound by Your Touch and Written on Your Skin, two late Victorian novels starring friends: Viscount Sanburne, the happy-go-lucky rake who uses his dissipation to conceal something much darker, and Phineas Granville, a spy-turned-earl who is drawn back into the game by a beautiful woman he's indebted to. Duran's one of Chels's favorite historical romance authors, and she's also the author Reformed Rakes listeners have most requested get a standalone episode. Shibble nerds over Dungeons & Dragons as we discuss the franchise's most prosperous days: the Satanic Panic! But beware, as we are dissecting D&D through the lens of 80s mass hysteria we will also be talking about triggering topics such as child abuse, teenage suicide and crazed conservative right-wingers! Shibble breaks down the history of Satanic Panic through the stories which inspired books like Remembering Satan, The Dungeon Master and even Michelle Remembers, while I attempt to crap all over regressive hypnosis yet again, by tying the alien abduction craze back to satanic ritual abuse hysteria. Shibble also shakes his head in disappointment as I try to make the case that D&D truly is magic, and may be used for divination! Hey, maybe we trigger some conspiracy nuts along the way! =============== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Shibble from Uncle Monster's Spooky Time Fright Hour for purging all of his D&D and Satanic Panic obsessions upon us, allowing me to profit off his knowledge without doing a sliver of research myself!

Graduate of Lehman College in New York City, Behr studied Mass Communications and Theater, and was offered a playwriting scholarship at Brandeis University. Instead, Behr elected to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in writing comedies for television and film. However, instead of comedies, Behr made his mark in television dramas. His first job as a television writer was for the James Garner television series Bret Maverick (1981), and he later served as story editor for the series Jessica Novak (1981). Behr's writer/producer credits also include the series Fame (1982), Once a Hero (1987) and The Bronx Zoo (1987). Behr's relationship with Star Trek began as a producer for Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) during its third season. At the end of the season, Behr left the series to pursue screenwriting. Three of the feature films written during this period are currently in development. Behr returned to Star Trek in 1993 as a supervising producer for the pilot of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and became a co-executive producer in the second season . His diverse talents and experiences as a writer led him to the position of executive producer late in the third season. Behr played a key role in the development of the popular alien race, the Ferengi. He wrote the book "The Rules of Acquisition", which is a humorous compilation of the guiding tenets of Ferengi culture. Behr also co-wrote a collection of short stories and fables based on the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition entitled "Legends of the Ferengi", which was published by Pocket Books. After DS9 ended its seven-season run in 1999, Behr went on to produce other television fare such as the science fiction drama Now and Again (1999) and the Jason Alexander comedy Bob Patterson (2001). Late one night in November of 1975 a man came home from work and parked his car at the end of his driveway, which looped around the back of his house. After sitting in his seat for a minute, he turned his car off, and then stepped outside into the cold night air. From there, he walked toward the side of his house where there was a path that led around to his front door, but before he could reach his front door, he heard a voice call out to him from somewhere off to his right. The man stopped and stared into the darkness, wondering if he really had just heard a voice at all, but then as he stared, the voice called his name again. Confused, the man walked to the fence at the edge of his property, and looked over it to see who was there. Little did this man know, he had just walked into a trap. For 100s more stories like this one, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @MrBallen....Note about content:We do not do any original reporting. In March of 1990, a detective in Florida, who was investigating a missing person case, decided to search for them in a forested area near a busy highway. The area had been searched before, but this detective just had a hunch that something could still be in there. And so he stepped into the thick rows of trees and began walking deeper and deeper into the forest. Eventually he reached a point where it was so thick in front of him, he didn't know if he could physically get through. But he decided he would just keep on going a little bit further. And after only a few minutes, he reached a clearing, and in the middle of it was something huge. Vascular Origin Stories is a podcast series that explores the fun and engaging stories that shaped vascular surgery. Today's episode will be the first part of a multi-episode series exploring how the young battalion surgeons serving in MASH units in the Korean war pioneered wartime vascular repair. This episode introduces the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), as well as some of the real-life stories from the surgeons unknowingly changing the field of medicine, which inspired the hit movie and TV series M*A*S*H. We'll look at what caused arterial repair to be removed from the army surgical handbook after WWI and how changing medical education helped create the environment for ingenuity in the MASH units. In part 2, we'll explore in detail the individual stories of adversity, courage, and perseverance that led to the re-introduction of arterial repair in the military. Our Trailblazer episodes continue this week with Jude Deveraux, an early historical romance author who broke several publishing barriers over her more than forty year career. In this episode, we talk about her journey through the Wild West of romance in the late 1970s, her publishing career at Avon Books, Pocket Books and Ballantine. We talk about the judgement and misogyny that circles romance, the buying power of readers, and the way the genre and bookselling has changed. We also talk about her writing process, and what it's like to be Jude Deveraux. This one is a real joy for us, as we wouldn't be the readers or writers we are without Jude Deveraux. This episode is sponsored by Avon Books, publisher of Joanna Shupe's The Bride Goes Rogue, and Amazon's Kindle Vella, publisher of Eloisa James's The Seduction Series. Our next read along is Virginia Henley's The Dragon and the Jewel, a deep cut from Sarah's childhood. Check your content warnings and remember this one is from 1991, so we don't even know, honestly. We're flying without a net here. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo or your local indie.Show NotesLike many of our trailblazers, Jude Deveraux's first brush with romance was Kathleen E Woodiwiss's The Flame & the Flower. The publisher with “the prettiest covers” in the 1970s she references was Woodiwiss's publisher, Avon Books. Books of Jude Deveraux's that we talk about in depth include: The Enchanted Land (her debut novel), A Knight in Shining Armor (early time-travel romance), Sweet Liar, The Providence Falls series with Tara Sheets, The Girl from Summer Hill, Twin of Ice (the twins!!), and “The Matchmakers” a short story in The Invitation collection (featuring Cale & the angel sex scene). The Four Js were Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught.People mentioned in the episode: Kate Duffy, editor at Silhouette Books and Pocket Books; Joan Schulhafer, publicist at Pocket Books; Richard Gallen, publisher & packager; Ronald Busch, publisher of Pocket Books; Robert Gottlieb, agent; Linda Marrow, editor at Ballantine/Doubleday/Dell; Kathryn Falk, publisher of Romantic Times Magazine; Kathe Robin, reviewer at Romantic Times Magazine.
Freelance editor, anthologist, and reviewer Paula Guran was senior editor for Prime Books for seven years. Previously, she edited the Juno fantasy imprint from its small press inception through its incarnation as an imprint of Pocket Books. In addition to the annual Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror series, she's edited many other anthologies. The supernatural, surreal, and the all-too real. Tales of the dark have always fascinated us, and in The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror: Volume Two (October 19, PYR), editor Paula Guran has selected 30 modern authors (20 of those women) to carry on the disquieting traditions of the past while inventing imaginative new ways to unsettle us. Volume two begins with a COVID-19-based tale by Victor LaValle, who was commissioned (along with 28 others) by the New York Times to “write new short stories inspired by the moment.” Along with LaVelle's story Recognition, this year's collection includes six stories set in a dystopian future, three tales around the human genetic code, and horrific tales of the supernatural. “It wasn't until after I started assembling this volume that I realized how often homes, houses, and other domiciles played important roles in many of the selected stories,” said Guran. “Considering most of us have been home more than usual lately, this is… interesting.”

EPISODE 212I Joining us today is bestselling romance author, Roxanne St. Claire. Rocki's latest book, (https://amzn.to/2RUDWrX), releases September 25, 2020, the day after this episode airs. If you like romance and fun and dogs, you'll love this book! Rocki started her career in traditional publishing, first with Pocket Books at Simon & Schuster, and then also writing for Harlequin, Random House, and Grand Central Publishing. When she was offered her biggest contract, though, there was a clause she was unwilling to accept, so she said no. Going indie was the best business risk she's ever taken. She has more creative freedom than ever before, more joy, and more money. She works hard - it is a full-time job - but it's the best thing she's ever done as a writer. Rocki shares her experiences so you can decide if indie publishing might be right for you. You can find out more about Rocki and all of her books at her website, https://www.facebook.com/groups/roxannestclairereaders (https://www.facebook.com/groups/roxannestclairereaders).

My first guests on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Alan Robertson and his dad, Phil Robertson. Phil Robertson and Al Robertson Alan Robertson is the oldest son of The Duck Commander Phil Robertson. He grew up hunting and fishing and helped build the foundation of the family business in the '70s and '80s. Back in the day, he and Phil would travel around Louisiana and Arkansas selling duck calls to stores right out of their truck. The sales pitch back then was the same as it is today: “These calls are the best 'cause they sound just like a duck!” Alan returned to the family business after serving in full-time ministry for more than 25 years. Alan plays a vital role in the family's commitment to spreading the gospel of Christ through their love of hunting and the great outdoors. Al recently started a production company called Restoration Productions with his cousin Zach Dasher, and produce Phil's show, In The Woods with Phil on CRTV. The only Robertson without a beard, he calls himself a “Jacob” in a family of “Esaus.” Al and his wife, Lisa, are parents of two grown daughters who are married to bearded men. Born and raised in Vivian, Louisiana, Phil Robertson came from a large family with 7 children and little money. Because of the location of his family home in a rural setting near Shreveport, and the aforementioned scarcity of money, hunting became an important part of his formative years. As a high-school athlete, Phil earned All-State rankings in football, baseball, and track, which afforded him the opportunity to attend Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship. There, Phil played first-string quarterback – ahead of Terry Bradshaw, who later went on to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers team to 4 Super Bowl championships. Phil said, "Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks." After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and a Master's in Education, Phil spent several years teaching in Louisiana schools. Acclaimed as an excellent teacher by his students, Phil came to the conclusion that his time and talents would be better spent in the woods. Phil and his family, which by this time included his wife, Kay, and four boys – Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jeptha – began a quest to turn his passion for hunting and fishing into a livelihood. Phil has authored two books, Happy, Happy Happy about his life story, and Unphiltered about his philosophy on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and is working on a third. As previously mentioned, Phil has a new internet television on CRTV called "In The Woods With Phil." The show features Phil's wisdom and his practical insights on how our country and culture can improve. Go to CRTV.comducks to subscribe to Phil's show, "In The Woods with Phil." Listen as Al, Phil, and I talk about their books, the culture, what the man who has no cell phone and doesn't use the internet is doing on his own internet television show, and what REALLY is the key to a happy, happy, happy life! ******************* My guest in the second half hour will be Joy Overbeck. Joy Overbeck is a Colorado journalist and author who has written on lifestyle and relationship topics for Redbook, Reader's Digest, TV Guide, Woman's Day, Health, and other national and regional magazines. She's also written two humor books published by Pocket Books, Simon&Schuster. She describes herself as a radical conservative God fan who has delighted for the last several years in annoying libs with columns at Townhall.com, The Washington Times, The Daily Caller, American Thinker, and elsewhere. Other favorite forms of recreation include riding her Rocky Mountain mare, Gypsy, out into the wide open spaces of beautiful Colorado, skiing Vail, and enjoying her friends and her golden tabby, Tigger. Joy and I will be covering her recent column, "How the #WalkAway Campaign is Drowning the Blue Wave Democrats" As Joy writes in the article: The #WalkAway campaign is now over 100,000 strong in just a few weeks. These are former liberals who have discovered, as its founder Brandon Straka says in his video (below), “the Democratic Party's greatest and most insidious lie:” That without them, you are nothing. As Straka puts it, “They will insist that you are a victim doomed to exist within a system that is rigged against you…that you are a victim of systematic oppression…that you are a victim of your circumstances, and no amount of hard work or motivational action will ever allow you to overcome your victimhood or the privilege of those around you.” Joy's article has garnered over 13K shares on Facebook for good reason: people are amazed to hear the stories of liberals who have seen the light and fled from the rabid intolerance and vitriol of The Left! Don't miss a minute as Joy and I discuss this #WalkAway movement that's sweeping the country! My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Kate Anderson. Kate Anderson serves as legal counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom, where she is a key member of the Center for Conscience Initiatives. Since joining ADF in 2015, Anderson has focused on protecting the conscience rights of individuals being unjustly compelled to forfeit their beliefs under threat of government retaliation, heavy fines, or other punishment. In Country Mill Farms v. City of East Lansing, she has defended the constitutionally protected right of a farmer to express his beliefs without fear of losing his license to serve customers at the city's farmer's market. In 303 Creative v. Elenis and Amy Lynn Photography Studio v. City of Madison, Anderson has counseled creative professionals in pre-enforcement challenges to laws that would force them to promote messages contradicting their core beliefs. Her litigation practice has also included Privacy Matters v. United States Department of Education, one of several ADF challenges to the Obama-era federal mandate that denied students, parents, and community members the fundamental right to bodily privacy. Prior to joining ADF, Anderson was an associate attorney with Ellis, Li & McKinstry, PLLC, in Seattle, where she litigated both civil and criminal cases. She served on the trial team in Stormans v. Wiesman, a pivotal case in defense of freedom of conscience for pharmacists in the state of Washington. She also advised churches, religious organizations, and private schools on employment, church discipline, statutory and regulatory compliance, and other issues. Anderson obtained her law degree magna cum laude in 2009 from Gonzaga University School of Law, where she served on the Gonzaga Law Review. She also completed the ADF leadership development program to become a Blackstone Fellow. Anderson is admitted to the state bars of Arizona and Washington, the U.S. Supreme Court, and several federal district and appellate courts. Kate and I will be talking about two young artists Joanna Duka and Breanna Koski are fighting for their rights in the Arizona Court of Appeals. The current ordinance forces the artists to create content for same-sex weddings, which is against their religion. The longer they stand by their religion, the longer they extend their time behind bars. Their hearing today will determine whether the women can go back to their business or towards a jail cell. Read about the case, "What Happens in a State Court Doesn't Stay in a State Court. Filing a lawsuit was not on Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka's checklist when they began making preparations to open their own custom art studio, Brush & Nib. But facing jail time for running that business according to their faith was not really something they anticipated, either. You know when I have an ADF lawyer "in the house" we'll be talking precedent-setting law that should be important to all conservatives and Christians! ********************** My guest in the sceond half hour will be Joy Overbeck. Joy Overbeck is a Colorado journalist and author who has written on lifestyle and relationship topics for Redbook, Reader's Digest, TV Guide, Woman's Day, Health, and other national and regional magazines. Joy and I will be covering her recent column, "Are Teachers More Dangerous Than Mass Murderers?" as well as other current news topics. Joy is a woman after my own heart and has a passion for our nation and turning our culture away from Progressive socialism. Yes she has spunk! Which means you won't want to miss this conversation! Jeff Trek welcomes Star Trek legend Larry Nemecek to the program. Larry is an American Star Trek author, actor, editor, archivist, consultant, interviewer and producer. His annual “TNG” concordance guides caught the eye of Star Trek's TV writers and Pocket Books and he became the author of Star Trek The Next Generation Companion. For seven years he spent time creating, editing and leading the Star Trek Communicator licensed magazine. Most fun are consulting gigs with the Star Trek: The Experience museum and rides … exhibits like the Star Trek World Tour, Star Trek: Federation Science, Star Trek: The Tour … and DVD bonus feature projects on and off camera. A story sale to Star Trek Voyager that became the episode “Prophecy”. brand-new remastered audio series, "TREKLAND: On Speaker," launched in 2012 with a surprise debut at the Las Vegas Convention. His first film is now in the works, a documenatary that had to be made—"The Con of Wrath," the true story of the 1982 Houston "meltdown to miracle" featuring the original Star Trek cast. On all his projects, Larry brings a wide-ranging but unique and down-to-earth perspective—including the sharing of tales as a guest and pundit at conventions across the country or the likes of Canada, Germany, England, France, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic....and of course my favorite thing that I really enjoy about this guy is the fact that he also plays Doctor Lenard Bones McCoy in the fan film production Star Trek Continues. So whip out your communicators and beam on board.
