Dr. McFillin analyzes the manipulation tactics employed by the pharmaceutical industry to alter our perceptions of depression and mental health. He breaks down the notorious Zoloft "blob" commercial from 2001, uncovering its powerful role in shaping public understanding of depression and how we treat it. Many of these psychological manipulation techniques are still in use today. Without awareness of these strategies, we risk falling prey to well-documented methods of mind control. The first step in this resistance isn't anger or action—it's awareness. Open your eyes. See the manipulation for what it is. Because once you can spot the strings of the puppet masters, you can begin to cut them. Your mind is your own. On Episode 150 of the Radically Genuine Podcast I interview Ethan Watters an investigative journalist and author. He is most widely known for his book “Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche” published in 2010. He has also appeared on a number of media outlets such as Good Morning America, Talk of the Nation, and CNN and written articles published in The New York Times Magazine, Spin, Details, Mother Jones, Glamour, GQ, Esquire, and the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine. Does our western conceptualization of mental illness actually create more harm than good? We explore how the export of Western mental health concepts is changing the nature of mental illness globally, examining the impact of Western narratives on depression, schizophrenia and PTSD in non-Western societies. The conversation critiques the assumption that Western therapy is universally applicable and discusses the medicalization of emotional distress in Western cultures.Chapters00:00 The Globalization of Mental Health09:28 The Cultural Construction of Mental Illness18:40 Altering Cultural Responses to Suffering25:52 The Importance of Cultural Context in Mental Health39:32 The Impact of Western Narratives on Trauma43:16 The Limitations of Western Notions of Healing45:30 The Medicalization of Emotional Distress in Western Societies47:48 Challenging the Immediate Intervention Paradigm53:19 Culture's Influence on Mental Health and Individual Choice RADICALLY GENUINE PODCASTDr. Roger McFillin / Radically Genuine WebsiteYouTube @RadicallyGenuineDr. Roger McFillin (@DrMcFillin) / XSubstack | Radically Genuine | Dr. Roger McFillinInstagram @radicallygenuineContact Radically GenuineConscious Clinician CollectivePLEASE SUPPORT OUR PARTNERS15% Off Pure Spectrum CBD (Code: RadicallyGenuine)10% off Lovetuner click here—-----------FREE DOWNLOAD! Chapter 1 What's Crazy Like Us Book by Ethan Watters"Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche" is a book written by Ethan Watters. In this book, Watters explores the cultural impact of exporting Western ideas about mental illness and treatment to other countries. He argues that the globalization of American psychological concepts and treatment methods has cultural and societal consequences, often disregarding the influence of local beliefs, values, and practices related to mental health. Watters challenges the notion of a universal understanding and experience of mental illness, pointing out the dangers of imposing Western perspectives on mental health in diverse cultural contexts. In "Crazy Like Us," Watters specifically examines the influence of American psychology and psychiatric interventions following natural disasters, such as the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka, the 2008 earthquake in China, and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He sheds light on how Western concepts of mental health and trauma care can shape and alter local understanding, exacerbating or overlooking certain issues while imposing Western treatment models. The book serves as a critique of the homogenization of mental health treatment practices and a call for cultural sensitivity and awareness in addressing mental health globally. Watters argues that recovering societies should be empowered to preserve their unique cultural approaches to mental health and support systems.Chapter 2 Is Crazy Like Us Book A Good Book"Crazy Like Us" by Ethan Watters is generally well-regarded as a thought-provoking and insightful book. It explores how Western cultural ideas about mental illness have been exported and imposed on other countries, potentially influencing their understanding and treatment of mental health. It challenges some preconceived notions about mental illness and raises important questions about cultural diversity and the globalization of Western norms. Ultimately, whether it is a good book or not depends on your personal interests and perspectives.Chapter 3 Crazy Like Us Book by Ethan Watters Summary"Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche" is a book written by Ethan Watters. It explores the impact of Western cultural narratives and the spread of Western mental health concepts on other cultures around the world. The book argues that Western notions of mental illness and the way they are treated have become increasingly globalized, influencing and sometimes eclipsing native practices and beliefs about mental health. Watters focuses on four case studies, each representing a different region or country and examining how Western psychological theories and treatments have been adopted. The first case study takes place in Japan and explores the rise of eating disorders and self-harm among young Japanese women, which Watters argues can be attributed to the influence of Western media and an increasingly individualistic society. Watters also looks at the medicalization of mental health in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami, demonstrating how Western approaches overshadowed traditional healing practices and created cultural conflict. The next case study takes place in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where Watters examines the introduction of Western models of depression treatment. He argues that this approach ignored the cultural context and spiritual beliefs of the local population, ultimately leading to limited effectiveness. Finally, Watters discusses the exportation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to other countries, particularly Cambodia, exploring how Western trauma narratives were not always relevant or helpful for those experiencing different cultural traumas.Throughout the book, Watters challenges...
Yesterday's anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States has us turning to the legacy of America's post-9/11 wars. As veterans reflect on their time in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as the country contemplates the impact of these wars on the morale of the US military and America's standing in the world, literature offers a powerful way to make meaning from war's experience. From Ernest Hemingway to Kurt Vonnegut and J.D. Salinger, the author-soldier has long been a fixture in American literature. In this episode of None Of The Above, the Eurasia Group Foundation's Mark Hannah is joined by two of his favorite contemporary novelists, veterans Elliot Ackerman and Phil Klay. Books, they argue, are more than a medium to unpack trauma and untangle the web of emotions war provokes: war stories have implications for the battles we have yet to fight. Elliot Ackerman is a veteran of the US Marine Corps who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Elliot is the author of several novels, including Halcyon (2023) and 2034 (2021), which he co-wrote with Admiral James Stavridis. Phil Klay is a veteran of the US Marine Corps who served in Iraq. Phil is the author of the novels Redeployment (2014) and Missionaries (2020). His most recent book is Uncertain Ground: Citizenship in the Age of Endless, Invisible War (2022). Michael J. Diamond's book Ruptures in the American Psyche: Containing Destructive Populism in Perilous Times (Phoenix Publishing, 2022) describes Trumpism: the strong allegiance to former President Donald Trump that is in evidence among a sizable portion of the US population. How did Trump come to be elected in 2016, and who supported him during his presidential tenure - and why? How is it that he continues to hold cult-like status, exerting a strong influence not only on many individuals but also on numerous elected officials, despite his defeat in 2020? Why does his character continue to be an object of fascination even among anti-Trumpists, and why will Trumpism continue to play a major role in the American sociopolitical landscape even now he has left the presidential stage? Diamond ponders these questions through the lenses of American history and culture, political theory, social phenomena, group dynamics, and psychoanalysis. In exploring the relationship between large-group regression, cultism, destructive populism, delusional thinking, conspiratorial beliefs, authoritarianism, and leadership characterised by narcissism and paranoia, psychoanalytic ideas pertaining to group dynamics, malignant regression, and leadership are brought into play. Prominent psychoanalytic thinkers who have addressed these topics and whose work usefully contributes to the discussion include Bion, Freud, Fromm, Bollas, Kernberg, Lifton, Rosenfeld, and Volkan, as well as Bleger, Jaques, and several more recent Kleinian/Bionian-influenced analysts. Most important, the book makes use of these understandings to reestablish a sufficiently containing frame that strengthens the body politics' nonpathological elements in order to come to grips with these disturbing factors. Whatever their political beliefs, psychoanalysts in the US and worldwide will find much to think about in reading this book's application of their discipline to today's sociopolitical environment. In addition, the book's insights extend beyond arguments targeting a strictly psychoanalytic audience in order to reach social and political thinkers, as well as activists, who are deeply concerned about dangers threatening the very foundations of democracy in the US and worldwide. And finally, the thoughtful lay person will appreciate the accessibility to all these fields that the book provides, and will come away with a much deeper understanding of just what motivates us to take a stand for or against a given political figure. In short, conceptual tools are provided that lead to greater understanding as well as effective strategies and tactics for containment of destructive forces - largely unconscious ones - that imperil our society. Karyne Messina is a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and am on the medical staff of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. In short, conceptual tools are provided that lead to greater understanding as well as effective strategies and tactics for containment of destructive forces - largely unconscious ones - that imperil our society. On today's episode we are sitting down with Peter Robinson to discuss Long Covid and the internet's role in spreading it. Recommendations: Better Call Saul Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche by Ethan Watters Hystories by Elaine Showalter
President Joe Biden says his approval ratings are so low because of the COVID pandemic - which he promised to shut down. In an interview with CBS' 60 Minutes yesterday, the President said "the pandemic is over" - but it's also the reason why Americans are not supportive of him: Scott Pelley: But your approval rating in the country is well below 50%. And I wonder why you think that is. President Joe Biden: This is a really difficult time. We're at an inflection point in the history of this country. We're gonna make decisions, and we're making decisions now, that are gonna determine what we're gonna look like the next ten years from now. I think you'd agree that the impact on the psyche of the American people as a consequence of the pandemic is profound. Think of how that has changed everything. You know, people's attitudes about themselves, their families, about the state of the nation, about the state of their communities. And so there's a lot of uncertainty out there, a great deal of uncertainty. And we lost a million people. A million people to COVID. When I got in office, when I-- I got elected, only 2 million people had been vaccinated. I got 220 million-- m-- my point is it takes time. We were left in a very difficult situation. it's been a very difficult time. Very difficult. The President also said he is still physically and mentally able to do the job - despite his age. "Oh, it's focused. I'd say it's-- I think it's-- I-- I haven't-- look, I have trouble even mentioning, even saying to myself, my own head, the number of years. I no more think of myself as being as old as I am than fly," he said. "I mean, it's just not-- I haven't-- observed anything in terms of-- there's not things I don't do now that I did before, whether it's physical, or mental, or anything else." This week on Sinica, Kaiser and Jeremy discuss mental health in China with George Hu, a Shanghai-based clinical psychologist who serves as president of the Shanghai International Mental Health Association and leads the United Family Mental Health Network. George describes how American ideas of psychiatry and psychology have shaped the way Chinese mental health professionals understand mental wellness and mental distress, resulting in the importation of approaches to diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders that may not always be the best fit with China's cultural, sociological, and historical realities.5:14: – Trying to assess the scale of mental illness in China9:45 – How mental health is diagnosed and classified in China19:00 – Mental health and the extraordinary competitiveness of life in China28:09 – The growing focus on the intersection between culture and mental health in China37:21 – Issues faced by American students in China 46:17 – Mental health and the COVID-19 pandemic50:42 – Bicultural therapyA transcript of this interview is available on SupChina.com.Recommendations:Jeremy: Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake George: Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche by Ethan WattersKaiser: Awakening from Dukkha from the Inner Mongolian band Nine TreasuresSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Keith Ablow, Fox News and Newsmax contributor and founder of ChangetoPower.com, speaks with John Catsimatidis and guest hosts Lidia Curanaj and Governor David Paterson to discuss cancel culture, media negativity, vaccine deniers and the damage done to the American Psyche by the pandemic.
In this extensive interview, American Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Egan takes us through her career as a writer and explains why she considers fiction an invaluable document of our time: “By creating a kind of artefact of the dream-life of our culture, I am preserving it for those who want to understand it from a later point.” Jennifer Egan was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark in June 2019.

Al Sharpton (AKA The black man's pimp) Calls For A 'Season of Disobedience,' But Is That Helpful For America? Why is it that a Democrat who was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential election with previous ethics violations continues to cause conflict in America? April 23, 2009 - Is fined $285,000 by the FEC, alleging he received hundreds of thousands of dollars in private funds. It is later found that his National Action Network gave hundreds of thousands of dollars towards his campaign that should have been covered by his election committee. June 4, 2020 - Sharpton announces that he's organizing a March on Washington in late August to mark the 57th anniversary of the historic demonstration for civil rights as protests over the death of George Floyd sweep the nation. Sharpton says the event will be led by the families of black people who have died at the hands of police officers, including Floyd's family. The problem for Democrats is that Al Sharpton is, as Mr. Trump put it on Twitter, “a con man.” And not just a con man: Mr. Sharpton is an ambulance-chasing, anti-Semitic, anti-white race hustler. His history of offensive statements is longer than the current American presidents. And Mr. Sharpton's worst sin — his blatant incitement to violence during the Crown Heights riots of 1991 — leaves no doubt that he is not a leader, as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described him, who has spent his years “pushing for justice in the teachings of Dr. King.” Sharpton became embroiled in the Tawana Brawley case — a case that would haunt him for years. Brawley, an African American teenager, claimed that she was raped by a group of white men — some of whom were allegedly police officers. The case was later dismissed by a grand jury, which reportedly concluded that the teenager had made up the story. But this came after months of media frenzy around the case, largely encouraged by Sharpton. He was even sued by the district attorney working the case for making slanderous remarks. Sharpton was found guilty and fined for his comments. This is a quote: I was fed up, and this is when I shouted at Kimber, "How dare you come here and ask the people for money!" Charging toward the front, I saw Sharpton jump up and take to the podium — the head-to-head exchange began. Counting $100 dollar bills one at a time totaling $1,000, Sharpton challenged me to put my money where my mouth was. "I was once a street preacher like you," he said. "Put up or shut up!" Whatever the original purpose for the money, Sharpton changed gears and told a startled audience that the money raised would be used to build a memorial for those who were slain. I called Kimber and Sharpton a pimp several times. Sharpton is a symbol of a systemic problem within the inner-city church leadership in the North End of Hartford. We don't need a memorial with the deceased victims' names etched in stone — another grave marker. The pain from the families who lost loved ones due to gun violence cannot be replaced by a statue of wasted dollars. Marcus Mosiah Jarvis is pastor at Christ the Cornerstone Praise and Worship Tabernacle in Hartford How is it that such people rise to the top of the food chain in the leadership ranks of the Democrat Party? Isn't inciting a riot a crime? We know a season is 90-days, or three months, but do we really need over 3-months of protests in America, isn't the American Psyche getting protest fatigue? Is this all the left-side of the political spectrum has anymore? Jeremiah Wright-Al Sharpton these alleged men of God is not teaching and preaching the word of God they are teaching and preaching the word of men hate and racism. Besides Al Sharpton other democrat troublemakers are calling for protests, riots, and even hinting at the need for a Civil War. In fact, Michael Moore is promoting the concept of "100-days of resistance, starting with Donald Trump's inauguration," while giving an interview for Salon (dot) com. Didn't we just get over the BLM - Black Lives Matter protests and riots partially paid for by political operative Billionaire George Soros? Do we really need any more civil unrest in America? The Salon story stated, "He [Michael Moore] will start by attending the women's march, which he described as a 'bold message' to remind the president-elect that women's rights are human rights." Wait, am I missing something here? Wasn't it Barack Obama who bowed to the King of Saud in Saudi Arabia and gave a speech in Cairo, for which he received a Nobel Peace Prize, about what a great way of life Islam is, a culture that puts women in the back seat, unless there are land minds and then they walk in front of the men. The left suddenly, and in their infinite hypocrisy, finds a soft spot in their hearts for women? And, yes, their candidate was defeated, not because she was a woman, rather due to personal character flaws which have followed her, her entire life. The right doesn't have anything against women, the right has something against lies, hypocrisy, fake economic numbers, political correctness, and the disruptors of society busy looting, rioting, and burning out store fronts. Look, here is the thing, we are finally retiring a Community Protest Organizer turn President yes Barack Obama, who sent race-relations in America back 40-years and we hardly need any more of this nonsense. The left lost this election, not due to the Russians hacking the DNC revealing their true colors, but because the left, had left the middle class high-and-dry with bad policies one-after-another. Wasn't its Obama himself that told the American People, "elections have consequences" as he rammed his socialist policies down our throats? Now that the left didn't get their way - they want to riot and protest? Using the death of George Floyd as a platform to brew hate shame on you Al Sharpton and shame on you Democrats. I guess we are in half during a pandemic, so these paid protesters can riot. Covid-19 do not seem as important now. One of Donald Trump's campaign promises was that he was going to bring "Law and order back to America" and in part, the Trump Campaign won on that message, yet the left wants to continue this misbehavior, protests and criminal behavior - and yes, it is a Class-C Felony to incite a riot. When will the left stop acting out and start acting like adults? Think on this, and as always Be Great, Be Strong in your faith: Trust In GOD, Don't Hesitate!

Bill and Paul discuss the topic on everyone's mind, the coronavirus and social distancing, through the lens of social polarization and isolation that already so characterized American, Western, and modern society in general. One should not assume that “social distancing” breaks connections. Paul and Bill got together to talk about the subject and found that it connects to many other things, at least as an intellectual exercise. But also with many emotional, spiritual and sociological implications. Bill said that, upon first hearing about “social distancing,” he instinctively connected it to a phenomenon he ponders and writes about a lot—the phenomenon of social polarization. (He writes about it in his OnWord blog, and in 2018 he wrote a book (When Headlines Hurt: Do We Have a Prayer?) reflecting on Pope Francis’ concerns about the polarizing effects of contemporary news and digital information flows. Social distancing, apart from the validity of scientific claims that it is needed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, looked to Bill like a physical, societal manifestation of the polarization trend which leads to the isolation, exclusion and defamation of people. It encourages them toward confirmation bias because they choose to hear only the opinions that back up their pre-conceived notions. Paul said social distancing also seems to tie into America’s infatuation with the “loner.” He recalled the self-imposed isolation discussed in Robert D. Putnam’s 2000 book, Bowling Alone. Both participants in the conversation connected the concept of loner with many ideas: the modern assumption that being a loner need not carry high risks, like it once did, because of the protection offered by government; the omnipresent promise among colleges that they will prepare their students to become “leaders” as opposed to followers; the observation by Alexis de Tocqueville (in Democracy in America) that Americans of the 1800s were instinctively individualists; and the more recent observation that we live in an age of celebrity when everybody wants to famous, even in relatively impotent, purposeless ways. This latter notion was discussed by Catholic philosopher Peter Kreeft in an episode of EWTN’s “The Philosopher’s Bench.” It is especially sad that, at a time when Pope Francis points out that the Church has many valuable responses to the tendency toward social polarization and isolation, “social distancing” has prompted an end to Mass attendance. As remarked in a blog post by David Seitz, OFS, one of Bill’s favorite Franciscan commentators, the loss of civic solidarity and civil conversation is a profound kind of penance. In this episode of Views on Vue the panel interviews core team member Rahul Kadyan. They discuss his various contributions to the vue ecosystem and his recent conference, Awesome Conf. The panel starts by asking Rahul about rollup-plugin-vue. Rollup is a bundle like webpack. When Rahul got his start in Vue he wanted to use rollup so he created rollup-plugin-vue. This caught the eye of the core team and he received an invite to join the core team. Rahul spends most of his time in Vue working with compilers, the panel asks him about template compilation. He explains when template compilation happens and how knowing how it works can help you create better templates. Rahul shares all the awesome things that can be done with templates. The topic moves to stand alone and runtime only builds in Vue. Rahul explains how each of these builds. The panel considers possible use cases for both builds. The stand alone build being larger is good for only about 10% of cases. The runtime only build works well in cases where you already have a build process. On top of Vue being smaller, it can also make your website run faster. Rahul recently gave a talk about single file components or SFC in Vue. He explains the easiest ways to use SFC and what it is capable of. The panel compares SFC to an ordinary JavaScript file. Rahul lists the benefits of using and SFC over a regular JavaScript file, one being you get the best out of the box render function in Vue. The panel asks about the work Rahul is doing at work, building a design language system. He explains the difference between a design system and a design language system. A design language system defines what every interaction will look like, it has a larger scope than a regular design system. He explains how useful it is and what they use it for. Some of his other contributions to the Vue ecosystem include the vs code language plugin he is currently working on. In this project, he is exploring ways to find all your global components so that way he can provide completions for all the components. Also in this plugin, he is exploring using a compiler to get all the information about each component. He is hoping to include editing capabilities which gets the panel really excited. Rahul has a repo called vue-lazy-hydration, which allows you to hydrate components as you need them while doing server-side rendering. He explains what he means by hydration and how by using async hydration the long delay that normally comes with server-side rendering is no longer a problem. He is currently creating demos for the repo. The first Awesome Conf was held recently and Rahul shares his experience setting it up. Awesome Conf is different than other conferences in that the speakers were actually the attendees. Rahul explains how all this came about. At first, they were going for a normal conference but didn’t get enough speakers, so they reached out to the attendees and told them they would have to provide the talks. They provided topics for the attendees to choose from and chose 15 talks from the ones submitted. With such a small conference they let everyone bring a plus one. The conference was a success and everyone had a great time. Rahul is looking forward to doing another Awesome Conf this time for design. He is still working out the details but he wants a diverse group that can really learn from each other. The panel considers what they would do if they were asked to speak. They share their fears of speaking and Rahul shares some of the advice he gave to the speakers as he helped them prepare for their talks. To finish the episode, Chris Fritz asks Rahul why he chooses to work with compilation. Rahul shares his story about getting into computer science and eventually compilation. This week on The Authentic Woman, Guest Host Susan Singer will interview author and journalist, Pythia Peay. Peay writes about spirituality, psychology, and the American psyche. Over the past thirty years, she has covered such topics as the soul of the city, prayer circles, near death experiences, the rebirth of “feminine spirituality,” post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, political psychology, and has conducted interviews with scores of pioneering thinkers from Clarissa Pinkola Estes to Robert Jay Lifton. Peay’s work over the years has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Utne Magazine, Washingtonian, Religion News Service, The Washington Post, La Repubblica, The Cleveland Plain Dealer and past publications such as George, New Woman and Common Boundary. Currently she writes for The Huffington Post, Psychology Today, and her own blog, America on the Couch. She has received awards for her work from The American Association of University Women and Women in the Media. Susan Singer is a rabble-rousing artist, activist, writer, and teacher whose primary desire is to make the world a better place by ending violence against women, helping people find their personal path, creating beauty, and spreading creativity. She uses her artwork to reach deep within herself to find her core and to channel her vision of Spirit to inspire, delight, (and perhaps sometimes provoke!) others. The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the female experience in America. The show delves deeply into the worlds of women writers, artists, celebrities, and community leaders and offers listeners food for thought on ways to better themselves and the world around them.
