Ever wondered why a significant number of Americans identify as Christian but have a limited grasp of core Christian doctrines? We kick off this episode exploring this intriguing paradox, setting the stage for a deeper dive into how faith intertwines with everyday challenges. We bring you a riveting real estate story from the Ledges community, where a high-end, yet dated property posed unique selling challenges. From initial overpricing to the emotional journey of a seller looking to relocate closer to family, this narrative uncovers the rich human experiences behind market dynamics.Through personal anecdotes and reflective conversations, we examine the essence of discipleship and biblical living, particularly the delicate balance between God's sovereignty and human free will. Selling a house becomes a metaphor for life's trials, teaching us about faith and patience in divine timing. We emphasize the importance of community and accountability, underscoring how loving correction and mutual support among believers can shape a more authentic Christian life. Our discussion broadens to tackle the often-avoided topics of religion and politics, examining the historical and contemporary impact of beliefs on individual freedoms and societal norms. From the foundational perspectives of the founding fathers on virtue and society, to the erosion of Christian influence in modern America, this episode doesn't shy away from the big questions. We address the significant discrepancy between professed Christian identity and adherence to core biblical truths, stressing the necessity of genuine Christian relationships and community. Concluding with a heartfelt story of a pastor's move from Wyoming to Red Mesa, we explore themes of faith, maturity, and the pursuit of a set-apart Christian life. An Estonian oil company, Enefit, recently abandoned its plans to mine oil shale on federal land in the Uinta Basin and lost the authority to use its water rights for fossil fuel production. It's a huge win for environmentalists who were fighting the proposal — the company was hoping to produce 50,000 barrels of synthetic oil daily and use about 11,000 acre feet of water per year from the Green River. And later in the newscast, our radio partners report on a new solar plant in Red Mesa and breakthroughs in geothermal energy in southwestern Utah. // Plus, the Weekly News Reel! Sophia Fisher of The Times-Independent discusses concerns over downtown's aesthetic conditions, preparing for the upcoming eclipse, a rise in Spanish Valley's short-term rentals and an 84-year old ‘legendary' skydiver. Alison Harford of the Moab Sun News explores rabies and bats after two tested positive at Arches National Park. Plus, she discusses the summer reuse arts residency and the upcoming Red Rock Arts Festival. // Show Notes: https://www.kzmu.org/abandoned-oil-shale-lease-is-a-win-for-colorado-river-basin-according-to-environmentalists/

The Navajo Nation police department wants to triple its number of officers in the next five years. That's meant to help communities like those in southern Utah where residents report high crime and few resources. Today on the news, we speak with officers from the Navajo Nation and Utah about challenges and solutions to policing in this rural area of our state. Plus, federal officials ordered limits last week on how much water is released by Glen Canyon Dam in order to maintain sufficient levels to generate hydropower. But conservationists warn time is running out to develop long-term solutions to the West's dwindling water supplies. // Photo: The Navajo Nation police's Shiprock District covers towns and communities in southern Utah like Aneth, Montezuma Creek and Red Mesa. Renewable energy projects like solar are expanding on the Navajo Nation, an important step for the reservation to create sustainable power. The latest project is a solar farm on the Utah side of the Navajo Nation. But just because it's renewable, doesn't mean it's without controversy. Today on the news, a report on fight over land in the area. // And later, the Weekly News Reel, where we check in with reporters on their latest local coverage. Sophia Fisher of The Times-Independent discusses plans to transform a mobile home park taking shape, two small fires last weekend in central Moab and unaffiliated candidacy in Grand County. Alison Harford of the Moab Sun News talks about researchers studying native seeds for landscape restoration, Gallery Moab showcasing local artists and Seekhaven-related events for sexual assault awareness month. // Show Notes // Photo: Protestors gather in Red Mesa at a Navajo Tribal Utility Authority job fair for the Red Mesa Tapaha Solar Generation Plant on October 26, 2021. The Navajo Nation has roughly 250 police officers for some 27,000 square miles – an area slightly larger than West Virginia. Jurisdictional constraints for county police also mean that many on the reservation cannot depend on a speedy response to crime. In November 2021, Utah's Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Task Force heard tribal residents' concerns over a lack of law enforcement. Today on the news, we visit areas within the Navajo Nation in southern Utah to hear about the issue and what residents want. Plus, amid concerns about the unbalanced ratio of short-term to long-term rentals in the county, Grand's commissioners denied a rezone request related to a proposed luxury campground. // Show Notes // Photo: Marilyn Holly is the vice president of the Red Mesa chapter house in the Navajo Nation. NIGHT SHADOWS OVER SANDY CREEK: SOUTHWEST TEXAS RANCHERS by Jerry Snodgrass At forty-four years old, Steve Barker—a former Army Ranger, professional rodeo roper, steer wrestler, and oilfield roughneck—turns to owning and operating a cattle and horse ranch in Southwest Texas. He is driven by his love of the cowboy life to find peace after his wife and little girl were tragically killed in an automobile accident. His Sandy Creek Ranch, located near the small town of Red Mesa, Texas, is overrun by illegal immigrants coming across the border from Mexico. They destroy his fences, break into his ranch house, and threaten his ranch hands. Steve meets bank vice-president, Jada Tobin, a beautiful blonde-haired widow who owns property across Sandy Creek. Steve and Jada eventually fall in love, and together, along with neighbor ranchers, fight the drug and human smugglers who threaten their livelihood as ranchers. JERRY SNODGRASS was born in Butler, Missouri, in 1938. He was raised and went to school in Indianola, Iowa. He entered the military after graduating from high school in 1957. He successfully fulfilled his dreams of serving in the military and federal service traveling to worldwide exotic locations for over fifty years. Jerry is a Vietnam Veteran and is a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. His passion for romance, mystery, and suspense and the lives of the American cowboy-inspired him to write NIGHT SHADOWS OVER SANDY CREEK. Jerry lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife Rosemary and their little Yorkie, Stormy. https://www.amazon.com/NIGHT-SHADOWS-OVER-SANDY-CREEK-ebook/dp/B075FG1YJ2 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/jersnodgrass.mp3
