Welcome to Season 5, Episode 13! Have you heard of Walter Tin Kit Achiu? He was the first Native Hawaiian and first Asian American to play in the National Football League. Although his career was groundbreaking, he's largely been forgotten over time. In this episode, we talk about his life, his football career, and what he did after he finished playing with the NFL's Dayton Triangles (yes… that was really the name of the American football team he was part of). Nicknamed “Sneeze”, he was a high level athlete all his life and broke barriers on the football field and in the wrestling ring. We begin the episode by talking about some current events (the sad passing of K.W. Lee and the happy green-lighting of the Crazy Rich Asians show on Max). And we end the episode with the recurring segment of What are We Listening To? This time, we talk about the new album Blood on the Silver Screen by singer Sasami as well as the audiobook Homicide and Halo-Halo written by Mia P. Manasala and voice acted by Danice Cabanela. Our guest today is alternative pop polymath SASAMI. The Korean American songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist is a true musical chameleon, seamlessly shifting between heavy metal, industrial, folk ballads, and alt-pop while touring with the likes of Mitski, Soccer Mommy, and Snail Mail. Today, she releases her most pop-focused record yet—her third studio album, Blood on the Silver Screen. In this episode, we chat with SASAMI about stepping into the world of pop and why embracing it was actually the punkest move she could make. We discuss her shift away from classical roots, the contrasting production styles of Jenn Decilveo and Rostam, and whether we'll see her on Australian shores later this year.SASAMI: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Blood on the Silver Screen and find SASAMI on tour here.Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
Sasami is a singer, songwriter and producer who grew up in Los Angeles. But now she's based in Northern California, and as you'll hear in this episode, that's significant. Sasami went to school for classical French horn. She was in the band Cherry Glazerr, and she's had a lot of collaborations with other artists on their projects and her own. Collaboration is at the heart of the song that I talked to her about for this episode. It's called “In Love With A Memory,” and it features Clairo on vocals, and it was co-produced with Grammy-winning producer Rostam. The song is on Sasami's third album, Blood on the Silver Screen, which is out March 2025. Coming up, you'll hear the original voice memos that she recorded for this song back in the fall of 2022. You'll also hear the demo she made in Garageband after that, and then how she and Rostam turned that demo into the final version, a duet with Clairo. For more info, visit songexploder.net/sasami.
We interviewed producer, engineer, and mixer, Chris Coady, back in 2016 for Tape Op issue 113. He has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Future Islands, Beach House, DIIV, The Drums, Porches, Amen Dunes, Sasami, Hand Habits, and countless other artists. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Chris from his studio in Glendale, CA, to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from his formative years in Baltimore, his days at New York City's Quad Studios, and his approach to recording and mixing. Enjoy!
Genre-defying artist SASAMI speaks to Headliner about the making of her latest pop-fuelled record, Blood On The Silver Screen.
As the 80s turns into the 90s, preppy is everywhere. All over the planet. In the United States AND Japan. And sure, preppy sort of morphs into business casual. But it also turns into something else. Ivy starts to go out of style, thanks to the counterculture (with a lot of help from corporate America). But Ivy finds an unlikely savior in a Jewish college dropout from the Bronx. The look of the elite somehow becomes the look for everyone. And as more and more people are taking on Ivy, it only becomes cooler and cooler. Winter - sunday from the 2022 album What Kind of Blue Are You? on Bar/None. Songwriter Samira Winter (who records as Winter) returns with her sophomore full-length, What Kind of Blue Are You?, described as an "emotional excavation of [her] purest self." The new album features guest appearances from artists like Hatchie and Sasami. "“I feel like I've come full circle, making an album that my 22-year-old self who just started Winter would love," she says in a press release. "It's my inner shadow girl, revealing herself in all her brokenness, despair, and beauty.” Winter describes today's Song of the Day as "a fever dream meditation on social media toxicity," a topic she says is "always on my mind and generates a lot of fear and anxiety for me. It's a critique on social media's effect on mental health and contorted beauty standards for women." So where does Ivy begin? The short answer: Princeton University. The long answer is a spiral that takes us from a 1940s Chinese prison camp, to the raucous party culture of1920s London, to the docks of downtown New York City after The War of 1812. SASAMI sits down with Kyle Meredith to tell us her adventures in making the album Squeeze. Those adventures include becoming one with Earthly elements, shrinking herself to fit inside of an acoustic guitar to eventually cover System of a Down's "Toxicity," and inhabiting a river and capturing guitar playing caterpillars. The indie rock artist — who was Consequence's February Artist of the Month — also tells of dancing golden grunions, romantic relationships with seals named May Jascis, and being addicted to licking paint. She tells us all of this from the comfort of the "Sedona of energy fields."
