Wellington Phoenix head coach Mark Rudan has confirmed he won't be returning to the club at the end of the season. As reported last week, The Australian, who has turned the Phoenix around since taking over from Darije Kalezic in May last year, will walk away halfway through his two-year deal - despite the club's best efforts to retain him.Rudan said that making the decision to leave was an extremely difficult one."This has been one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in my career. I came here wanting a project I could sink my teeth into and really make a difference to our sport."I've said it before, this football club is special. There are wonderful people here that make this club what it is. The people of Wellington and New Zealand have truly embraced me. I thank all the supporters, corporate partners and the entire football club on having such great belief in me," Rudan said in a statement.Rudan's future has been the subject of much speculation since the start of this year, as he has struggled with being isolated from his Sydney-based family.Since January, the Phoenix have been trying to put together a package to convince Rudan to stay, driven by chairman Rob Morrison, but they've been unsuccessful.Living closer to his wife and teenage children is believed to be a key driver of Rudan's decision to return to Australia, though the 43-year-old has also been frustrated with the financial resourcing of the club, and has spoken publicly on several occasions about the need for the Welnix ownership group to display more ambition."...as I've made mention previously, family is up most of importance to me. I am a husband and a father first and a football coach second," Rudan said."The past few weeks I have worked closely with the club trying to find a solution but ultimately it was something that could not be resolved."The confirmation of his exit marks the end of a short, but highly successful era. From the first day he walked through the doors Rudan has shaken up the club, from the playing group to the back office staff, bringing confidence and belief back into the organisation, after the Phoenix's reputation, off and on the field, nosedived dramatically during the Kalezic reign. He has helped several players to produce the best football of their careers, especially young Kiwis like Alex Rufer, Louis Fenton, Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace. His methods have also driven striker Roy Krishna to enjoy a stunning season, and former Socceroo David Williams is another who has responded positively to the environment under Rudan. The former Sydney FC captain has engendered a unified, successful playing group, with a positive, attacking style and the recipe has worked. The Phoenix are all but qualified for the finals for just the fifth time in their history, and could surpass their highest regular season points tally (42 in 2014-15).Four more goals in the last three regular season games will also mark a new goals record for the club. The team enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten run from the beginning of December to late January, smashing the previous best streak of six.Such success has brought back the fans, highlighted by more than 23,000 coming to Eden Park in February, a new club high for a non-finals match. However, Rudan's departure means the franchise will be on the search again for a new head coach, and will bring another period of uncertainty and upheaval for the capital team.Since Ernie Merrick's exit in December 2016, Des Buckingham, Kalezic, Chris Greenacre (caretaker) and Rudan have occupied the position.

Mark Rudan on Football, Finals, and Future

Wellington Phoenix coach Mark Rudan has drawn a line in the sand on his future, saying that he won't be in the capital next season unless his family relocate to New Zealand.Rudan also said that he is prepared to take a year off coaching next season, rather than live away from his wife and two sons for another campaign. The speculation over Rudan's position for the 2019-2020 season has dominated football debate in this country since before Christmas. The Australian is only nine months into a two-year deal at the club, but has so far refused to commit to honouring the second year of his deal.He has also been strongly linked with positions at the two new A League expansion clubs (in Melbourne and Sydney). His reluctance to confirm his ongoing presence in Wellington has centred on two factors. The difficulty of living away from his Sydney-based family —which he has regularly said is harder than he had ever imagined it would be — and his personal concerns over the ambition of the owners to invest in the club.Different options have been discussed to alleviate his family situation, but Rudan has decided that only a permanent switch will be feasible."My family is the big one," Rudan told Jason Pine on Radio Sport. "They are first and foremost. I have struggled to live without them. We have had discussion about it, but I've made a decision that my family has to be with me. It's not going to be a come and go situation. It just doesn't work. My boys need me, I need them as well. The club are working hard to try and improve the situation."Rudan has two teenage sons (15 and 12), as well as his wife Sylvia based in Sydney. He has managed to stay on after some away trips, and they have visited this country, but Rudan says that is not enough."If I have to take a year off to be with my family, I'll be with my family," said Rudan. "If I coach here, great, but my family will have to be with me for that to happen."If I coach in Australia, my family will be with me at the end of this season. Whether it is Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane..wherever it is, my family will be with me."When asked if he wants to be at the Phoenix long-term, Rudan gave a convoluted answer."Am I solely focussed on my job? Absolutely," said Rudan."Am I focussed on improving and being the best coach for this football club? Absolutely. Do I want to see the club grow? Yes, I do. Do I want to see it improve? Of course I do. I'm here and I'm going to be working as hard as I can. The plan is to stay here. If I can. I have to get my personal situation sorted out."Rudan added that the foundations are there for future success, even if he was to depart in a few months."There are structures in place, there are pillars there," said Rudan. "If I was to walk away, everyone knows it is a better place than it was."I think it is. Do I want to stay and finish it off? I do. Do I want to win the first piece of silverware for this club? I do. That is what I am driven to do. And talks are ongoing."However, Rudan also discounted talk that he was obliged to stay for next season at least, given the Phoenix had offered him his first professional deal."I'll be forever grateful for [chairman] Rob Morrison for giving me the opportunity to coach this football club," said Rudan. "I've knocked back four [A League] offers in the past....it's not like this is a first offer that has come my way."Rudan's immediate priority is to address a worrying form slump, ahead of Saturday's match against the Central Coast Mariners. The Phoenix have only won once since mid-January, with three draws and three defeats in that span. That's allowed the Newcastle Jets (26 points) to close the gap with the Phoenix (28 points) in the battle for sixth spot, though the New Zealand team has a game in hand.

LISTEN TO ROB MORRISON TALK WITH JASON PINE ABOVEFootball Federation Australia has confirmed the decision to red card Wellington Phoenix defender Ryan Lowry against Perth Glory was wrong.Substitute Ryan Lowry was sent off after the VAR reviewed a tackle where his studs brushed a Glory player's legs following a tackle.Perth then scored an equaliser moments later to deny the Phoenix a second win of the season.Phoenix boss David Dome spoke with A-League boss Greg O'Rourke this morning, who has consulted with his head of referees and admitted the call was incorrect. The Phoenix will now be asking to have the red card rescinded.Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison is calling for Football Federation Australia to be held accountable for the decision.Morrison told Radio Sport's Jason Pine it's not simply a case of censuring the referee involved."We've had issues with the VAR last season and this season and I think we have to look higher up the food chain. The referees have bosses, the referees assessor has a boss. Those are the guys who should be held accountable for this and it is impacting the game," Morrison said."...what you demand from them is consistency and clarity and we don't get that from the refereeing. There needs to accountability and the FFA needs to be held accountable for this and they are not."Morrison had issue for the fact that the Phoenix continue to have referee Adam Kersey in charge of games."We get inexperienced referees. I think there is a clear bias against the Phoenix. The referee last night he goes out, tries to do a job, he doesn't pick which games he gets but he's refed 21 games in four or five years in the A-League. Eight of those games have included the Phoenix. That's not a statistical anomaly it's a statistical bias."Morrison said at some point the FFA have to look at the assignments and 'fairly allocate the referees'."We don't get the experienced referees and it impacts our games."Morrison also said an issue was the lack of funding going into refereeing."The clubs have all demanded that the FFA needs to invest more money into referees. We have some fulltime referees now but you've got to do the same with the assistant referees."Frankly at the moment I don't know why they're called assistant referees because they don't assist the ref. They are linesmen or linespeople and we should go back to calling them that until such time as they do start making decisions."

Behind most bankruptcies is an exhausted CEO. Around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, Rob Morrison, the CEO of New York City retailer Gracious Home was signing and sending bankruptcy documents to his attorneys. They filed for Gracious Home’s (second) bankruptcy in the middle of the night so Rob would have time to break the news to his staff before reporters started calling asking for a comment. On this episode of Rally, a podcast about business leaders facing failure and bouncing back, a retail CEO takes us behind the scenes of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing at a time when thousands of stores were closing around the country. Gracious Home was founded in 1963 by a pair of brothers, who established the brand as a sort of precursor to e-commerce giant Amazon. New Yorkers of a certain age knew, “you could always get it at Gracious Home,” regardless of whether you were looking for a crystal chandelier or a vacuum cleaner bag. The business grew and expanded until after the 2008 financial crisis, when the owners took out a loan to open another store at one of the worst times. Gracious Home filed for bankruptcy protection its first time in 2010. New owners came in, hoping to turn things around. In 2014, they hired Rob, who’d spent his entire career climbing corporate ladders at retail companies. He began as its Chief Operating Officer. In 2016, Gracious Home’s CEO left suddenly and Rob was thrust into his first ever CEO post. Weeks later, Rob took Gracious Home through its second bankruptcy filing. Rob tells the story of what happens when a retailer files for bankruptcy, including: closing stores, firing hundreds of employees and coming up with a plan to revive a brand beloved by many. Business reporter and Rally host Macaela J. Bennett has spent a year collecting these stories of hardship and missteps in people’s careers to share with listeners inspiring examples of overcoming obstacles. We chat with her via Skype as our first live guest. We also have our first Story From The Street as Sean O'Connor shares some observations about the new Adelaide Oval from up atop the stands. In early 2012, the lobby group Friends of Science in Medicine wrote to the vice-chancellors of Australia's universities asking them not to allow the establishment of unscientific alternative medicine courses. Established only five months ago, Friends of Science in Medicine now boasts more than 500 members. They are currently campaigning "to reverse the current trend which sees government-funded tertiary institutions offering courses in the health care sciences that are not underpinned by  sound scientific evidence". Shayne and I caught up with Dr. Rob Morrison, a co-founder and Vice President of Friends of Science in Medicine. Rob has won two Eureka Prizes, was Senior Australian of the Year for South Australia in 2008 and is a Professorial Fellow at Flinders University. Also he co-hosted The Curiosity Show for 18 years.
