On this episode of Talking Terror, your crew is gearing up to head out to the Mojave desert! No, they're not going there to shoot a music video. Instead, they'll be camping out and chatting about the Demonic Dean's film pick of the week. From 2022, The Outwaters directed by Robbie Banfitch. Stay scared people, stay scared!
Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much, much more. In this episode, we're thrilled to welcome the innovative, resourceful, and determined filmmaker Robbie Banfitch. Robbie recently made an impressive debut with his first feature, 'The Outwaters.' 'The Outwaters' is a unique blend of survival horror and found footage with a touch of quantum horror. The film takes its audience on a terrifying journey into the heart of the Mojave Desert and straight to hell from there. Here, four travelers set up camp, initially to shoot a music video, but soon find themselves plunged into a harrowing, reality-bending nightmare. What begins as unexplained sounds, odd vibrations, and strange animal behavior soon morphs into a terrifying ordeal that challenges the very nature of their reality. Not only did Robbie direct this film, but he also wrote it, starred in it, and financed it while working full-time for Greenpeace. All of this was achieved on a meager budget of just $7,000, proving that creativity and drive can outshine even the tightest of budgets. The film premiered at the New Jersey Film Festival in 2022 and is now streaming on Screambox. Without further ado, please enjoy this conversation with Robbie Banfitch. Reflecting on our conversation with Robbie Banfitch, only one key takeaway stands out: if you want to be a filmmaker, there is simply no excuse not to make your movie. Robbie's journey with 'The Outwaters' showcases this in its purest form. With a limited budget, he managed to create a feature film that didn't feel restricted by its financial constraints but instead used them to inform its very intentional style and narrative. Horror is not just the most profitable genre—it's also the most adaptable. We've witnessed an explosion of creativity, with filmmakers exploiting simple technology to craft stories through Zoom calls, screen shares, and beyond. You're truly only limited by your imagination. Our guests consistently reiterate this advice which is: look at what you have and just start filming. We're in an era where excuses are obsolete. And Robbie is a shining example of this spirit. He's not only made Outwaters but has gone on to shoot two more features. Regardless of what he has access to, he's a relentless creative force who actualizes his projects, offering a pretty serious lesson for all of us. Robbie's journey reminds us to seize any and all opportunities and to start creating, regardless of our circumstances. As Robbie demonstrated, all it takes is a little ingenuity, tenacity, and a budget as low as $7,000. As I reflect on this conversation, it's clear that it's time I take this advice to heart myself, and I hope you listeners do too. Until next time, stay spooky and keep creating. Join us as we traverse the arid, alien landscape of 'The Outwaters,' Robbie Banfitch's found-footage horror that charts a group of friends' descent into terror in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Despite its ambitious intention and appealing premise, we found it lacking in narrative coherence, intentionality, and verisimilitude. Ryan was underwhelmed, generously allotting it a "stream" for its earnest attempt, and for the sake of staying up on the latest in independent horror. Tim had a much stronger reaction, labeling it a stern "avoid." Prepare to lose yourself in the shifting sands of our latest episode as we attempt to uncover 'The Outwaters,' a film that, in our estimation, also lost its way. Under the umbrella of horror, you find many different sub-genres that make up this diverse film genre. From monster movies to slasher films, from the supernatural to giallo, horror has many faces. In 1999, we saw the emergence of a sub-genre that wasn't exactly new but certainly had never made such a splash. When three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary, audiences had no idea what they were in store for. As the iconic poster ominously revealed, their footage was found. “The Blair Witch Project” was not only a box office smash, it will also the beginning of a new wave of found footage horror. A sub-genre that allows a fertile proving ground for independent filmmakers not only for its budget friendly framework (usually handheld camera work, no need for elaborate effects or name stars, typically common locations) but also because with the right hook, the found footage sub-genre has the potential to feel more real and immersive then the high gloss films made in Hollywood. Though there have been plenty of great found footage films since “Blair Witch” (here's looking at you “Paranormal Activity”, “REC” and “Lake Mungo” to name a few), few have got under my skin as much as the new found footage film “The Outwaters”. The films creator is Robbie Banfitch. When a group of four friends head out into the Mojave Desert on a camping expedition, we know it's probably not going to go well for them. However, Robbie Banfitch isn't content to give us the usual redneck cannibals or ghouls in the hills… oh no. He's planning to drag us kicking and screaming into the abyss. This film takes no prisoners. It's steeped in dread and offers no hand-holding. Robbie delves into what makes the found footage sub-genre so unique, why “The Blair Witch Project” remains as relevant as ever, working with what you have on location and why he's not a fan of catering to audience expectation. Charge your camcorder batteries and grab your flashlight as we explore the terrifying world of “The Outwaters” with filmmaker Robbie Banfitch. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Found footage films in horror go back many years with the controversial movie “Cannibal Holocaust” credited as one of the first to come to prominence. It wasn't until 1999 when “The Blair Witch Project” landed in theaters that found footage horror films truly exploded in popularity with audiences even going as far as questioning if what they were watching might actually be real and not a work of fiction. It was from that movie that up and coming filmmaker Robbie Banfitch was inspired to make his own found footage film. His concept actually started with the title — a word that he made up yet sounded like a great name for movie. From there, Banfitch started contextualizing an idea for a film that would take him to the deepest reaches of the Mojave desert where he would be joined by three of his real life friends for a journey into madness. Banfitch didn't write a script for the movie but instead went scene by scene as he directed his rag-tag group of actors by pushing them into his ultimate vision for a terrifying road trip that spiraled into a fever dream filled with sand, sun and blood. Today I'm joined by Robbie Banfitch, the writer/director behind The Outwaters. The film takes viewers off the beaten path and into their own nightmares. The film plays out over three memory cards found in a sun-drenched section of the Mojave Desert. The footage within is that of a foursome, who set out to make a music video while camping, led by a charismatic LA filmmaker. Their trip starts out uneventful, though their peace is occasionally disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. Then one night everything changes, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support
Written and directed by Robbie Banfitch, THE OUTWATERS tells the story of four young men and women who embark on a shoot in the Mojave Desert. Told entirely through ‘three memory cards' discovered after their disappearance, OUTWATERS follows this foursome as they begin to create a music video for their friend in the wilderness. However, even though their trip begins as intended, soon they find themselves troubled by disturbing sounds and (un)natural phenomenon. Building in intensity over time, the disturbances eventually erupt in chaos. In this 1on1, we speak to Banfitch about playing in the dark, the found footage genre and what scares him.
THE OUTWATERS is most easily described as 'sensory overload,' a found footage horror flick whose second half pummels with almost complete darkness, sans a single flashlight acting as an iris revealing fucked-up shit. The sound work shrieks, warbles, layers in multiple voices: a pulse-pounding array of noise that mimics what it's like to feel someone else's panic attacks. The movie starts as four friends venturing into the desert to make a music video, but when an unknown axed assailant attacks their campsite, the movie essentially explodes, sending filmmaker Robbie (Robbie Banfitch in one of those moves where the characters are named after the actors) into a naked odyssey through galactic? interdimensional? hell. Reviews of the Velma season finale, Magic Mike's Last Dance, the Titanic 25th anniversary rerelease and indie horror film Consecration. Plus interviews with The Outwaters filmmaker Robbie Banfitch and Swallowed writer/director Carter Smith.
This week we discuss Gabriel Bier Gislason's queer Jewish horror film ATTACHMENT (2:51), a smartly-told tale about a Danish woman (Josephine Park) who falls for a Jewish woman (Ellie Kendrick) but discovers some disturbing things after traveling back to London with her. Next, Megan and Dave cover MAGIC MIKE'S LAST DANCE (21: 47), Steven Soderbergh's mediocre final chapter in the MAGIC MIKE series. Then we review a movie that two of us have a very visceral reaction to — THE OUTWATERS (39:16), Robbie Banfitch's found footage horror film about a group of friends who get terrorized in the Mojave desert. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we watch TO LESLIE to find out what all the Oscar fuss is about.
E.L. King interviews special guests Angela Basolis and Michelle May, stars of the Cosmic Horror film The Outwaters (2022), and its producer Beau J. Genot from 5100 Films. Screen the film exclusively on Screambox following its theatrical release. Written and directed by Robbie Banfitch, the film follows four friends on an excursion to the Mojave Desert to shoot a music video that turns terrifying while camping when they start to experience unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. The foursome is sent on a mind-bending trip through terror. You can #SlayAwayWithUs for new episodes on Fridays as we chat about lore, gore, the inspiration behind your favorite horror films, and every kill in between with special guests. This week, we sit down to chat with Luke Boyce, the co-writer, director and producer of Revealer, which will premiere on Shudder on June 23rd. We discuss his evangelical upbringing, his relationship to horror, finding his niche in Joe Bob's Monstervision and then catching up as an adult. We also talk about Revealer, a film that pulls some bits and pieces from his upbringing and runs with it in a subversive way. Then we go back to 1972 to discuss the Christian propaganda film A Thief in the Night, which presents the idea that the Rapture can AND WILL happen at any moment. Nonsensical plotting is helped along by some really nice bits of humorous editing as vets fight cobras, doctors fight planes to arrive with an antidote, women wonder whether they're Christian enough and little girls are terrified they'll be left behind. Along the way, we talk about how the film posits the UN as bad and barcodes are filled with demons. Songs about trampling kids, bad versus good Christians, automaton cult members and so much more unfold...Side note: if you listened to our episode with Robbie Banfitch about The Changeling, this acts as a surprising follow-up for Terry's traumatic first girlfriend. This week we sit down with writer/director Robbie Banfitch and things get chaotic. After discussing his early history with horror, we talk about his found footage horror film The Outwaters, which just played at Unnamed Footage Festival along its festival journey and things get weird. Britney Spears' Crossroads comes up. Robbie also shares the theme to another film he has in post called Tinsman Road and then we dig into The Changeling, where things get even more chaotic. Grindr hookups gone awry, spooky encounters with ghosts and Terry's suppressed memories of a high school girlfriend all come out in an episode that's about The Changeling but also not about The Changeling. Just hold on and enjoy the ride!Links:You can listen to The Outwaters playlist on Spotify.
