Here's a short teaser of our Patreon-exclusive podcast series where we will be examining the cinema of Steven Soderbergh. On our main show we are going through his more underrated works, while on our Patreon we are talking about Soderbergh's most prominent movies. This is it! We have come to the end of our Soderbergh project and on this occasion we are discussing the last movie he directed thus far, Magic Mike's Last Dance. Over the course of this chat you will hear us talk about the mindboggling allure of the series, how it works or doesn't work as a rom-com and if Channing Tatum still has the chops. We also talk about what drives Soderbergh to make these movies, whether he still wants to continue making escapist entertainment and whether Magic Mike and Magic Steve are in fact the same person and those movies are a reflection of Hollywood. Subscribe to our patreon at patreon.com/uncutgemspod (3$/month) and support us by gaining access to other shows, such as other tie-ins, themed retrospectives and director marathons! This week on The Finger Guns Podcast our good friend Ethan Lawrence returns to talk video games, Boat Story and all the weeks biggest news! Well, there isn't much, but we do our best including talking about Sony returning to court to settle whether or not they've overcharging UK PSN owners. If so, we all get money! Huzzah! We'll see what happens. Elsewhere Bloober Team have come out to say that everything is just fine with the development of Silent Hill 2 thank you very much so you can bloody stop bothering them with your ridiculous Tweets. Oh, and the PlayStation Portal has sold out worldwide and demand is high. How on earth did that happen? We talk out the success of the Remote Play system and actually learn what the hell the thing does with some surprising revelations. In Game of the Week Miles has been checking out Last Train Home, Josh has been riding through the glen with Gangs of Sherwood whilst Ethan has been thoroughly enjoying the cracking little multiplayer darling KarmaZoo. Oh, and Rossko fell asleep playing Immortals of Aveum. Greg was right. Don't tell him. And in recommendations we talk Funko Pops, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, M3GAN, Ethan's own Magic Mike's Last Dance and Rossko goes to bat for Taskmaster - why aren't more people watching it I ask you? Well, he does. And he's definitely not writing this description in the first person. Hey if you like our podcast why not leave us a review?! You can do it on Apple where you can also spread the love and on Spotify with their star ratings. Everything helps and we'd really appreciate it. If you've been asking “Why aren't more podcasts talking about Magic Mike's Last Dance and Girl Scouts?” you've come to the right place. Shall we??   What do the critics have to say about Magic Mike? Here's Shirley Li at The Atlantic, Emma Specter at Vogue, A.O. Scott at the NYT, Richard Brody at The New Yorker, Bob Mondello at NPR, and Kyle Smith at the Wall Street Journal.    Channing's look right now! Specifically this Met Gala pic and this Variety cover! He and Zoë Kravitz share a stylist, Andrew Mukamal (who was featured on Kell on Earth—see also: this Interview interview with Kelly Cutrone).     If you're into the business side of Magic Mike, check out WSJ's story “For Magic Mike, Channing Tatum Looked for Strippers Moms Could Love.” As for Channing's other creative projects: Sparkella, Born & Bred Vodka (more from BonApp), and the much-hyped romance novel he's writing with Roxane Gay. (Unrelated but also totally related, Tessa Bailey's reverse-harem romance Happenstance.)     Oh, Girl Scouts, preparing girls to meet the world with courage, confidence, and character since 1912! We love the logo redesign by Collins, and if you need a cookie source, buy them from Troop 6000, a first-of-its-kind program designed to serve families living in temporary housing in the New York City shelter system, or from trans girls around the country.    Another scouting org we love: Radical Monarchs, which creates opportunities for girls and  gender-expansive youth of color—this doc is great.   Share your Magic Mike reviews with us at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, or @athingortwohq—or join our Geneva! Steven Soderbergh's MAGIC MIKE'S LAST DANCE ends the Channing Tatum male-stripper trilogy in a much different place than it began, centered on the unlikely romance between Tatum's Mike and a wealthy woman, played by Salma Hayek, who's interested in nurturing his talents. And while we're all in agreement that's to the detriment of the movie, it does make for a useful comparison point with 1951's AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. After working through our frustrations with LAST DANCE with the help once again of Chicago critic Deirdre Crimmins, we compare them to our frustrations with AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, as well as the nuances of each film's unbalanced power dynamics and extended climactic dance sequences.  Note: due to a technical failure during recording, some of the audio on this week's episode is suboptimal. We apologize for the aural inconvenience. While both of the films in this week's paring center on American men living and dancing abroad, the main thing linking the new MAGIC MIKE'S LAST DANCE to 1951's AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is the relationships those men have with wealthy women who wish to be their patrons, and perhaps a bit more. Each relationship and the problems that come with them are distinct to the social customs of the time in which the film was made, a fact that's difficult to ignore when viewing AN AMERICAN IN PARIS today. But for every clunky regressive beat in this Gershwin trunk musical, there's another that rings true, so we're joined this week by Chicago film critic Deirdre Crimmins to consider the limits of Gene Kelly's charm, and the limits of our tolerance for 17-minute dream ballets. Plus, our recent discussion of the long takes in CHILDREN OF MEN prompts an appropriately extended conversation on the subject in Feedback. Note: due to a technical failure during recording, some of the audio on this week's episode is suboptimal. We apologize for the aural inconvenience. Chris Hedges is the guest on this special February 2023 fundraising episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, bestselling author, and social critic. His two most recent books are Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison and The Greatest Evil is War. ***Your generosity and support help to sustain the podcast and to keep it free, not behind a paywall and available to all listeners.*** Chris Hedges reflects on the lessons he learned during his long career as a journalist about the “business” that is the news business, how the “truth” is manufactured, why it pays very well to be a careerist who does not care about confronting Power, and the ways that the limits of the approved public discourse are shaped to serve the interests of the rich and the powerful. He also offers counsel and advice to Chauncey DeVega about enduring difficult times and navigating the personal cost to one's physical, mental, and emotional health that comes from being a serious journalist who is committed to telling uncomfortable and unpopular truths in dangerous times. Chris Hedges also shares his worries about how Russia's war against Ukraine, and America and NATO's response to it, could potentially spiral out of control into a wider war and even worse disaster. Given all of the recent excitement about “UFOs” and an “alien invasion” of the United States (meaning balloons and/or drones) these last few days and weeks, there are two special bonus segments on this episode featuring professional skeptic and author Jason Colavito. The first segment is from 2021 where Jason Colavito explains why today's America is so sick with conspiracy theories and other anti-truth beliefs. He also outlines how right-wing extremists are using the public's interest in ancient aliens, UFOs, and other conspiracy theories to recruit new members (especially insecure white men) online. The second segment is from 2014 where Jason discusses a wide-range of topics including the ancient aliens hypothesis, why white supremacists are obsessed with UFOs, the faux rigor and "scientific" approaches used by the fringe history community, and the case of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who were supposedly kidnapped by extraterrestrials in the 1960s. And on this episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega shares a very special Valentine's Day review of the new movie Magic Mike's Last Dance. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? (Big surprise.)   First up, it's M Night Shyamalan's latest thriller/horror, Knock at the Cabin. Is this top- or bottom-tier Shyamalan? Or is it maybe something else entirely? And is this another of those episodes in which Wayne's hatred of horror gets called into question?   Then Channing Tatum returns for a final dance, and Wayne is all up in that, especially when an age-defying Salma Hayek is added to the mix. Here are the timestamps for each film: "Magic Mike's Last Dance" (2:20): Grierson and Leitch analyze the trailer for the new movie in the "Magic Mike" franchise, which promises to be the final installment. They discuss the film's casting choices, plot details, and whether or not the series has overstayed its welcome. "Sharper" (18:40): The hosts review the new Apple TV+ movie starring Julianne Moore as a con artist. They analyze the film's performances, cinematography, and themes, while also comparing it to other heist movies like "Ocean's Eleven." "Your Place or Mine" (35:10): Grierson and Leitch discuss the upcoming romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. They speculate on the film's plot, predict whether it will be a hit or a flop, and debate whether or not romantic comedies are making a comeback. The pickings are slim on Super Bowl Weekend, but we're here to steer you in the right direction on Breakfast All Day if you're looking for a different kind of entertainment. Christy and Alonso review "Magic Mike's Last Dance," which finds Channing Tatum taking the stage one final time at Salma Hayek Pinault's request. We differ on the movie but agree that the dance numbers are spectacular. We also review the extremely bland rom-com "Your Place or Mine," starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, on Netflix. In news, we have a lengthy discussion about songwriting legend Burt Bacharach, who died this week at 94, but somehow forgot to mention that he wrote the theme to the 1958 horror movie "The Blob," this week's opening song.
