I'm usually funnier, but I think I was (literally) passing a kidney stone this episode. Leno's black guy. Mike Tyson fought Jake Paul. (More like FAKE Paul) UFC and USA. Miller's Crossing. (I bet you saw it a long time ago, and should watch it again) The Heretic. “Mondays, amirite?”

How To LA is kicking off a new 10-part series we're calling Revival House. We are going to take you inside these spaces — the vintage spots and some newer ones — to explore their past and their present…and help you connect with some indie theaters in YOUR neighborhoods. Independent movie theaters are having a moment. Many just turned — or are turning — 100 years old and several have reopened after extensive remodels. This matters because movie history is LOS ANGELES history. Some of these older venues can tell us a lot about the early days of Hollywood and this city. But what's cool is that they continue to create spaces for community, to come together and watch a film on the big screen. So today we're kicking off a new 10-part series we're calling Revival House. CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence and racist themes. The film critic and author Adam Nayman returns to the show for a deep dive into Michael Cimino's 1985 pulp crime thriller Year of the Dragon, starring Mickey Rourke, John Lone and introducing the fashion model Ariane Koizumi as the female lead. Year of the Dragon was Cimino's attempt to reassert himself as an important (and commercially viable) American filmmaker after his post-Deer Hunter fall from grace in the wake of the disastrous Heaven's Gate. Rourke plays Captain Stanley White, a highly-decorated Polish-American cop (and Vietnam veteran) transferred to New York's Chinatown precinct who pursues an increasingly unhinged personal war against the young and ambitious new leader of the Triads, Joey Tai (Lone), using an ambitious Asian news reporter to do it, leading to an escalating bloodbath. MGM/UA had to add a disclaimer to the film after the release in the wake of protests and legal threats from the Chinese-American community set off by the rabble-rousing screenplay by Cimino and Oliver Stone (on the precipice of his own directing career) Adam and I discuss Year of the Dragon as a Problematic Fave: an insanely detailed example of screen artifice (including a hyper-realistic fake New York Chinatown built at Dino DeLaurentiis' studio lot in North Carolina that even fooled Stanley Kubrick) with movie star performances and spectacular filmmaking clashing against chaotic emotional (and racist) outbursts and WTF moments that mark this film as a secret highlight of eighties American cinema, influential not only on Kubrick but also Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson and Michael Mann. This week, we are discussing our epically good time we had upon our return to the New Beverly Cinema! This time around, it was a hyper-kinetic Kung Fu double feature of ‘A Book of Heroes' (1986) and ‘Kickboxer's Tears' (1992). The first- a balls to the wall, zany, Taiwanese action comedy with some of the craziest and impressive fight scenes you've ever seen! The second- A Hong Kong martial arts melodrama dealing with the shady world of underground boxing, forbidden love, and bloody revenge! With both film featuring the legendary Yukarki Oshima, and ‘Kickboxer's Tears' being led by genre favorite Moon Lee, it was a “girls with guns” double dose that left the entire theater cheering, gasping, and wincing in pain! Listen in as we discuss both movies, are experience at the New Beverly and hanging out with our friends Juan, Aaron, and former podcast guest Tiger Sheu! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!

Paul Williams, the director (not the songwriter or the rock critic or the architect…) shares excerpts and outtakes from his memoir “Harvard, Hollywood, Hitmen & Holy Men” currently available as part of the Screen Classics collection from the University Press Of Kentucky. Williams is the director of “The November Men” which World is Wrong listeners will already be familiar with, as well as films like “Out Of It” (1969) and “The Revolutionary” (1970) both starring a young Jon Voight. Williams, with his production partner Edward Pressman, was a producer of films like Brian DePalma's “Sisters” & “The Phantom Of The Paradise” as well as Terrence Malick's “Badlands”. Beyond the movies, Paul rode the many of the movements of 1960's, 70's & 80's, both political and cultural, with characters as varied as Julie Christie and Huey P. Newton, Fidel Castro and most of the “important” directors associated with New Hollywood If you're interested in the story of New Hollywood, Paul's memoir fills in some major gaps. And if you're too lazy to read the book, this podcast will give you a taste of what you're missing. EPISODE SIX - MEISNER DILGOPaul's experiences with Buddhist master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche are a pre-cursor to his immersion in the Sanford Mesiner acting technique in a class led by Jon Voight and David Proval that featured some pretty impressive participants. Also in this episode: We announce screenings of Paul Williams' films in NYC at The Roxy Cinema during the last week of March and in Los Angeles at The New Beverly Cinema on April 18th & 19th.Find all of our episodes at www.theworldiswrongpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram @theworldiswrongpodcast Follow us on Twitter @worldiswrongpodFollow us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKE5tmbr-I_hLe_W9pUqXagFind all things Andras Jones at https://previouslyyours.com/ The World Is Wrong theme song written, produced and performed by Andras JonesCheck out: The Radio8Ball Show hosted by Andras JonesSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There has been this many people sick on Thanksgiving since the original Thanksgiving. (Scalloped potatoes?) Seeing The Getaway at New Beverly Cinema, and all the complaints observations that come with it. The Paul Newman/Jo Woodward doc on HBO, and obnoxious Hollywood people. The culmination of a month long mini-bender, and...the Jew Broad. (Gasp!) "Wednesday" on Netflix. Stand up? Slow down!

Los Angeles-based film writer Zach Vasquez comes on the show to discuss John Frankenheimer's sordid 1986 crime melodrama 52 Pick-Up, one of the only legit good movies made by Cannon Films, a slept-on eighties classic. With a screenplay by Elmore Leonard adapted from his 1974 novel, 52 Pick-Up was not well-received upon release but time has been extremely kind to this shocking and grimy thriller about a wealthy businessman (Roy Scheider) who becomes the target of a blackmail plot, and has to use his wits to outsmart a trio of sadistic creeps from the porn world who keep upping the ante to horrifying levels. Zach and I also talk about that brief period where Cannon Films tried to make prestigious arthouse/grindhouse fare, the greatness of Frankenheimer, the film's engagement with the sleazy reality of Los Angeles in the eighties, it's influence on the other great Elmore Leonard LA lowlife crime drama Jackie Brown, and how 52 Pick-Up contains not one but two unforgettable movie villains, Clarence Williams III and John Glover. Follow Zach Vasquez on Twitter. Zach's new piece about Fellini, for Crooked Marquee A nice appreciation of the movie from the New Beverly Cinema blog. Trailer for 52 Pick-Up (Frankenheimer, 1986)

The host of the podcast Increment Vice (which takes a look at Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice one scene at a time), host Jen Johans chats with her friend about his obsession with "toxic masculinity in need of redemption" plotlines, devotion to L.A. topography on film, and notorious hatred of writing.Wrapping up the first round of her Missouri Boys Trio, which began with their pals Jordan Harper and Jed Ayres (both of whom get some major shout-outs in this episode), for Jen, it was an absolute delight to break down movies with Travis and ask him to program a fantasy quadruple feature at the New Beverly Cinema.A nearly hour-long episode that flies right by - pull up a seat, maybe pour yourself some Johnnie Walker, and settle in for a fittingly Breathless chat you can listen to here or wherever you get your podcasts.Originally Posted on Patreon (7/6/20) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/39034809Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

We open our perfect 10th episode by drinking whisky and discussing self-discovery. Then we lower the bar by talking Batman and even casting our own Batman movie based on our good friend Tyler’s criteria (5:34), delve into the filmography of Jack Black (13:30), talk about shit we’ve seen since last time - highlights include: stand-up comedy flicks, Jim Jarmush zombie flicks, and Will Smith-less Men in Black flicks (17:12), cover James Bond, the news, and the latest James Bond news (36:20), uncover a shared respect and fear for the greatest of all Keanu Reeves films (44:11), and mourn a botched night at the New Beverly Cinema that we’ll never get back (52:20). Kelly closes with a personal hidden gem recommendation. Personal shout-outs to Patrick’s friends - Grant, Grayson, Debbie and Jessica, Kelly’s friends - Clay and Michelle, and their only mutual friends - Tyler and Marianne. All this and more in just over an hour of fun for your earholes! (Contractual obligations to discuss Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series delayed until podcast #11)

Silver Screen Fiend (Scribner) Skylight Books welcomes back one of our favorite comedic minds --Patton Oswalt -- for a reading and signing of his new book,Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life From An Addiction to Film. NOTE: As with all Skylight Books events, this reading is free and open to the public (first come, first served). But because we're expecting a large crowd at this event, we'll be giving out numbered tickets to the signing line to keep things organized. To get a ticket to the signing line, you must purchase a copy of Silver Screen Fiend here at Skylight Books. Tickets will be available starting January 6th, 2015. They will be available in-store, or you can order on our website and leave a note in the "Order Comments" field. We will also hold a ticket for you if you order and pay for a book over the phone. In addition to books, Patton Oswalt will sign one additional item and will pose for one photograph with individual attendees, though you are welcome to take photos during the event and from the line (no flash please). Lastly, we ask that you please refrain from making an audio or video recording of the event. Thank you for your cooperation! From New York Times-bestselling author, multifaceted comedian and actor, and social media genius Patton Oswalt, a memoir of coming of age as a performer and writer while obsessively watching classic films at the legendary New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles in the mid-90s: Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film. In Patton Oswalt's own words, Silver Screen Fiend is “the dorkiest addiction memoir ever.” It tells the story of his early days in the comedy scene of Los Angeles. After moving to LA, he started hanging out constantly at the New Beverly Cinema, absorbing classics, cult hits, and new releases. The movies he views inform his notions of acting, writing, comedy, and relationships, and the colorful cast of characters he meets at the New Beverly fill in the rest. Praise for Silver Screen Fiend: "Silver Screen Fiend is both a love letter to artistic obsession and string of caution tape around it. Patton describes the ecstatic demands of the arts (in this case, Stand-up and Film) with insight, fond pity, and unfailing humor. This is a book for anyone who strives to be great, or is bored in an airport."--Joss Whedon "Patton Oswalt is one of the most brilliant comedy minds of a generation. This book confirms it."--Ricky Gervais Patton Oswalt is the author of the New York Times bestseller Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. He has released five TV specials and five critically acclaimed comedy albums, including two Grammy-nominated releases, My Weakness Is Strong and Finest Hour. Oswalt has also appeared on many television shows and in more than twenty films, including Young Adult, Big Fan, and Ratatouille. Oswalt was the host of the 29th Independent Spirit Awards and the 18th Annual Webby Awards. He lives in Los Angeles.
Oswalt—comedian, actor, social media genius—illuminates the story of his early days of the comedy scene in Los Angeles and his unshakeable addiction to the New Beverly Cinema. From Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, the bestselling author of Zombie Spaceship Wasteland chronicles his coming of age from fledgling stand-up at the Largo to self-assured sitcom actor. Oswalt’s witty prose proves that funny is just as fit for the page as it is the stage. Click here to see photos from the program!

This week, Julia Marchese joins Jen to discuss revival cinema, the type of movie theater that has classic and special programming rather than first run films. Working at and loving the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, Julia is a veritable expert on revival cinema and has also been inspired to fight back against studios phasing out 35mm film prints by making her upcoming documentary, Out of Print. Julia shares thoughts on the importance of revival cinema to movies as a whole, what makes the New Beverly so special, plus cool tidbits about Out of Print. She also reveals what it's like to have Quentin Tarantino as your landlord. If you're enjoying PrePopCulture, please rate/review it on iTunes, and like it on Facebook! 6/6/2012 José Leitão and Ryan Danhauser talk with Russell Cherrington, Restoration Director for Nightbreed about the Cabal Cut, and the Occupy Midian movement. The upcoming “Days of the Dead” Cabal Cut screening will be Sunday, June 10th 2012 (7:30pm in PDT) at the New Beverly Cinema, Los Angeles -with the presence of Mark Miller and Russell Cherrington. The following Cabal Cut screening will be at “Terror in the Aisles” on Friday, July 13th, at the Portage Theater in Chicago – also with Mark Miller and Russell Cherrington. “It had been dark at the beach for hours, he hadn't been smoking much and it wasn't headlights – but before she turned away, he could swear he saw light falling on her face, the orange light just after sunset that catches a face turned to the west, watching the ocean for someone to come in on the last wave of the day, in to shore and safety.”Sprawling yet intimate…digressive yet focused…surfing curlicued wavelengths of obsession and obfuscation—such is a fairly apt way of describing the tone of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice; it’s also a fair assessment of tonight’s megaconversation between our host and writer Kim Morgan.Inherent Vice. All The President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute seventeen host, Blake Howard joins the phenomenally talented writer/editor for Bright Wall Dark Room, host of Increment Vice, VP of One Heat Minute Productions and internet husband, Travis Woods. Blake and Travis take no time at all to bring around the conversation to detectives, "Gordie" Willis, asking why "Klute" is named "Klute," F. Murray Abraham as "a cop in a fishing hat" and so much more.About Travis Woods Travis Woods is a Contributing Editor at Bright Wall/Dark Room, as well as a writer for The New Beverly Cinema and Cinephilia & Beyond. He lives and writes in Los Angeles.
