Stef (@witchxpudding) & L (@nocturnical) discuss the viral found footage film The Outwaters (2022). Sure, the editors made some baffling but predictable editing choices — an out of control run-time for a tightly controlled time loop — but he's just a dude with his dick cut off (spoiler!) so if you can get down with the absurd & the Dramamine this may be a movie you can vibe with. This episode was edited by L. This episode is available as a video podcast on YouTube. Visit us at ghostinthemagazine.site or follow us on twitter @gitmpodcast. The 96th Academy Awards Ceremony is in a few weeks, but the annual outrage over the lack of horror movie nominations is in full swing. We fans know that the only award that matters is if you recommend a horror movie to your friends. In reality, 2023 was a damn good year for horror movies, with diverse styles and subgenres to satisfy any horror fan's tastes, and I have so many recommendations I needed two episodes to cover them! Join me as I celebrate the "Killer Elite," a list of horror movies that surprised me and I recommend them to horror fans! I hope you enjoy the show! Movies covered: Cobweb (2023) The Outwaters (2023) We Might Hurt Each Other (2023) Suitable Flesh (2023) Thanksgiving (2023) Destroy All Neighbors (2023)

Another year ending means another Wrap Up episode where we go over our top picks for the year, as well as discussing some other titles we've seen in 2023. While most of the films we do cover here as our favorite viewings for this year are from the last few years, they are not all from 2023. But as we've pointed out many times before, if you're watching it for the first time, no matter when it was released, as far as we're concerned, it still counts as a new movie to you! 2023 has been a great year for the horror genre, especially when you look outside the U.S., which we all hope everyone out there does, because there are some incredible titles coming from Spain, Malaysia, Argentina, Japan, and more. So hopefully our listeners are not restrainted by films that are "only in English", because those folks are sadly missing out on some incredible cinema. For this episode, we strongly suggest you have a notepad and pen close by to jot down some titles because we think we're going to give you more than a few that we feel you should be checking out. And a special HUGE thanks to those that continue to tune in and listen to us ramble on about the genre we love. With this being our 60th episode, it seems our following is growing day by day, so thank you for your continued support and in 2024, we'll continue to help you Discover the Horror! Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much, much more. In this episode, we're thrilled to welcome the innovative, resourceful, and determined filmmaker Robbie Banfitch. Robbie recently made an impressive debut with his first feature, 'The Outwaters.' 'The Outwaters' is a unique blend of survival horror and found footage with a touch of quantum horror. The film takes its audience on a terrifying journey into the heart of the Mojave Desert and straight to hell from there. Here, four travelers set up camp, initially to shoot a music video, but soon find themselves plunged into a harrowing, reality-bending nightmare. What begins as unexplained sounds, odd vibrations, and strange animal behavior soon morphs into a terrifying ordeal that challenges the very nature of their reality. Not only did Robbie direct this film, but he also wrote it, starred in it, and financed it while working full-time for Greenpeace. All of this was achieved on a meager budget of just $7,000, proving that creativity and drive can outshine even the tightest of budgets. The film premiered at the New Jersey Film Festival in 2022 and is now streaming on Screambox. Without further ado, please enjoy this conversation with Robbie Banfitch. Reflecting on our conversation with Robbie Banfitch, only one key takeaway stands out: if you want to be a filmmaker, there is simply no excuse not to make your movie. Robbie's journey with 'The Outwaters' showcases this in its purest form. With a limited budget, he managed to create a feature film that didn't feel restricted by its financial constraints but instead used them to inform its very intentional style and narrative. Horror is not just the most profitable genre—it's also the most adaptable. We've witnessed an explosion of creativity, with filmmakers exploiting simple technology to craft stories through Zoom calls, screen shares, and beyond. You're truly only limited by your imagination. Our guests consistently reiterate this advice which is: look at what you have and just start filming. We're in an era where excuses are obsolete. And Robbie is a shining example of this spirit. He's not only made Outwaters but has gone on to shoot two more features. Regardless of what he has access to, he's a relentless creative force who actualizes his projects, offering a pretty serious lesson for all of us. Robbie's journey reminds us to seize any and all opportunities and to start creating, regardless of our circumstances. As Robbie demonstrated, all it takes is a little ingenuity, tenacity, and a budget as low as $7,000. As I reflect on this conversation, it's clear that it's time I take this advice to heart myself, and I hope you listeners do too. Until next time, stay spooky and keep creating. Join us as we traverse the arid, alien landscape of 'The Outwaters,' Robbie Banfitch's found-footage horror that charts a group of friends' descent into terror in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Despite its ambitious intention and appealing premise, we found it lacking in narrative coherence, intentionality, and verisimilitude. Ryan was underwhelmed, generously allotting it a "stream" for its earnest attempt, and for the sake of staying up on the latest in independent horror. Tim had a much stronger reaction, labeling it a stern "avoid." Prepare to lose yourself in the shifting sands of our latest episode as we attempt to uncover 'The Outwaters,' a film that, in our estimation, also lost its way. In the viral hit The Outwaters, a group of friends venture to the Mojave desert to film a music video. Soon they begin to experience strange sounds, vibrations, and other mysteries. It all comes to a head one blood soaked night sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror. This one leaves a lot super vague, leaving us in the end wondering what the heck as that about? So we're breaking the story, including just what is out in the Mojave and explaining the ending. It's been a pretty chill week literally until the day of this recording, when a biiiiiig conversation happened. How do you handle mental health issues with love and understanding? Then, Dennis simply mortifies Bethany by quizzing her on Urban Dictionary phrases she's never heard before. (She gets him back by quizzing him on her own area of expertise: The Renaissance Festival.) Finally, Bebe and Dennis recently saw the horror movie "The Outwaters" and talk through how they'd survive this bug-nuts situation together with only their wits (and the 3 knives Dennis apparently has strapped to his legs). Today I'm joined by Robbie Banfitch, the writer/director behind The Outwaters. The film takes viewers off the beaten path and into their own nightmares. The film plays out over three memory cards found in a sun-drenched section of the Mojave Desert. The footage within is that of a foursome, who set out to make a music video while camping, led by a charismatic LA filmmaker. Their trip starts out uneventful, though their peace is occasionally disrupted by unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. Then one night everything changes, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support
