In this episode, we delve into the 2022 sci-fi horror film M3GAN, directed by Gerard Johnstone. The story centers on Gemma, a robotics engineer who becomes the guardian of her orphaned niece, Cady. To help Cady cope with her loss, Gemma introduces her to M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), an AI-driven doll designed to be the perfect companion. However, M3GAN's advanced learning capabilities lead her to develop self-awareness, resulting in unexpected and deadly consequences. We'll explore the film's surprisingly wry tone, its themes of artificial intelligence, the ethical boundaries of technological advancement, and the human need for connection. Additionally, we'll discuss how M3GAN fits into the lineage of killer doll narratives, drawing comparisons to iconic figures like Chucky and Annabelle. Join us as we analyze the film's commentary on the potential dangers of AI, its reflection on modern parenting in the digital age, and its place within the horror genre's exploration of technology run amok. Please rate and review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & Audible! --- Today marks a first on the podcast. Last year, I reviewed Gerard Johnstone's horror movie M3GAN (see Season 2, Episode 4) but after a recent rewatch with my wife, I found I have more to say about the PG-13 killer doll flick. I'm surprised by how much of the movie works as a cautionary tale for parents, highlighting certain anxieties of parenthood and the absolute wrong ways of handling them. Welcome to the Horror Project Podcast. Join hosts Laura and Phil as they review Housebound (2014).Housebound provided us with a mixed viewing experience, leaving us both satisfied and frustrated. The film captivated us with its intriguing plot centered around Kylie's attempt to uncover the supernatural secrets lurking within her mother's house, all while being confined to house arrest. This premise sparked a discussion about the challenges faced by adults living with their parents, shedding light on the complexities experienced by both the parent and the child in such situations. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of a reference to the popular British soap opera, Coronation Street, who knew it was also popular in New Zealand!?!?Plus we shall be finding a place on the leaderboard for the movie during our Ranking. We hope you enjoy the show, thanks for listening!Email - Horrorprojectpodcast@hotmail.com X (Formerly Twitter) - @TheHorrorProje1Instagram - horrorprojectpodcastTikTok - @horrorprojectpodcast

We're reviewing the Sci-Fi / horror M3gan, which attempts to fill a hole in modern horror. It combines The Terminator and Child's Play, and makes us question the implications of AI: will it be the end of humanity, or just give us robot pals? Although Wan's 2014 film Annabelle is about a killer doll, he said, "Pretty much the concept is about embracing technology too much and relying too much on it. And what happens when technology runs amok. It's a commentary on the world we live in and it feels relevant". Blum stated that the film would have black comedy elements which is one reason Johnstone was chosen to direct, saying "We needed someone who can do the thrills and set pieces, but who also has a cheeky approach". Wan admired Johnstone's film Housebound because of his ability to balance the horror and comedy elements by creating a tone that is both frightening and humorous, and this sensibility was essential for M3GAN.On a budget of $12 million, principal photography began in June 2021 taking place in Los Angeles, California, and Auckland, New Zealand. The suburbs of Auckland were utilized to lend the film a "Denver, Colorado, type feel". Filming was completed by mid-August right before a COVID-19 lockdown occurred in New Zealand. The film underwent reshoots in post-production in order to secure a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association, after the original cut was deemed too violent.M3GAN had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 7, 2022, before its wide theatrical release in the United States on January 6, 2023. It was originally scheduled to be released on January 13, 2023, before being moved up a week in order to avoid competition with House Party and the wide expansion of A Man Called Otto, which were also scheduled for January 13.As of January 29, 2023, M3GAN has grossed $82.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $63.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide gross of $146 million. In the United States and Canada, M3GAN was initially projected to gross $17–20 million from 3,509 theaters in its opening weekend. After making $11.7 million on its first day (including $2.75 million from Thursday night previews), estimates were increased to $27.5 million. It went on to debut to $30.4 million, finishing in second place at the box office behind holdover Avatar: The Way of Water. The film made $18.3 million in its second weekend, remaining in second. In its third and fourth weekends the film made $9.7 million and $6.4 million, finishing in third and fourth place, respectively. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 94% based on 282 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Unapologetically silly and all the more entertaining for it, M3GAN is the rare horror-comedy that delivers chuckles as effortlessly as chills." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 72 out of 100, based on 54 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale, while those polled at PostTrak gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. In January 2023, Johnstone confirmed talks of a sequel, with Wan explaining that he has an "idea of where sequels would go". A few weeks later, Universal set a release date of January 17, 2025, with the title revealed as M3GAN 2.0. The film will be written by Cooper with Williams and McGraw returning as Gemma and Cady, respectively. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing M3GAN (202) which is currently available to buy/rent and still in the theaters. With a screenplay by Akela Cooper from a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan, the film is directed by Gerard Johnstone. The story follows Cady (Violet McGraw) who is left orphaned after both her parents are killed in a car accident. After her recovery, she goes to live with her Aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) who faces a huge adjustment as she is unused to having young people in her environment. Deeply impacted by her niece's sadness, Gemma decides to perfect a project she'd been working on, Megan (Amie Donald, and voiced by Jenna Davis). Megan is an AI life sized doll who serves as a friend and companion. In a short time, Cady and Megan have formed a deep bond that is sweet but also has glimpses of something a little more sinister under it all. The film is rated PG-13 and clocks in at 1 h 42 m. The first big horror film of 2023 came out in January. Usually January is a dumping ground for films that producers think will fail, but not Jason Blum. MEGAN (2023), also known as MEGAN, appeared at US theaters on January 6th, 2023 and immediately became a hit. Gemma (Allison Willaims) works as an engineer and programmer at a toy company. She's on a deadline to upgrade their number one toy to be priced cheaper so it can compete against a competitor's rip-off. When her sister and brother-in-law die in a car accident, her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) comes to live with her. Though Gemma has no idea what to do with her niece, she has a project at work for a new robotic companion that she's named Megan (Amie Donald) that may be able to give Cady companionship. The movie is co-produced by Jason Blum and James Wan. Based on a story by James Wan and Akela Cooper (MALIGNANT), the screenplay was written by Cooper and directed by Gerard Johnstone. Critics have praised the movie and audiences have given it good reviews. With a budget of $12M USD, the movie has grossed over $131M USD. Your co-hosts take a look at this new film and give their thoughts.
Andá a saber. Vas a tener que escuchar.
M3GAN takes the concept of the killer doll movie into the 21st Century, improving on plastic and AA batteries with ever-learning AI, a world-class wardrobe and a fuckton of sass. What starts out as an emotional therapy robot for recently orphaned Cady (Violet McGraw) turns horrific as M3GAN (Amie Donald & Jenna Davis) takes her directive to protect Cady at all costs way too literally. M3GAN creator and aunt-turned-guardian Gemma (Allison Williams) is the only one who starts to see the cracks in M3GAN's otherwise flawless exterior, worrying for Cady's safety. Yes, this sounds like a Chucky ripoff, but director Gerard Johnstone and crew, operating from an Akela Cooper (Malignant) script, know the exact approach needed for this kind of movie: a winking, gleeful romp that blissfully indulges in stupidity. It's a goddamn ridiculous blast and man, is this movie (and this year) so much better for it. Long live the new titanium flesh. --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/

Universal Pictures brings us this Blum House horror about a killer doll (no, not the one you're thinking about). Directed by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN is the science fiction horror film written by Akela Cooper from a story by Cooper and James Wan (who also produced the film with Jason Blum). M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child's greatest companion and a parent's greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) - a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
Victor, Maddie, Zach, and Colleen join Caitlin to talk about M3GAN, the first big theater release of 2023 horror. We had a great time in the theater together, and we enjoyed talking about movie. We loved the humor and the scares, and we liked the Black-Mirror-esque questions the movie raised about AI. We also get into how and why Megan is a gay icon. Tangents include: Friday the 13th, Kraft macaroni and cheese, theater snacks, and, of course, TikTok.

Just what is it that attracts (most) of us to this James Wan-Blumhouse mash-up of mechanical malignancy? Is it the incredible performance of humans behind the machine? Available in cinemas now, the Mixed Bag crew head to the cinema once against to see if this robot is a TikTok flash in the pan or the real deal. A brilliant toy company roboticist uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll's programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend with terrifying results. The Cinematic Schematic returns for our first episode of 2023 to dive into the most haunting TikTok dance we've seen yet with our review of M3GAN. We kick things off by responding to listener feedback and responses to our top 5 films of 2022. We then speculate what the highest-grossing movie at the box office in 2023 will be before jumping into our spoiler-free review of M3GAN. AI has been a fear of audiences for decades going back at least as far back as rogue robots like HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968. Over the decades, there have been hundreds of movies exploring what potential horrors these learning machines could bring if not kept in check by the impulses of their creators. Lest we forget, we dedicated several essays to the role of AI in cinema back in October 2017. Furthermore, with AI evolving so rapidly through recent innovations like ChatGPT and design bots, the fears feel more timely than ever. Enter producer James Wan, writer Akela Cooper, and director Gerard Johnstone. After cracking a winning formula for silliness in 2021's sleeper flick, Malignant, the former two creatives have reunited to make this horror-comedy for gen-Z and the […] The post M3GAN Review – The Cinematic Schematic appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

Robert Winfree, Alexis Hejna, Jason Teasley and Mark Radulich present their M3GAN 2023 Movie Review! M3GAN (pronounced emthreeghin) is a 2022 American science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and a story by Cooper and James Wan, who produces alongside Jason Blum. The film stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN and Jenna Davis voicing the character. Its plot follows the eponymous artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile to anyone who comes between her and her human companion. This year's January horror blockbuster isn't child's play. Dollhouse? No, it's from Blumhouse! That's right, this week we're welcoming M3GAN into The Hollywood franchise family. Directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and written by Akela Cooper (Malignant), M3GAN stars Allison Williams as a genius toy inventor who tests out a life-size doll with artificial intelligence on her depressed niece (Violet McGraw). Hijinks ensue! We discuss the film's surprisingly brilliant marketing campaign, and we may or may not overanalyze the emotional intelligence of this seemingly disposable schlock. We had fun, basically. Intro Music: “Freddo Espresso (feat. Pixie Dust)” by No Spirit, Sátyr & Phlocalyst Links: Follow us on Twitter: Jon Negroni, Will Ashton Check out our Cinemaholics Merch! The gang is reflecting on last week's episode and awards show, as one particular Movie Master experienced a physiological and mental shift in the transition from season one into season two. Before getting too introspective, a Model 3 Generative Android invades the set and discussion turns immediately to "M3GAN," the absurdist horror-comedy-musical from director Gerard Johnstone. Tangentially, a discussion erupts on if Johnny Depp was cursed by a witch at some point to relegate him to a lifetime of needing to portray himself as "a rockin' dude" in civilian life. What is "guy service?" Tom Hanks' "A Man Called Otto" is up next and nobody seems grumpy about it. Did you catch the Chet Hanks Easter egg? Was his own father even aware of it? How does this movie compare to CM Punk's movie about buying an old house that ejaculates? The gang considers all angles, with one Movie Masters prepared to declare one character his "MILF of the Year." Welcome to Year Two. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

This week John, Dave & Jeff went with the teenagers to see M3GAN, the film that apparently makes young people in the theater want to watch Twitch, check their Snaps, record the screen, vape, and yell at each other for the duration. Lots of “bathroom” breaks, too. If only M3GAN would jump out of the screen and parent THESE kids by kicking their asses. The movie is about Allison Williams not wanting to parent her niece, so she develops a doll designed to make Mark Zuckerberg look like Winnie the Pooh. It's not terrifying, but it's spooky and thrilling enough with a skosh of humor to justify it's $30mill opening weekend. On todays episode I review the first movie of 2023, M3EGAN. This horror movie became a fan favorite as soon as the trailer dropped a few months ago. It was such a big opening weekend for this movie that I had to get two guests on the podcast to help me review it. Glenn and Liz, who are recurring guests on the podcast, joined me again with two choices for their throwback movies. Glenn chose 365 days which is the first ever erotica movies on the show. And Liz picked Father Stu starring Mark Wahlberg on Netflix. M3GAN (2023) Directed by Gerard Johnstone. A robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.365 Days (2020) Directed by Barbara BiaIowas and Tomasz Mandes. She does not expect that on a trip to Sicily trying to save her relationship, Massimo will kidnap her and give her 365 days to fall in love with him.Father Stu (2022) Directed by Rosalind Ross. From horror film producers Jason Blum & James Wan comes M3GAN, a movie about a robotics engineer at a toy company who builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.M3GAN blends horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller and comedy into an unforgettable story about AI and what it holds for us now and in the not too distant future. Are we ready? In our podcast, we have interviews with Allison Williams from "GET OUT" and producers Jason Blum & James Wan, Director Gerard Johnstone, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald and Jenna Davis. We also have movie clips and interviews from the World Premiere of M3GAN.
A look at this AI with a mind of her own with comments from Allison Williams, Jason Blum, Amie Donald, and director Gerard Johnstone. Special thanks to EPK.TV and Universal Pictures.
Evan is off this week, so it's the Dave and Megan show. But before the Dave and Megan show, Megan goes solo, covering M3GAN (3:01), the wild killer robot sci-fi horror movie, directed by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams. And - perfect timing - one of Dave's children interrupts and scares the crap out of him as he and Megan discuss said killer robot movie. Yeesh! Next, Megan and Dave talk about Noah Baumbach's absurdist comedy adaptation of Don DeLillo's unfilmable (question mark?) novel WHITE NOISE (17:41), starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. They round things out with Scott Cooper's mystery thriller THE PALE BLUE EYE (36:02), starring Christian Bale and featuring Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe. Don't forget to check out this week's Patreon exclusive audio in which Megan and Dave talk about Nora Ephron's "Sleepless in Seattle."
In this episode of Psycho-Cinematic, I review and discuss the movie, "M3GAN" (2023) directed by Gerard Johnstone.
