In 2023, Megan – a sassy robot, designed to be your daughter's best friend – danced and dismembered her way to internet infamy. The title character of director Gerard Johnstone and writer Akela Cooper's Blumhouse horror-comedy was an evil doll in the tradition of Chucky from Child's Play, but at the same time, distinct in her modernity. As I asked in my review for Empire Magazine at the time: “Has Chucky ever interrupted a stabbing spree to sing Sia's pop smash ‘Titanium'? Has Billy the Puppet ever broken into a TikTok-style dance before another Saw franchise victim met their violent demise?” The answer was no, and a moment in meme culture was born. There were SNL skits about Megan, starring Aubrey Plaza. The film took $181m at the box office against a paltry $12m budget. It seemed inevitable a sequel would follow – and two years later, that sequel is here.Written by Gerard, my guest today, from a story he conceived with Cooper, the film is bigger in every possible regard. It lays on the explosions and spectacle thicker and faster than before, throwing car chases and robot-on-robot fist fights into the mix this time around. It's higher in stakes: the fate of the world is on the line here, as a new rogue A.I threat, Amelia, emerges. And it's also more expansive in the conversation this Frankensteinian fable wants to have about parenthood, as well as the genie-out-of-the-bottle effect of artificial intelligence. But did you know in the first draft of this sequel, Joe Rogan and Snoop Dogg had brief parts written for them? Or that at one point in the script, Cady – played by Violet McGraw – has to fend off her sweet, old grandad in a fight scene in a diner, because he's being controlled by a neuro-chip? Or that the story initially involved Amelia firing missiles into the Middle East, sparking a new conflict in the region – a plot line removed for obvious reasons? In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Gerard walks me through his fascinating and extremely funny sequel. We get into all the important plot points in spoiler detail – and talk about the pressure of following up a film with the kind of immense digital footprint that the first one had.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The Lodgecast is back and so is M3GAN! Writer/director Gerard Johnstone returns to reinvent the M3GAN character as she battles with a new AI foe in humanoid military robot AMELIA. This PG-13 sequel veers away from horror into the sci-fi/comedy realm, and we'll let you know just how well this genre-bending follow-up works. Allison Williams returns along with her niece, played by Violet McGraw. Amie Donald plays M3GAN and Ivanna Sakhno plays AMELIA (Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics & Infiltration Android). And Jemaine Clement is in the mix for some corrupt tech bro comic relief. The film wasn't the box office hit the producers were hoping for, but we do hope for a M3GAN 3.0! I guess a spin-off erotic thriller SOULM8TE is in the works, which sounds promising! ❤️✨

She's back! After the smash success that was the first M3GAN that released in January of 2023, M3GAN has returned for her second adventure from Blumhouse. I enjoyed the first M3GAN way more than I should have at the time, despite it being a relatively tame, paint by numbers killer robot movie. I appreciated the attempt to at least tie it into the idea of heavy technological reliance when parenting; it was more than I expected from a mid-tier Blumhouse movie. Admittedly, that description makes up almost the entirety of the studio's output but nevertheless. The sequel, from the trailers, looked bigger and badder in just about every way. Is it sure to be one of the most entertaining films of the summer? On this week's episode, Megan talks about M3GAN 2.0 (2:58), the sci-fi action sequel which sees the return of the murderous robotic doll, directed by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, and Jenna Davis. Flawed yet intermittently fun, it's inferior to the sharply crafted and delightful original horror film. Then, Megan talks about RENT FREE (17:17), Fernando Andrés's indie comedy about two queer best friends (Jacob Roberts, David Treviño) attempting to live for a year without paying rent in Austin, Texas. Lastly, Dave and Megan discuss MY MOM JAYNE (29:01), Mariska Hargitay's emotional documentary about her mother, actress and icon Jayne Mansfield, as she explores her grief, delves into her mother's life, and reconciles her mother's image and legacy. It's a compelling and vulnerable film that we both recommend. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we discuss 1986 sci-fi thriller THE MANHATTAN PROJECT, starring John Lithgow, Christopher Collet, and Cynthia Nixon!

On Exploring Humanity Through Sci-Fi, I'm diving headfirst into the high-tech horror and haunting heart of M3GAN 2.0. This sequel's sharper, smarter, and even more spine-chilling than the original. First up, Allison Williams, the ever-intense Gemma, whose tech-savvy brilliance has consequences that spiral way out of control. Then, we hear from Violet McGraw, returning as Cady, whose bond with M3GAN has only grown more… complex. And steering the whole thrilling ride is director Gerard Johnstone, back at the helm to elevate the tension, the laughs, and the mayhem. So buckle up—because M3GAN isn't just back. She's evolved. And we're peeling back the layers of how this eerie icon was reengineered to terrify us all over again. Start Your Free One Year Trial at Sci-Fi Talk Plus

Welcome to the Horror Project Podcast. Join hosts Laura and Phil as they review Housebound (2014).Housebound provided us with a mixed viewing experience, leaving us both satisfied and frustrated. The film captivated us with its intriguing plot centered around Kylie's attempt to uncover the supernatural secrets lurking within her mother's house, all while being confined to house arrest. This premise sparked a discussion about the challenges faced by adults living with their parents, shedding light on the complexities experienced by both the parent and the child in such situations. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of a reference to the popular British soap opera, Coronation Street, who knew it was also popular in New Zealand!?!?Plus we shall be finding a place on the leaderboard for the movie during our Ranking. We hope you enjoy the show, thanks for listening!Email - Horrorprojectpodcast@hotmail.com X (Formerly Twitter) - @TheHorrorProje1Instagram - horrorprojectpodcastTikTok - @horrorprojectpodcast

The first big horror film of 2023 came out in January. Usually January is a dumping ground for films that producers think will fail, but not Jason Blum. MEGAN (2023), also known as MEGAN, appeared at US theaters on January 6th, 2023 and immediately became a hit. Gemma (Allison Willaims) works as an engineer and programmer at a toy company. She's on a deadline to upgrade their number one toy to be priced cheaper so it can compete against a competitor's rip-off. When her sister and brother-in-law die in a car accident, her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) comes to live with her. Though Gemma has no idea what to do with her niece, she has a project at work for a new robotic companion that she's named Megan (Amie Donald) that may be able to give Cady companionship. The movie is co-produced by Jason Blum and James Wan. Based on a story by James Wan and Akela Cooper (MALIGNANT), the screenplay was written by Cooper and directed by Gerard Johnstone. Critics have praised the movie and audiences have given it good reviews. With a budget of $12M USD, the movie has grossed over $131M USD. Your co-hosts take a look at this new film and give their thoughts.
Spoilers: 28m42sNotas: 37m20s--Paramount+ | Teen Wolf: The Movie & Wolf PackHistórias únicas. Victor, Maddie, Zach, and Colleen join Caitlin to talk about M3GAN, the first big theater release of 2023 horror. We had a great time in the theater together, and we enjoyed talking about movie. We loved the humor and the scares, and we liked the Black-Mirror-esque questions the movie raised about AI. We also get into how and why Megan is a gay icon. Tangents include: Friday the 13th, Kraft macaroni and cheese, theater snacks, and, of course, TikTok.

This year's January horror blockbuster isn't child's play. Dollhouse? No, it's from Blumhouse! That's right, this week we're welcoming M3GAN into The Hollywood franchise family. Directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and written by Akela Cooper (Malignant), M3GAN stars Allison Williams as a genius toy inventor who tests out a life-size doll with artificial intelligence on her depressed niece (Violet McGraw). Hijinks ensue! We discuss the film's surprisingly brilliant marketing campaign, and we may or may not overanalyze the emotional intelligence of this seemingly disposable schlock. This week John, Dave & Jeff went with the teenagers to see M3GAN, the film that apparently makes young people in the theater want to watch Twitch, check their Snaps, record the screen, vape, and yell at each other for the duration. Lots of “bathroom” breaks, too. If only M3GAN would jump out of the screen and parent THESE kids by kicking their asses. The movie is about Allison Williams not wanting to parent her niece, so she develops a doll designed to make Mark Zuckerberg look like Winnie the Pooh. It's not terrifying, but it's spooky and thrilling enough with a skosh of humor to justify it's $30mill opening weekend. Evan is off this week, so it's the Dave and Megan show. But before the Dave and Megan show, Megan goes solo, covering M3GAN (3:01), the wild killer robot sci-fi horror movie, directed by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams. And - perfect timing - one of Dave's children interrupts and scares the crap out of him as he and Megan discuss said killer robot movie. Yeesh! Next, Megan and Dave talk about Noah Baumbach's absurdist comedy adaptation of Don DeLillo's unfilmable (question mark?) novel WHITE NOISE (17:41), starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. They round things out with Scott Cooper's mystery thriller THE PALE BLUE EYE (36:02), starring Christian Bale and featuring Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe. Don't forget to check out this week's Patreon exclusive audio in which Megan and Dave talk about Nora Ephron's "Sleepless in Seattle."
