elle nash is an electrifying writer based in glasgow, scotlandthis is about her book 'deliver me' - At a meatpacking facility in the Missouri Ozarks, Dee-Dee and her co-workers kill and butcher 40,000 chickens in a single shift. The work is repetitive and brutal, with each stab and cut a punishment to her hands and joints, but Dee-Dee's more concerned with what is happening inside her body. After a series of devastating miscarriages, Dee-Dee has found herself pregnant, and she is determined to carry this child to term.Dee-Dee fled the Pentecostal church years ago, but judgment follows her in the form of regular calls from her mother, whose raspy voice urges Dee-Dee to quit living in sin and marry her boyfriend Daddy, an underemployed ex-con with an insect fetish. With a child on the way, at long last Dee-Dee can bask in her mother's and boyfriend's newfound parturient attention. She will matter. She will be loved. She will be complete. When her charismatic friend Sloane reappears after a twenty-year absence, feeding her insecurities and awakening suppressed desires, Dee-Dee fears she will go back to living in the shadows. Neither the ultimate indignity of yet another miscarriage nor Sloane's own pregnancy deters her: she must prepare for the baby's arrival.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

Send us a Text Message.Elle Nash's Deliver Me ruined my week. In the best possible way. This book, about a woman so desperate for a child that she does truly terrible, no-good things, contains some of the bleakest, most brutal scenes I've read in a while. And it's not even really being treated as a horror novel. Elle and I talk about that. We also talk about the hot-button topics of the novel, the patriarchy, the toxic Christianity, the… insect erotica! But we also discuss her wandering heart and the empathy and provocation that drives her work. It's a lovely, laid back conversation about a challenging book. This week, we planned to talk to Elle Nash about Perfect Blue, but the space weather had other plans. Between her being in the UK now and Kelby driving in his car, Zoom could not handle it. So we rescheduled that, keep an eye out in the future! However, the episode has to happen! There is a schedule. Kelby and I decided to do something a little different. It was a bit of a scramble, but he pulled it altogether. This episode begins with him and his fam in their car arguing with Siri. Then there's a clip of the reading I did last Saturday, opening up for the crazy ass Estonian performance art group Non Grata. I was reading from my new book about Death Stranding, You Pray for Dry Weather at the Sight of the Sun. Then we recorded a regular conversation about dad stuff, writing books, and podcasts. The clips from the actual NG performance are mixed into the whole thing. A little different this time, but I think it's a solid episode! Enjoy.

Very happy to have Elle Nash on the show. Her novel, Animals Eat Each Other, will be out from Dzanc Books in 2018. She's the fiction editor over at Hobart Pulp, and the founding editor of Witch Craft Magazine. In this episode we talk about her pregnancy, life in Arkansas, her time as a follower of Islam, the necessity of spiritual practice, living your best life, corporate drone-ism, politicians, and Marilyn Manson. Enjoy!!! P.S. A few of the ideas I express in this one (particularly the stuff about the current failure of scientific materialism) is cribbed entirely from the work of Gordon White, who explains these things WAY better than I do on the recent episode of Against Everyone with Conner Habib. So check that out, after you listen to this one.
Got witchy with Elle Nash. We talked sigils, poetry, & motherhood. Elle Nash is the author of the forthcoming novel Animals Eat Each Other (Dzanc Books, 2018), and the chapbooks AVOKA (Ghost City Press, 2017) and i can remember the meaning of every tarot card but i can’t remember what i texted you last night (Nostrovia Press, 2016). She is a founding editor at Witch Craft Magazine.
