To be reductive, it's Found Footage Evil Dead. To be specific, it's a modern triumph of horror from a hugely creative and talented wife/husband duo. It proves that millions of dollars are no substitute for raw talent.
Mark and John discuss the 2022 horror comedy Deadstream. Directed by Joseph Winter and Vanessa Winter, and starring Melanie Stone and Joseph Winter (who also co-wrote and produced the film), this found footage delight will put a massive smile on your face and make you consider buying a potato gun. In this episode, they also talk about cheeky horror comedies, likable idiots, and squishy practical effects. Enjoy!

Deadstream (2022) Directed by: Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter Starring: Joseph Winter, Melanie Stone, Jason K. Wixom, barely any other fuckers. The next movie in our Horrorween 2024 extravaganza is a cornucopia of douchetuber activity. Vanessa and Joseph Winter are a writer/director duo best known for their critically acclaimed SXSW midnighter “Deadstream,” a horror comedy coming to Shudder in October. They also wrote and directed a segment of the highly anticipated V/H/S/99 which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.Their feature debut, Deadstream, has been getting rave reviews since it debuted at SXSW (it's at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes). The film is about a disgraced internet personality who tries to win back followers by live-streaming himself alone at a haunted house. The whole thing takes place in real-time and is a found-footage style film with the bonkers horror-comedy feel of early Sam Raimi. It's a funny satire of social personalities and a creepy, supernatural flick. It impressively balances the mixture of tones. They also have a segment in the latest entry to the V/H/S/ series, V/H/S/99. It premiered at TIFF, with many critics citing their segment “To Hell And Back” as a highlight. Like Deadstream, it mixes horror with comedy and is filled with horrific, practical creatures.Vanessa and Joseph met in film school and have worked together ever since. Before shifting to focus on writing/directing/acting, the duo cut their teeth doing everything from art direction to score composition to costumes to production design to editing. They have an interesting story about getting these projects off the ground that feels like a great fit for the podcast. Joseph also listens to Indie Film Hustle and was excited to be part of the show! Please enjoy my conversation with Vanessa & Joseph Winter.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Olá ouvintes do cemitério, e bem vindos de volta ao NecrofilmecoN depois de tanto tempo. A saber e pra começar, um pedido de desculpas: este episódio era pra ter saído no halloween. Do ano passado. O qual traz novidades. Espero que gostem. E que dure.

You know what the people secretly yearn for? Musical episodes. We're joined by LA-based Art and Production Designer, Abbie Vance, known for projects like The Wolf of Snow Hollow, Deadstream and Nine Days, who speaks about the movie that pushed her from a path in film direction & writing to production design - The Phantom of the Paradise (1974). Aside from her experience with the movie, we have lots of unique trivia to share about The Phantom of the Paradise, even about one of France's most famous bands that credits their aesthetic and start to this movie. I highly recommend this episode and discussion. Don't miss out.

It's Episode 283 and congratulations to Repeat Repeat in Monkeys Running the Zoo III. When Evil Lurks (2023) tells the story of brothers Pedro and Jaime. When a neighbour in their rural town comes down with a case of Demonic Possession, they begin a series of increasingly desperate (and ill-advised) methods to contain the monster before it can wreak havoc. We talk about inadequate public health messaging; the wonders of modern technology; and the benefits of keeping a low profile. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Evil loves children. And children love evil. Next up: Deadstream (2022) over at Patreon.com/howtosurvivepod

In this spooky Halloween special, I'm joined by Ethan James @TheHonestCarpenter to discuss our favorite scary movies just in time for Halloween. We explore various horror subgenres, from classic slashers to modern gems, sharing recommendations and insights. Some of the movies discussed: "Happy Death Day" "Totally Killer" "The Blackcoat's Daughter" "Terrifier" and "Terrifier 2" "Saw" (Franchise) VHS Series (Found Footage Anthology) "Halloween Trick 'r Treat" "Evil Dead Rise" "Ginger Snaps" "Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou" "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" "Werewolves Within" John Carpenter's Films ("The Fog," "Christine") "Motel Hell" "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" "Infinity Pool" "Deadstream" Nicolas Cage Films ("Adaptation," "Pig," "Becky," "Wrath of Becky") We share our thoughts on cult favorites like "Terrifier" and the unique anti-hero Jigsaw from the "Saw" franchise. We also delve into the world of found footage horror with the VHS series, emphasizing the artistry and creativity behind these shorts. We also touch on "Evil Dead Rise" and its fresh urban take on the horror classic. Werewolf movies briefly take the spotlight, with "Ginger Snaps" standing out as a memorable example. We continue our discussion by exploring recent horror releases, including "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and the comedy-horror gem "Werewolves Within." We share insights on the experience of rewatching older films and highlight their enjoyment of John Carpenter's classics like "The Fog" and "Christine." And let's not forget about kitschy horror favorites such as "Motel Hell" and "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies." The episode also delves into marketing strategies, with A24's approach to promoting independent cult films being commended. The effectiveness of movie trailers and the trend of young filmmakers attempting to include everything in their movies are explored. The Lovecraftian genre, Nicolas Cage's diverse roles in horror, and a brief mention of "Deadstream" round out our discussion. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize their belief that a good film should be evaluated not solely on objective elements like acting and budget, but on its ability to tell a compelling story and evoke emotions. We share their appreciation for films that surprise and engage the audience, leaving a lasting impression. Ethan on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHonestCarpenter
