This week I get to chat to Daniel Amen, an American celebrity doctor who practices as a psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist as director of the Amen Clinics. We have a fascinating conversation about mental health, and an opinion of what it means to study the brain and how to take care of it from a different perspective than reflected in the mainstream. This is not a recommendation to stop taking any medication you may have been prescribed to treat mental health disorders. For this episode of Craft Talk, I am joined by singer-songwriter, Mark Harrell. Mark is based out of Holland, Michigan, and performs original music with his band “Mark Harrell and The Hundred Star Hotel”. During this conversation, we dove into Mark's story and learned about how songwriting became a source of healing from a dark past. Early in his teens, Mark fell heavily into drugs and alcohol. For years, this addiction resulted in destructive and very dangerous situations. One incident in particular that he shared with me became the catalyst to start the journey of sobriety. A crucial moment that lead into the calling to write and express his experience through honesty and song. There were so many other topics that we talked about. We also chatted about his love for movies, his songwriting process, and how he is dealing with adversity in both life and music. Ultimately, I was honored to have the opportunity to hear Mark's story and I hope that our conversation can inspire and encourage others. I admire his level of vulnerability so much, and there's no doubt that listening to his music after this conversation will give me so much more context and connection after knowing more about his story. Check out Mark's music on all streaming platforms and say hello on Instagram @harrell_mark Enjoy the interview! Well I know I added a few pounds this year with all the lockdowns and shutdowns! Love ME some, homemade cookies and my partner likes to cook! Awesome for me and bad for me!That is the problem with how we react under pressure! What are your coping reactions? Projection onto others? Dissociation - shutdown and separate from life...Self-medicating ? food, feel-good substances... Denial that problems are there - if I pretend it is not there it will go away.... NOT... Let's talk about how to turn unhealthy coping reactions into positive control! Reference for this weeks show; Psychology Today. The title is odd I know - but in this week's podcast, we are talking about how to find gratitude for the strength that the bad experiences have built into you! Yes, good is wonderful and easy to be grateful for but can you embrace the Attitude of Gratitude for the negative experiences - not glad that happened - just grateful that you have new abilities and powers because they happened! This week we look at the difference between a high energy person vs. ADHD So many times I have had adults come into therapy and have a bunch of diagnoses for behaviors that treatment has not worked for. that is because they were in fact adult ADHD and they never knew it. Simply put ADHD messes with your life where high energy does not cause as many problems.... Adult ADHD symptoms may include:Impulsiveness (money, words,) Disorganization and problems prioritizing (what do I do first) Poor time management skills (late for work, forgot appointments) Problems focusing on a task (start a task move to a new one ) Trouble multitasking (never finish a task) Excessive activity or restlessness (always need to move something) Poor planning (no idea what they have to do next week)Low frustration tolerance (feeling overwhelmed) Frequent mood swings (happy, angry, sad all in like 10 mins) Problems following through and completing tasks Hot temper (see frustration) Trouble coping with stressRelationship problems Missing personal responsibilities (forgetting bills) Reference - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/adult-adhd/symptoms-causes/syc-20350878National Helpline – 1-800-662-HELP (4357)SAMHSA's National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.------Music from https://filmmusic.io "Eternity and Shades of Spring" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Email comments and questions to:everydaypsychologypodcast@gmail.com

Welcome everyone to the conclusion of my season finale episode, I'm Not My Skin. This episode is based on the topic of colorism. I chose this topic for my season finale episode because this is a touchy subject among African Americans. Colorism may not be a topic that is a threat to society, but it is a threat to our community. The relentless comparison whether you are beautiful because of your skin color is a threat to our mental health. It's time for us to unite instead of dividing. The artist that I'm going to feature for part one and part two is Deejay Young. His song perfectly fits the theme of this episode. He is available on all music streaming platforms, please go support. On this episode I wanted to shed light on suicide awareness. According to the World Health Organization close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. The highest suicide rates in the US are among Whites, American Indians and Alaska Natives. While African Americans rate are lower, they are steadily rising, especially within our younger generation. My panel will share their personal stories on how they overcame their struggles with suicidal thoughts. I hope you guys enjoy this episode. If you are dealing with suicidal thoughts please don't be afraid to talk with someone! The artist I'm featuring this week is my friend and a talented r&b singer Keeyen Martin.
