Episode 514 – A Drinking Problem is Totally Normal Today we have Erin. She is 50 years old from Denver, CO and took her last drink on August 21st, 2023. Registration for Dry January is now open. This is our most intensive course, and it's all about accountability. If you've been trying to quit drinking and haven't found success, it's most likely you're not surrounded by the right people or don't have community. Over 70% of our Restore Dry January participants report making it through January without taking a drink. Café RE is the social app for sober people. We meet over 30 times a month online with our daily chats covering all different topics or specialty chats. If you're looking for accountability with others who are ditching the booze or have already done so, we'd love to have you. [02:48] Thoughts from Paul: Paul's opinion is that a drinking problem is a normal response to living in a culture that has completely lost its marbles. Most anthropologists believe that addiction is a modern phenomenon that stems from how we are living as a culture. Eckhart Tolle in his book A New Earth says that what we have labeled as “normal” regarding our culture is actually completely insane. Gabor Mate recently wrote The Myth of Normal about how our culture is toxic and right for addiction. According to Dr. Mate, addiction isn't a disease but a completely normal response to living in a fucked-up world. Your drinking problem is not your fault. It is a response to a fractured world. You found a solution, a way to cope and it worked for a while. As Laura McKowen says, “it's not your fault but it is your responsibility”. Listening to a sobriety podcast is part of you taking that responsibility. [08:08] Paul introduces Erin: Erin is 50 years old and divides her time between Colorado and Costa Rica. She has been married for 26 years and they have three college age children. Erin has a yoga business where she films YouTube videos, hosts retreats and does yoga teacher training. Erin says her drinking was “normal” throughout high school and college. After graduating from college, she and her boyfriend moved to Maui and had jobs in the restaurant industry. She still feels her drinking was normal compared to her friends and lifestyle. They soon moved back to Colorado, got married and started a family. Erin didn't drink throughout her pregnancies and didn't feel she was missing out initially. After moving into a neighborhood with other young families like there, drinking became a social activity, and Erin began to recognize she drank more and had a higher tolerance than others. In her mid-forties, Erin started going through perimenopause and it was hard on her. She began using alcohol to self-medicate. Because of her job, she felt she was living out of alignment with her values. In spite of her drinking being a huge topic with her therapist, she was not ready to seek treatment. She attempted to quit on her own and says she white knuckled for five months before going back to drinking, quickly back to where she was before quitting. When her husband and her friends tried to intervene, she was angry. They had already arranged everything, and Erin ended up going to rehab and in spite of her fear, ended up being a great experience. Erin says they focused on healing the whole person, and once she realized for the first time that she was not alone, she felt the shame and fear lift. It was a small community, and they participated in a lot of modalities for healing. The education was a helpful part of the process. Erin dove into books, podcasts, attended AA meetings, and joined Café RE which she considers her primary resource. Erin says her yoga practice has contributed to her healing. Erin's parting piece of guidance: If you are thinking you can't do it, you can. It's possible and worth every single second of pain. Recovery Elevator It all starts from the inside out. Most Gen X-ers did not grow up idolising 5am-rising yoga girlies. For many of us, drinking "like the boys" was almost an act of feminist pride, and certainly the way we knew we were having a "good time". Holidays, celebrations, milestones. Wine o'clock, and the witching hour and the glass (or two) that marks the end of the work day... Alcohol is woven into our social lives in an almost invisible way. So what happens when you realise that the habit you thought of as your little helper is actually making everything worse? On this episode, we're talking to Shanna Whan from Sober In The Country about why Generation X women drink so damn much. Shanna says that 90% of the people who seek support from her peer-to-peer organisation are women aged between 40 and 60. That's us, friends. So why do Gen X women drink so damn much? How do you know if you've got a problem? And if it isn't you you're worried about, how do you talk to people in your life about their drinking? Welcome to MID episode 3: Alcohol. Being High-Functioning Doesn't Mean You Don't Have a Drinking Problem I understand why you feel that way and how easy it is to separate from the pack when your habits and struggles look different. It does create a sense of being different and not fitting in to traditional methods and programs. And it's hard to call yourself an alcoholic when your picture of what an alcoholic is, is not good. But let me ask you this – if you are high-functioning, does that mean your problem is different? Or your lifestyle is different? And if you continue to view your problem as different, which is probably what you've been doing, then you could continue to stay stuck in yo-yo sobriety, wasting your time and energy for months or years. So what do high-functioning problem drinkers do to be successful at sobriety? Well, we start with facing the real problem, instead of being distracted by the lifestyle and labels. Think about it – there are tens of millions of people with drinking problems across the globe. There is no way all of our details are going to be the same. How we live, education, houses, jobs, cars, money, how much we drink, how often we drink, trauma… all of these details will vary to some degree. But our misuse of alcohol is the same. If you're like most of my clients, you use alcohol as a way to numb feelings and discomfort. You use it as a way to connect with your friends, to make laundry and kids and chores feel more doable, to escape the stresses of reality and adulting. So, isn't it more important to focus on the causes and conditions so you can get away from alcohol, get control of your life back, and be present with your family? Joining a supportive group, such as Tribe Sober, can provide encouragement and a sense of belonging. Usefulness of Tracking Progress: The tracker is a useful tool for recording and celebrating sobriety milestones. It should be used as a positive tool for encouragement rather than a means of self-criticism. Tangible Benefits of Tracking: Filling in a tracker, especially a paper one, provides a tangible and visceral sense of accomplishment. Celebrating small successes helps shift focus from negative thoughts to positive achievements. Finding Your "Why": Understanding why you want to change and focusing on the positive benefits helps in times of difficulty. A clear sense of purpose and positive motivations make the journey of change easier. Reframing Challenges as Opportunities: Viewing challenges as opportunities for positive change reframes the mindset. Sobriety is not a loss but an opportunity to gain a wonderful life with better health and relationships. Gaining More Than Losing: The worries about losing things due to sobriety often turn out to be unfounded. Sobriety brings numerous gains, including improved physical and mental well-being. Community Support and Celebrating Success: The importance of community support, such as Zoom Cafés, in celebrating and cheering for each other's successes. Helping others find healthy coping strategies and sharing success stories creates a positive and encouraging environment. Tips for Early Sobriety, Especially During the Festive Season: Plan Ahead: Plan activities and responses to challenging situations. Be Curious: Approach the sobriety journey with curiosity and self-reflection. Visualize Success: Envision positive outcomes and focus on enjoyable aspects of events. Choose Happiness: Opt for happiness over being right in arguments. Have an Escape Plan: Plan exit strategies if social situations become challenging. Starting the Sobriety Journey: Take the First Step: Acknowledge the need for change and start with small goals. Be Curious: Embrace curiosity as a companion in sobriety. Progress, Not Perfection: Understand that setbacks happen, and progress is more important than perfection. Continuous Learning: Keep developing coping strategies and seek support through coaching and reading. Episode 428 – Do I have a Drinking Problem? Today we have Lauren, she is 54 from Rochester NY, and took her last drink on November 19, 2022. Shout out to Ty with 15 YEARS alcohol free! Thank you for all you do for RE! Shout out to Bradley from south Denver with 3 days alcohol free! Great job! Café RE is a private online unsearchable recovery community. Get accountable and be the best version of you. Together is always better! Use promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the setup fee. [03:23] Intro summary: In the past Paul has talked about the worst place a person can be with a drinking problem is in limbo (episode 417). But how do we find out if we actually have a problem so we can get out of that space? There is a test listed in the DSM-5 to determine if we have a drinking problem or not. There are 11 questions, and you must meet two of them within the past 12 months to have what is called Alcohol Use Disorder. It's not hard to determine if you have a drinking problem based on that test. But at the end of the day, it can be as simple as if you question if you have a drinking problem, you just answered your own question. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [12:36] Kris introduces Lauren: Lauren has been sober almost 4 months at the time of recording. She lives in Rochester New York, she is married, has two adult children, one granddaughter, has pets and owns her own business helping the elderly. She enjoys time outside, crafting (currently diamond painting), reading and learning new things. Lauren was always fascinated with alcohol, but it wasn't prevalent in her immediate family. When she was 16, she was able to purchase alcohol for her and her friends. She had a lot of fun and thought it was cool. She chose the college based on their drinking culture; she drank heavily but still did well in school. After college she got married, had two kids and a successful job. She drank the same as other parents around her, so she felt that was normal. She was able to abstain when she had her children and feels her drinking was more or less recreational for a long time. Over the years Lauren hadn't really tried to quit drinking. She would make a halfhearted attempt at Dry January, but it didn't last. She didn't think it had anything to do with being addicted. She feels that everyone else saw signs that her drinking was a problem, but she wasn't aware of it. After going on a very long-awaited vacation in 2022, Lauren says she had a hard time coming back to regular life and the stressors were magnified. Soon after, she drunkenly alienated a friend on Facebook, and it really impacted her when the friendship ended. She started drinking to escape everything that was bothering her. Lauren had a scare during her third blackout in eight days and decided to go to the doctor where she told them everything. She was sent to an outpatient program to start the next day. She has found a lot of tools and inspiration through the outpatient program. Lauren says AA didn't resonate with her, but she does do SMART recovery online which she enjoys. Connecting with others has been a great resource for Lauren as well. She views her drinking and recovery as just part of her, she doesn't feel it defines her. Lauren recognizes that she is happier and communicate better with her husband. Her family is relieved and proud of her for going into recovery. [57:20] Outro: Spring is here! And with seasonal changes come new challenges. Kris feels that it is a chance for him to make sure he has his accountability in place and has a plan when it comes to spring and more outdoor events. Don't stress about upcoming events, simply be aware of what is out there. Set yourself up to enjoy the weather and reach your alcohol-free goals. Episode 417 – The Best and Worst Place to be With a Drinking Problem Today we have Jenny, she is 36 from Hudson, WI and took her last drink on 2/16/2020. Shout out to our Café RE hosts! They do an amazing job. If you are interested in joining, click the link and use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to wave the setup fee. [02:45] Intro Summary: When Paul describes the best and worst places to be with a drinking problem, they both look a lot alike. That realization that alcohol no longer serves us, but we can't imagine life without it can be a scary place to be. Alcohol has us right where it wants us. It may feel like part of you is dying, that feeling is grief. But on the flip side, when we realize that alcohol no longer serves us, we can see that as an invitation to live the life we were meant to live. We are at the tipping point about to embark upon the greatest journey in our life. We are all right where we need to be. Life will keep giving us the same lesson until we are ready to learn or make a change. By making that first jump into the unknown, you give others courage to do the same. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [10:15] Paul introduces Jenny: Jenny is 36 and lives in the small town of Hudson WI. She is married and they have one son together. She works in education and enjoys the outdoors – camping, backpacking, she also enjoys gardening, yoga and in recovery she learned that she likes to read. Jenny's drinking started when she was just 11 years old. A traumatic event that she didn't share with anyone had her feeling alone and out of place. Jenny realized she loved drinking right from the start. She grew up aspiring to be the bad girl with the tough persona because it helped her put up a guard to protect herself. She enjoyed drinking and was willing to try any other drugs. When she was 20 her and her boyfriend moved to Montana. She thought she could escape her issues, but that didn't work. Her addictions got worse and while she would quit some things, the alcohol remained which helped her believe that she didn't have a problem because drinking was socially acceptable. At age 30, she lost a pregnancy and her drinking evolved from drinking for fun to being self-destructive. She later got pregnant again and her son was born 18 months later. She still struggled to quit drinking during pregnancy and since her doctor told her it was ok, she saw that as a green light to keep drinking. When their son was 7 weeks old, they moved back home from Montana to their hometown to be close to family. In debt, postpartum with no job, the lived in her in-law's basement and her drinking got really bad. No one called her out because drinking was all part of the culture. Her turning point was after Super Bowl Sunday when she had crippling anxiety the day after and ended up staying in bed for two days with very dark thoughts. There is a history of suicide in her family and that is what stopped her from that path. She says she was sober from alcohol for the first 14 months but doesn't feel like she was in recovery. She ended up going to AA in April of 2021 and hasn't looked back. To her, there is a big difference between being sober and being in recovery. She is doing things that she likes to do instead of just not drinking. She feels like every day is a victory and she counts every day as it helps motivate her. At first, she had a hard time letting go of the old persona, but now she has let go of that and has redefined who she is. She loves mornings now and is doing well in her job. She also loves yoga and attends AA meetings frequently as well as other online community events. Connect with Cafe RE - Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee.
