The Dallas Stars can’t win a Stanley Cup playoffs spot in the next six games. However, they can lose one. It will all come down to whether they can shake off whatever bad mojo they’re dealing with and make that move to shut down the suffering Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings. But honest-to-Pete elites Ben Bishop and Alexander Radulov are done for the season, and depth defender Sami Vatanen was the Stars’ only NHL trade deadline acquisition. Do they have enough left in the tank to scoop up at least nine of the next 12 available points? It’s a honest question. Wes Lawrence and Rob McClay put their heads together and searched for clues as to how much #Disco the Victory Green Gang can muster. In this episode: How will the confirmed losses of Bish and Rads affect the Stars’ home-stretch hopes? Under the circumstances, should they have shut down Tyler Seguin while they were at it? Leaving out the disappointment of not getting a top-six scorer at the TDL, is Vatanen...actually a pretty good get? Is it wrong to be glad they didn’t trade Jamie Oleksiak for that scoring help? How soon will Jake Oettinger go from being the Stars’ future in net to just being the star, in net? And how much better or worse off could the team be if Rick Bowness took the leash off Denis Gurianov and let him run amok? All this, and the return of The Predictions Game, are here for you in the latest edition of Stargazing. (That’s right. Settle down.) You, too, can be part of the next Stargazing! Post your puck questions in the comments, at Defending Big D, or @WesALawrence, @LoganStarkChel and @KETibbetts.

Obviously, last week was pretty hectic in terms of trades for the New Jersey Devils with Palms and Zajac now gone. However, Fitzgerald and the front office didn't seem to stop there, because they made a few minor moves that fell under the radar. The most confusing one would have to be the trade for Jonas Siegenthaler. But, other than that I think we all expected for Vatanen and Kulikov to be on the move whether it be via trade or waivers. Even with the start of the NHL season right around the corner, the Devils aren't done making free agency moves. They decided to resign Sami Vatanen to a 1 year deal. Even though this move is for temporary purposes, I still feel as though this will help benefit our roster and defense. Nico Hischier took the NHL by storm as an 18-year-old. Despite his strong rookie campaign, he got almost no recognition in terms of rookie of the year voting. He'll look to avoid the dreaded Sophomore Slump in 2018-19. We'll discuss what's next for the Swiss Center. Then, it's a look at the fruit of Ray's labor, in defenseman Sami Vatanen. After Vatanen came over in a trade with Anaheim, he quickly asserted himself as the Devils best defenseman. Can he shoulder a big load this time around?
As we roll on through May, it's on to two more polarizing players for grades. Jesper Bratt started out strong but finished the second half of the season without much production. As for Sami Vatanen, he was instantly the Devils best defender since coming over from Anaheim. We'll also touch on Team USA at the World Championships, as Keith Kinkaid notched his 2nd straight shutout in a 3-0 Team USA win over Germany. Towards the end of the show, we react live to the latest information about the successful surgeries for Taylor Hall, Cory Schneider and Patrick Maroon.
There was so much to like about the rookie season of Nico Hischier. He took on the first line center role and ran with it, en route to a playoff berth. We will hand out a grade for the young center and for defenseman John Moore, as well. We also chatted about 2017 5th round pick Gilles Senn making the Swiss roster for the World Championships and the differences between Tom Wilson's hit on Zach Aston-Reese and Nikita Kucherov on Sami Vatanen.
Neither game was perfect, in fact both were far from it, but the end result was exactly what the Devils hoped for. New Jersey comes back home with four points after their back-to-back in Tampa and Carolina. Eddie Lack and Keith Kinkaid both provided strong goaltending over the weekend and Nico Hischier, Pavel Zacha, Sami Vatanen and Taylor Hall all stayed hot. We'll break down both games and take a look at the week ahead.
