Reviewing The Bills 2024 Offseason, One Year Later (Plus, Cook Reports)

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss a handful of Buffalo Bills topics, including an examination of their 2024 offseason one year later and the never ending saga of James Cook this offseason. It's been an eventful offseason for Brandon Beane and company since losing to Kansas City in the AFC title game this past January. Rather than focusing on that today the guys are going back a ful year to review how the 2024 offseason went. They reflect on and discuss some of the Bills biggest moves, including the re-signings of David Edwards, AJ Epenesa and Taylor Rapp, contract extensions for Dion Dawkins, Taron Johnson and Spencer Brown, signing Curtis Samuel and the draft selections of Keon Coleman, Cole Bishop and Ray Davis. As for Cook, how his contract and Cook's participation with the Bills plays out this season remains mysterious as the Bills begin mandatory minicamp this week but it's certainly a step in the right direction that he reported for minicamp. Matt and Patrick wonder who may blink first if push comes to shove this summer at training camp and potentially into the regular season. That plus some commentary on head coach Sean McDermott and plenty more. You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattRichWarren and be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblings for your (really good) daily Bills content.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss a handful of Buffalo Bills and NFL topics, including a list of the biggest surprises that've happened with the Bills this offseason as training camp's now just a handful of weeks away. How things play out obviously remains to be seen but one thing's for certain when it comes to the Bills---it's been an eventful offseason. The guys talk about some of the more surprising things we've seen in depth, including the James Cook contract situation becoming a very public hot topic, not having any real interest in retaining popular receiver Mack Hollins, Brandon Beane signing four significant veterans to long term extensions before free agency even began, the Bills being named as the subject for HBO's Hard Knocks this summer and Beane taking a big swing on a one-year deal for defensive edge rusher Joey Bosa, who's already got a calf injury while training. Also, the Bosa injury and other factors could make this a very important season for veteran edge rusher AJ Epenesa. The guys discuss why and if we should realistically expect anything more from Epenesa than we have in the past. That plus is there any chance that a Buffalo return Von Miller could be in the cards and much more. You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattRichWarren and be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblingsfor your (really good) daily Bills content.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. That's evidenced by Buffalo being the only team in the league to be favored in every game this season as things stand. That doesn't mean the team is without flaws and concerns. The guys examine which positional group is currently giving them the most reason for concern as they get ready for training camp in July.Plus in news that broke shortly before the taping of this show, Bills defensive end Joey Bosa has a calf injury already. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss several Buffalo Bills and NFL topics, including a look at eight pretty significant talking points about the Buffalo Bills from last season that Patrick feels have mostly flown under the radar.Josh Allen finally won his first MVP and firmly established himself as one of the faces of the league. The Bills again fell short in their quest for a Super Bowl appearance after losing to Kansas City in the playoffs, again. Brandon Beane spent heavily on the defense and clearly let everyone know he feels about the wide receiver position. These and some others are predominant talking points that've remained as such over the past few months. But there's some things from season, both good and bad that are still tugging at Patrick a little bit that he wants to discuss with Matt. Among them is an incredible offensive line that played a huge role in Allen getting sacked just 14 times in 17 games. There's also the absolute Buffalo dominance of the AFC east, evidenced by their 24-6 record against the division over their last 30 games. Also, Dorian Williams took a major step in his second year at linebacker, to the point Patrick feels solid about him if he has to start again.Conversely, Patrick thinks offensive coordinator Joe Brady has been let off the hook a little bit despite his play calling meltdown in the AFC title game. Also, Brandon Beane's offseason defensive line additions crop was generally pretty lousy.Plus, some NFL schedule news as of this recording, media news surrounding two icons of the football broadcasting industry, audio vs video for podcasting and much more. (Approx. 5:55)From there, the guys reflected on the NFL and Eagles Draft, and how the defensive players picked early in the draft is a sheer testament to Howie Roseman trusting Vic Fangio's defense and what is needed for continued success in the NFC. (Approx. 9:50)Then the guys discussed how this is going to be such a critical offseason for the Sixers due to health issues that persist for Joel Embiid, and even more issues that are facing the team. (Approx. 18:50)The guys then gave their thoughts on the Union unexpectedly parting ways with Daniel Gazdag, and what it means for the team. (Approx. 27:05)Then they dove into some Phillies talk and how this team just lack the fun feels early this season. May this be why they're facing some challenges? (Approx. 34:20)What they threw down on the Table this week was a fantastic and in-depth discussion with Ethan Witte from The Good Phight at SB Nation about how this team is facing a number of challenges. From Aaron Nola to Zack Wheeler to the runners in scoring position storyline, the guys discussed the good and bad when it comes to this Phillies 2025 season. All of this and much more this week on the Table! Bills & NFL Biggest Draft Takeaways

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to go over some of their biggest Buffalo Bills and NFL draft takeaways after a handful of days to full digest everything that happened. When it was all said and done, the Bills ended up making nine picks and among them were two trade ups, both for defensive tackles. The guys offer their thoughts on each and how they may fit in and while going into the draft it felt unrealistic every draft pick could make the roster, Patrick actually believes there's a feasible case for each of them to make the team. If nothing else it feels the competition for roster spots in Rochester at training camp this summer should be far livelier than a year ago. Also, the Buffalo sports world is still buzzing over Bills general manager Brandon Beane's fiesty appearance on WGR 500 Monday morning when he blasted cohosts Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase for complaining that the Bills haven't done enough at wide receiver. It's led to strong reaction on both sides of the fence from fans and the guys offer their opinions on that.Speaking of wide receiver, Matt offers his take on if people are sleeping on free agent signee Josh Palmer and if the team has done enough to address the depth at the position. That plus several takeaways on the draft hauls for teams around the league, including the AFC east and plenty more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren (SB Nation) to examine how the present and the future of the Buffalo Bills is looking, positionally. With the NFL Draft barely a week away, the Bills will be adding prospects to the roster that general manager Brandon Beane is counting on helping them get over the AFC hump. Defense obviously feels like the bigger need, especially considering Josh Allen just won MVP and the vast majority of the offense is back from last year. Still, the draft isn't just about one season and the guys start to go through the team position-by-position to determine where priorities could be beyond just the upcoming 2025 season.More specifically the guys talk about wide receiver being a position of interest because Beane can get out of Curtis Samuel's contract after this year. Also, Dion Dawkins is one of the game's best left tackles but at 31 years old, do you start considering grooming a replacement for when he skills inevitably decline. Also, the Bills have four NFL caliber safeties but two are signed for just one year and another a guy Buffalo can easily financially move on from in 2026 if they desire.Matt also has thoughts on what he considers the most intriguing things about this draft, the New Orleans Saints quarterback situation and much more. Primary Buffalo Bills Concerns (As Things Stand Now)

Moran-Alytics Podcast

On  this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nations to discuss several Buffalo Bills topics, including an examination on some of the primary reasons for concerns when it comes to the 2025 Bills as things currently stand.Don't want to get this twisted---this is not a pile on the Buffalo Bills for any and all of their perceived shortcomings with the intention of being negative episodes. In fact, the guys go out of their way to praise Brandon Beane and staff and what appears to be a really solid offseason balance of locking up core players for the long term while investing free agent dollars in areas of need, particularly on the defensive line. The Bills are poised to be in the mix for an AFC championship yet again this season and for good reason---it's a very well put together roster with a lot of strengths, none so more than the MVP quarterback. However, that doesn't mean this is roster without flaws or least question marks around it and both Patrick and Matt put on their critically objective hats and discuss several of them, including what appears to be a pretty big leap of faith that Keon Coleman will grow into a very good wide receiver in his second year, the boundary cornerback position looking razor thin (again, as things stand) and a safety room that least Patrick isn't ready to start believing in.They also wonder how much, if at all the James Cook contract situation could be an issue come training camp in July and if it'll resolve itself or become a New York Jets 2024 Haasan Reddick situation in the worse case. That plus are the Bills doing enough to help Josh Allen be great, will Miami star receiver Tyreek Hill actually end up getting traded, thoughts on Cam Ward very likely being the number one overall pick and much more. You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattRichWarren and be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblingsfor your (really good) daily Bills content.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red'sat 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren (SB Nation) for their weekly chat with the focus today on a handful of sneaky positional draft needs for the Buffalo Bills in addition to a handful of interesting potential Buffalo trade up options and where packaging some picks can get them up to.Cornerback, edge rusher and defensive tackle are three big needs and (very) likely to be addressed early in the draft—possibly even their first three selections. However, there's other positions on this team that could definitely use some reinforcing with both this season and the future in mind. The guys talk about why tight end could be a little more of a priority than most think despite already having both Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox on the team. Also, an interior lineman doesn't have a real path to playing time as a rookie but that doesn't mean a solid mid round prospect can't become impactful as soon as 2026. They also discuss linebacker, running back and even punter as possiblities. Also, the Bills currently hold pick 30 in the first round and two in the second, 56 and 62. Buffalo can stay patient and get three guys that fall to them—or Patrick lays out several scenarios using the latest 2025 draft value chart to demonstrate where the Bills can realistically move up for a prospect(s) without necessarily giving up the farm.Plus, plenty of reaction from everything going on at the Owner's Meetings this week in Florida both from a Bills and league wide perspective. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for their weekly chat, this time focused on counting down the Buffalo Bills players likely to be most instrumental to the team's success this coming season. To make things a little less obvious the guys disqualify Josh Allen from the equation since he's the clear but number one choice. Patrick runs down his list with Matt having insight on each player and if he agrees with where they're placed on the list, and at least a few at or near the top may surprise you.Not on the list are a handful of prominent players and Patrick explains why he doesn't have James Cook, Khalil Shakir or Matt Milano that while important, aren't in his top 10.Also, Matt has some thoughts on Amari Cooper, Von Miller and Rasul Douglas all remaining unsigned this deep into free agency as of this recording. Plus, is it now obvious that the Bills are taking a cornerback high in the draft? That, Stefon Diggs is reportedly running at full speed again, potential NFL surprises this year and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss and assign a grade for each part of the Buffalo Bills offseason through this point in addition to discussing the offseason for some AFC rivals. To say it's been an interesting offseason so far for the Bills may truly be an understatement. Props to anyone who had the Bills signing a Bosa in free agency and multiple defenders who will be suspended to start the season on their bingo cards, but here we are. Matt has plenty of thoughts on the Bills “swinging big” with Joey Bosa while Brandon Beane, rightfully so caught heat for inking Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi to deals despite pending suspensions, the former a situation Beane knew about. That's just a part of an eventful offseason. The Bills also extended three key young core players in addition to the big Josh Allen contract. That's discussed and evaluated as are a few re-signings including Ty Johnson and Damar Hamlin as well as a few more low key adds like Laviska Shenault, Dane Jackson and Darrick Forrest. The guys also evaluate and discuss how the rest of the AFC east has done during this period in addition to the Bengals ponying up for both their star receivers, the Chiefs having a very interesting offseason and plenty more.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss the first three days of free agency for the Buffalo Bills and specifically what's become an overhaul of their defensive line following three significant additions. It wasn't exactly a secret that the Bills were going to look to improve a defensive line that was good at times in 2024 but also floundered too often as well, none more than last year's AFC championship game loss in Kansas City. Bills general manager Brandon Beane took some pretty big steps to try and improve the unit this week, signing Michael Hoecht on Monday before the big one, Joey Bosa on Tuesday and following it up with a third addition on Wednesday morning, Larry Ogunjobi. The guys break down all three moves and discuss what they like and don't like about them, and there's plenty of both on Bosa and Ogunjobi.Beane also addressed safety on Wednesday, bringing back Damar Hamlin on a one-year deal and also signing Darrick Forrest. Patrick thinks Hamlin being back is a reflection of an open market that rejected him, something Matt definitely disagrees with. With these moves plus the signing of Josh Palmer and re-signing of Ty Johnson earlier, it certainly appears the meat and potatoes of the Bills roster is set heading into NFL draft season next. That's with the exception of cornerback. Both guys have thoughts on where this roster stands as well as some reaction to happenings around the NFL and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium.
