Garrett Batty has had a life long love of filmmaking. Starting literally as far back as he can remember. Growing up in Park City, UT, he was exposed to all the classics like “Star Wars” “Back to the Future” and “Indiana Jones” and he wanted to do that. In 2009 he finally got the chance to make his dreams come true with the low budget “Scout Camp” and he never looked back. Creating his own style of faith-based films, Batty crafted some seriously good movies that don't come off religious but more as a good movie with a good story. His latest film “Faith of Angels” had me intrigued with the unbelievable storyline, fantastic acting and sharp directing style that made hooked from the start. Along with Batty, I got the chance to interview Joshua Dennis, the boy (now a man) who gets lost in a cave, presumed dead and miraculously is found! I loved the movie and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Batty's work in the future. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #182 Phil Schreier NRA Museum, Director In my formative years as a gun owner (then just a wanna be), I would watch The Outdoor Channel which had Shooting USA on it, shows on The History Channel, and other shows, too. Any time a historical gun came up, Phil Schreier would be there with his white gloves on handling, talking about various firearms, and giving the history. When I “crashed” the NRA BOD party back in April, I got to introduce myself and tell him what I do. He said anytime I was in Fairfax, VA, he would be up for being on the show. Well, I was planning a roadtrip with John Petrolino, The Pen Patriot, and we made a pit stop at the NRA Museum and I was able to film a show with Phil. Growing up, Phil was in a “Kennedy Democrat” household where firearms were encouraged but they weren't prohibited either. He learned to shoot at Boy Scout camp, like other passengers who have been on the show. He fell in love with shooting the Mossberg .22 rifle. His grandmother told him they were related to General Beauregard, who was a Confederate General in the Civil War. That also sparked an interest in history. Majoring in Political Science and History in college, his first job was as a compliance inspector with the ATF.( Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms…who's bringing the chips?) But he didn't like the way they operated and left the position. Does this sound familiar? So Phil ended up going back to the Boy Scout camp as a counselor then worked up to run the camp. During the winter months, he worked at a cigar shop with a friend who he grew up with. Then he got a call from someone from Scout Camp who was also with the NRA and he offered Phil a job to work weekends at the NRA Museum. He was less than thrilled working weekends because he was also doing some reenacting on the weekends. But he took the gig working 6 hours each weekend day. Within 6 months, he was working full time. Then he was able to hire his buddy from the cigar shop to work with him. For the record, his buddy is Mark Keefe, the Editorial Director of all NRA publications. Certainly the “virus that shall not be named” eliminated nearly all the positions at the museum, and Phil has several of the titles. During the last two and a half years, he was the only one working there. There's much more to running a museum than just “playing” with the guns. Phil will go weeks working there without even touching one of the firearms. Like many jobs that look glamorous, working as a museum director has aspects that have become less glamorous over the years. The lectures at various museums don't get old, but traveling does. I've heard several traveling comedians say they'd do comedy for free, but they get paid to travel. What I really enjoyed learning about was how manufacturing helped change the way things were produced. We talk about the Eli Whitney and the cotton gin, but what Whitney really brought about was mass production and being able to make replaceable parts for machines. Then that spilled into Sam Colt making revolvers. We also talked about the impact of AI on history and writing. Phil said his personal book collection is over 5,000 books! There's really a lot to learn from people like Phil. He's got a lot of wisdom. But he's also still the youngest guy at some of the history conventions. If we don't want out history to die or be erased, we need more people like Phil who has a love of the stories and shares them in ways we all enjoy. Favorite quotes: “Very upset with the way they (ATF) operated as stewards of public trust.” “It doesn't matter if we're (ATF) right or wrong, we'll just bankrupt them.” “I think the biggest misconception is you get to play with guns all day.” “It's stuff like that that changes the world because of firearms.” “I look at it as having more friends and the effort of spreading the knowledge about firearms, their history, their heritage.” NRA Museum Website https://www.nramuseum.org/ There's 3 different NRA museums around the country. Social intrigue begins early. There are always the popular ones, the bullies, and the things we don't want to do that others think are "good for us." This is the story of how I "got to" go to Scout camp where the first thing I "got to" do was dig a latrine. Things went downhill from there.
The Girl Scout Murders occurred in 1977 in Mayes County Oklahoma at a campsite called Camp Scott - in the wee hours of June 13, 1977 three little girls were raped and murdered when they were supposed to be out having a fun summer and meeting new friends, climbing trees and collecting badges for the Girl Scouts - what happened was the stuff nightmares are made from.Lori Farmer, Michele Guse, and Doris Denise Milner each have their own story and the Right Shoe goes from the beginning to the end of a tragedy that should have never have happened, also one that technically remains "Unsolved"
The church described early in the Book of Acts exemplified caring for all. For them, it meant the sacrifice by those who had much to create equality among the whole community.
June 11, 2008 marks the tragic loss of 4 teenagers at a Boy Scout camp near Little Sioux, Iowa; 48 more were injured. The tragedy struck at the 1,800-acre camp about an hour north of downtown Omaha. An EF3 tornado, with 145 mph winds, descended on the remote camp, striking and leveling a cabin where campers had sought shelter as warnings of the storm circulated through the camp. A chimney at the cabin collapsed, sending heavy concrete blocks onto the Scouts. This was the worst of the storms that hit the Northern Plains that day. There were also two farms damaged from two different tornadoes, one near Spencer, Iowa and the other near Springfield, Minnesota. A nursing home was also damaged by a tornado in southern Salina, Kansas. There were over 300 reports of severe weather across the nation with 64 of those reports from tornado activity. There had been no basement or in-ground shelter at the camp when the tornado hit. The following year, the Boy Scouts Mid-America Council launched a major fundraising campaign to build emergency shelters at all of its camps. By 2013, two tornado shelters had been built at the camp, and a siren was added. The new structures have concrete walls, steel shutters and doors and emergency power backup, and were built to withstand an EF5 tornado.' See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A case that haunts me to this day. Maybe because I was a girl scout and camp was such a rite of passage for a girl. This is still an open case. Part 1 takes you through the night of the murder until the discovery and the police being called.
In episode four of the Springfield Three, we start to delve into the leading theories that emerge. We'll talk about a group of men who were arrested for stealing gold fillings out of corpses' mouths in a local cemetery—one of whom was dating Suzie. We'll talk about a boy who tells the haunting story of seeing the women in what locals called “The Girl Scout Camp.” It's a story that would haunt him for the rest of his life. We'll talk about the van—an infamous piece of information in this case. And we'll talk about the theory that the women are buried underneath a parking lot, one that still continues to ripple throughout the town nearly 30 years later. Angelika Graswald and her fiance, Vincent Viafore, loved going on adventures. On a Sunday in April of 2015, they strapped two kayaks to the top of Vincent’s Jeep and headed for the Hudson River. They planned to kayak over to Pollepel Island, where they’d see the Bannerman Castle ruins. But there were a few big obstacles in their way. The water was cold. Their kayaks weren’t suited for the river. Vincent didn’t wear a life vest. On top of all that, the weather that evening was predicted to take a turn for the worst. On their way back across the river, Vincent’s kayak capsized. Later, Angelika’s statements to detectives had people asking whether this was a tragic accident or a calculated murder. Then Brandi tells us the heartbreaking story of three violent murders at an Oklahoma girl scout camp. In the summer of 1977, Doris Milner, 10, Lori Farmer, 8, and Michelle Guse, 9, shared a tent. Everything seemed normal on the night of June 12, but early the next morning, a camp counselor discovered a grizzly scene. The girls’ dead bodies had been piled together on a trail. The crime stunned and terrified the nation. Police soon captured a man named Gene Leroy Hart. But did they have the right guy? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Murder by kayak?” episode of 20/20 “Woman pleads guilty in fiance’s kayak death on Hudson River,” New York Times “‘Who’s Miranda?’ Suspect in kayak killing didn’t understand her rights, lawyer says,” New York Times “A kayak trip on the Hudson, ending in death and an arrest,” New York Times “Murder charge for woman who said fiance’s kayak capsized in Hudson River,” New York Times “Woman convicted in fiance’s death entitled to portion of his life insurance,” CBS News In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Girl Scout Murders | June 13, 1977” by Tim Stanley, Tulsa World “Girl Scout murders in Oklahoma remain unsolved 40 years after tragedy” by Juliana Keeping and Brianna Bailey, The Oklahoman “Gene Leroy Hart Is Found Innocent In Sex Slayings of Three Girl Scouts” by Jim Bradshaw, The Washington Post “40 Years After 3 Girl Scouts Were Killed at Camp, Police Hope DNA Will Reveal Their Killer” by Jeff Truesdell and Christine Pelisek, People Magazine “The Troubling, Still-Unsolved Case of the 1977 Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders” by Cheryl Eddy, Gizmodo

Camp Nooteeming in Pleasant Valley has been serving the scouting community for 91 years, but newly arrived Scout Executive/CEO for the Hudson Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, David Horton, recognized that the Camp is in serious need of renovation to become a resident camp. Volunteer Dave Petrovich has taken charge of the project. Together for a joint interview on RadioRotary, they describe plans to set up camping centers for specific topics, events, and skills, including centers devoted to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics); shooting sports; the environment; crafts; and more. Scouts, including Cub Scouts as young as age 5 and Girl Scouts, will use the renovated facilities along with other community groups. In an interesting sidelight, Program Co-Host Jonah Triebwasser tells about how Rotary and scouting have been linked since the earliest days of both service organizations. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

You'll meet a lot of people at a Jamboree or a Scout Camp. Why not trade them for a memento?Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast Topic(s)Ken and Colin talk about one of the time-honoured traditions of Scout Camps and international events (such as Jamborees): badge trading. And not just badge trading, but necker trading, and even uniform trading. Trading another Scout for a memento of your meeting, such as a badge or a necker, can be a very rewarding and enriching experience when at a Jamboree...as long as it's a fair trade.Shout-OutsA big shout-out this week to Chris, Brad, and Jos from BioWare, who graciously volunteered their time to come and discuss (board) game design with the Beaver Scout groups that Ken leads.MusicGalizur, by John Zorn & The Dreamers
What programs are available, in Scouts Canada and Boy Scouts of America, for older youth and young adults?Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast TopicKen, Colin, and Ted were saddened to learn that their once and former Rover Den — a cabin on Lake Wabamun in Alberta that, as members of the 59th Greenfield/Royal Gardens Rover Crew, they had come to know as their own and cherished as a special place to retreat to — had been burned to the ground to make space for more campsites for the Scout Camp within which it had been located. But out of this, a discussion emerged about the differences between what sorts of programs Scouts Canada has for youth and young adults in the 17+ age range, and what programs Boy Scouts of America has for the same demographic; Brian joined the discussion to fill us in on the latter. Note: Our apologies for the noisy audio quality of some segments of this episode. This video was recorded during the July 6, 2014, opening campfire. This will be the first of a few videos filmed during the campfire that will be posted to the Melrose Scout Productions Podcast. As you can see when you watch this, this year’s staff was pumped to start working with a new week of Boy Scout campers. This video features the staff introductions and the singing of the Many Point Rouser. As all “repeat after me” songs, it gets pretty loud and rowdy by the end.
After nearly twenty years of research and a thousands of hours of work by an army of state editors tonight its here - The Camp Book II. This is the definitive guide to collecting Boy Scout camps written by Bob Sherman, Dave Minnihan and Kevin Doyle. Covering a full 1,000 pages this historical reference guide is probably among the most important works in preserving Boy Scout history on a national level. Many of the details of early Scout council and camp history were lost to time until research from this team preserved it. Tonight on the show Bob Sherman will share the story of how this two decade project finally came together in 2012. He will recount the story of the original Camp Book in 1993 and how that 200 page guide has been exponentially expanded and improved for this 21st century edition. Anyone interested in purchasing the book will also be glad to know that live on the show we will announce the official launch of the book and it will go live for sale at http://www.scoutinghotfinds.com and also on eBay. The MPSC Rouser Song is this week's Melrose Scouting Productions Podcast (MSPP) video. The staff begins each week's Sunday night opening campfire with this song which sets the tone for the rest of the evening. It is fast. It is loud. It is energetic. It is rowdy. It is everything a good opening campfire song should be.
In this video the staff of Many Point Scout Camp pay tribute to the largest American legend of all time, Paul Bunyan.
