If you have sharp eyes or good binoculars, you can sometimes see double in the night sky – two stars that are quite close together. In some cases, the stars really are close – they can be bound to each other by gravity, forming a binary. In other cases, though, it’s just a coincidence. The stars are unrelated, but they just happen to line up in the same direction. These stars are known as optical doubles. And some of them are beautiful sights – especially when viewed through a telescope. The two members can show different colors, providing a nice contrast. One of the best-known examples is Albireo. It marks the head of Cygnus, the swan, and it’s high overhead at nightfall. A small telescope reveals one blue star and one gold star. The best measurements to date indicate that the stars are about 30 light-years apart. An example that’s visible to the eye alone is Algedi, in Capricornus. It’s due south at nightfall. The eye can just make it out as two separate points of light. The stars are hundreds of light-years apart. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if a double star is a binary or not. The best example is Mizar and Alcor, in the handle of the Big Dipper. It’s fairly easy to see the stars as two points of light. They actually move through space together, so they probably were born together. But astronomers aren’t sure if they’re a true binary – or just two related stars moving through space on their own. If you're a listener of the Missing Chapter, you're probably aware that Phil Horender and I are huge action movie fans. I mean, how can you beat Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, The Rock, The Fugitive, the Terminator - just to name a few of our many favorites. The best action movies in my opinion, though, are the ones where the actors or actresses do their own stunts. Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Jackie Chan, Charlize Theron, once again, just to name a few. And why is it that we're surprised that these actors and actresses do their own stunts? It's because it's normal that most don't do their own stunts - they have stunt doubles. Well, wouldn't we be ignorant to assume that only happens in movies? I mean, it wouldn't happen anywhere else in our crazy world, right? Like, I don't know, political figure heads? Yeah, you're picking up my sarcasm and I hope you're picking up your cup of coffee because the Phils are back with another Season 5 episode of the Missing Chapter. For decades, the sale of single songs was dominant in the music industry. Singles are still popular, and in the age of streaming, single plays make up the bulk of how most people listen to music. Not a lot has changed since radio was dominant in terms of single songs that become hits. However, with the firehose of music at our fingertips, finding standout single songs that aren't from the pantheon of superstars who dominate streaming and album sales can be a challenge. What are some of your favorite singles? Sometimes, a single song remains happily lodged in your head and its lyrics, its melodies, and its whole vibe take up a large part of your mental real estate. So much so, that you may find yourself whistling the tune, or bursting out into song from time to time. In this episode, Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo talks to and features music from two artists whose singles have really made an impression. First up is Allie Sandt, the former member of Seeing Double whose track "Bygones" made waves on Ted's Top 10 list back in 2022. Now embarking on a solo career, Allie shares her latest creation, "The Flood," which debuted on April 5th, 2024. Written when Allie was just 17, "The Flood" has undergone multiple iterations with various musicians, ultimately culminating in a version that Allie finds deeply fulfilling creatively. Then, we turn our attention to indie sensation Ward White, whose upcoming album "Here Come the Dowsers" is set for release on May 17th, 2024. However, it's the lead single "Continuity" that's been generating buzz in the music scene. Ward joins Ted to discuss the evolving landscape of the music industry and delves into the intricate characters and themes woven into "Continuity." Through this song, Ward offers a poignant exploration of the gritty realities lurking beneath the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

Danger comes in pairs in this week's quartet old time radio mysteries involving identical twins and dopplegangers. First, a gangster uses a lookalike drifter to create an "Alibi for Murder" on The Mollé Mystery Theatre (originally aired on NBC on March 22, 1946). Next, a pair of twin foals leads to a plot to fix races in "The Big Gamble" from The Whistler (originally aired on CBS on October 3, 1948). Finally, we'll hear Bob Bailey in two shows. First, he's George Valentine in Hawaii investigating a case of twin sister trouble in "Journey Into Hate" from Let George Do It (originally aired on Mutual on February 21, 1949), and then he's Johnny Dollar looking for a missing heir in "The Twisted Twin Matter" (originally aired on CBS on August 21, 1960).
Poet and critic Robert B. Shaw earned a BA from Harvard University, where he studied with Robert Lowell, and a PhD from Yale University. Influenced by Elizabeth Bishop and Philip Larkin, Shaw's wry and plainspoken formal verse is often grounded in, or sprung from, the debris of daily life. He is the author of several collections of poetry, including Solving For X (2002), which won the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize; Below the Surface (1999); and The Wonder of Seeing Double (1988). His criticism appears widely in such places as the New York Times Book Review, and he has also published a critical study of poets John Donne and George Herbert, The Call of God: The Theme of Vocation in the Poetry of Donne and Herbert (1981). Shaw has received Shenandoah's James Boatwright III Prize for Poetry as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ingram Merrill Foundation.
