Are you a parent who has been searching for answers to why your child is struggling academically? Have you been told that your child needs strabismus surgery or patching, and it just doesn’t feel right to you? Are you trying to set your kiddo with sensory needs up for success and feeling lost in the process? Have you suffered a brain injury or concussion and refuse to accept that these current limitations are your permanent “new normal My name is Dr. Juanita Collier and I am a Behavioral Optometrist with a private practice specializing in Vision Therapy, Rehabilitation, and Development. Through diving deep with my team, parents, patients, and professionals, we will uncover that vision may be the underlying cause of real life challenges in academics, work, sports, and daily life. While we often think 20/20 eyesight is perfect vision, vision actually takes place in the brain. And if there is any disconnect, any slight lack of coordination between the brain and the eyes, how you see what’s in front of you can be remarkably different than what’s actually there. Through this podcast, you will discover, that the challenges that you are facing may actually be stemming from a difficulty with how you’re seeing…It Could Be Your Eyes.

Have you noticed a shift in how children develop, socialize, and perceive the world around them? Today we discuss the pressing issues raised in Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation".We explore the profound ways in which the digital age and evolving parenting styles are impacting childhood and adolescence. A key concern is the detrimental impact of screen time on children's visual systems, potentially leading to issues like accommodative spasms and increased nearsightedness. We contrast today's screen-saturated lives with the unstructured outdoor play of previous generations, where children naturally developed crucial social skills such as conflict resolution, turn-taking, and risk assessment.Parental anxiety and a fear of unsupervised play have led to more indoor time and structured activities for children. Ironically, while real-world interactions are often heavily monitored, children are frequently left unsupervised in the digital realm, where they can interact with unknown individuals through games and social platforms. We're well aware that community support in establishing healthy boundaries around screens and outdoor activities is vital. We definitely recommend reading "The Anxious Generation" to gain a deeper understanding of these critical issues and to consider how communities can collectively address the challenges of raising children in the digital age.(00:00) Intro(00:34) "The Anxious Generation" and Its Local Impact(01:39) The Detrimental Effects of Screen Use on Child Development(03:05) From Outdoor Independence to Indoor Safety Concerns(11:23) The Paradox of Overprotection: Real World vs. Online World(16:03) Screen Time: Addiction, Academic Needs, and Finding Balance(20:56) Reclaiming Childhood: Prioritizing Real-World Skills and Unstructured PlayCheck out our Digital Programs4D Built for LifeStart your FREE TRIAL today 4D Built to Read Digital ProgramConcussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. In today's episode, we explore the critical differences between various types of eye exams and why the traditional ones often miss issues affecting children's learning and development. A key question in today's discussion is, why do children rarely report visual problems? We often assume their vision is normal, but the implications this has for diagnosis and treatment are very important. The significance of behavioral optometry in detecting and addressing subtle yet impactful vision disorders early on is crucial. We try to shed a light on common compensations for vision issues, the importance of foundational visual skills, and the profound impact that comprehensive vision care can have on a child's academic performance and confidence.Remember that our 4D Built to Read program is designed to empower parents as junior vision therapists for their children. Today we have a "minisode" to celebrate the beginning of 2024. The new year already brings a new and exciting program: 4D Built to Learn. It was developed to make vision training accessible to families all over the world. By enjoying the exciting exercises and games on a regular basis, you'll notice improved reading stamina and comprehension, reduced headaches and car-sickness, and better sports performance for your child. 4D Built to Learn works by strengthening the neural pathways related to vision. This not only improves visual skills but also enhances cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and problem-solving. If you've noticed that your bright child is struggling more than necessary for mediocre grades, it could be related to their eyes! Things you may notice include: Poor reading comprehension Frequent reversals of numbers, letters, or words when reading and writing Headaches Car or motion sickness Blurry vision up close or far away Words or pictures appear to "swim" on the page. Poor sports performance Difficulty paying attention to one task for more than 15 minutes. Clumsiness or frequent bumping into objects or people In this episode you'll hear about:(00:00) Intro(01:38) What is 4D Built to Learn and who's it for?(03:08) How the program works(04:49) www.4dvisiontherapyathome.comRead the episode transcript here Check out our other Digital Programs4d Built to Read Digital Program Concussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. "We love OTs working on visual perception, and they can even do some free space depth perception and focusing flexibility exercises. However, anything farther than that? You're going to want to consult your friendly local neighborhood behavioral optometrist, and especially if they happen to have a certified optometric vision therapist working on staff with them, as myself".Today, Jessica Liedke discusses the differences between occupational therapy and vision therapy. While occupational therapy aims to help individuals live independently by retraining everyday skills, concentration, memory, among other things, vision therapists specialize in visual outcomes and causes for developmental delays. Although occupational therapists have some training in visual skills, they lack the licensures to use optometric tools like lenses and prisms that vision therapists rely on. Collaboration between OT's and VT's is definitely important for comprehensive treatment. In this episode you'll hear about:(01:08) What is Occupational Therapy? She addresses the misconceptions and criticisms surrounding vision therapy and emphasizes the significant benefits it can provide. Jessica highlights the various success stories and research studies that support the effectiveness of vision therapy in improving reading stamina, comprehension, visual acuity, sports performance, and overall quality of life. She also explains the importance of setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely (SMART) goals in vision therapy and the need for active participation and commitment from patients. The psychological aspect of vision therapy and how fear or resistance to change can impact progress is a crucial matter. Today we discuss strabismus, an eye turn condition. We explain the various treatment options, including patching, penalization, surgery, and vision therapy and highlight the importance of developing binocular vision. We also cover the social and psychological impact of strabismus, the goals of treatment, and the considerations parents should make when deciding between surgery and vision therapy for their kids. There's a great need for the two eyes to work together when treating strabismus and there are various aspects of visual function that should be considered, such as tracking skills, focusing power, depth perception, and processing abilities. The role of vision therapy in addressing these areas and improving overall visual performance is crucial. To honor National Vision and Learning Month, we're discussing the importance of getting a comprehensive eye exam for children before the start of the school year, like the one we offer, which targets many areas and skills that your family eye doctor usually does not cover. These are necessary for academic and sports success, including depth perception, coordination of both eyes, and visual processing skills. We also discuss the impact of screen time on visual development and offer tips for parents to help improve their child's visual skills. “We wanted our patients to feel like nothing was wrong with them. From day one we didn't call them patients, they were members. Over the next 10 years, I see vision therapy being the household name and Built to Read being what people know.” Today we're celebrating our 10th anniversary, and as part of it, we are reflecting on all that has happened throughout this time, and how our vision of what vision therapy could be has evolved over time. We discuss how we came up with the idea for our unique approach to vision therapy, centered around empowering members to transform their own perception of the world and how they interact with it. We also talk about the importance of educating parents on the foundational skills necessary for reading, which we believe has been a key component of our success. It's interesting how our perspective has shifted over time, from feeling like we had to be the ones to make all the changes in the world, to empowering others to facilitate change themselves with the tools to become self-sufficient and confident. "17 to 34% of what was learned last school year is expected to be lost between May and September."Today we're talking about "The Summer Slide", a term that refers to the documented decrease in reading ability over the summer months, when kids are not being made to read or do homework. To combat this, we've prepared a couple of summer reading programs, to strengthen their visual skills: The 4D Built to Read program is recommended to address foundational visual skills necessary for reading, and the 4D Summer Boot Camp is recommended for those who have already completed vision therapy. The importance of maintaining visual skills to prevent decline and ensure children are ready for the next school year, is crucial...and that's why we're here for. One of the biggest obstacles for parents of children needing vision therapy is figuring out how to get their kids on board to take it seriously. How to do that? Make it FUN. Today we're with Ben Berryman, a COVT (Certified Optometric Vision Therapist) and case manager here at 4D Vision Gym who is also a dad of two. He has worked with members of all ages, kids to adults. In this episode, Ben provides ideas on helping kids understand WHY they're doing what they're doing and relating it back to their everyday lives – namely, things they're interested in, like sports, games, school, art, or superheroes. Whatever will get their attention! If you can get creative and play with your kids in a different way, they're going to enjoy it. An added bonus? You'll get some quality time together. In this episode you'll hear about:The “20-20-20” rule – every 20 minutes, while working on a screen, look away to something 20 feet away for 20 secondsWays to make therapy fun: make it a competition; make it a challenge; make it a game; turn it into something kids are interested in (for example, role-playing as superheroes)How family game nights (particularly with games that involve fine motor control, like Operation, or visual memory, like UNO) can reinforce vision therapy in a positive wayMaking exercises easier (breaking exercises up; doing exercises sitting instead of standing) and harder (alter lighting; add sensory stimulation; enhance speed)The impact role reversal can have on vision therapy exercises, giving children the instructor role, and thus, the power in the relationshipThe importance of kids feeling safe and comfortable when trying something new – which could be accomplished by taking some unpredictability out of these exercisesResources & LinksFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/4Dvisiongym) and Instagram (@4dvisiongymvt) for the latest news and updates. One of the big questions parents ask us: Is it normal when my child … ?And it's not just in our office. We hear it in school hallways, at gymnastics class, everywhere. We visit with renowned Behavioral Optometrist, Dr. Robert Fox, OD, FCOVD, to talk about the “growing field” of light therapy, also known as Syntonics (once you better understand what that is, you'll see how that's a funny pun!). Takeaways from today's episode:-Syntonic light therapy is a subset of vision therapy that uses light to access the brain's use of the visual field and balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems-Concussion survivors, stroke patients, children with learning difficulties, and individuals with developmental delays may all be viable candidates for Syntonic treatment -Syntonics and Neuro-optometric Vision Therapy treatments can be combined for soothing and impactful results Mentioned in this episode: -The College of Syntonic Optometry: http://wwwcsovision.org/-Dr. Robert Fox, Fox Vision Development Center: https://www.foxvisiondevelopment.com/team/dr-robert-fox-o-d-fcovd/-Web MD article: What is Syntonic Phototherapy? https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/what-is-syntonic-phototherapyFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/4Dvisiongym) and Instagram (@4dvisiongymvt) for the latest news and updates. Kim is a second grade teacher and mom to two children. When her eldest was struggling with learning to read, she was reminded of a past student with similar challenges, and decided to look deeper into what was the cause of, and solution to, her problem. Today, she has helped identify visual issues in many of her students, and has learned how to adapt the classroom environment for their and all students' success. Takeaways from today's episode:-Teachers are not trained to identify the “red flags” of when vision may be impeding student learning, but most are open to interventions that help their students succeed-School screenings may not be required by law to screen every child in every grade, and often miss the most common visual issues that impact learning-The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated many childrens' visual issues and created new challenges in teaching, reading, learning, and the classroom as a whole-The kinds of reading errors your child makes matter- some are more indicative of a visual issue than othersMentioned in this episode: -Progression of Myopia in School-aged Children After COVID-19 Home Confinement: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaophthalmology/fullarticle/2774808?guestAccessKey=a2ef3982-7575-4e41-9052-657ed0e2f8bf&utm_source=silverchair&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=article_alert-jamaophthalmology&utm_content=olf&utm_term=011421-What All Great Leaders Have in Common: https://www.n2growth.com/the-learning-ceo/-How Many Books Does the Average American Read Per Year?: https://katiecouric.com/culture/book-guide/how-many-books-do-americans-read-per-year/Follow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/4Dvisiongym) and Instagram (@4dvisiongymvt) for the latest news and updates.
