But the highest forms of self-care actually cost nothing and can also extend to your relationships and interactions with others. Be mindful of the language you use with others and yourself. Every time you find the urge to tell someone to calm down or react negatively to being told this line, try using the “feel, felt, found” technique. It's about what you “feel” the person is feeling at the moment, what you “felt” about it, and what actions you “found” you can both take to assess and solve the situation. Expressing Yourself with Compassion When you're frustrated, it's difficult to respond to situations compassionately. We aggressively react most of the time because of the underlying fear, which may prevent us from acting wisely. For Rosie, one of the ultimate ideas for self-care is expressing yourself fully. Suppressing your feelings due to fear of losing control or exhaustion is harmful because you might develop an unhealthy relationship with self-expression. Acknowledging someone's feelings immediately diffuses the situation. The Danger of “But” When you use ”but” in a sentence, you negate everything that came before that. Try changing “but” into a different word, such as “and”. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. Use your words mindfully instead of lashing out at people. Responding with Empathy When Tessa notices someone getting upset, she tries to respond with empathy and acknowledgment. Try putting yourself in another person's shoes. It's easy to simply attack someone for not sharing the same opinions and beliefs, but it's necessary to work on bettering our relationships to create a ripple effect. Changing the world starts from home. It's where we learn how to form relationships. Moving On and Embracing Change Moving forward and not being stuck in the past is one of the best ideas for self-care. Living in the present allows you to create new habits and improve yourself and your relationships. In relationships, don't use the words “never” and “always”. These trap people in their past selves and creates an obstacle for change. We're all constantly changing, and accepting change comes with treasuring your people. Choosing What To Say and How To Say Them Be more conscious of the language and communication style you use with others. Though it might be unintentional, using “never” and “always” can come off as dismissive and judgmental. Also, remember that it's not always necessarily about what you're saying, but how you're saying it. So, pay attention to your body language and non-verbal communication. Choosing to speak mindfully can help you become a better communicator. Remember to Press Pause Stepping away from a situation can diffuse it and help you calm down. It's best to do something else to collect yourself and return to a charged conversation at a later time. Not many people realize this, but pausing and reflecting are the greatest acts and ideas for self-care. Misconceptions About Self-Care Tessa's friend thinks that self-care is something she has to do. Self-care is somehow commercialized as though it could be bottled up into products. But self-care isn't something that you can buy; it is something you already are, and you are capable of attaining on your own. Crucial Ideas for Self-Care It's essential to be consistent in caring for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. Build self-care into your day and take a pause. Also, express yourself clearly and compassionately. Self-sabotage is how we hurt ourselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, and keep ourselves from achieving our plans, goals, and dreams. Many, if not all of us, have sabotaged ourselves in one way or another. But the good news is, we can overcome sabotaging behaviors, it just takes self-awareness and effort. There are five common self-sabotaging behaviors that we need to be on the lookout for. Negative self talk When you make a mistake or fail at something, what does your self-talk sound like in your head? Do you build yourself up or do you tear yourself down. A lot of us struggle with negative self-talk, the voice in your head that says “you’re dumb, how could you do that” or “you will never be able to figure this out”. It is easy to default to this kind of talk, but if you don’t work to overcome this it can hold you back and keep you from success. No one is going to be your #1 cheerleader in life but you. If you struggle with this it is important to be aware of it and every time you realize you are thinking something negative, change it and be positive. It’s also important to surround yourself with the right people. What are the people around you saying about you? Do they encourage you and support you and build you up? Or are they always negative and pessimistic? Another thing to be aware of is how you spend your free time. If you are spending hours on social media comparing yourself to others, you may want to redirect your focus to something like reading a book or meditating or going for a walk. You have to be as loving to yourself as you are to the people in your life that you love and care about. How do you talk to your kids, or your spouse, or your best friend? Now, this doesn’t mean you have to be positive, happy, and full of joy 100% of the time. There are times when we all feel down or upset about something, but it is crucial that we pay attention to how we are talking to ourselves. Procrastination Another big self-sabotaging behavior is procrastination. You cannot produce great work if you always wait until the last minute to get things done. Waiting until the last minute also causes you to have unnecessary stress and anxiety. A lot of times we tend to start our days getting the easiest things done first and we put off the more difficult projects. But actually it should be the other way around. Use the beginning of your day to attack the hard things so that in the afternoon, when most of us tend to crash, you only have easy things left to accomplish. It’s always difficult to get started on something, and a lot of times we let anxiety paralyze us. But if you feel stuck the best thing to do is just take action. Take the first step in completing the task. Lashing Out There are times at work or in your personal life when you feel overwhelmed, stressed out, anxious, tired, etc...and as a result, we lash out at the people around us. I’m sure many of us have experienced this at one point or another over this past year as we have had to work and live at home with our immediate family 24/7 throughout the pandemic. But reacting to people out of anger, whether it’s a co-worker, a boss, or a family member, usually does not end well. And both sides end up hurt and feeling bad. So it is important that we all figure out how to overcome this self-sabotaging behavior. In order to conquer this behavior, it is crucial for us to be in a good place emotionally, mentally, and physically. That means that we need to be getting enough sleep, taking care of our bodies, eating properly and that we have methods to turn to when we get overwhelmed. What works best for you when you are stressed out? Maybe you like to take a walk, or meditate, or talk to a friend, or have some alone time. Whatever it is you need to do to feel more in control, make sure you do that when you feel yourself getting to your breaking point. Perfectionism Some people may view perfectionism as a good thing, but for most people trying to have everything perfect all the time can be debilitating. It can stop you from taking action and it can really hold you back from moving up in your career. It is not possible to have things perfect 100% of the time, we are all human and we have faults. If you don’t allow your work to be submitted until it’s perfect it may never see the light of day. It could cause you to miss deadlines, it can frustrate the rest of your team, and it can take up time that you could be spending on other things. We all want to strive for excellence, but we can’t become obsessed with being perfect. Not only is it impossible, but it makes you less likeable to the people around you. People want to know you are human, that you’re real and down to earth. Mistakes are a part of life, so don’t be terrified of them. Not Standing Up For Yourself There are going to be times in your career when you will need to stand up for yourself. This doesn’t mean you need to get up in people’s faces and cause a big scene. But if someone is criticizing you and making it personal, or if a client is trying to get your rate down to something unreasonable, or you help a coworker out once and then they try to take advantage of your kindness--in these moments you need to stand up for yourself. Business is about relationships, it's about human beings. Most people at your organization are not purposefully trying to hurt you or take advantage of you, but it’s okay to speak up and let them know how what they are doing is making you feel. You also shouldn’t feel bad setting boundaries at work. Whether you can’t attend meetings before 9am or you need to pick up your kids at 4pm--whatever it is speak up and let people know. The key to standing up for yourself is doing it in an artful way and not making it a big argument. Make sure you are being empathetic and you understand where the other person is coming from. And always approach people in a kind, yet firm way. Strategies you can use to overcome self sabotaging behaviors Dr. Alice Boyes, the author of The Healthy Mind Toolkit, wrote an article for The Greater Good Magazine on seven strategies and tips for how you can overcome self-sabotaging behaviors. They are: Know your typical thinking patterns and factor that into your judgment-- For example, if you default to a negative mindset when things happen, take a step back and realize that your default may not be reality Prioritize one-time behaviors that reduce your stress over time--Be consistent in the tactics you use to reduce stress. Don’t just eat healthy for 24 hours or workout once a month. Use heuristics--Have shortcuts in place to help you make decisions quickly Learn to Love Incremental Improvements--You don’t have to completely change overnight, appreciate small gains and improvements. Strategize to Overcome Procrastination--Create processes for yourself so that you don’t avoid things or hide from them. Understanding Seemingly Irrelevant Decisions--Pay attention to the decisions you make, even if they seem small and unimportant. Every decision has an impact on you and the people around you. Practice Acceptance and Self Care--It is important to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Find things that help you in each area, and don’t feel bad about taking time for yourself

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many serious and dangerous challenges for workers everywhere—not just for workers on the job, but for workers trying to exercise their right to organize. But there have also been unexpected bright spots on this front over the past year, including a boom in union drives at nonprofits around the United States. One of those nonprofits is the American Civil Liberties Union, where staff workers recently voted to unionize with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). Network: Connect with others Have you been cooped up too long? It’s time to get out from behind the computer and meet some other humans! Specifically, your guides want to help you to connect with other like-minded people who believe in what you’re doing. Join a mentorship or a mastermind with other individuals you admire. If you don’t have a mentor this is a great time to get one. Follow your heart but don’t be afraid to invest in this network. Remember, you’re the sum of the people you spend the most time with. You deserve incredible friendships and relationships. Is it time to release some old relationships that don’t serve you anymore? Upgrade your lightworker tribe and go have fun! ​ ​ 32. Order: It’s all coming together. Trust in divine timing and divine outcome. If you’re worried about how things are going to work out, or what are the next steps, let all that go now. You need to let go of trying to control everything so much and allow your guidance to come to help you. What if by letting go, an even better outcome could happen? Your way may not be the only way. You’re getting intuitive hits; quit questioning them so much and simply take action in alignment. ​ 12. The mantra for you right now is: “The more self-love I give, the more money I’ll make.” This is a non-negotiable! Do you get this card a lot? Think of it as a loving dope-slap from spirit. Take the hint before you get sick. ​ ​ 18. Gratitude: Give thanks for all you have Give thanks to all that IS and all that is coming. If you’ve been complaining about lack, now is the time to shift that energy into gratitude. Did you know that gratitude and abundance are connected? One does not appear without the other. Take a minute to write down 5 things you’re thankful for right now, 5 things you’re thankful for that are coming in the future and 5 things you’re grateful for from your past. Practice connecting into your heart center at bedtime, and imagine you’re sending love and light out to all of those places. This practice is especially helpful during the launch period. The faster you can connect to your own purpose and values, the sooner you can implement them in your business as well. Once you have both of those, then you can attract a team that totally upholds those values as well. Quit getting annoyed at others who don’t “get it” when you haven’t made yourself clear. Make your expectations known. Be as direct as possible, no giving hints. People can’t read your mind. This is about taking full responsibility for yourself and your business. Are you dealing with a troubling situation? If you were the best in your field at what you do, how would you handle this situation right now? No additional education is required for private practice owners who wish to niche down to this specialty. Janeen also talks about the importance of self-care for parents with autistic children and where parents can seek support. Later, Janeen describes the inspiration behind her podcast, Autism Blueprint, and how she utilizes self-disclosure in her practice. Meet Janeen Herskovitz Janeen Herskovitz is a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Florida and owner of Puzzle Peace Counseling, LLC. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Special Education from Rowan University in New Jersey (1995) and her Masters of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University (2010). She has been married to her husband, Joe, since 1995, and together, they have two young-adult children. Janeen's private practice, Puzzle Peace Counseling, is located in Ponte Vedra, Florida, and helps autism families live more peaceful lives. Her podcast, Autism Blueprint, covers a variety of topics surrounding autism in the home. Working with Autism Spectrum Families You don't need a lot of experience in autism to work with parents who have autistic children. You will need the qualities that you most likely already have like empathy, listening skills, and the understanding that the parent's journey is unique to them. As therapists, we are good at having unconditional positive regard. Clinical things Janeen does are screening for post-traumatic stress disorder because the research shows that PTSD is very prevalent among autism spectrum parents. The diagnosis itself is a traumatic event, and people come into it with their childhood trauma. Self-Care It's so necessary for autism parents to practice self-care. They need to have healthy boundaries in place for themselves, live with intention and practice mindfulness. Autism parents need to lean into their lives and create a new normal. Parents also need to grieve – however, it's a cycle. There never is any closure to their grief. It's difficult nowadays because there are a lot of autistic adults speaking up and saying they don't want anyone feeling bad for them. While this is true, parents still need space to breathe. Seeking Support Janeen always tells parents to ask their child's school first if they have any support groups. Not every school district has this, but they can point the parents in the right direction. Online groups can be beneficial for parents. Especially when the parents are unable to get out of the house or find a sitter. The idea that parents aren't alone and there are lots of people going through this will be very relieving and therapeutic. Self-Disclosure Janeen uses self-disclosure to add a level of trust and let others know they are not alone. Sometimes parents can be embarrassed and not want to tell people about their experiences. One time Janeen lost her child in a Target. When they found him, he was completely naked.  She laughs about it now, but at the time, it was traumatic, and she never wanted to talk about it. Autism Blueprint Janeen's podcast, Autism Blueprint is a real passion of hers. It is something she can talk about every day. Her child is an escape artist; he needs 24/7 attention. There are things in Janeen's home that you don't find in a typical house. Many doors inside the house have locks and keys. Plus, the glass doors are now plexiglass because when her child has a meltdown, things can get broken. Meltdowns can be almost catastrophic when your child is twenty-two and nearly six feet tall. Janeen's home is designed for him. During the podcast, Janeen talks about her home and also interviews experts. When Janeen added her podcast to her website, her SEO went through the roof. Now, SEO is one less thing she has to worry about. The podcast is helping people go and find her. Plus, it's another resource for Janeen to help people who may otherwise not be able to go to her practice.
