Episode Summary: In this episode of Sunshine in the Middle, I'm diving deep into something I've been quietly doing behind the scenes for the last 18 months—studying the words of President Dallin H. Oaks, one talk at a time. If you've ever felt like his tone is more stern than tender, you're not alone. I've been there too. But what I found as I listened, studied, and prayed was something unexpected—love, depth, and unwavering commitment to the words of the Savior. Here's the most compelling benchmark of AI progress: A task that took 60 minutes a year ago now takes 60 seconds. In January 2024, Geoffrey Litt and I spent an hour coaxing ChatGPT and Replit to build an app live on my podcast.12 months later, Steve Krouse and I built the same app with one prompt in less than a minute. Steve is the cofounder and CEO of Val Town, a cloud-based platform for developers to write, share, and deploy code directly in the browser. We used Townie, Val Town's AI assistant, to build an app to keep track of time on the podcast, take notes, and generate questions for the guest. Townie generated the app even before Steve could finish describing it on the show. As we demo Townie, we get into: Why Steve believes programming can rewire the way you think The rise of the non-technical AI developer and what that means for the future of coding How Townie works under the hood, including the details of the system prompt How Steve is evolving ValTown's strategy as AI progress continues to unfold The power of small, dense engineering teams This is a must-watch for founders building AI-powered developer tools, and anyone interested in the future of programming. TRANSCRIPT So I wanted to share this because this week in my nine week group coaching program, we were going through. Picking the right stories to tell. And one way that you will want to share a story is by wrapping it around your elevator pitch. There are several for reasons. There are several reasons for that. But right now we're going to focus on a simple elevator pitch, and we're going to focus on the things that are critical to your success. So there will be three key ideas. Grab a notebook, grab a pen, and let's get to it. Alrighty, so here's the baseline. When it comes to an elevator pitch, it is important for you to be brief. And to tailor the content of your pitch based on the person in front of you, based on the company that they work for, or that they own. And also in light of what you want out of that conversation. Now This is just point one out of the three ideas that are critical to writing and then rehearsing and then articulating the right elevator pitch. Here's why these thin...after you grab the playbook. That is what I want you to really do. Cause I want to be sure that if I'm engaging with you at mom2. org, Oh, or a virtual summit, or I hear someone's pitch. I want to be sure that I've done my best job to get the word out on the street, that there's a way to do it. And there's things that have to be considered. Okay. Alrighty. So. Grab the playbook. That is the biggest thing. And good luck on your elevator pitch. What I would say is really, really right before you tell your elevator pitch, just get yourself in that mindset, right? Get ready. Make sure that you're warming up your imagination so that this way you can play with it a little bit. And trust me, if I see someone playing with new ideas or with the way that they express what they do, like that lights me up because I think. Think that they're more comfortable in, in their skin. And who doesn't want to do business with someone that's more comfortable in their skin? Alrighty. Until next Tuesday.

Today we dive deep into a universal struggle that affects us all: the comparison trap. In a world fueled by social media highlights and curated success stories, it's easy to find ourselves measuring our worth against others. This happens to me all of the time. I see someone else's life: the promotion, the new house, a fancy vacation, their business success…and start frantically wondering why I don't have that yet. Setting aside dismissing my own successes, never once did I stop and think…is that something I actually want? With the highlight reels and the constant moving of our own goalposts, it is easy to see how our definition of success would start to get muddy. We slip into allowing others to define it for us and fall back into the never-ending loop of the comparison trap. It's time to take back control, use comparison as inspiration, not envy, and define success on our own terms. To help us do that is my friend Hayley Dawson, Founder of The Blocks.Hayley and I immediately connected over many of our shared interests including unpacking the unique struggles of today's 20-somethings. On top of overcoming the Comparison Trap, we discuss why your goals aren't timebound to your 20s, why quitting should be celebrated, and how to make decisions based on what matters to you.Key Takeaways:Today's unique struggles of people in their 20sHow social media has exasperated comparison and self-doubt5 powerful ideas for overcoming the Comparison TrapHow to change jealousy and envy into inspirationYour dreams don't have deadlinesDefining success on your own termsThe false definition of successWhy quitting should be celebratedHow to make up your own mindMentions:Tenants: The People on the Frontline of Britain's Housing Emergency by Vicky Spratt (https://www.amazon.com/Tenants-Frontline-Britains-Housing-Emergency-ebook/dp/B094DTJLZR)More of Hayley:Instagram: @_theblocksMore of The Struggle is Real:Find show notes and more at https://www.tsirpodcast.com/Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/tsirpod/

Planning and knowledge don't mean a thing if you don't execute. Action is everything.
In this fifth and final episode of the special IT Experts Podcast mini-series, we dive into the 36 powerful ideas and talk about finally taking all you learned into action to scale your MSP with confidence. These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have where you can actually download right HERE and is spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As usual, I briefly share with you what this mini-series is about, how it came together, how many episodes this consists of, and a recap of the previous episodes. In this episode of the series, we finally take all the lessons learned from the previous four episodes into ACTION and get results. Time to finally take your MSP through the 7-figure barrier. The first thing that you need to take into account is balance. It's important to make sure that you have got a balance in running your MSP. I share with you the analogy of the three-legged stool to help you understand why this is now the time to put some action. I also ask you the six powerful questions that I want you to spend a good 2-30 minutes on for you to fully have a think about and understand where your business is right now. I want you to write down these questions and answer them with your thoughts and initial response. On a scale of 1-10, how satisfied are you with how your IT/MSP is growing in line with the vision and hopes you had for it? Be honest with yourself. If scoring less than a nine or ten, what specifically about the business is causing you to feel this way? It may be more than one thing or area of the business… What is the consequence of not addressing what came up in 2)? If you could address what came up in 2) what difference would it make to your business and/or life? What one thing could you do that would allow you to start to address this? What would success look like if you fully addressed it? The second idea that is important in your action planning is to learn and understand the most important relationship ever. It's called cause and effect. The choices that you make cause and create effects in your life and in your business. Next is all about JFDI, like Nike! And the good old accountability. It's around going the right things in the right order at the right time. And this is what scaling your MSP is all about. I also tackle potential over performance. The achievement of real success comes from focusing on your potential with your business as well as your performance. Then I remind you of the importance of pausing and taking stock to get some perspective. It's always a good thing to clear all the clutter in your mind in order for you to move forward and work through your plan. I hope you enjoyed this mini-series, even though this has been a firehose of information for the whole month of September. We only have three months left before 2023, and let's make it matter. In this fourth episode of the special IT Experts Podcast mini-series, we dive into the 36 powerful ideas and talk about maximising your opportunities to scale your MSP with confidence. These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have that you can actually download right HERE and is spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As usual, I briefly share with you what this mini-series is about, how it came together, how many episodes this consists of, and a recap of the previous episodes. In this episode of the series, I talk about maximising your opportunities in your MSP business. This is about going from no leads to the lead flow. The first idea that I share with you in this episode is all about increasing your pricing. We understand that this is an area that most MSPs are scared to do, but here I explain to you why it's important and how to overcome this fear. The next idea that I personally love to help you understand is the reality that you are not important in your MSP until people know how you can make their life easier and how you can solve their problems. This might hurt a little bit, but I explain why and why this is a very critical element in having the right mindset so you can grow your MSP business. I also briefly talk about the sales funnel and getting your messaging right as one of the key elements in maximising your opportunities. The third and final idea that I share with you in this episode is what we call ‘shaking the tree' And this is all around how you are selling more. You have put your prices up, and you already figured out your messaging, but how are you selling more? How are you offering more value? I hope you enjoyed this episode, and we look forward to you following us on this mini-series, with the last episode being released on Monday, September 26th! To join our amazing Facebook Group of over 300 MSPs where we are helping you Scale Up With Confidence, then click here – https://www.facebook.com/groups/738967166458742 Until next time, you look after yourself and I'll catch up with you soon!
In this third episode of the special IT Experts Podcast mini-series, we dive into the 36 powerful ideas and talk about amplifying your capacity to scale your MSP with confidence. These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have that you can actually download right HERE and will be spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As usual, I briefly share with you what this mini-series is about, how it came together, how many episodes this consists of, and what these episodes are. In this third episode of the series, I talk to you about amplifying your capacity in your MSP business. Amplifying your capacity is about taking your business from being ‘Me Dependent' to ‘Me Not Needed', and this is all around the structure, operational flow, and facilitating the performance of your people as well. The first idea that I share with you is about investment and your thinking around it. Your investment isn't just about sales and marketing and thinks that the world would be easier once you have got them. Secondly, I talk to you about the importance of leverage, and we call it ‘heavy lifting made easy'. Sometimes, it's not until you make this decision that's going to then relieve you. The third and final idea for this episode is what we also call ‘You hired a monster.' And this is about your people; having someone come in, and when they're not doing their job properly, could result in an absolute car crash. It's around expectation exchange, facilitating their performance, and overcoming that difficult conversation. I hope you enjoyed this episode, and we look forward to you following us on this mini-series, with the next episode being released on Thursday, September 22nd! To join our amazing Facebook Group of over 300 MSPs where we are helping you Scale Up With Confidence, then click here – https://www.facebook.com/groups/738967166458742/ Until next time, you look after yourself and I'll catch up with you soon!
These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have where you can actually download right HERE and will be spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As usual, I briefly share with you what this mini-series is about, how it came together, how many episodes this consists of, and what these episodes are. Now, being the second episode of the mini-series, this is all about harnessing your ambition. It is all about taking you from being distracted and being completely demanded on by everybody to getting you absolute clarity and avoid overwhelm in your MSP business. In this episode, I talk to you about the Shadow of the Leader and how setting your vision, mission, and values perfectly connects with scaling your MSP business. It's important to look at your own reflection in the mirror and have a think about the gaps that you can fill in to be a better leader. I also talk about the importance of forecasting your KPIs and knowing your numbers. Remember that just because you have got a hundred thousand grand in the bank does not mean you have a successful business. The third key element that I talked to you about in this episode is all about accountability and the importance of having a vision. It's important to know what winning looks like for you and your vision will take you there. Your vision anchors the business. If you missed it, here are the six powerful questions that I mentioned in the previous episodes that I want you to spend a good 20-30 minutes on for you to fully have a think about and understand where your MSP business is right now. Write down these questions and answer them with your initial thoughts. On a scale of 1-10 how satisfied are you with how your IT/MSP is growing in line with the vision and hopes you had for it? Be honest with yourself. If scoring less than a nine or ten, what specifically about the business is causing you to feel this way? It may be more than one thing or area of the business… What is the consequence of not addressing what came up in 2)? If you could address what came up in 2) what difference would it make to your business and/or life? What one thing could you do that would allow you to start to address this? What would success look like if you fully addressed it? I hope you enjoyed this episode, and we look forward to you following us on this mini-series, with the next episode being released on Monday, September 19th! In this first episode of a special IT Experts Podcast mini-series, we dive into the 36 powerful ideas and understand the mind behind success to scale your MSP with confidence. These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have that you can actually download right HERE, and will be spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As I briefly share with you what this mini-series will consist of, I also share how it's important to get your pen and notepad (or electronic notepad) ready as I will be giving you some questions that are also important for you to answer, particularly in this episode. To start with, I mention how Episode 99 of the IT Experts Podcast plays an important role in this mini-series because that was the episode where Stuart and I talked about the MSP journey and its various stages. For this first episode of the mini-series, I talk to you about the One Thing your MSP needs, the importance of awareness and mindset in recognizing early warning systems in your MSP, how fear of change affects the way you run your MSP, and everything that has got to do with certainty, confidence and getting your mindset right. And for you to understand all of these ideas and how they link to building and scaling your MSP with confidence, then you will just have to listen to the whole episode. To procrastinate simply means to not do something that you know in your heart should be done. Procrastination causes undue stress, hinders our potential, and negatively affects self-belief. What separates high-achievers from everyone else is that high-achievers don't wait until they feel like doing something. They get in motion. I am joined today by Burton Hable. Burton Hable is a music educator, currently living in Central Virginia. He is a doctoral student in Boston University's Music Education program, and his research interests lie in how people construct music knowledge in the context of a makerspace. He also serves as the Operations and Building Manager for the Charlottesville Band. Prior to moving to Virginia in the summer of 2018, he taught instrumental music in Iowa for eight years. I've also known Burton for 20 years now, as we were high school classmates and played trombone in the same high school band together, and both of us came back years later to teach in the same district we graduated from. In so many ways, Burton and I share a similar journey in arriving at progressive education, and I am grateful to call him a friend and a learning partner for these many years. As the title mentions, this episode focuses on the niche pedagogy of “constructionism” largely attributed to one man, Seymour Papert, who published his first book, Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas, back in 1980. It's both fascinating and frustrating that despite 4 decades of research supporting the powerful impact on cognition and the opportunity for collaboration inherent in these ideas, the philosophy and framework of constructionism and similarly modeled “makerspaces” are still only deployed in limited pockets on the fringes of the standard model of school. This conversation gets at the same central premise as so many others on this podcast, that is our limited imagination about “what works” in schools as they are currently structured, and “what works to do what” within music education in particular. What does it mean to be musically literate? To be a musician? Burton Hable imagines the role of makerspaces supported by constructionist pedagogy in music ed as a way to expand and enrich the standard model for students, with the goal of creating a broader collaborative experience for students to engage with all aspects - creating, performing, responding, and connecting - of what it means to be musical.Connect with Burton @ burtonhable.com or on Twitter @burtonhableGUESTSBurton Hable, music educator & Operations and Building Manager for the Charlottesville BandRESOURCESMindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas by Seymour Papert (open access)Review: The Case for Constructivist Classrooms by Nick Covington See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Ooooh, there is a lot we can learn from James Clear on the topic of goals, which has been the focus on the podcast this month. James Clear is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits, which has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 50 languages. To be perfectly clear (see what I did there), he is not a guest on this episode, but perhaps that should be added to my goals list! In this episode, there is still so much to learn from him however as I introduce 3 of his powerful ideas - ideas which can potentially yield fantastic results on your goal setting journey. If you are a student or new graduate, this will be some important food for thought and for anything that resonates, implementation (such as the goal competition piece- maybe you don't want to have too many goals you are striving towards while also coming to the end of a degree and applying for jobs!)I'm excited for this to be a taster of his best-selling work in this space and if you'd like to find out more, this link is a great place to start - https://jamesclear.com/goal-settingLet's have a further chat about this on any of these platforms:Follow Your Career And Future on Instagram and TikTokSign up for the mailing list (being consistent with this is one of my goals for 2022!) #WisdomWednesdays: The Power Of Actively Listening And Connecting With Others We are constantly creating connections in everything we do. And the relationship we have with ourselves and other people—family, friends, and strangers alike—hone us in many ways. That's why fostering deep interpersonal and intrapersonal connections is a life-long pursuit for many of us. It allows us to be at our highest selves and always come from a place of compassion and kindness. At the universal level, it creates a chain of positive reciprocity. In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about three topics that would allow us to nurture our relationships with ourselves and others. First, they discuss what it means to be a mother and the concept of mothering yourself. Then, they delve into the practice of actively listening to others and how it helps foster trust and genuine connection. Finally, they share personal stranger encounters that show how powerful and life-changing interactions with strangers could be. Tune in and be inspired to start connecting deeply with yourself and other people! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how Rosie and Tessa view being a mother and what self-mothering is. Learn the essence of actively listening and how to become an active listener. Understand the power of strangers. Episode Highlights On Aging and the Decision to Have or Not Have Children Tessa feels a little nervous about aging sometimes because she has chosen not to have children. One of the reasons why Rosie wanted to have kids is she wanted somebody to take care of her. It's what has happened historically and culturally. But there's no guarantee your children will take care of you and not put you in a home when you age. Tessa's parents decided to put her grandmother in a home. Meanwhile, Rosie's grandmother is living with her aunt and has always been living with family. Becoming a Parent Rosie's path has not been linear. She still desires a family, but it's decreasing as she gets older. She believes that it will happen if it's designed for her life. If it doesn't, the desire will diminish and go away. People without children cannot imagine what it's like to have kids. Meanwhile, people with children cannot imagine life without their children. Tessa's Relationship with Her Grandmother A grandparent's love is different from that of a parent. Tessa's parents' decision to put her grandmother in a home shocked her. There was a chasm that grew between her and her mother that took some time to heal. It was tough because Tessa wants to protect and make her grandmother feel loved. She understands that there are many reasons why a home for her grandma was the better choice. It's a full-time job to take care of aging parents. Rosie's Relationships with Her Grandmother Rosie's grandmother raised her and her sister. Both of her parents worked full-time. She yearns for her grandmother whenever she doesn't feel well. She was yearning for her mom when she had COVID. But she also wanted her grandmother to take care of her. What Being a Mother Means Self-mothering is a self-care process for Tessa; it's unconditional love. Rosie's idea of mothering means being aggressively protective yet all-encompassing in the most loving way. Rosie pondered some questions in her journey of becoming a parent: What is the definition of a mother? What does mothering mean to you? How do you mother yourself? The process of re-parenting and learning to mother yourself is a crucial part of adulthood. Tessa's mother now wants a friendship with Tessa because she feels like she did her job as a mother. The Job of a Mother We constantly need to revisit our job of ensuring we feel loved and cared for as mothers to ourselves. The more we tune into mothering ourselves, the more we can feel safe in navigating our lives. Sometimes, we need to feel mothering from other people. You can utilize communities if you don't have a mother or lack a good relationship with yours. There are many “mothers” in tribal communities waiting to fill chasms with love. The world needs more of this feminine energy that comes from a place of compassion and kindness. Active Listening We garner more connection if we start actively listening to each other. Active listening is a practice. Having a dialogue in your head while someone else is talking is not active listening. Active listening is witnessing someone telling a story without judgment. The whole concept behind actively listening is to establish not only a connection but also rapport and trust. Tune in to the full episode to learn the seven ways to becoming an active listener! Practicing Active Listening in Teacher Training Rosie asks people to face each other, with one person speaking and another listening without interruption. Sometimes, we're quick to reply to someone because we want to validate and reassure them. But it can stop the flow of emotion of the person speaking. After the person speaking stops sharing, the other person would paraphrase for them. Then, they switch positions. This practice builds a sense of trust that is important in building a community. Teacher training is a great way to create a safe space for yourself and build life-long relationships. Listening vs. Hearing Hearing is different from listening. Listening requires you to go beneath the words, observe on an intuitive level, and connect from that place. If you pay attention, sometimes, nobody's actually having a conversation in a room full of people. Tessa never practiced actively listening as a child because there was no model for it. 80% of the time in couples coaching, both parties want the same result. Often, the reason for the problem is they don't feel seen. All it takes to connect with someone profoundly is to step back and listen. The Importance of Eye Contact Practicing eye contact is valuable. An exercise Rosie learned in training is to make eye contact without saying anything. Being in the presence of another actively while eye gazing is hard, even for a short time. The exercise involved the following: eye gaze, maintaining eye contact for 30 seconds, and complimenting the other person after the time's up. It was uncomfortable for Tessa and Christopher on the first two tries. On the third try, they transcended the silliness and started to see a deeper level of emotion. Connecting with Strangers Next week's guest is the author of the book The Power of Strangers. He says that constant distraction from our phones hinders us from making conversations. Rosie's rule when traveling is she cannot be on her phone. She has to engage with the Uber and Lyft drivers she books. Tune in to the full episode to hear about Rosie's most memorable travel conversation with a driver and how he is alive now because of the power of strangers! We have the power as people to change somebody else's day. The Power of Strangers The power of strangers shows up in Tessa's life in the form of angels. She had a serendipitous experience with a stranger. At the line for her favorite coffee shop, she started to get impatient because the man before her was taking forever. It turned out that he wanted to pay for her coffee. Tessa paid it forward to the person behind her. It became a chain of reciprocity of generosity with the people in line. On another note, the new artwork in one of Tessa's favorite parks says, "Smile at five strangers today." But once you smile at one person, you won't stop at five. Tessa hopes to spread more positivity by smiling more at others and making smiles contagious. 5 Powerful Quotes [12:01] “[Self-mothering] is very much a self-care process. It's very much a way that I speak to myself. It's very much a way that I say, ‘I love you unconditionally'.” [17:31] “If we listened to each other, we would garner more connection, we would be more inclined to engage with other people, we would feel more confident, more grounded, more able to express ourselves fully.” [19:50] “[Active listening] is really an act of witnessing and letting someone else do the speaking and holding space for them while they're speaking.” [26:59] “Listening requires you to go beneath the words and to observe on a heart level, on an intuitive level to try and see what's underneath the words… Then, try to connect with them from that place.” [43:22] “Let's make smiles contagious. Our capitalistic world has led us to think of self-care as something we can buy. In truth, however, the best ways we can care for ourselves cannot be found and purchased in a handy bottle. Real self-care requires us to pause, reflect, and express ourselves with compassion. Tune in to this episode as Rosie and Tessa discuss ideas for self-care to nurture yourself and your relationships. #WisdomWednesdays: Pressing Pause, Mindful Speaking, and Powerful Ideas for Self-Care Our ideas for self-care often consist of getting a relaxing massage, dipping into bubble baths, and splurging on new stuff. This perception makes it seem like self-care is sold in bottles — in bath bombs, in beauty and wellness products, in art materials, and the list goes on. But the highest forms of self-care actually cost nothing and can also extend to your relationships and interactions with others. In today's episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss self-care practices that will nourish you and your relationship with your loved ones. Fostering good relationships is equally essential to your well-being as pampering yourself every once in a while. Learning how to express yourself kindly, embracing change, and pause and reflection are self-care practices that improve your life overall. If you want to learn valuable ideas for self-care to nurture yourself and your relationships, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn about the “feel, felt, found” technique and how to use it in situations filled with stress and frustration. Discover the importance of choosing your words and how you say them wisely. Find out how pressing pause and expressing yourself compassionately are the ultimate practices of self-care. Be mindful of the language you use with others and yourself. Every time you find the urge to tell someone to calm down or react negatively to being told this line, try using the “feel, felt, found” technique. It's about what you “feel” the person is feeling at the moment, what you “felt” about it, and what actions you “found” you can both take to assess and solve the situation. Listen to the full episode to find out how the technique worked for Rosie and Torry! Expressing Yourself with Compassion When you're frustrated, it's difficult to respond to situations compassionately. We aggressively react most of the time because of the underlying fear, which may prevent us from acting wisely. For Rosie, one of the ultimate ideas for self-care is expressing yourself fully. Suppressing your feelings due to fear of losing control or exhaustion is harmful because you might develop an unhealthy relationship with self-expression. Acknowledging someone's feelings immediately diffuses the situation. The Danger of “But” When you use ”but” in a sentence, you negate everything that came before that. Try changing “but” into a different word, such as “and”. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. Use your words mindfully instead of lashing out at people. Responding with Empathy When Tessa notices someone getting upset, she tries to respond with empathy and acknowledgment. Try putting yourself in another person's shoes. It's easy to simply attack someone for not sharing the same opinions and beliefs, but it's necessary to work on bettering our relationships to create a ripple effect. Changing the world starts from home. It's where we learn how to form relationships. Moving On and Embracing Change Moving forward and not being stuck in the past is one of the best ideas for self-care. Living in the present allows you to create new habits and improve yourself and your relationships. In relationships, don't use the words “never” and “always”. These trap people in their past selves and creates an obstacle for change. We're all constantly changing, and accepting change comes with treasuring your people. Choosing What To Say and How To Say Them Be more conscious of the language and communication style you use with others. Though it might be unintentional, using “never” and “always” can come off as dismissive and judgmental. Also, remember that it's not always necessarily about what you're saying, but how you're saying it. So, pay attention to your body language and non-verbal communication. Choosing to speak mindfully can help you become a better communicator. Remember to Press Pause Stepping away from a situation can diffuse it and help you calm down. It's best to do something else to collect yourself and return to a charged conversation at a later time. Not many people realize this, but pausing and reflecting are the greatest acts and ideas for self-care. Misconceptions About Self-Care Tessa's friend thinks that self-care is something she has to do. Self-care is somehow commercialized as though it could be bottled up into products. But self-care isn't something that you can buy; it is something you already are, and you are capable of attaining on your own. Crucial Ideas for Self-Care It's essential to be consistent in caring for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. Build self-care into your day and take a pause. Also, express yourself clearly and compassionately. Remember that being passionate doesn't give you a pass to express yourself rudely. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [18:41] “One of the ultimate practices of self-care is to be able to express yourself fully, to be able, to tell the truth as best as you can, and to not push it down.” [22:12] “If we have the capacity to express our anger, we should have the capacity to use our words mindfully and use our words kindly instead of just lashing out at people. [26:22] “Start now. You can create a new habit every day. Every moment, every second, you have the opportunity to not be that person.” [26:47] “We are who we are. But we also are who we are going to be.” [36:18] “Build [self-care] into your day. Take those breaths, take those pauses, have conversations, express yourself in a very clear and concise way that doesn't involve an aggressive tone.” This episode is brought to you by Hooked on Phonics www.hookedonphonics.com/loved Get your first month for just $1.00 Enjoy the Podcast? After 8 years doing this podcast and many years prior doing interviews for Playboy, I don't get star-struck. To the contrary actually. While hosting The Playboy Radio Interview for Playboy, I spoke with actors like Henry Winkler, bands like Dirty Heads and Drive By Truckers, strong personalities like Tom Sizemore and Governor Jesse Ventura. Artists and artisans alike and I always challenge myself to go beyond what you already know and bring you new ideas. That's not always easy. Sometimes interview guests are focused on “talking points”, they want to stick to the hits. The Showroom is an interview series in partnership with Walker Zanger. We are in our second year of this series and it has been an absolute joy working with Walker Zanger and the guests who appear on the podcast. The opportunity to sit down with Bunny Williams was one that meant a lot to me when booking her for the show and now listening back and editing our conversation. I wanted to bring you another side of Bunny Williams that you don't find in the trade publications. The work speaks for itself, so I wanted you to get to know Bunny. Her firm, the history, importance on mentorship, lessons learned from Sister Parish and Albert Hadley. I wanted you to hear about the dogs that are of such high importance, regularly featured in and always present in Bunny's world. The make a guest appearance. Over the course of 12 years, the Hau‘oli Mau Loa Foundation in Hawai'i convened a group of organizations working in a new approach to education focused on the environment. John David Mann's journey through life has been varied and diverse - but his purpose has been consistent. In this conversation, you'll discover how John has followed his core purpose to achieve success in seemingly unrelated initiatives. You'll also learn something about becoming a better writer yourself as we discuss John's free gift to everyone, a book titled How to Write Good (Or at Least, Gooder!) - link in show notes. He's evolved from concert cellist at age 9, to award winning composer at age 15, and working with other 17-year-olds to create the high school they wished for - to international best-selling author of over 35 books with more than 3,000,000 books sold. In between, he's been a highly successful entrepreneur and businessman. So, what's the common thread through all of that? His purpose, which is to bring his ideas and passions to life to entertain and educate others. Perhaps his best-known work is the Go-Giver series of books which he's co-authored with Bob Burg. This summer (July 2021) he introduces his first thriller titled Steel Fear which he's co-authored with former Navy Seal Brandon Webb. This is a very special end of year episode that I hope serves as a celebration of the conversations I have had on the podcast this year. My team and I have put together some of the very best ideas shared on my show which I believe, if you start implementing, will immediately start to transform your health and happiness. The central theme is looking after our minds, which has never been more important. Whether it be controlling our reaction to stressors, managing anxiety, spending time alone with our thoughts OR cultivating resilience and learning to be more present: this special episode will help you on your journey to become your true, authentic self. We’ll hear:Rich Roll on the importance of having time alone with our thoughts and why we need discomfort in order to grow.Jay Shetty explaining why so many of us these days are not living lives that are truly ours.Tom Bilyeu discusses identity, how to become resilient and how to view criticism as a gift.England Football Team Psychologist Pippa Grange shares her belief that most of us are performing at life not living it. She explains why we should stop holding back, put fear aside and allow ourselves to live the life we want to live.Brian MacKenzie reveals how we can use the power of our breath to become more present and help counteract the constant stimulus of modern-day life.James Nestor explains why the way we breathe is so important for the health of our body and for the health of our mind.Psychotherapist Julia Samuel talks about the many ‘living losses’ we are experiencing through the pandemic and that how we respond to change, in many ways, determines how our lives will unfold. And finally Peter Crone - AKA The Mind Architect - explains why we all need to slow down in order to find true happiness in our lives. This is a powerful episode that I really enjoyed listening back to - I think you will too!Show notes and the full podcasts are available at drchatterjee.com/142Follow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Dr. Bill Robbins - General Dentist in San Antonio, Texas that has a "very rich life" that has still had his fair share of challenges. He has published over 80 articles, abstracts, and chapters on a wide range of dental subjects and has coauthored a textbook, Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry – A Contemporary Approach. He recently co-authored a new textbook, Global Diagnosis – A New Vision of Dental Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. Contacts: www.stoneoakaesthetics.com, Global Diagnosis Study Club - https://www.actdental.com/gde-home (Meeting almost every Friday from 9-11 am EST) Dr. Kevin Groth - General Dentist in Detroit, Michigan who considers both Kirk and Dr. Robbins as mentors as leaders that have guided his life over the past number of months during these COVID challenges. His favorite part of being a dentist is that every day and every patient is different. Contacts: www.grothdental.com The "WHY" in the conversation is "about the journey". Not about where you end up at the end but how you get there. The "Pankey Cross" involves a Center that indicates "Happiness" with arms on the cross that say: Love, Work, Play, and Worship. The more you can live your life in balance with these 4 concepts, the more happiness you can enjoy. The pathway we take may not always be the pathway we originally planned on taking, but that doesn't mean it is the wrong path. As we go through the journey, we may find that our original plans were not in our best interest. But be sure that as the journey goes on, you don't forget the things that need to be considered the most important. As Dr. Robbins was receiving a major award, he discusses the moment of realizing his journey had led him to be a highly respected and amazing dentist and teacher, but a lousy husband and father - which is one of the most important moments in his life. He decided to take off a half a day off to be with his family. When he did that one thing, it completely changed the dynamic as his wife was able to see he was making a sacrifice to set his priorities in order. His happiness now is not associated with the successes of his practice but how he lives his life. The left brain is the Executive part of the brain that makes the decisions and helps us to know where and what to do while the right brain is the Intuitive side of the brain or the "feeling side". Dr. Robbins discusses how the shutting down of the left side of the brain can allow for the kind and blissful right side of the brain to show through. You need to be in tune enough to recognize those special times that arise and "be there" when those moments happen. Be aware enough to understand that when you say "yes" to something, it means you are saying "no" to something else. Quotes: - We were created to be happy. - If you are a young dentist and are involved in a lot of debt, living your life in balance is difficult to do and may not be appropriate as we go through certain passages in our lives and we have to sacrifice in some areas. - If you look at 100 dentists in the US, 2% are masters, 8% are adept, 36% are students, and 54% are indifferent. - The happiest person I know is my dog Lulu who is happy all the time. - "You owe it to yourself to be the absolute best dentist you can be" was the old guidance. Although that still holds somewhat true, the guidance is now "Being a good dentist is one part of a great big picture". - Dentistry is important but it may not be that important, but Family is WAY important! - If you want to talk about balance, the Family has to be a top priority. - If you default to your "normal life" it is going to be a left brain life. Unless you do something to keep that from happening, that is your default. - Have some way in your life to pay attention to your right brain and listen to it. It can only function in the present time. - Stay out of the future and live in the moment. - "I make the rules, I can change this, I control this..." - Simplicity...

Professor Kristen Thompson and Loras College student Audrey Miller share with Beth: Why there was a need to improve the Hientkamp Planetarium at Loras College How a select group of honors students raised funding for a new projector Why the planetarium is an important part of both the college and the community How a man traveled all the way from Israel on the coldest day of the year to install the new projector Key Takeaways: Never judge a planetarium by it’s outside appearance… people are astonished when they come inside! The story of the stars can be told through history, different cultures, and from different perspectives Planetariums & observatories can be found everywhere- you don’t have to go far to be inspired! “[From the outside] you see such a different shape, and then you step inside and you feel like you’re in a TARDIS and there’s no limit to where we can go! We can visit Saturn, we can stand under the rings and look up at the rings. You can watch a sunset on Mars, we can go anywhere in the galaxy we have data for, and with the dome, we have our own IMAX theater!” Loras College Professor Kristen Thompson SHOW NOTE BONUS LINKS! Social434 was designed to go way beyond “oh do a video, or go on Facebook live.” No, this talk was designed to realign people’s thinking about how they market their events. And for those who execute against these ideas, good things await in 2019 and beyond.

Malke Rosenfeld is the creator of Math in your Feet, a program to teach students mathematical concepts through the medium of dance. (Really!) She does school workshops and teacher trainings, and now has a new book, Math on the Move, describing her approach and the theory behind it. We talk about interdisciplinary learning, embodied learning, liking vs. hating maths, and attitudes to "alternative" teaching methods. Malke herself, like many people, never really "got" maths while she was at school. After getting involved in the percussive dance scene, she one day woke up to the possibility that "surely there's math in this". From there, she went on to develop her unusual, and potentially controversial, but certainly fun, pedagogy. She draws on the ideas of Seymour Papert from his book Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas, and on modern neurological research showing the extent to which we think through our bodies, and have to understand things in many ways for them to really sink in. Enjoy the episode.
Although the push to persuade everyone to learn to code is quite the current rage, the coding movement has roots that extend back for more than a few decades. In 1980 Seymour Papert published his book, Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas, arguing that learning to code would help children to better understand not only educational subject matter, but how to think. This book influenced the push in the early 1980s to place coding in schools. This early “learn to code” movement, though revolutionary, was unsustainable for many reasons. In the new book Connected Code: Why Children Need to Learn Programming (MIT, 2014), Yasmin B. Kafai, Professor of Learning Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, and Quinn Burke, Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at the College of Charleston, reexamine this early movement and the necessity of reintegrating coding into the K-12 curriculum. Kafai and Burke, too, view coding education as essential in assisting children in understanding how to think about different subjects. But the authors do not simply theorize coding as helping with computational thinking. Kafai and Burke assert that learning how to code is productive for computational participation. That is, programming helps learners not only with thinking, but also with communicating and making social connections. Computational participation, therefore, has ramifications that go beyond the schoolhouse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
