Departments need to prioritize mental health services for their staff. Courage is required to advocate for change in the fire service. A healthier workforce leads to better service delivery. Firefighters should not accept a work schedule that compromises their family time. The financial implications of overtime can be significant for departments. The host of The Behind the Shield Podcast that brings the greatest minds in mental and physical wellness to the world's first responders, military, medics and beyond, James Geering is impact living through filling the void in the First Responder wellness with amazing knowledge. He was born in England and spent almost thirty years there before emigrating to the U.S. His early years saw me in in a spectrum of jobs from lifeguard to stuntman. He had always dreamed of becoming a Firefighter and lived that dream once he moved the United States, were he has been a Firefighter/Paramedic for fourteen years. I am also a Crossfit coach and a graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology. James states, "At the start of my firefighting career I felt invincible and thought that the only danger to my health would be in a collapse or burn over. As the years have progressed, I began to notice a trend of ill health in my profession. Through questioning everything I had been taught, I began to deconstruct the entire fitness community and rebuild from the ground up. I realized that there was a giant void in the area of First Responder wellness. There was only one solution; fill that void with the amazing knowledge I had encountered along my own journey of repair." His passion to help is matched by his vast experiences in life. I have followed James on his podcast, "Behind The Shield" and have been impressed by his goal to, "Bring the greatest minds in wellness to the men and women who serve our communities." James Geering spent fourteen years as a firefighter and paramedic, working on both the east and west coasts of America. He was born and bred in England, moving to America in 2002. He is also the host of the Behind the Shield Podcast and the author of "One More Light- Life, Death and Humanity Through the Eyes of a Firefighter". As a firefighter, he understands the ins and outs of trauma, PTS and addictions that plague our heroes. James and I speak about how first responders see behind the curtain, while citizens get the image of the world on a screen. It is impossible for anyone outside of being a first responder can understand the value of the work we do. James also shares his feelings of childhood trauma in the life of first responders. This podcast will provide insight into why sleep depression, trauma and environmental stress is the perfect cocktail for depression, addiction and suicide. James and I discuss ways to improve the climate surrounding our Countries disdain surrounding the Thin Blue Line.
