Podcast: Industrial Cybersecurity InsiderEpisode: The #1 Myth Putting Your Industrial OT Assets at RiskPub date: 2025-03-25Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn this episode, Dino and Craig tackle one of the most overlooked vulnerabilities in industrial cybersecurity: the unintentional chaos caused when IT security procedures are blindly applied to OT environments. Using real-world examples like the CrowdStrike EDR failure, they illustrate how tools meant to protect can actually shut down production lines, cripple HMIs, and introduce massive operational risk. They call out the air-gap myth, the need for shared authority between IT and OT, and the critical importance of context when deploying cybersecurity solutions on the plant floor. For executives and practitioners alike, this episode is a wake-up call to rethink governance, accountability, and collaboration between traditionally siloed IT and OT teams.Chapters:00:00:00 – IT vs. OT: The Unspoken War00:01:03 – Meet Your Guides: Dino & Craig00:01:05 – IT/OT Explained… Without the Jargon00:02:26 – How IT Crashed the Plant Floor00:05:12 – Talk to Me Like I'm Production00:08:53 – Security Priorities: Worlds Collide00:13:40 – Vendors, Integrators & Invisible Risks00:21:52 – Who Owns the Fallout?Links And Resources:Cybersecurity & Digital Safety Group on LinkedInDino Busalachi on LinkedInCraig Duckworth on LinkedInThanks so much for joining us this week. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Emmanuel Djengue, a dynamic professional whose passion for technology and user-focused innovation has shaped his remarkable career path. From leading tech initiatives to connecting diverse people and ideas, Emmanuel exemplifies the very spirit of relentless curiosity and strategic thinking that we celebrate on this show. We’ll be delving into his personal journey, uncovering how he transforms ambition into concrete impact, and discussing the role collaboration and how talent can play a crucial role in fostering exponential growth as the world goes through a workforce transformation requiring reskilling and upskilling, while finding the talent for the right role across markets. KEY TAKEAWAYS Insurance is a product that no one wakes up in the morning wanting to buy, but it’s super essential to society and people, especially life insurance. We need to be able to help people understand the importance of insurance as well as ensuring that everything we offer to the customer has to be simple, attractive and on the right timing. Health insurance is also very important, how do we help people with this? I’ve studied how people think to figure out how to motivate them to do things. If you bring this element into the innovation of the industry, we’d be able to improve the way people interact with insurance as well as the way they care about insurance and take care of themselves. There are 3 types of InsurTech players: Integrators – the ones that identify and have solutions and want to integrate them into what an insurance company is doing. Disruptors – They want to change everything that doesn’t work well so that it does, these need financial capability to do that, so there are not a lot of startups that can be disruptors. Collaborators – who want to touch base with insurers to try to improve what’s going on The difference between a great and a bad insurer is not so much in the product, efficiency, etc. It’s on the people making the company great. If I need to do more innovation, change things, and bring something different, why not help people to solve this issue? The number on business problem for anyone is unsuccessful hiring. BEST MOMENTS ‘South Africa has one of the most innovative markets in life and health insurance, there are a lot of startups doing great things there.’‘Too many startups turn up to the market to play disruptor roles, but only 1 or 2 players can do this and win.’‘In insurance David is not going to win against Goliath.’‘Both sides need to need the partnership and want the partnership to happen.’ ABOUT THE GUEST From the moment he first tinkered with a computer at a young age, Emmanuel Djengue has been captivated by the power of creativity and innovation to transform lives. His journey—marked by curiosity, resilience, and collaboration—has taken him from passion projects in his hometown to spearheading tech initiatives on a global stage. Along the way, Emmanuel developed a talent for weaving user-focused storytelling into every project, bridging technology and humanity in impactful ways. Fueled by an enduring love of problem-solving, he thrives on connecting diverse people and ideas to craft solutions that don’t just work, but inspire. Whether rallying a team around a new software concept or mentoring future innovators, Emmanuel’s drive to make a positive impact is as unyielding as his imaginative spirit, promising that every new chapter of his story will be just as vibrant and compelling as the last. Rachel Lebowitz is the Founder of Empowered COO, which helps integrators and COOs eliminate burnout, resentment, and self-doubt to execute their visions. She is also the Founder of Driven Spouse Forum, a space that bridges the gap between high-level, visionary entrepreneurs and their spouses. As a former EOS implementer, Rachel is the author of Empowered COO. In this episode: Visionaries drive innovation and big-picture thinking, but their success often relies on the unsung efforts of integrators who systemize and execute those ideas. Without clear boundaries and effective communication, integrators risk burnout and frustration, hindering business growth. How can second-in-command leaders, like COOs, thrive in their roles and build successful partnerships with visionaries? Rachel Lebowitz, a coach for visionaries and integrators, has developed processes to support integrators in navigating their demanding roles. She highlights five key areas that lead to burnout, including people-pleasing behaviors, lack of assertive communication, and overdependence on external validation. Rachel emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries, delegating effectively, and fostering self-confidence to maintain balance and productivity. Additionally, Rachel recommends asking critical questions rather than providing solutions to empower teams and encourage independent thinking. In this episode of Systems Simplified, Adi Klevit speaks with Rachel Lebowitz, the Founder of Empowered COO, about how integrators can enhance their roles and relationships with visionaries. Rachel shares insights from her book, the process for executing visions, and her systems-oriented approach to developing calculated solutions.

Stitching a new energy trading and risk management (ETRM) system into a modern systems environment is a substantial and risky undertaking. ETRM as a business function is notably complicated and the challenges an integrator faces are legion. Energy trading is perhaps the most complicated of all of the various functional areas one encounters in the oil and gas industry. It is a high risk, high stakes, high cost, highly dynamic, complex function with strong ties into operations and finance, relatively few actual transactions, and carried out by a small number of people who have deep industrial insight. What could go wrong? The successful integrator will promote an open and collaborative environment for the multiple technology and business teams to address the many integration challenges. While the stakes are high, the benefits of a well-designed and executed integration are well worth the investment. Additional Tools & Resources:

As CEO of SVT Robotics, A.K. Schultz leads the overall company vision and go-to-market strategies. A.K. has spent his career leading the design and implementation of high-profile automation projects across multiple industries and top Fortune 500 companies, participating in the deployment of over $1 billion in automation. That experience gave him a unique understanding of the technical solutions customers need to advance their business, and it provided the foundation to launch SVT Robotics in 2018.Nick Leonard is the SVP of Product at SVT Robotics. With extensive domain and software leadership experience, Nick ingeniously bridges the realms of business and technology, honed through his journey rising through project management and solutions architecture. At SVT, Nick shapes the overall product vision, ensuring the company remains at the cutting edge of robotic process automation. Beyond the office, Nick prides himself on being a mentor, tech enthusiast, and avid reader.SHOW SUMMARYIn this episode of eCom Logistics Podcast, broadcasted live from MODEX 2024 in Atlanta, the conversation dives into the heart of robotics, software, and connectivity within the logistics industry. Featuring interviews with Nick Leonard and AK Schultz from SVT Robotics, the discussion elaborates on the revolutionary software solutions SVT Robotics provides, aimed at enhancing interoperability, automating processes, and ensuring seamless connectivity across various logistic operations without needing physical robots. Their software acts as a central nervous system in logistics, enabling quick and efficient data monitoring and utilization. The episode further explores real-life applications and challenges solved by SVT Robotics' innovative connectivity solutions, emphasizing the critical role of data in optimizing logistics and the importance of easing the integration burden on IT departments and automation integrators.HIGHLIGHTS[00:01:01] Meet the Minds Behind SVT Robotics[00:01:25] Nick Leonard's Journey in Automation[00:02:40] AK Schultz on Solving Interoperability in Robotics[00:06:26] The Philosophy of Connectivity and Integration[00:13:16] Customer Success Stories with SVT Robotics[00:16:19] The Future of Automation: Monitoring and Optimization[00:18:01] Real-Time Incident Management: A Customer Story[00:19:42] Advanced Logging and Fault Analysis[00:20:43] Exploring Orchestration in Robotics and Automation[00:23:40] The Future of Open vs. Closed Ecosystems[00:25:07] Bridging Technology Gaps with Connectivity[00:27:18] Partnering with Tier One Systems for Integration[00:29:11] Empowering IT and Integrators with Advanced ToolsQUOTES[00:06:37] "The machines are really executing what the software is doing and the magic is in the software, right? And so that's number one. Number two, we connect to software or robotic software is basically automating and making things faster and it doesn't necessarily need to involve a machine. It doesn't have to have an articulated arm robot. It can just be a mechanical system, right? So really what it's about is unlocking sensor data and putting it into this, what we see is us being the central nervous system."[00:16:39] "So the first thing I think a lot of people misunderstand is. Now we're connected. What's the next challenge we have to think about? We're going to maintain that system's health, right? Because now we're running an automation facility and you were talking about 120, 140 picks an hour from your baseline. Okay. Now I have that ROI, that clock's ticking. I need to make sure that we're at that 100 to 200, 124 picks all day long. And a lot of automation systems, it's making sure that silent failures aren't happening in your system. So a lot of times maybe you're a bad data from a wrong order structure or something like that. One system doesn't like the data that's being exchanged. A lot of times that's happened. That's silently failing in the background."Find out more about A.K. Schultz and Nick Leonard in the links below.A.K. There are several blind spots that entrepreneurs often overlook when building remote teams of 1 to 5 people. Having an operating system in place, emphasizing quarterly planning, documenting processes, and fostering clear communication can help you overcome them. Many entrepreneurs resist structure and routine, but that implementing an operating system can significantly reduce anxiety, build trust within the team, and drive productivity. We'll also touch on the difference between an integrator and an operator within a company's organizational structure. We'll explain how an operator runs the system, ensuring that even if they are unavailable, the company's processes continue to function smoothly. This reduces the risk associated with relying solely on an individual to manage operations. Ready for more?
