Ever since its humble beginnings in March 2016, The Babylon Bee—a Christian, conservative version of The Onion—has been a godsend for Americans who have become worn out by news outlets that take themselves too seriously. From its theological inside jokes about the prosperity gospel to its long-standing feuds with Snopes and CNN, the Bee has made its mark in the world of satire. On today’s episode, David and Sarah are joined by the Babylon Bee’s editor-in-chief, Kyle Mann, who tells us about the challenges of satire writing in a cultural moment when it’s not always easy to determine fact from fiction. “There is an element where it’s not that our articles are too close to reality, it’s that reality is too close to satire,” Mann explains. “It’s what makes it so hard to write because you write something that you think is so goofy and over the top and then people believe it because reality is so crazy.” Listen to today’s episode for a conversation about C.S. Lewis’ best books, Kyle’s joke-writing process, and a tell-all about why Twitter’s decision to temporarily deplatform and demonetize the Babylon Bee was ironically “the best thing that could happen” to the team. Today’s episode would be incomplete without its requisite dose of legal nerdery. Tune in to hear David and Sarah discuss the never-ending saga with Michael Flynn, the McGahn case, and Sarah Palin’s defamation case against the New York Times. Show Notes: -Some of the Babylon Bee’s top headlines: “Nation's Cats Endorse Trump In Hopes Americans Will Go Back To Work And Leave Them Alone”, “Nation Shocked As Jerry Falwell Jr. Doesn't Turn Out To Be Man Of Upstanding Character,” “Lego Introduces New Sharper Bricks That Instantly Kill You When You Step On Them,” “Joel Osteen Sails Luxury Yacht Through Flooded Houston To Pass Out Copies Of 'Your Best Life Now,' ” “Inspiring: Celebrities Spell Out 'We're All In This Together' With Their Yachts.”
Episode #20 features Marine Corps veteran Jimmy Guevara; but what it REALLY features is a mirror for a lot of the vets I’ve met. A mirror that shows the struggle of trying to fit in to a world—whether it’d be a professional, educational, social, or any other society that you try to slip in to without understanding that you are not the same type of person that you once were.Jimmy shares his story (that turns into a two-part episode) about his journey into and through the Marine Corps. He shares very personal moments that, if you knew Jimmy… these moments he shares… really had to be pulled out over a period of time after having established a trust with him. But why I think they are important and urged him to share—is because I have a very similar story, and if I have that story… many other people do too! Stories like losing his grandfather who was murdered over political views, being in an abusive home, having alcoholic role models, joining ROTC because he had a feeling that he needed a stable structure. Stories like leaving the Marine Corps he loved so much, to take care of external obligations… for him, his mom. Stories that he has about himself from being a college dropout and what seemed to employers as “stubborn” and “insubordinate,” into an extremely relevant and trustworthy key player in the advocacy movement for the student veteran at two (going on three) colleges! But it’s not that he was stubborn or defiant, he is a Marine; A Marine that tried to assert a higher level of standard—one of quality vs. quantity—in the places he sought employment, which sometimes (as most of us have experienced) doesn’t fit well in a place that isn’t looking to let go of some of the qualities keeping them from being exceptional. Yes I’m biased.Jimmy is a storyteller, so my intention was to give Jimmy the platform, and let him go! Jimmy throughout this conversation talks about his troubled high school career that was primarily a gap filler of time that was a hurdle between he and the Corps; he talks about his deployments and almost being a casualty to “friendly-fire,” and his short-yet-much-needed career in the Corps. We talk about legacy, and what it takes to rebuild oneself from the moments that seemed like failure. As a student veteran, Jimmy found himself creating a college that he wished he had the first time around. Not knowing anything about the red tape of most programs, or even programs in general, Jimmy found himself becoming knowledgeable on all the benefits available for the veterans in college and created a team to take care of all the veterans looking for financial aid, a place to stay, study help, VA benefit enrollment, and even found himself advocating for vets to have a safe haven where vets can come and be around people who wouldn’t judge us for our personalities that don’t quite fit in other groups around campus.Jimmy gives a theory about why vets don’t do well in school, and mentions that “there is actual power in being a student instead of sitting in the background.”I love this conversation because Jimmy is the epitome of “if there’s a will there’s a way…” From forging signatures to change his education programs in order to be able to go into the Marine Corps, dropping 75 lbs to become a Marine, and then realizing that just because you’ve failed once at something does not mean you’re a failure… only that the way you tried it before, wasn’t the way that works to see success!“I worked too hard to quit!”Jimmy’s last note… “The More Veteran’s we help, the more support we’re gonna get!----------------------Show Notes----------------------Some other key points to the conversation were:•Networking•How we should get out of the mindset of “transitioning…” and change the mindset to “acclimatizing” or “adapting,” (which is actually an interesting thought)•Feeling stuck•Finding your identity•What it’s like being an only child in a service that becomes family•How leadership comes from watching leadership be leaders•Learning from your teaching mistakes to become a better instructor•Putting on a Mask to fit in with the Marines who couldn’t wait to get out•Taking “One Class at a Time!”•How to advocate for veterans… “Bring what you know!”Most importantly we talk about Jimmy’s Call to Action! Give Back! Stand up for your vets!Shout outs to Boogie (Alfred Wilson) and Carter

How many times have you doubted the BIG VISION for your family building businesses together? Has it gotten harder over the years to visualize you and your spouse really walking FULLY in that vision? Here’s the thing, the less we see ourselves doing it, the further it is from us. But that’s only part of it. The other part is this, simply put, far too many quit on themselves by ‘settling.’ We get it. Sometimes it hurts to try again. To keep visualizing what you desire can feel like a lost hope. But we’re here today to speak hope into that space. SHOW NOTES: Some of you are giving up too soon! In this episode we’re discussing:

Experiencing Financial Contentment with Dominique Henderson, CFP® | Get Better Results in Your Life
Show Notes: Some of my young advisor friends find themselves in the first 3-5 years of business asking the question... Can I sell and help? I'm here to tell you that there are some definite things you can put in place to avoid the financial professional's dilemma. Wanting to help people, but also the need to provide for your financial needs can present this dilemma. How do you bridge that seemingly wide gap in motives? Understand you will need a "True" North. First and foremost, you must remain true to yourself at all times. This means that money, fame, success at any level will only amplify who you already are. If you're a good person with a good heart, then all those things will only make you better...however the reverse is true. Pro tip: This is why I highly advocate all my coaching clients to have a morning routine that centers you and helps you affirm the reasons why you do what you do (whatever that is). Having a True North will help you stay true to you. Understand that receiving compensation = "Thank you". Practically speaking...being compensated for selling a product or selling advice is just token of appreciation. I heard this concept from Rabbi Daniel Lapin and it was really eye-opening for me. You see all of us come from different money stories and depending on how you were raised you may view money as something other than a tool. It is not in of itself good or bad—it is can only be those things based on who is using it. So if you provide someone with a solution to a problem and they compensate you with money for doing that then you have earned the right to it and you should be proud of what you've done because you've helped them solve a problem. Understand that you need "margin" or runway. Be prepared to "weather the storm" of this industry. Understand what you are getting into. Don't start in this business if it means that if you don't get any clients that you won't be able to provide for yourself or your family financially. It will take some time for people to trust you with their money regardless of how good your advice is. Be prepared for that and have some savings because it may take you a while to ramp up your income.Quick Question...Where do you fall on this continuum? Do you think you would have a conflict between selling or helping? Let me know down in the comments. Thanks for listening, reading and watching. Are you a current or aspiring financial professional? To help answer some of those questions, I’ve brought on two powerhouse women, one being my wife Lori Harder, and the other is the remarkable Lindsey Schwartz. These two women have recently collaborated on an upcoming event called Event Luv, a five day training program for holding profitable, successful events. Because I’ve been watching how this collaboration unfolded firsthand, and because I have been watching how well they work together, and some of the tough things they’ve had to do to make this successful, I decided to bring them on to ask them the tough questions around how to form a successful partnership. Listen up, get inspired, and get ready for several takeaways that are going to help you in your business. Question Highlights: Is this a partnership or a collaboration? Why are collaborations so valuable right now? What value do partners bring to the table? How do you have the money conversation? Have you had any moments where you’ve had to have tough conversations? Whose idea was Event Luv? What is the one thing you’re most excited to teach? Guest Bio: Lindsey Schwartz is an entrepreneur, top podcast host, and best-selling author. As a sought after speaker, Lindsey travels around the world inspiring women to get out of their own way and into action around their big ideas, and helping them create the careers they’ve always dreamed of. After seeing numerous women in her life stop short of pursuing their own entrepreneurial dreams because of fear and self-doubt, she saw the need for more honest conversations about the ups & downs of entrepreneurship in order to show women that they don’t have to have it all together to get started. From there, the Powerhouse Women community, annual event, and podcast were born, with the motto that we're not meant to do business (or life) alone! Lori Harder is a transformational speaker author, Forbes Top-18 Female-led Podcast host, Number 1 Best-selling author, and thought leader. Get ready for the read along at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books or your local indie.Show Notes- Some fun facts about The Amazing Race.- The Valkyeries in mythology, and maybe you didn't notice that "Val Hall" is a play on Valhalla. - Vampires in pop culture & literature.- Remember your high school English teacher talking about characters who are foils of each other? This is not to be confused with your algebra teacher talking about how to solve quadratic equations.- On Urban Dictionary, I want to kiss the person who defined Frigid it as "An outdated, Victorian term used to describe women who aren't interested in sex. Only used today by drunk men in bars to explain why the woman they attempted to pick up wasn't interested."- A wacky look at some potential real life examples of time travel.- Just out of curiosity, this is what you'll find if you google "Bad Ass Estonian General." IMPRESSIVE.- Sarah's wet noodle joke is part of a long literary tradition where vampires just need a good dose of viagra.- All about beta heros, cinnamon roll heroes, and a link to a lot of talk about the latter from Ana Coqui's November 2018's #RomBkLove. - Sarah mentions "the vampire chained to a bed" and she's talking about Conrad Wroth, the hero of Dark Needs at Night's Edge (book 4).- Just a brief review of birth control, how we use it, and why it is so important to women's rights.- In case you were wondering why Jen talked about "no one ever has to go to the bathroom." It's a thing. Sarah accused Jen of RUINING ROMANCE, but clearly that's not the case because here we are.- More about lightning and planes.- Chicago's Bubbly Creek. That's real. If you ever want to nerd out on this history, Jen recommends a book called Nature's Metropolis. Honestly, you really have no idea how fascinating grain elevators are.- The short and incomplete list of magical items introduced in this book: Kaderin gives the Furies armor that can't be pierced and a battle axe that can kill Lore beings without having to behead them. The New Zealand coven of Valkyeries has a choker that allows the person wearing it to sing a siren's song. No one knows what happend to the armband that makes the wearer feel overwhelming sexual desire. Amphitrite's tear is a bead that will heal any wound. The Blade of Honorius never misses its target. Thrane's Key was the time-traveling prize in this Hie, and at the end of the book, Riora gives Sebastian one to use at his discretion.- Deus Ex Machina is fun to say, but kind of a bummer when that's how an author gets her characters out of a jam.- All the cool vampires from the mid-2000s carry RAZR phones.- Diamonds are a construct, just like virginity.- Sarah is pro-Kardashian.- Bowen & Mariketa are coming up next, but the thing she was excited about at the end of that book actually happened at the end of Dark Needs at Night's Edge.- Swineherds vs. shepherds, and the only time Jen ever felt truly understood on Reddit.- The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin, and if you think Jen wasn't dying to update Genius with this Kresley Cole reference, you don't know her at all. But maybe the video is more your speed.
Well, what can I say... They are great one-handed Halloween costumes. Pirates because of Captain Hook. Jedis because many if them have one hand cut off. Zombies because of similar reasons to that of the Jedis. However, zombies often are missing limbs for many reasons other than being severed. Regardless of how these characters ended up with one or fewer hands or limbs, they do make such great one-handed costumes. And even though these are currently my favorite styles of Halloween costumes, this has not always been the case. When I was a young boy I was teased a lot about being "Captain Hook." Sometimes some people would use that character as a pejorative or derogatory term. As a result I never did the Captain Hook costume in my youth. Zombies also hit a little to close to childhood heart. However, Jedi Knights were always at the top of my list. Despite all the uncool baggage I received and that I perceived about myself in my younger, I simple love Halloween and one-handed costumes. This podcast is about how realized how much cooler Halloween can be when you are comfortable with yourself. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment, or leave some feedback. Show Notes: Some really good one-handed Halloween costumes.
