The Boys Finale Breakdown and The Mandalorian and Grogu Review, Plus Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on Avatar Season 2

    Geek Freaks

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2026 88:12

Episode Summary The Boys is officially over, and Frank and Thomas dig into a series finale that split the internet right down the middle. They break down why Homelander's fall hits harder than the backlash suggests, where Kimiko's powers felt rushed, and how Butcher's heel turn landed for comic readers versus everyone else, before scoring both the finale and the full 2019 to now run. From there, they jump to the big screen for The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie they both enjoyed while admitting the plot is paper thin and the whole thing feels like stitched-together episodes. The centerpiece is a long-awaited sit down with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who returns as Uncle Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender season two on Netflix and plays Captain Carson Teva in the Star Wars universe. He opens up about adapting a beloved animated series, why he avoids the deep lore cuts when building a character, the reckoning Iroh faces in the live-action version, and the everyman appeal of Carson Teva. He also reflects on Kim's Convenience, the season six that never happened, and why he thinks tearing down something new before watching it is a waste of energy. Timestamps and Topics 00:00:00 Intro and Weekly Catch-Up 00:03:52 The Boys Series Finale Review 00:25:27 The Mandalorian and Grogu Review 00:47:01 Interview With Paul Sun-Hyung Lee 01:20:55 Rapid Fire Questions 01:24:06 Network Updates and Weekly Recommendations Key Takeaways The Boys finale earned an 8 out of 10 from both hosts, with the full series landing at a 9, praised for ending on a hopeful note that the good guys can actually win if they stick together. Homelander losing his powers reveals who he always was underneath the facade, a takedown the hosts rank among the best villain endings on TV, even if the way he lost them through Kimiko felt like a quick fix. The Mandalorian and Grogu works as crowd-pleasing, kid-friendly Star Wars but lacks a real character arc, scoring around a 6 to 7 with both hosts feeling it plays like several episodes cut together. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee approaches adaptation by serving the scripts rather than chasing deep lore, and the live action Avatar gives Iroh a real reckoning for his role in the siege of Ba Sing Se that the cartoon glossed over. Carson Teva works because audiences connect with the grounded everyman in a universe full of Jedi, a role compared to Nick Fury, Agent Coulson, and even R2-D2. Kim's Convenience remains a point of deep pride for Lee, who still wishes fans had gotten the Appa and Jung reconciliation from the original play, but stands by going out on top. Quotes "When those were stripped away, he no longer could act like the same person." (Thomas, on Homelander) "The good guys can just straight up win." (Frank, on the finale's message) "We're so specifically Korean that it becomes universal." (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, on Kim's Convenience) "If you don't watch it, you can't talk smack about it." (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, on hating something unseen) "Go out on top if you're going to go out." (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, on ending Kim's Convenience) Call to Action If you enjoyed this one, subscribe so you never miss an episode, leave us a review wherever you listen, and share it with a friend who needs convincing on the finale. Star Wars has been building to this for six years, and "The Mandalorian and Grogu" opens this week as the first big-screen chapter of Din Djarin and Grogu's story. Matthew, Alex, and Erin put together the primer you need: Din's origins as a foundling of the Children of the Watch, Grogu's choice to stay with Mando over the Jedi, where Season 3 left the two of them, and how the Shadow Council connects to the First Order. Also covered: Sigourney Weaver as a New Republic colonel, Garazeb Orrelios from "Star Wars Rebels" making his live-action debut, and Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. The episode gets into the debates worth having before you sit down: whether some Hutts speaking Galactic Basic is internally consistent (Erin makes the case and lands it), whether the film will acknowledge the canonical romance between Zeb and Agent Kallus, and what Mando's new status as an off-the-books New Republic contractor means for his approach to bounty hunting. Martin Scorsese is voicing a character named Hugo. It needs explaining, and the hosts explain it. Before signing off, a round of congratulations to Erin on completing nursing school and her pinning ceremony. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. SummaryThis episode covers a politically driven arc of Star Wars the Clone Wars where the sides of good and evil are blurred more than ever before. Season 3 episodes 10 and 11 and Season 2 episode 15 delve into the political differences between the Republic and Separatists, showing that not all is as it seems. Major focus is given to Ahsoka and her reaction to meeting those she thought to be her enemies. Only this time, it is a battle of ideology, not blasters and sabers. The arc goes in a wild direction when murder meets a close friend of Senator Amidala. While the local police chase their tales, we get into the strangeness of senators investigating crime.KeywordsStar Wars, Senate, Crime, Republic, Separatists, Padme Amidala, Bail Organa, Onaconda Farr, Clone Wars, Mina Bonteri, Peace, Jedi, Sith,TIMESTAMPS00:00:07 - Evan's birthday surprise begins00:00:28 - Jacob reveals the Jar Jar Binks face-tracking filter00:01:56 - Jacob explains spending six hours building the Jar Jar setup00:06:24 - Technical breakdown of creating the Jar Jar avatar00:09:27 - Full recap of the Clone Wars Senate arc00:16:01 - Evan explains why he normally dislikes Senate episodes00:17:18 - Discussion about humanizing the Separatists00:19:18 - Ahsoka's perspective on the “enemy” begins changing00:21:17 - Discussion about Jedi exposure to Separatists before the war00:26:03 - Why this arc is crucial for Ahsoka's character development00:28:02 - Discussion about civilian casualties and Republic responsibility00:36:01 - Why both sides believe they are morally right00:39:19 - Palpatine manipulating both sides of the war00:41:17 - Were Padmé's peace efforts doomed from the start?00:45:22 - Debate over creating more clones00:48:20 - War profiteering and the Banking Clan discussion00:54:54 - Comparing Lolo's actions to Anakin's moral decline00:59:16 - Does Padmé's moral victory actually matter?01:04:14 - Final thoughts on why the Senate episodes still matter01:05:24 - Tease for Evan's next “gift”

Brennan Lee Mulligan Talks Survivor 50 Ep 12 Survivor 50 is racing toward its climactic finale, and Rob Cesternino is joined by comedian, Dimension 20 Dungeon Master, and Survivor superfan Brennan Lee Mulligan for a passionate, deep-dive recap. Rob and Brennan break down an episode rocked by a double-tribal, sending two of the season's biggest legends—Rick Devens and Cirie Fields—out of the game in a single night. With emotions at an all-time high, they explore what sets these players apart, how the double loss impacts the remaining castaways, and what it means for the jury and Final Tribal Council. Rob and Brennan discuss how Rick Devens' showmanship and “make it fun” style are shifting what it means to be a Survivor great, comparing his penchant for fireworks to Cirie's brilliant subtly and Jedi-like social manipulation. They examine why losing shields like Ozzy and Rick exposes superstars such as Cirie, and how modern Survivor's “optimized play” might clash with the show's need for big characters and bold moves. As the jury looms, talk turns to whether a Survivor résumé or real relationships will matter more at the end, and if players like Rizo are being underestimated by their competitors. – An emotional breakdown of Rick Devens' risk-taking, including his iconic coin flip and idol bluffing – The strategic ripple effect of losing both Ozzy and Rick, leaving Cirie exposed – How Cirie's legendary social game and quick-thinking continue to define the Survivor pantheon – Tiff and Aubry's underdog paths, and the importance of loyalty versus voting records – The debate over whether Rizo is a sleeper threat or just a goat in the eyes of the jury Will the fun-first, improvisational approach of players like Rick redefine the game, or is Survivor still a social masterclass led by players like Cirie? With only five players left, who will win over the jury—and could being on the “wrong side of the vote” actually be the right move? In 2020, developmental biologist Dr. Crystal Rogers drove the country roads outside Davis, California crying between grant rejections, wondering whether she was about to lose her lab, her career, and the scientific future she had spent years building. She had already done what academia tells young scientists to do. She earned the credentials. She landed a faculty position at UC Davis. She built a lab. Then the real test began. On this episode of Standard Deviation, Dr. Oliver Bogler examines the unspoken rules that determine which scientists survive academic research and which quietly disappear from it. The conversation follows Crystal Rogers and cancer biologist Dr. Michelle Mendoza as they collide with the “Hidden Curriculum” of biomedical science: the unwritten rhetoric, institutional signaling, and grant writing strategies that often decide who receives funding, tenure, and long term stability.Michelle Mendoza entered a tenure track position at the Huntsman Cancer Institute while raising 3 children, navigating a divorce, and trying to secure major NIH funding during COVID. What looked like objective scientific review turned out to depend heavily on persuasion, presentation, and insider fluency. Established researchers could promise massive research agendas based on reputation alone. Junior investigators faced a completely different standard.Oliver traces how the Life Science Editors Foundation and its JEDI program intervened by pairing scientists with former editors from journals including Cell and Nature. The work had little to do with commas or grammar. Editors challenged logic, structure, and scientific framing before grant reviewers could destroy an application in public. Both researchers eventually secured career defining grants. One realized she would keep her job and not have to move her family. The other celebrated by ordering a personalized “DEV BIO” license plate and driving through Davis blasting nineties hip hop and Beyoncé.The episode exposes how biomedical research funding rewards institutional fluency as much as scientific talent, and how hidden systems inside academic medicine continue shaping who gets to stay in science long enough to make discoveries.RELATED LINKSDr. Crystal Rogers LinkedInDr. Crystal Rogers Faculty PageDr. Crystal Rogers LabDr. Michelle Mendoza LinkedInDr. Michelle Mendoza Faculty PageHuntsman Cancer Institute Mendoza LabLife Science Editors FoundationFEEDBACKLike this episode? We come at last to the grand finale of the original Star Wars trilogy, and it, too, is haunted by the past. Once again, in space, a one time scoundrel must trust his gut and swoop down to the pits of a cataclysmic, moon-sized weapon to save the day. Once again, aboard that station, a Jedi must come to the realization that striking down his opponent is not the path to real power. And once again, on a small world below, a rag-tag group Rebels from across the galaxy can do nothing but watch and hope as... wait, sorry, I'm taking another look. What are those little furry guys. They didn't have those at Yavin, I'll tell you that much. Seems like a group of difference makers if I've ever met one. Support the show by going to Patreon.com/civilized!
