The Case for Bringing Back Disney World Perks (Ep. 22)

Jim Hill presides over another not-so-weighty session of The Case For as Len Testa and Chris Cox debate which lost Walt Disney World guest services deserve a comeback. Inspired by a listener email about resort package delivery, the trio weighs the case for bringing back in-park purchase delivery, Magical Express, resort airline check-in, wider Extra Magic Hours access, longer park days, and even those wonderfully impractical resort mugs. Along the way, they consider whether these old perks were just guest-service niceties or clever ways for Disney to keep visitors shopping, dining, and planning their next trip. HIGHLIGHTS • Why resort package delivery may have quietly shaped how much merchandise guests bought in the parks • The argument for bringing back Magical Express as both transportation and a moving Disney marketing moment • How resort airline check-in is starting to return in limited form for select Value Resort guests • Whether Extra Magic Hours should once again be available to more Disney resort hotel guests • Why Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom may have the strongest case for longer operating hours HOSTS • Jim Hill - X/Twitter: @JimHillMedia, Instagram: @JimHillMedia, Website: jimhillmedia.com • Len Testa - Bluesky: @lentesta.bsky.social, Instagram: @len.testa, Website: touringplans.com • Chris Cox - X/Twitter: @bigcox, Instagram: @magiccox, Website: magiccox.com FOLLOW • Facebook: @JimHillMediaNews • YouTube: @jimhillmedia • TikTok: @jimhillmedia • Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jimhillmedia/ SUPPORT Support the show and access bonus episodes and additional content at https://www.patreon.com/jimhillmedia. 871 · The Most Surprising Hotel Near Walt Disney World: My ette Hotel ReviewOne of the most exclusive hotel awards on the planet - harder to earn than a Michelin star, given to less than 1% of hotels worldwide - belongs to a boutique property sitting just one mile from Disney's Animal Kingdom. Yet most Disney fans have never heard of it.Lou Mongello has stayed at virtually every Disney resort and countless hotels around the world, always believing that where you stay shapes the entire tone of a vacation. So when he was invited to experience ette Hotel, he wasn't quite sure what to expect. What he discovered surprised him.In WDW Radio #871, Lou shares his complete, honest review of ette Hotel - from the beautifully designed rooms and Michelin Key recognition to hospitality that echoes the Disney philosophy of "everything speaks." He also dives into one of the best meals he's had in a very long time at Salt & The Cellar, and why the restaurant alone may be worth the trip. Plus, what makes this property different, who it's perfect for, and why it may be one of Central Florida's most overlooked luxury experiences. If you've ever wondered whether stepping outside the Disney bubble could actually enhance your Walt Disney World vacation, this episode might surprise you as much as the hotel surprised Lou.

The episode wraps with a fond farewell to CityWalk Orlando's Hot Dog Hall of Fame and a deep dive into Steven Schussler, the Rainforest Cafe creator whose themed-dining imagination helped shape restaurants at Disney, Universal, and beyond. What would the ultimate Walt Disney World resort look like if we could mix and match the best features from every Disney resort? In this episode, we're taking on the ultimate Disney Resort Draft Challenge to find out. Using a snake draft format, we each build our dream resort by selecting from categories including location, overall theme, lobby, standard room, pool, quick service restaurant, table service restaurant, lounge, transportation, and recreation. But there are plenty of twists along the way. We each receive a one-time Steal Card that can completely change the outcome of the draft, while a randomly assigned Forced Pick means every resort—even Value and Moderate resorts—has a chance to shine. To keep things balanced, we're also required to include at least one Value Resort selection and one Moderate Resort selection in our final resort. Throughout the draft, we explain the reasoning behind every pick, debate what makes each resort element special, and do our best to convince each other—and you—that our choices create the ultimate Disney vacation destination. Whether you're dreaming about your next stay, planning a future trip, or simply love talking Disney resorts, this episode is packed with strategy, friendly competition, Disney debates, and plenty of opportunities to play along and decide whose resort you'd book first.

Disney Springs transportation changes have the Disney community split, and Lauren and Eric dig into why this resort bus and water taxi policy is about more than just closing a parking hack. They look at how resort amenities, beignets, pools, and fireworks viewing have all become part of the broader “who gets access?” debate. Then they shift to Pixar, Toy Story 5, online movie rankings, and the surprisingly passionate arguments over WALL-E, Monsters Inc., Onward, Lightyear, and Cars 2. HIGHLIGHTS Disney Springs transportation restrictions begin June 28, limiting resort buses and water taxis to Disney Resort Hotel guests and guests with qualifying reservations. Lauren and Eric discuss why some fans see the change as a reasonable fix, while others see it as limiting access to the wider Walt Disney World bubble. The conversation expands to resort hopping, Port Orleans beignets, pool access, and how influencer-shared “hacks” can change guest behavior. Eric and Lauren consider whether these changes will actually reduce crowding or simply create new workarounds for determined guests. Toy Story 5 sparks a bigger conversation about Pixar rankings and which films fans defend the hardest. Lauren and Eric compare internet favorites like WALL-E, Ratatouille, Coco, The Incredibles, and Toy Story 2 with their own family's picks. Monsters Inc., Onward, Toy Story 4, Lightyear, Cars 2, and The Good Dinosaur all get pulled into the debate over Pixar's best and worst. From deeply personal battles to global tragedy and joyful milestones, today’s Rickey Smiley Morning Show delivers a powerful mix of headlines that hit on every level. The biggest shock comes from singer Muni Long, who reveals she secretly battled a life-threatening health crisis after developing pneumonia while on tour—ultimately undergoing a double lung transplant after doctors told her she had just a week to live. Her story adds new perspective to her recent performances and reminds listeners that you never really know what someone is going through. Meanwhile, Dwyane Wade gets candid about mental health, opening up about falling into a period of depression after retiring from the NBA and turning to therapy to cope with the emotional transition of leaving the game he played his entire life. On a lighter note, love is in the air as Philadelphia Eagles star DeVonta Smith ties the knot with Mya Danielle in a sophisticated black-tie wedding at Disney World, celebrating their long journey from middle school sweethearts to married couple surrounded by family, friends, and NFL stars. But the show also takes a sobering turn with global news, reporting on devastating back-to-back earthquakes in Venezuela that have left at least 164 people dead and hundreds injured, with rescue crews still searching for survivors as the damage continues to unfold. Jim Hill and Dan Graney dig into a wild week of Marvel speculation, from murky Avengers: Doomsday leak drama to Sony's carefully controlled Spider-Man: Brand New Day rollout. They also spotlight the Muppets' latest Marvel crossover before Dan unveils a Doctor Doom theory that may reframe Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return entirely. Plus, brisket, burnt ends, Muppet Treasure Island covers, and one very big question: what if Tony Stark was never the rule, but the exception? HIGHLIGHTS • Jim and Dan break down the blurry Avengers: Doomsday footage leak and the debate over whether it was real, AI-enhanced, or both. • Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers tease Doomsday as a structurally ambitious, emotionally complex follow-up to Infinity War and Endgame. • Spider-Man: Brand New Day ticket sales arrive with a tiny cast video instead of the trailer fans expected. • The new Brand New Day trailer points toward a Spidey-versus-Hulk showdown and a world where almost no one remembers Peter Parker. • The hosts dig into the mystery of who still remembers Peter Parker, from Savage Hulk to a possible Jean Grey connection. • Marvel's The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe celebrates The Muppet Show's 50th anniversary with Kermit, Gonzo, Deadpool, and one very mean Uncle Ben joke. • Dan lays out his big Doctor Doom theory: what if Doom is the multiversal constant and Tony Stark was the one heroic anomaly? • Jim connects the theory back to Doctor Strange's “one” winning timeline and the possibility that the MCU only ever had one good Tony Stark. Starting June 28, 2026, Walt Disney World is implementing major changes to transportation leaving Disney Springs. Buses and Sassagoula River Cruise boats to the resorts now require proof of a valid hotel stay, dining reservation, or Enchanting Extras booking. Social media has erupted with complaints, claims that resort hopping is dead, and accusations of Disney being greedy. But what's really happening? In this episode, we break down exactly who this change affects (and who it doesn't), how the verification process works, and why Disney is cracking down now.Going deeper, we'll explore how the last 10+ years — especially the COVID-era population boom, remote work migration to Central Florida, and the explosion of Annual Passholders and locals — have fundamentally changed how people use the resorts and transportation system. What started as occasional “beignet runs” or convenient loopholes has scaled into real capacity problems for paying resort guests. Is this the end of the magic for locals and passholders, or a necessary step to protect the experience for guests paying hundreds per night? If you love thoughtful Disney discussion that goes beyond the headlines, this episode is for you. I'll share personal stories from living minutes from the parks and offer a balanced perspective on why prioritizing resort guests might actually be the right move.

870 · 10 Reasons to Visit Shanghai Disneyland... and Why This Trip Changed MeChina is a long way to go for a theme park... but Shanghai Disneyland is not a theme park. It is a destination that happens to have a Disney castle at its center.Lou Mongello had the privilege of being invited by Disney for Shanghai Disneyland's 10th anniversary celebration, with time alongside the Imagineering team who built it. In this episode, he gives you 10 reasons to visit Shanghai Disneyland, and why right now, during its 10th anniversary, is the perfect time to go.Here is what you will hear:The one design decision that makes Shanghai unlike any Disney park you have ever set foot in, and why it disorients you in the best possible wayThe only place on Earth you can walk through Zootopia, a land so detailed that guests line up just to photograph the lamppostsWhy the tallest Disney castle in the world is something you go inside, not just photograph, plus the anniversary-only shows playing on it right nowThe trackless boat ride that fans who have been to every Disney park call their single favorite attraction, periodThe one land where Disney hands you the controls, and the climb that Lou says sends you back down a different personThe stunt show with a real, raging tornado on stage, performed more than 10,000 times with live performers inside itThe snacks worth flying for, the Cast culture built from scratch, and the brand-new Spider-Man land rising right now with its coaster track already complete!and much more! And stay with me to the end, because this is the part I did not see coming. This trip did not just give me new things to talk about. It genuinely, fundamentally changed the way I think about Disney parks, not just what I think about them, but how. I am going to explain exactly how, and why, and why it might just change the way you see them too.Whether Shanghai is already on your bucket list or you have never once considered it, this one might change your mind.

Is Disney still worth it in 2026? Short answer: yes. In this episode we are breaking down exactly why 2026 is actually a really great time to visit Walt Disney World. We also get into the promotions available right now, including free kids dining when you book a room and dining package, and free water park entry on check-in day through September 8th. And we talk about why fall is one of the best times to visit, from Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party to the holiday season that follows. Send us Fan MailWhat would your perfect day at Walt Disney World look like if you had to make some tough choices? This week on The Mickeyphile Podcast, Scott and Karen take on the Perfect Disney Day Challenge. The rules are simple: in each Walt Disney World park, they get one snack, one meal, three attractions, one show, and one hidden gem. No unlimited budgets. No trying to do everything. Just the experiences they'd choose if they only had one day to experience each park their way.Would they rope drop Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or head straight for a classic attraction? Is the best EPCOT snack found in World Showcase or somewhere else entirely? Which shows make the cut, and which fan favorites get left behind? Along the way, they compare choices, debate priorities, and discover that building the perfect Disney day isn't as easy as it sounds. Before the challenge begins, they break down several Walt Disney World news stories, including the opening of Level99 at Disney Springs, new transportation restrictions affecting some visitors, Disney's new 2-Day, 2-Park ticket for EPCOT and Animal Kingdom, and the upcoming refurbishment of the Grand Floridian Café.Plus, Fourth of July plans, recent visits to the parks, and plenty of Disney discussion from two Central Florida locals who spend a lot of time in the magic.Play along and see how your perfect Disney day compares to ours.As always, thank you for listening to The Mickeyphile Podcast.
