Noel MacNeal is a puppeteer who has performed in various Henson productions, working on Sesame Street on-and-off since 1982. His most well-known work has been his portrayal of Bear, the lead character of Bear in the Big Blue House.Born and raised in New York City's Central Harlem, he began his puppetry career on the television series The Great Space Coaster (taking over from John Lovelady as Knock Knock) and later made his way to Sesame Street, joining the show as a "puppet wrangler."MacNeal's first Muppet performance was a supermarket cashier in a Grover sketch; MacNeal flubbed his one speaking line, to tell Grover that his register was closed and to go to another line, which resulted in his character getting a close-up in a pick-up shot.MacNeal's other Sesame roles have included several full-bodied Snuffleupaguses, including Snuffy's mommy at various points, and his daddy in the unaired "Snuffy's Parents Get a Divorce." In the feature film Follow That Bird, he performed Madame Chairbird and doubled for Caroll Spinney as Big Bird in a scene where he's running from Bert and Ernie's plane. MacNeal has puppeteered Big Bird on several other occasions, such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition to performing, he has played an active role in hiring and training puppeteers for local Sesame Street productions in Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Jordan, Palestine, and India. During MacNeal's time on Bear in the Big Blue House, he served as principal performer, director, and wrote a few episodes. In 2005, he reprised the role of Bear for Breakfast with Bear. His more prominent non-Henson credits include the baby dragon Magellan on Eureeka's Castle, Leon MacNeal in The Puzzle Place, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. He also puppeteered on Between the Lions (taking over Lionel for the last two seasons), Blue's Room, and Oobi (Kako). MacNeal spent a stint as host (and writer) for Sprout's The Good Night Show and has puppeteered on more adult series including 30 Rock, Oz, Chappelle's Show (in the "Knee High Park" spoof of Sesame Street), and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He is the resident puppeteer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As a writer, he contributed scripts to The Puzzle Place, Eureeka's Castle, Gullah Gullah Island, The Magic School Bus, and Cyberchase. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s all subtext and implication, really, but what if we told you there is a canonical connection between Velma and lesbian pop culture? Listen as we unmask her, in true Scooby-Doo style, to reveal that Velma is actually Zelda Gilroy, a character on the 1960s teen sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis — and Zelda, in turn, is Sheila Keuhl, all-around badass, a queer trailblazer in California politics and someone who’s still serving Angelenos today. About Eric Early: For 25 years, Eric has fought in the courts to help people stay in their homes and help job creators, businesses and innovators succeed and stay in California while building his own successful law firm. Eric was a candidate in 2018 for California Attorney General against Xavier Becerra, receiving almost one million votes as a first-time candidate. Eric's career as an attorney did not follow the usual path. He attended New York University’s undergraduate film school, and then held various positions, including producing videos for Hasbro Toys, directing short children’s films for The Great Space Coaster, working as post-production supervisor on hundreds of animated episodes of The Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jem and the Holograms, My Little Pony, and writing several animated episodes of G.I. Joe and Jem and the Holograms. At one point, he produced trailers for “King of the B-Movies”, Roger Corman. While working full time to support his family, Eric attended Southwestern Law School’s evening program and after graduation worked at one of the most prominent law firms in the state, where he was a Partner for a decade. Eric was regularly involved in complex litigation matters in California and throughout the country, primarily focusing on business, entertainment, real estate, title and escrow related litigation. In 2010, Eric started his own firm along with several of his colleagues, Early Sullivan Wright Gizer & McRae LLP (“Early Sullivan”). Early Sullivan, which now has over 30 attorneys, has been recognized as Boutique Firm of the Year by the California Daily Journal, and has been named as a Best Law Firm by U.S. News for several years running. Eric has been the firm’s Managing Partner since its doors opened, has successfully tried several cases to verdict – one of the results being awarded Defense Verdict of the Year by the Daily Journal, and has overseen countless complex lawsuits in which the firm’s clients have prevailed. During the normal course of his practice, Eric has also handled several cases in which he has represented homeowners whose properties have been victimized by real estate fraud, in which fraudsters try to steal their homes. He has been able to regain control of the properties for his clients. Early Sullivan practices in all the courts of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Florida and handles cases in other states as well. Among various honors, Eric is the Past President of Southwestern Law School’s Entertainment and IP Alumni Association, was selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America every year since 2017; and has been named a Southern California Super Lawyer every year since 2005.

After so many weeks of jocularity, your three favorite educated hillbillies wander into semi-serious topics as they discuss business owners rights, Gary Gnu, and family heirlooms with a a few detours along the way. We start this week's voyage off with Heavy trying to sing once more.  If you like that sort of thing, then you are in luck. If you don't like it, wait it out because it thankfully only lasts a short while. Inspired by his own singing, he shares with us a tale of him trying to bond with one of his daughters over Michael Jackson music.  That leads to some talk about seventies and eighties kids shows like the Lost Saucer and Wonderbug, which somehow leads to Gus claiming one of the actors in Wonderbug would go on to star as a non-porn role in the infamous New Wave Hookers 2.  (check out his credits on IMDB!)  Then Heavy tells how Mrs. Longmire tried to pronunciation shame him on the pronunciation of "GNU" but he defended the attack by citing the Gary Gnu show from The Great Space Coaster!  Heavy also offers up some New Wave fun facts (the music, not the porno movie) and Gus and Heavy have stories of stupid stuff their kids have said lately. Gus then stears the ship into a serious discussion about separating the art from the artist and how society changes their views on a persons creations if that person may fall out of favor due to actions or new facts emerging about their character.  Somehow that leads to a discussion about states rights, the rights of a business owner to refuse service and the legal and moral implications of private citizens excluding customers based on any number of criteria.  Obviously, we needed J.J.'s legal opinion, so hopefully he will correct us via email. Speaking of email, Tellito sends in a thought provoking email about family heirlooms which leads the guys down memory lane and man is it dusty and dry. Bill's alleged sweetness starts this episode off. Blake is a 2 shave a day guy. Matt is a self proclaimed evolutionary step and Dave Moss is his spirit animal. The TSA lady in The Spanish Prisoner gives Bill the icky feelings. The fellas agree that passive aggressive responses to movie studio notes would not make for good scenes. Where have you gone Great Space Coaster? "Tell her I'll call her from the road" might be the saddest sentence in existence. David Paymer is Hollywood in a nut-shell. Bill's continued attempts to engage celebrities and referees alike now have Matt permanently cringed. What one gummie can do, another can do. How does a guy miss a Spacey in the audience? Foley is so dole-y with the visual clues. Dave says "Don't do as Dave does, do as Dave says." The boys discuss hospitals being bad news. Shout out to the guys who have signed on to bust Matt out of the hospital. Bill ruins our day, yet another episode and maybe the entire podcast, this time with an enormous bummer of a personal story. Thanks for sharing, Bill!

Last week, we attended our local comic convention, Rhode Island Comic Con, with the goal of interviewing some of the cons amazing guest lineup for Hey You Geeks. Turns out, the con was a case-study on how not to run a convention. The geeks came in force, but the con just wasn’t equipped to handle the masses. This got us to thinking about the state of geek culture. As experiences have shown, geek culture is booming, but we wonder; Is this the peak? In the long shadow of geekdom, a sub-culture built from outcasts and niche obsessions, what does it mean to be a geek today? After pondering these questions, we end the show with the two fun interviews we did manage to grab at RI Comic Con, one with Reb Brown, the first Captain America, and the other with Sesame Street and Great Space Coaster puppeteer, Jim Martin.

Rhode Island Comic Con was a huge crazy fun event once again... as long as you could get inside, and stay inside. (Alas, there were some major crowd control "hiccups"...) Kevin somehow managed to do both, and shares a full convention report with Kornflake and the Mayor of Chickentown! Featuring: The stars of Clerks and Chasing Amy (they aren't even supposed to be here today!); a Raiders of the Lost Ark reunion panel; Captain Picard on a mechanical bull; Amy the Mermaid meeting her truly outrageous hero; hundreds of crazy awesome costumers (yes, there was even a BOB ROSS costume!); and Flopcast interviews with Panda Valentine (who had free cookies for everyone visiting the Wicked Geeky booth), the Humanists of Rhode Island (who are completely obsessed with George Takei), and The Great Space Coaster's Jim Martin AND Gary Gnu! (That's right -- puppet interview. You're welcome.) Also: Sadie Hawkins Day is this week, and Kornflake has a net.
