Film critic, writer and Movie Squad member, Simon Miraudo takes on the dark side of Australia's film censorship in the Book of the Banned. Did you know Aussie audiences were originally banned from watching bonafide classics The Night of the Hunter, Breathless and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, or that Australians initially saw a watered-down version of Star Wars in cinemas? Book of the Banned is a rigorous, rollicking, riotous and righteously-furious jaunt through film history that reveals the shocking stories behind Australia's classification system and how your favourite movies have been snipped down under, featuring interviews with Margaret Pomeranz, David Stratton, a bunch of ‘banned' filmmakers and even their censors. Welcome, artist Carl Simmons to In-Focus Podcast Number 143. Carl is a New Bedford, Massachusetts musician, visual artist, performance artist, and the South Coast's default local historian! Don Wilkinson, Art Beat columnist wrote in Southcoast Today, that Carl is “… a local historian much concerned with preserving the past but in his artwork, he is clearly not beholden to it. His imagery, be they drawings, watercolors, digital photographs, or short digital animations, instead celebrate the mythology and folklore of the city of New Bedford and its surrounding communities." This time, Carl talks with The Artist Index's performing artists host, Scott Bishop, about his background and reveals more of his life, art, and lots more. The In-Focus Podcasts are up close and personal conversations with the makers, performers, supporters, and cultural impresarios of the remarkable creative community of South Coast Massachusetts including New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Westport, and beyond. People who live in northwest Gwinnett County will have a chance to get a year's worth of free pizza next week. A new Pizza Hut location, which is run by Flynn Restaurant Group, opened at 1550 Buford Highway in Buford on Dec. 23, but it's what the new store has planned for its grand opening festivities next week that will have tongues salivating. The first 25 customers who are in line at the store on Jan. 6 will get free pizza for a year. There are some limits on what pizzas qualify for the free pizza for a year, and what locations the pizzas can be picked up at. The deal is only valid at locations owned by Flynn Restaurant Group — which happens to be Pizza Hut's largest franchisee and which owns 10 other Pizza locations in Gwinnett County. In addition to the Buford location, Flynn Restaurant Group also owns locations in Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Auburn, Dacula, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross and Snellville. It also owns 15 other locations in metro Atlanta, including stores nearby cities such as Cumming, Flowery Branch, Hoschton and Alpharetta. Other limitations on the free pizza for a year offer customers only being able to use it to get two complimentary specialty pizzas or up to three topping large pizzas per month for a year, a limit of one pizza per party, it only being valid on carryout orders, and it only being valid on Thin N' Crispy, original pan and hand tossed crusts. The new store is expected to add 15 new jobs to the Buford and Sugar Hill area. Now in its seventh decade of delivering compelling performances all over the world, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre — recognized by Congress as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World” — will make its return to Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre for a series of shows in mid-February. Led by artistic director Robert Battle, the Ailey troupe will showcase premiers, new productions and repertory favorites for five performances February 16-19 as part of a 22-city North American tour. While each performance will feature different choreographed works — including pieces by Kyle Abraham, Jamar Roberts and Twyla Tharp — each presentation will conclude with the stirring Ailey-choregraphed “Revelations,” which made its debut in 1960 and has been seen by more people than any other modern dance work. Ailey's Fox Theatre residency begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 with Tharp's 1997 piece “Roy's Joys,” a new production of the 1986 production of “Survivors,” Ailey's tribute to Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and “Revelations.  Tickets, starting at $29, are available at the Fox Theatre box office at 660 Peachtree St., or by calling 855-285-8499 or visiting www.alvinailey.org or www.foxatltix.com. The arts in Gwinnett made great strides in 2022 to return to the pre-COVID world, where more than one nonprofit was overjoyed to find their doors still open. As a result, the vitality and pure joy of being back on stage or opening gallery doors was evident in the work art lovers could again absorb. Below are just a few of the highlights that made this writer smile in 2022. There were so many great performances, great exhibitions, great moments that it is hard to choose. Spring was an exciting time for Gwinnett performing arts groups and audiences. ♦ Live Arts Theatre has been nurturing and growing talent for many years. In March, their efforts were enhanced when LAT Actor Rodney Johnson won Best Performer for his work in the play “Sea Wall” at both the Southeastern Theatre Conference and the Georgia Theatre Conference. ♦ The Aurora Theatre was the venue April 2-3 when Atlanta's amazing “Dance Canvas” highlighted the work of seven emerging choreographers. Dance Canvas' Founder and Director, Angela Harris, has a special relationship with the Aurora, having danced in a number of their productions over the years. ♦ Spring was also celebrated by the joining of two of the Southeast's premiere Barber Shop Choruses. Gwinnett's lauded Stone Mountain Chorus and Atlanta Harmony Celebration joined their voices together in a concert at Mountain Park's United Methodist Church on May 21. ♦ Also in May, Duluth photographer Mary Buck traveled to Spain and returned with another treasure trove of images. Buck is known for her extraordinary photos of birds, whether taken in her own backyard or on the other side of the world. Art Beat columns of summer and early fall seemed to be full of young, talented Gwinnett dancers finding success. ♦ Rachael Graham was once a featured performer at Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. Since this summer, she has sported a number of tiaras, dancing and singing as Disney Princesses on their Cruise Line in the Caribbean. ♦ Dreams came true for another ex-Gwinnett Ballet dancer. Runako Campbell is living the dream in New York City where she has performed in a variety of shows, commercials, and with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. ♦ The Hudgens Center is one of Gwinnett's treasured arts entities, and The Hudgens Prize is a great example of how philanthropy can lift emerging artists into the spotlight. This year's winner is sculptor Olu Amoda who received the Prize with its $50,000 cash gift in October. ♦ “The Lion in Winter” was presented in early December by Lionheart Theatre, directed by Brandi Kilgore. Taking on such a renowned and powerful work is a true artistic test and certainly a highlight of Lionheart's season. As 2022 comes to a close, one more young artist is spreading wings and flying into her future. ♦ By the new year, 10-year-old Lillian Sears, who has trained at Duluth's Atlanta Professional Dance Academy, will begin studying at the Paris Opera Ballet. She is the first North American to be accepted into the POB's six-month audition program. Dreams do come true. Here's to 2023! Grayson's girls basketball team defeated Archbishop Chapelle (La.) 58-22 Thursday in the championship game of the St. Pius Christmas Classic. The Rams went 3-0 in the tournament, improving to 10-4 on the season. Tatum Brown was named tournament MVP, and Samara Saunders earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Rams are back at home Friday where they'll open the New Year with a game against Brookwood. Georgia saw its population increase by 1.7% between 2020 and 2022, new numbers from the Census Bureau show. As of July 1, Georgia's population stood at more than 10.9 million, up from about 10.7 million at the same time in 2020. The Peach State's neighbor to the south, Florida, saw its population increase at a higher rate of 3% during the same timeframe, Census numbers show. South Carolina (2.9%), North Carolina (2.4%) and Tennessee (1.8%) also grew more than the Peach State, though Georgia has a higher population than the three states. However, Georgia's growth outpaced that of Alabama, which saw its population increase by 0.9%. Hello and welcome back to ArtBeat radio!  This week's installment features lots of refreshing insight and fun facts about animals with AAW MAP Program student Jack Medved.  Jack shares a detailed interview about his favorite places to go and animals to see, as well as an in-depth informative segment on the nature of sloths.  We hope you enjoy listening!Jack: Roll the questions! Savannah: Why do you like educating people on animals?Jack: I am glad you asked! Not only have I learned about the animals and the habitats themselves, but I have also learned about the experts that know all about animals including the world's best ones: The Kraft Brothers. Also, what I am going to say is now that I have learned through books and online, educating others is very important because animals are very special and so amazing. We have to let others know and to share our knowledge to protect them. Also, another reason bioinspiration which means inspiration from biodiversity. Scientists get ideas from how nature does things. In my animal stories I share important lessons and share what their stories are really all about. You could say I am a genius. Savannah: Jack, how long have you been teaching people about animals?Jack: That isn't even a question you have to ask! The thing is, I have always been teaching people about animals because that's what makes me, me. *omitting part about place of residence*Jack: You could say that I am really great at drawing animals and taking photos as well. My mom has an Instagram here as well. But, there is also one thing here- not only am I good at those things, but taking advice is important as well. After all, all animals are special. Another thing is, it is not always easy to make animals understand us because we can't speak their languages or use their powers of course. Not only can you learn very good things here, but you could say I always go about discovering stuff. Adventurous, brave, and curious, that's me!Savannah: Jack, do you have a favorite place where you like to learn about animals, such as the San Diego Zoo? Jack: I know a lot of places. I go to the San Diego Zoo a lot and SeaWorld among other places. But, everyone has to be educated when it comes to taking care of animals and protecting their habitats. Now do you understand? I am frequently right and true. But, it's because I like to take action because it is the only way to know if your heart is in the right place. Instincts and being gifted- talk about a blessing! Savannah: Do you have any hopes or dreams for the future that you would like to share?Jack: Hopes or dreams? A lot! When it comes to adventures or things to add to my collections or my drawings. But also, it's like the song “When You Wish Upon A Star”. That always reminds me of things. I do have a good memory. You could say I am pretty smart and all. I am protective and caring. Of course, when it comes to knowledge and it comes to me, I can do anything because I always believe in myself. Savannah: Is there anyone who you would like to thank?Jack: Well, my friend that's a funny thing! You see, I am kind of beautiful in my own way. I can come up with ways to do certain things when it comes to answers for that. I thank my self instincts and my heart. I think I have good friends here. This taught me that even the most difficult of us has a fighting chance! When it comes to taking care of the world and protecting it, that shows how special Jack is! Now that you have got all of the questions out, that makes for a happy ending! Please email sandiego@ableartswork.org for the full transcription.

Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! Max: Hello and welcome back to ArtBeat radio!  This week, we will be sharing a short scene called, The Glowing Battle Sword from the Sea, from a series called, Beach Front Stories, created by students in playwriting class at ART Center.   We worked together to brainstorm, rehearse, and record these scenes and we hope you enjoy them!  SCENE 4: THE GLOWING BATTLE SWORD FOUND IN THE SEALights up on four people dressed as Illumination minions from Despicable Me. There are mirrors strategically positioned around the stage to create the effect of more Minions. Other set/prop design elements may be added for the effect. There are ocean sounds in the background and stage hands flapping fabric to emulate waves. The four minions, MINION 1, MINION 2, MINION 3, and MINION 4 stand in front of the waves looking out towards the audience presumably at the rest of the ocean. The four minions begin to communicate in minioneze, making gibberish sounds that start with "B" such as "Bababababoh". The minions communicate through these sounds emphasized with gestures and facial expressions. They are obviously excited. Throughout the "conversation" the minions are pointing into the audience, presumably referencing the ocean.ED enters the stage running. He stops when he sees the minions on the other side of the stage.ED: (Breathing heavy, not in character) I am so sorry, I thought I missed the scene. (Slowly looks at the audience.) Alright, time to get in character. (The actor playing ED shakes their body around and makes some vocal warm-up noises. When they are finished, they are in character for the rest of the scene.) Come over here guys! (ED gestures off-stage.)EDDY and EDD enter, also running.EDDY: Did ya find the sword?ED: No not yet, sorry. (points to minions)But I found... minions.EDD: Can you imagine how many quarters we could sell that sword for?EDDY: I know! I can't wait to use those quarters from this sword to buy a new sword.EDD: Don't you think someone else will try to get it before us?ED: Yeah... I think that is why they are here. (ED points at the minions who are still discussing in minioneze.)EDDY: (yelling) Come over here minions, BaaBaaBooLoo!The four minion slowly walk towards ED, EDD, and EDDY until the two groups face each other.Beat it! We're the ones that are going to get that sword!MINION 1: We need that sword so we can keep it safe!EDD: WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, wait a minute! I thought I was supposed get the sword. It is so awesome and I don't have one.MINION 2: That is not a good reason.ED: Why is it not a good reason?!? He really wants the sword.MINION 3: We need that sword to defeat Vector! He's committing crimes with direction and magnitude.EDDY: You heard 'em boys! We are going to need that sword if we ever want deflection and attitude. The Minions scoff and roll their eyes at EDDY's misunderstanding.MINION 4: Hey look! You heard us first. WE NEED THE SWORD.EDDY: Well if you want the sword you're going to have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. INION 3: Good luck with that! (laughs) While we were arguing we already sent a scuba team down to get the sword.EDDY: What, really??? That ain't fair!MINION 1: Life isn't fair... deal with it.All four minions jump into the "water". Stagehands move the fabric to cover the minions so the audience only sees their hands if they reach up.ED, EDD, and EDDY jump in after them. We see hands reaching out of the water and fighting with one another, indicating a struggle for the sword.Hardcore, melodramatic action music plays loudly during the sequence.EDD emerges from the water. He whimpers and runs out of the water. EDD exits.EDDY emerges holding a plastic sword.EDDY: I got it! I got it! (MINION 1 pops up from the water.)MINION 1: I don't think so.(MINION 1 pops back into the water)MINION 2: (Emerges holding a piece of driftwood giggling.) Hahahahhaha...... oh....(MINION 2 goes back into the water)

My name is Eric and I am excited to share a few songs with you that I wrote and produced myself.  This first is a parody of "Don't Worry be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin, the greatest acapella star ever. Lyrics and musical production by yours truly, along with vocals from my previous music therapist Kassidy.  This next song is inspired by the song "I'm Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves". I, yours truly rewrote the lyrics of this song to reflect my love for the taste of Korean chicken Katsu. This is another parody which I wrote all the lyrics for and chose production. The vocals are by my music therapist Kassidy.  And now, sit back, relax, get in the bathtub if you must, and enjoy "My Bathtub" and "I love Chicken Katsu," written by yours truly and sung by Kassidy.
