Part of breaking free of dieting and moving towards body acceptance is grieving what you're leaving behind. Even if you embrace size acceptance, it's common to still have negative feelings about your own body. You may know that diets don't work, and yet still feel the desire to diet. In today's episode, Abbey talks about size acceptance as a grief process. This is the grief you may experience when you realize diet culture has been selling lies and that you are essentially giving up the fantasy of having an "ideal" body, as well as the life you imagined with it. Abbey shares what happens in and recommendations to cope with each stage of grief. Be sure to rate and subscribe! Join the Fork Diet Culture Community! Clarkisha Kent is a Nigerian American writer, culture critic, former columnist, and author of Fat Off, Fat On: A Big Bitch Manifesto. Committed to telling inclusive stories via unique viewpoints from nigh-infancy, she is fascinated with using storytelling and cultural criticism not as a way to “overcome” or “transcend” her unique identities (as a FAT, bisexual, and disabled Black African woman), but as a way to explore them, celebrate them, affirm them, and most importantly, normalize them and make the world safe enough for people who share them to exist. As a University of Chicago graduate with a B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies and English, she brings with her over eight years of pop culture analysis, four years of film theory training, and a healthy appetite for change. Her writing has been featured in outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Essence, gal-dem, PAPER, BET, HuffPost, MTV News, The Root, and more. She is also the creator of #TheKentTest and the co-creator of The Kelli & Kat Test—both of which are media litmus tests designed to evaluate the quality of representation that exists for Black women, women of color, and fat [Black] women respectively.  Currently, Kent is working on a novel about a Black female outlaw and a TV comedy pilot about an immortal familiar.

Today I’m talking with Jeanne Courtney, a psychotherapist in private practice in El Cerrito, California, specializing in LGBTQ issues, anxiety, depression and body image from a Health at Every Size® perspective. She’s the author of a paper published in the Journal of Lesbian Studies called Size Acceptance as a Grief Process: Observations from Psychotherapy with Lesbian Feminists. Jeanne was first introduced to the size acceptance movement over 30 years ago and we talk about what changes she has seen during that time. She also talks about how almost every woman who walks into her office, regardless of what brought them into therapy initially, eventually reveals some form of body shame.    Show Highlights:   Her introduction in the size acceptance movement in the 1980’s How she was skeptical at first and then came to see how feminism intersected with body size Lesbian feminists led the way early on in the movement There is a body shame epidemic, rather than an obesity epidemic A nurse in an oncology department congratulated her dying wife on her weight loss that was due to cancer Intellectual insight around body oppression doesn’t necessarily lead to emotional change Size acceptance as a grief process; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance Part of size acceptance is accepting that rampant size discrimination exists. Shifting anger at the self to anger at the world’s fatphobia The overlap between how fatness and queerness gets conceptualized The narrative that sexual orientation can be changed, or is indicative of emotional problems is similar to the discourse around fat bodies Disordered eating of all kinds isn’t always visible How under-eating always gets privileged  Body hatred messages being passed down from generation to generation How doctors get stumped when you ask them to explain the science of how exactly weight loss will help your health   Links & Resources:    Jeanne Courtney’s website Size Acceptance as a Grief Process
