In today's episode of The Curious Therapist Show, it's part 2 of how to set boundaries. I would suggest listening to part 1 if you haven't yet and then come back:)Boundaries are limits we set to protect our energy- emotional, mental, and physical. One of my fav quotes about boundaries is:"Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others" (Brene Brown)This really sums up why so many people struggle to set boundaries. Our fears of rejection, of "letting others down", the guilt we may feel saying "no", the fear of a missed opportunity, maybe even FOMO (fear of missing out). Perhaps there's complexities here too...family or cultural impacts where we we're taught to self-sacrifice and people please.A thought I had in preparing for this discussion was reflecting on the developmental stage where 2 or 3 years old ask "why!" 27 times an hour and they say "no" to every question. LOL. I think we need to channel some toddler energy here! We need to ask "why" we're doing something and say "no" more often. So join Brooke and I for part 2 today! On today's episode, I share all about emotions, how ignoring and suppressing them is making us sick, and what "making space" for emotions actually means. What I witness people do every day is push their emotions away, suppress them, judge them, label themselves as "low vibe" or dramatic or weak, try to avoid the emotion with fake positivity. Or they use some good ole distraction...grabbing the phone to doomscroll, overworking, overcommitting, or pretending to feel ok. Really what I see is people not FEELING their emotion, but rather thinking about the emotion and how to get it to go away.Cue a busy mind, rumination, and ineffective "problem solving"All of this keeps us stuck. It keeps the emotion stuck, the energy stuck in our bodies, and it robs us of the wisdom that our emotions can bring. After all, beneath every feeling is a NEED. One of my fav quotes sums it up perfectly:_“Beneath every behaviour is a feeling. And beneath each feeling is a need. And when we meet that need, rather than focus on the behaviour, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom." ~Ashleigh Warner_⠀So this is what I'm teaching in this episode. How do we sit with the feeling and how do we honour the underlying need? Most of us weren't taught this growing up, so it's a skill set that needs practiced! One of my fav clips (along with so many other therapists) that I discuss in this episode is one from "Inside Out 2". Find out my thoughts on this scene and what it can teach us.I also share types of anger and that the research shows, when we suppress adaptive anger, it lowers our immunity. In today's episode, we talk all about attachment theory and how our child selves learn to adapt to feel safe and loved. In this episode, I discuss:-attachment styles (and point out that they are over simplified on social media)-common ways we adapt to have our attachment needs met-how our childhood relationships can impact on our adult attachmentsThis is much deeper than love languages or "acts of service". Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with knowing how you and your partner feel loved. But attachment shapes what's underneath that. Do I feel lovable? Do I feel enough or too much? Do I push people away, become "too needy"? Do I start arguments instead of sharing my sadness? All of this is attachment related! Today's episode of the Curious Therapist Show is all about rumination.Rumination is when we think about negative things, worries, upsetting issues or problems over and over again. We can get stuck...like a hamster on a wheel! Most the time, rumination centres on past mistakes, current problems or future worries.I see this happening for people often at night. Their head hits the pillows and everything that's wrong comes barreling through their minds like an unwelcome parade. In this episode, I describe what rumination is, why we do it and ways to get unstuck.Reach Vanessa:To connect with Vanessa:Find Vanessa on Facebook: (2) FacebookFind Vanessa on Instagram: Vanessa Preston (@vanessa_preston_) • Instagram photos and videosCheck out Vanessa's website to find a freebie and all about her intuitive eating and body image programs: Vanessa Preston (podia.com)Or her practice website:Email Vanessa when requested topics or if you'd like to share your story on the podcast: vanessa@greenlifepsychology.comResources:Regulation:4-7-8 Calm Breathing Exercise | Relaxing Breath Technique | Extended Breaths | Pranayama Exercise (youtube.com)Box breathing relaxation technique: how to calm feelings of stress or anxiety (youtube.com)The Best 5-Senses Grounding Techniques for Anxiety Relief (psychcentral.com)Article referenced:Rumination: A Cycle of Negative Thinking Meditation Episodes:Episode 78Episode 79Disclaimer:This podcast represents the opinions of Vanessa Preston and her guests to the show. In this episode, I interview Ardelle Lee.Ardelle is a nutritionist, body image coach and intuitive eating coach…a dear friend of mine…and coming to us from Canada.Ardelle and I speak all about wellness culture and how this shows up for women especially during pregnancy and motherhood. If you're not sure what wellness culture means, have a listen!Think:The belief that to be a good person, you must pursue and achieve perfect health.Guilt and shame and food rules.Expensive supplements with little or NO evidence.Pressure to have a regulated nervous system 100 percent of the time.Having to do a perfect 21 step morning routine where you do yoga on a bed of kale, meditate, then have bone broth, then take 55 supplements.OrHaving a baby and thinking you've already failed because you're not breastfeeding or didn't have a vaginal birth or aren't feeding your baby 100 percent organic, homegrown baby food in a glass jar. While there's nothing wrong with pursuing health, if your pursuit of health is fuelled by anxiety, fear, shame, never feeling it's enough….wellness culture has infiltrated your belief system. To connect with Ardelle:Aromas & Avocados - Intuitive Eating and Body Image Coaching (aromasandavocados.com)

Today we are talking about two popular food rules that many of us struggled with or currently are struggling with. And with it being a popular time of year to set New Year's resolutions, I thought this topic would support you in setting goals focused on health-promoting behaviours instead of focusing on the scale.I want to invite you to set your goals from a place of love. This could look like improving sleep hygiene, reducing stress, and incorporating more play. What if you replaced shrinking your body with something like that and just see what happens…So what are food rules?I describe food rules as self-imposed guidelines related to eating certain foods or to eating in general. Usually, these guidelines are related to the timing, frequency, amount, setting, or some other condition in which one does or doesn't allow themselves to eat.Oftentimes, women operate from these food rules subconsciously but unfortunately, these rules are the reason you may be struggling with the all-or-nothing approach or the binge-restrict cycle.Identifying what rules you hold onto is an empowering step in healing your relationship with food and becoming an intuitive eater. My wish for you is that this year brings you joy, peace and happiness without any more fad diets with false promises! What you will learn by listening to this episode:1. A different approach to setting your health goals for 20232. What food rules are and why they are keeping you stuck in the restrict-binge cycle3. The two most common food rules I see among my clients4. PURCHASE MY NEWEST MASTERCLASS BELOW!https://www.vanessa-preston.com/offers/nkgUFA8KEmail me with any questions:vanessa@greenlifepsychology.comIn today's episode, my sometimes cohost, Reva and I dive into why creativity is such a valuable aspect of our adult life. Any life you're creating is creativity.Creative outlets can come in so many forms such as cooking, writing, social media, decorating, painting, poetry, and even business. It's less about doing and more about being in the creative mode. The research is clear, getting into creative outlets can reduce stress, lead to feeling more productive, connects us with nonverbal parts of us, increases happiness and introduces more ways to have fun.As beneficial as creativity is, there are a few things that can get in the way of us trying to get creative again. Hustle culture and capitalism often steals our creativity capacity. Our inner critic can also interfere with it. It pops up when we are doing something brave or when we are about to do something vulnerable. Our inner child who fears doing something wrong or not being perfect can also make getting creative feel Intimidating. As adults we tend to fear being a beginner again.Getting creative requires a level of bravery.A common misconception is that creativity cannot be cultivated, and that instead some lucky people have an innate sense of creativity. But this assumption is wrong. According to classical psychology research, there are three main types of creativity: exploratory, transformational, and combinational creativity. To cultivate creativity we invite you to begin by recognising where you're already creative to challenge any narrative that “I'm not a creative person.” Reflect on what might be enjoyable- painting, writing, dancing, cooking? And lastly give yourself-permission to be imperfect. Be brave enough to suck at something. Remember to focus on the process of expression instead of the outcome. So what brave hobbies are you going to incorporate? What you'll learn in this episode:What creativity is and can beBenefits of being creativeCommon barriers that prevent us from being creativeHow to get creative againSource discussed: "The Art of Body Acceptance" by Ashley Bennett
The reason I'm talking about trauma today is because it can be a huge part of our relationship with food and our body image.Trauma is not necessarily the event that happens. It's how it gets stored physically, and psychologically.Trauma impacts the capacity to make sense of the past, inward sensations (body sensations), environmental (outside sensations), and the stories you tell yourself (what meaning you create). How it gets stored in our nervous systems can lead to consequences such as fatigue, dissociation from the body, depression, anxiety etc.Trauma can leave us repeating loops to reinforce the view of self and the world. If you learned you're not good enough, you're not safe, you're a failure, you'll subconciously repeat situations to reinforce that. This is where I see the connection between trauma and dieting. When we choose to deprive and restrict ourselves from food, and as research supports, we'll inevitably emotionally eat, binge eat and “fall off the plan” which reinforces the belief, “I'm a failure” and “I can't trust myself.”I think food obsession (dieting) is an attempt to feel in control in some way when there's something you're experiencing that feels out of control such as bad marriage or terrible boss at work. Dieting, or food and exercise obsession can provide an element of control.Dieting might be a way of calming your nervous system and food might be the only source of pleasure for you that feels safe or accessible. What to Do Instead:The first step is to get honest about your relationship with food. Do you fall into the on/off wagon pattern, or perfectionism around food, or feeling out of control? What need is this meeting? What thoughts are you reinforcing about yourself? Is your current relationship with food actually serving your emotional and mental health? If you need more support in your relationship with food and learning to trust yourself, I have a new offer coming early 2023 which will include an option for 1:1 coaching sessions with me.Make sure you stay in the know by joining my email list and you'll get the freebie, Top 5 Reasons Your Diet Keeps Failing. What you'll learn in this episode:Understand what trauma isExamples of complex trauma and why you're stuck in the fight or freeze stateThe connection between trauma and dietingWhat you can do to begin healing your food and body traumaTop 5 Reasons Your Diet Keeps Failing
