I'm your host Mitch Roshong and this is episode 118 of our series. For today's episode, we welcome back Assistant Professor at Lehman College, Dr. Sean Stein Smith. Sean is also the founder of the Institute for Blockchain and Crypto Asset Research and is a forbes.com contributor in the area of crypto and blockchain. In previous episodes, Sean has joined us to talk about different types of blockchain and its uses. In the conversation you're about to hear now, he talks with Adam specifically about accounting for crypto assets. Let's head over and listen to their conversation now. Adam: (00:51) So Sean in your recent article for Forbes, you talk about how Bitcoin is hitting an all time high. What does this mean for an organization's accounting as not every organization is ready to move into cryptocurrency? Sean: (01:02) Yeah and so with the price of Bitcoin and all of the other altcoins, really at their all time highs or very close to them, all of this is having a huge impact on how companies are trying to adapt, navigate in trying to onboard Bitcoin and other crypto options as a form of doing payment. Right? Because it’s always important to always keep in mind that even though Bitcoin headline prices are obviously headline news, the original idea of Bitcoin and the whole blockchain crypto asset space, it was to develop basically a alternative way to conduct payments. And it hasn't really played out that way and a big part of that is that it's awfully hard for certain firms out there to actually take a Bitcoin and other crypto as a form of payment. And I mean, there are all kinds of IT issues on how the computer systems have to interoperate, but the real issue from sort of our angle here is that the current accounting treatment really makes no business sense from a tax point of view, from a gap point of view, from a IFRS point of view, there really is a issue and a headwind out there that I believe and in all of the anecdotal conversations that I have is honestly proving to be a big headwind that firms are having a hard time trying to figure out how to one, take in these agreements and then two, after they have them what to do with them. Adam: (02:40) So is it kind of like the Wild West out there since there are no crypto specific authoritative accounting standards? Sean: (02:46) Well, there are no crypto specific authoritative standards yet, either under gap or IFRS but there is this consensus that apparently has been reached, led by the top firms trying to sort of get something out there right. And I totally understand why they were trying to get some sort of consensus out there via the white papers conversations, all the rest to have something to answer external client questions with, but the current treatment of Bitcoin and other crypto as a indefinite lived intangible asset, which kind of sounds good on paper, right? Because Bitcoin and other crypto are intangible and they have no fixed economic life. But outside of that, it honestly makes no sense because it doesn't really reflect the economic realities on the ground. And I won't go into too too much depth here, but if I have an indefinite, intangible asset on the books like Goodwill, I have to do tests for possible impairment losses every time, a change in the business outlook really causes that to happen. Okay great, but if I have Bitcoin on the books, as we all know, Bitcoin and other crypto assets have a little bit of price volatility in there. And so if it drops by 20%, 10%, which it has done multiple times, I, as the firm holding these assets now on the books, I have to do the test for impairment, write down the asset books, the cost. Okay, so far so good. But on the other hand, if and when Bitcoin goes up by 10%, 20%, 200%, I can't do anything with that under the current rules. So it's not so much the Wild Wild West out there. It's almost artificially trying to fit a square peg into a round hole Adam, right because I can't mark up correctly the current market value of the assets that I hold, or in other words, under the current accounting, consensus that has been reached in the face of no crypto specific guidance, I'm basically forced to hold these assets on the books at an artificially lower level, no matter what happens outside in the marketplace. Adam: (05:29) Now you mentioned impairment in that last answer, how does that come into play with cryptocurrency? Could you go into a little more detail? Sean: (05:36) Sure. And so probably the most obvious case as to how it could come into play is if I received payment in Bitcoin at the end of 2020 or even early 2021, Bitcoin and the other altcoins out there were on an upswing, right. They had all increased in price quite a bit. During that back half of 2020, and into the first quarter of 2021, obviously there are some pullbacks and that's where the issue really does pop up. So there was one specific weekend early in the first quarter of 2021 where the price of Bitcoin dropped over 20%. And so if I, as a firm head chosen to take Bitcoin as a form of customer payment and then also chosen to hold those Bitcoin in a hot wallet, cold wallet, all the rest of us actually hold them at the firm. So I've been paid in crypto, got the back office and go to work, he was able to interoperate with my AR AP treasury all the rest. So now I'm holding Bitcoin on the books. Okay. Then if it drops by 20%, I think it was 24% over a four or five day period. I have to book that impairment loss. Because that's an obvious change in the asset itself, market conditions, business conditions that then triggers this whole test for impairment. And so if I am correctly trying to apply the current accounting consensus, again not tailored for crypto assets, I would go ahead and I would write down that asset. I would impair the asset on the balance sheet, lowering that asset value, and then also book the cost on the income statement as an expense in the current period. Okay. Fine. But, and then if the price of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency recovers or goes up, what you did, I can't do anything, I cannot under the current accounting consensus for Bitcoin and other crypto as an indefinite lived intangible asset, I cannot mark up or I cannot revalue that asset. So an impairment loss is a permanent entry. And so even though the market price might have recovered or even exceeded my cost or the old basis that I had in this asset, I cannot accurately reflect that on the balance sheet. Adam: (08:29) So what if an organization wanted to hold cryptocurrency as like a long-term asset, does that kind of change their outlook on it? Sean: (08:36) Well, I would say that really there have been some very interesting headlines out there of firms like Tesla, Microstrategy, Square, have been buying up Bitcoin, and I would assume other cryptocurrencies to some extent, but they have all come out publicly supporting Bitcoin and its use and as a store of value, currency, economic empowerment, all the rest. And I would argue that really those firms and those positions are twofold. One, is to provide them with the liquidity, if they have customers, either individuals or institutions who want to transact in Bitcoin, right. To be able to give them that ability to actually do so. And then two, I would say that really there’s a thought out there that in order to make a return right, because there's the whole cost of capital conversation. And even though interest rates on debt are at all time lows, for the most part, there still is a cost of capital. If we are talking about trying to raise equity and the cost of holding cash on a corporate balance sheet, all of that still has a cost linked to it. And so really, there are two angles here Adam, one is that these institutions could be holding it for the duration, right. It could be holding it for the medium term, longer term to try to enable customers to easily transact with them in Bitcoin and potentially in other cryptocurrencies. Or it could be that they're basically trying to hedge against some of the wider economic forces out there. Right. Be it the quantitative easing here in the US, be it the bond buying programs, be it the economic aid packages being passed through right now, which while absolutely needed are going to ultimately have an impact on inflation, the value of the dollar and the overall cost of capital in terms of equity capital and debt capital at some point. So I would say that while every firm is obviously different, I would say that there is this idea that if you're buying up these large stakes in Bitcoin and possibly other cryptocurrencies, it's more of a, to your question, a play for the longer term. And to kind of sort of wrap up this point here, it's also, I believe, a potential way to try to encourage accounting policy makers be at the FASB, IASB or some other entity out there to try to bring this whole crypto accounting conversation off of the back burner and onto the front burner in terms of, okay fine so we have this new asset class, this new potentially asset category out there, and how do we have these assets and these different financial instruments be shown correctly and accurately on our financial statements? Right. Cause our conversation here today is focused on specific Bitcoin crypto holdings, but there's a whole other industry out there, Defi or open finance basically, and this whole idea of the decentralized crypto exchange, enabling folks to transact, finance, lend, gain access to capital markets in a decentralized manner. So all of that is a sort of long winded way of entering the fact that if there are companies out there that are truly buying crypto or are truly taking crypto as a form of payment, with an eye towards the future, I would say that really, they probably are not as concerned with the impact of this current accounting consensus right now, because on the one hand they are buying it for the longer term and two, I do believe and I am confident that all of this action and activity and debate is going to ultimately force entities and individuals at places like the FASB, IASB and other policymaking agencies to be more proactive in trying to get crypto accounting up to par. Adam: (13:26) Do you think that, or how long do you think it'll take for them to get on board? Sean: (13:31) I mean, that's an excellent question there. I know that, actually I was the co-author of I believe what was the last agenda request item to the FASB back in 2019, specifically on this issue. And I do know that in 2019 and 2020, FASB has come out and basically said, that it's not material enough yet for them to be bothered basically. And I mean basically, and I would say that all that outlook is still probably the prevailing one at different agencies, including the FASB, IASB, all the rest. I would say that the current moves, acquisitions, and corporate allocations of capital to Bitcoin and other crypto are invariably going to have some sort of influence and impact on, how do policy makers approach crypto and hopefully it's going to happen sooner rather than later. Adam: (14:43) It almost seems like we're moving toward like the open market system that you were talking about before, even like FASB or IFRS or anything or US gap will have their standards in place the open market will take on before that even touches it. Sean: (14:59) Well I mean, I think that all of us are currently living in a very interesting time, right? Where an entirely new asset class and an entirely new way of transacting business and an entirely new way of trying to finance entities is emerging right in front of us. And obviously these, policy makers, standard setters have to be careful in how they try to develop standards, right? And so I am acutely aware of the time and the effort that goes into these processes, but to your point, I do think that this is going to be a time where there are going to be certain actors into the private sector or certain States, Wyoming is often talked about as a sort of innovator out there trying to encourage, innovative policy-making, try to encourage innovative firms to come there to incorporate and to operate. So again, I do think it's going to be sort of a push and pull here between the private sector and different sorts of policy makers trying to get out in front of these issues. But I do have confidence in the fact that ultimately we are going to get crypto specific accounting guidance. The cost to acquire a customer is the heavy lifting. Why wouldn’t they want to give you more business? It’s more convenient for them to use you in the process. It’s not to their advantage to have five different contractors in this process. Wouldn’t they rather have him control the project and be responsible for it? Sean emphasizes that “Customers want convenience, deadlines, and adhering to a budget more than any other thing.” They perceive that it will be simpler to hire multiple people or that they’ll save money. But speed and the right outcome will override money any time. Sean establishes a budget they can bet their life on. He will guard their money like oxygen. He’s giving them the convenience of having only one person to be accountable to. Once you bring other people in, it becomes a nightmare. So Sean uses his own subcontractors/employees. What if the client insists on using their own contractors? How does Sean vett his clients? Listen to hear what Sean thinks you should do. Never turn down a “yes” Sean implores you: Never turn down a “Yes” of a target customer. The customer is saying “We want to see how this goes.” He knows he will exceed their expectations so he’ll gain all the money later anyway. What do you gain by leaving? You’ll lose a customer indefinitely. If they only want a small project completed and you’re still getting your hourly rate? Just say yes. There is no job too small if you have your target customer. You are trying to collect the most people that like and need what you offer. Sean loves having small jobs in-between large jobs. It’s a great way to introduce your business to a target customer and develop a relationship that can lead to more work down the road. Why you need to employ the right advertising Sean knows that their advertising lets people know that they’re not cheap from the get-go. That’s the point. They run regional super-bowl ads and radio ads. They have brand new vans. They have a huge corner office. You can define your credibility from the beginning with the right advertising. His target customer needs to understand that every purchase won’t be the least expensive thing. If they’re going to buy everything from Wayfair, they don’t need Sean. The image you put out in your advertising can project pricing. You can frame your ads to make yourself look the next tier that you are. What are some more of Sean’s genius marketing strategies? And today we've got some guests from, from Ruckus talking about carbon warfare. It's actually quite timely for me as a couple of friends that asked me about some carbon repair work they wanted to have done, and I had no idea how to approach it. So gentlemen, welcome to the show. Thanks for, thanks for having us. Can you guys start by introducing yourself? Take away. All right. Yeah. As Dan said, I'm Shawn and the owner and founder, and I started ruckus over 12 and a half years ago. Yeah. My name is Dan and I am our repair strategist and customer success person Right on Shawn. What was the impetus behind starting Ruckus? Okay. Is kind of a long rambling story of, I was 24 at the time, fresh out of engineering school and really liked bikes. And didn't really fit the traditional mold of being an engineer. I'm not an office guy per se. Um, I can't spend all my day on a computer, so I would like working with my hands a lot, really wanted to create a business where I could work with my hands, but also kind of create the ideas that were locked up in my crazy head Right on. And were you, did you start it off as sort of a one man show? Oh yeah. Robot or two. I probably had a Roomba at the time that Rubin's ever around, but I always try to keep a balance of one human and one robot at every time. There you go. That's the engineering year. Right? Exactly. So I was excited to talk to you guys about carbon bike repair, cause it is a little bit of a mystery to me, how it all works. And you know, you think about cracking a carbon frame or at least I did prior to this conversation that, you know, the thing's hosed it's, you know, I'm never going to be able to ride it again. Can you talk about the types of repairs that are possible for carbon frames? Did Dan you're good at this one? Yeah. I mean, it's, for us, it's kind of the circumstance of we can repair almost anything, but it's only really, we take it to the point where we think it's safe to do so. A lot of times, you know, things that will decline, for example, our car and bike situations where a rider will get into an accident and, you know, bikes that have four or five visible damages. Um, technically we could repair something like that, but we don't really deem it safe to do so. Um, that's like the extent of things that we won't do. Um, but for the most part, you know, we do basic tube repairs. We do dropout replacements. Uh, we can do full bottom bracket, repairs and replacements as well. Um, you know, we, we will, a lot of things that we've been seeing recently, uh, our tire rubbed damages on gravel bikes, for example, people, the combination of too wide of tires in a given condition that isn't suitable, um, front derailer mounts have been coming off. Boy, am I missing anything? Sean? There's a lot. We do. We do a, we do a lot, a lot, a lot of different types of repairs on a very regular basis. Yeah, it's pretty, very, but you know, at the same point, it's just, we see the same bike over and over or same bikes over and over and over again. So it's some days it feels a little bit not honest. And you kind of forget that. We see some of the most interesting things on the bike side. Like we already got a brand new specialized 20, 20 Shivan and it's like, I haven't even seen this bike online. It's got this kind of cool, uh, course of the camera. Cool. Like vertical cross cross fork, and you look at it and you're like, okay, bikes are getting crazy again. It looks just like that. It looks just like the Lotus track bike fork. Oh yeah, Yeah. It's that dual, that dual bladed thing. So yeah, we do. Um, it's, it's again, it's like we can, we can repair almost anything, but we choose, you know, specifically based on whether it's safe or not to do Right. What did that poor individual with the brand new Shiv do to his bike to put it in your hands Shipping damage hasn't even been built for assembly yet. And it's just getting shipped across the country. And I don't know a lot of shipping companies that are generally fine, but you know, you throw enough probability into it and you know, there may be 10%, 5% of scenarios and you're going to be on the losing end every now and then. So shipping insurance is always good. So what does that process look like on your end? So let's just say I've cracked my chain stay and maybe, you know, I see some damage, but I don't see a hole. Do I send it up to you? And do I get some sort of analysis back for me to consider if the repair is something I want to move forward with? Yeah. Where we usually start with something like this as we'll have the customer send us pictures, um, and a variety of ways, email, we, our number also gets texts as well. So it's, it's an easy way to communicate with people, but we usually start with photos. Um, on the odd chance we can actually tell, um, you know, through a photo only, um, if the bike is okay, we'll just tell the customer to monitor it. But most things start with the photo. Um, and then we take out a case and we'll bring in the bike. And if the area is in question of if it's broken or not, it goes through the ultrasound scan process. Um, and through that, we can determine, you know, empirically within a thousandth of an inch, whether the bike is actually damaged or not. Um, and then after that's all said and done, we'll communicate with the customer again, if the bike is okay, it's, you know, ready to send home at that point, if they want, uh, if they want to paint, touch up, we can do that. Or if the bike actually needs to be repaired, they'll get a confirmation of the original estimate at that point. A and then we can Begin the repair process if it's a normal tube repair, uh, at pretty much at that time. So yeah, it usually starts out with photos and a conversation of what, you know, the rider was doing at the time, what the damage looks like and kinda on top of that, like we've seen over 13,000 cases. So we were pretty good idea if someone says, Oh, I have this type of bike and this type of bike and they go, Oh yeah. Is your seat stay broke. Okay, Cool. Gotcha. So when I imagine ultrasound, I'm thinking of a doctor and a pregnant woman and that little gel, what goes on when you ultrasound a bike? I mean, that's exactly, that's exactly it. It's, it's a very, it's a it's that. So Sean has a couple of fluid that he puts over the area and our transducer is, is what, two and a half to 2.5, right? Shawn, 2.5 millimeters in diameter. No, it's four it's four. Okay. So he has a four millimeter transducer that he puts over the area and it puts a wave sound into the bike and comes back. The readout would be different from something that you would see in the hospital. Uh, it's more of a wave form than actually an image, but Shawn is able to tune the wave based on the specific layup of the bike to gain the information that he would need to determine if something would be broken. So if I had to, I say I had a really bad scratch, you know, from a rock. And I clearly went through the paint and into the carbon fiber. Is that analysis able to tell you, you know, from that wall thickness, you've gone halfway through it or three quarters of the way through it. Yeah, exactly. So kind of how that works is the ultrasound is Dan said, it kicks out a wave the way it penetrates through the carbon bounces off the backside. And it comes back to my transducer. That's kind of how we read it. And if we hit something that would be an air pocket or Boyd, or, you know, if there was less material, the screen's going to show that and we have to, you know, we have to interpolate it a little bit or interpret it quite a bit to kind of convert that squiggly wave form into, you know, a bicycle, but it's kind of the gist of it. And is there, is there some amount of carbon kind of deep scratch that is okay and livable and you'll message back to the customer, Hey, you know, you're only 15% down. It's probably safe. Yeah, definitely. I mean, it's, it kind of, every single bike is different. Every single rider is different. Every single location is different. Like, you know, it doesn't matter the material per se, but almost every bike, the wall thickness of whether it's steel or aluminum or titanium or carbon changes so much throughout a bike. You know, we have, we see some mountain bikes nowadays that are over three millimeters thick of carbon, which is insanely thick. Wow. And then we have certain seat stays that are our top tubes that are only 0.7 millimeters, which is like next to nothing. So everything's gotta be kinda comparative or you kinda look at the whole picture of like, okay. And then, you know, we don't like to think of like the rider too much. We like to think of just making sure everybody's safe. So we don't really take into account if someone's like, well, I don't really hit too big of jumps. And you're like, you know, we talked to some guys up in Bellingham or Whistler and you know, to them and I don't, I personally don't leave the ground. So anything leaving the ground is a big job. So Yeah, absolutely interesting. And so the, can the range of repair work go from, you know, that deep scratch that has affected structural integrity to a complete break in a tube? Oh yeah. The entire tube could be severed off or even missing. We've replaced entire tubes before, you know, it's a little more severe. Um, but really, you know, there's not a lot of limits and that's kinda one of the cooler things about composites as a material versus like some of the metals is, you know, your repair work is so much smaller. Um, it's more of a localized repair versus having to replace an entire tube, you know, with a metal bike, you know, you can repair any metal bike as well. Um, but it typically takes an entire to replacement. So it's surprisingly way more expensive. You know, most composite repairs are about 500 bucks or less on average, but you know, metal repairs, you're closer to a thousand. So let's, let's take a couple of the different scenarios. Let's stick one on the one hand, which is just maybe a, a piercing or a scratch that is, is definitely dangerous and needs to be repaired. What does that repair look like? How do you actually address my carbon frame with the materials you're going to use to really support it? Good question. Um, it's, as far as the repair goes, our process for let's say it, you know, some something that we've seen a number of times is a very piercing strike on, on a down tube. Uh, but Santa's mountain bike, especially recently, the way that all of the down tubes are being extruded from the bottom bracket with more of an exaggerated curve, we see a lot of damage to that area. So the process for our repair is repeatable, but not necessarily, not necessarily always similar if you know, we're doing the same steps towards every bike, but every damage is different. So it's not exactly the same process. Um, so the cost options that we provide are not tuned towards the repair. It's all on the finishing side. So basically every normal tube repair that we do, we'll give our customers a range of options from just a basic mat, black paint or a Mason or basic matte black vinyl wrap to a full paint match. And that customer is getting the same exact safe repair lifetime, but we're going to give them a different option of price depending on what they want it to look like. Because some people don't care. You know, some people are like, Hey, it's my mountain bike. I'm going to beat the crap out of it. I'll take the $500 repair rather than the full paint match. You know, that, that works fine for somebody they're getting the same fix either way. So if I've pierced my frame, um, is it sort of like you're taking some carbon material and almost bonding a bandaid of carbon over top of that, It's a little more involved than that. It's, you know, carbon composite repairs better on the aerospace industry for a long, long time. So there's already proven standards written by the American society of mechanical engineers or American society of testing and materials. And we really follow up pretty similar guidelines of repairing tubes is a little more complicated, especially tubes of insane geometry that bikes have nowadays, whether they're, you know, ovals schools, squares, or rectangles around. Um, but it all kind of starts with, you know, we evaluate that whole area and we kind of have to like map out how far the damage goes for starters. And then after we map out the damage extent, we got to kind of map out the repair extent, which is usually extents. You know, let's call it three inches and every direction around it. And what we do is we then kind of excavate or machine out all the broken fiber and we get rid of it. You know, it's not doing anything there's not really much you can do with it to kind of repurpose it. So then we kind of machine out all that area and sand it all out and get rid of it. And now we apply a brand new carbon fiber on top of it and taper it out through the entire tube to make sure the entire tube is completely strong repaired, and we're not creating any stress risers anywhere on the bike. Gotcha. And then we add one of our listeners write in and ask about, you know, the completely broke the stay. Are you basically then sort of sawing off the, you know, the completely mangled sections and adding in an entirely new tube? Uh, we could be, we do a lot of three D printing in house. We have a big, we've always had a big strap, like professional, industrial Stratasys 3d print machines. So we can pro um, or three D print and design molds and tools and inserts. And you know, and the hardest part with honestly with bikes is in maintaining the integrity of alignment. You know, if there's a slight variation at your dropout, um, your wheel's going to be crooked and with everybody's running huge tires right now, which is great. But if you then have a, like a, a little bit of a dropout misalignment and then multiply that over 13 inches of a wheel radius give or take, and that exacerbates the angle so bad that it pushes your wheels straight into your chance. So the hardest part is sometimes alignment more than anything, just making sure, you know, we're trying to align kind of thin air with certain repairs. You're like, well, I need to put this seats. I need to put a seat, stay back in the frame, but there's a huge gap in between. So how do we fill that gap? There's a lot of puzzles involved Frame alignment tools. Yeah. We probably have almost every tool you can, you end up having frame alignment tools to help in that process? Yeah. We have framed jigs. We've had a lot of custom built tools. We have, you know, end mills for milling and mitering. We have drill presses of, you know, we have almost every tool you can think of. Like, don't forget the lady, boy, the lady boy, which so we can lay it all around tools and answers. Um, repair is more about like being inventive and tool creative than anything. You're like, how are we going to hold this shape? That's not a shit, you know, like a wacky school goal type thing in alignment, or we have, we have two granite tables as well for alignment that are, I think they're done to it like 10,000, no more than that 0.000001 of an inch of alignment. So we can always plot things on there and make standoff blocks or use dial indicators. So before, before we move on from, uh, from Greg's question of being able to repair that seed stay, this is actually a, uh, the case in point of an example of where we wouldn't do Greg's repair until we performed a full inspection on this bike. Um, you know, 45 mile an hour front flip that bike didn't come to a complete stop immediately. Uh, I've I've had a crash similar to this, uh, about 10 years ago and it was really, really bad. Um, so we would basically say that this bike is going to start out at the full ultrasound inspection for the frame and fork and pending us finding damages elsewhere in the frame. Then, then we would begin to consider the other repairs on this bike because that's the beauty of ultrasound. And that's why I think we shine as an organization is we're not only fixing things that are visible, we're actually able to impuricably discern other damages in the bike. So we're not just guessing that one area is going to be okay. We're able to see every other area on the bike if it's okay or not. And you know, a lot of times we'll find in these kinds of situations, we'll find the fork to be broken, um, based on, you know, the bike tumbling or the steer tube getting, getting tweaked, um, and a lot of our customers, once they find out that the fork is broken, if it's an older bike, they'll decide not to do the repair because it's going to be very difficult to source a, you know, proprietary fork from 2013. So not only are we keeping people safe, uh, for a low costs, we're able to steer people in the direction of a new safe bike, you know, because now that they know that they're not going to be able to get these parts anymore. So that's, this is a scenario that we see all the time of there's an visual damage, but we need to take a step back and look at everything before we commit, just to make sure that everything is safe and able to work well down the road together. So yeah, that's something that we see almost, you know, I see this like two or three times a week talking to our customers. Yeah. I think I would be a bit torn up if I cracked my carbon frame and I would just be grappling with, you know, do I send it to you guys for repair? Or at what point does it make sense to upgrade? It's a tough call, but it's, you know, many of us are riding bikes that we absolutely love and would hate to sort of send out to pasture earlier than they need to, you know, in an ideal scenario, I want to ride a bike hard, love it, and then pass it on to someone else who can love it. Correct. And for me, one of the things that I always say is if you have bought your bike within the past five years, and aren't dreaming of a component of a serious component upgrade, then it makes sense to fix your bike because that's usually the thing is if you decide to replace your bike, you know, and that's been made in the past couple of years, there's going to be some chances are there's going to be some kind of proprietary element that you need to also get. So you're not just going to be in shipping repair return, shipping fee. You're going to be in that additional cost as well. So, you know, I still, my, my personal bike is a Scott addict, rim break. It's been broken two or three times. Luckily I work, but I don't, you know, I it's, it's my good weather road bike. I don't dream of a disc road bike for the summer. So it made a lot of sense to get it fixed because that bike serves that utility. So if you know, if it's a bike that you want to keep for a long time and you have components you like on it, then it's almost no question repair is usually the way to go. But if an upgrade is then your future and we can help you figure that out, Hey, then we're happy to do that too. So we talked a bit about the assessment process and the repair process, and you alluded to a couple of different options. You can just get the black carbon put on the frame, if you just kind of want that. You know, I don't care what my mountain bike looks like on the down tube kind of phenomenon. But I also saw on your site, some immaculate paint matching and repair work you've done on some beautiful bicycles. Are you guys doing that in house? Are you working with someone local to you? No, we do it all in house. The hard way, uh, growing our paint department was kind of a very hard and painstaking process because bike painting is it's socks. Um, it's super hard. Yeah, there's no shortcuts. And you know, you could go to an auto body shop, people that can paint cars, they all think they can paint bikes. And the idea of there's people that can paint flat things. There's people that paint round things. And there's two different words. And we know almost all the bike, major bike painters that are independent bike painters in the country as well. They'd say the same thing like spring a tube is so different spraying a quarter panel, a, you know, on like a card or something. And laying graphics is so hard. So we grew everything internally, painstakingly very, very painstakingly and learning how cheap paints will kind of screw you some days versus expensive paints or cheap clear codes versus expensive clear codes. And I don't think the average person knows how expensive paint or clear coat is, but some of our paints are, you know, if you're talking about like half a pint, you know, it's almost 70, 80 bucks. Uh, and our clear coats are almost $500 for a gallon. And it's like, yeah, they last a while, but they don't last that long. You're maybe talking like five to 10 full bikes, maybe, um, depending how many bronze and clear you want to shoot this. Stuff's just very expensive and the guns are expensive. You know, they're, you're in a thousand to 2000 bucks just for the gun air compressor. And Oh, I could go forever about this, but luckily we have a great painter in house. You could just freakishly max a match, everything under the sun, all the insane specialized, uh, glitter coats that are doing right now, the shimmer codes we've done all the Thermo chromic paints where they change color with different heat signature. Oh, Dan's bike actually changes with different colors. He does. Yep. Wow. All, I think I was looking at a picture of a [inaudible] on your site that was beautifully color match and had intricate pin, like a pin Stripe line through the color. It was, it was insane. And from the picture it looked brand new. Some of those coal Naga restorations are absolutely the fine are some of our painters finest work there, boy, they're not cheap. Um, but at that point, you know, and the owners even agree with us. It's like, you're doing a classic car at that point. So, you know, why would you want to do it inexpensively anyway, you want it to be proper and in its pristine condition and he has the ability to do it. Um, yeah, they're, they're, they're not cheap and they take a long time, but the end result is boy, if they look the third doing some of the photography around here, those are some of the best bikes to shoot. Cause it's an endless amount of detail that we have to do to them. So yeah, we, uh, we have quite the range of, of, uh, finishing that we're able to achieve here. Be it the most basic vinyl and, and get it out as quickly as possible to, you know, uh, hand pin striping [inaudible] but yeah, he does it all. It's pretty, it's pretty, pretty wild. Yeah. I'll put, I'll put some photos up on, on Instagram and Facebook and I'll obviously put your URL in the show notes so people can go over and it out before We go tonight, do you guys have any sort of funny or outlandish stories from the over 13,000 bikes you guys have inspected, that would be fun to share on the podcast. Poof, There's so many, we've seen stuff from a lot of pro racers, so like very household names, um, from the pro tour, even we even have one in the shop right now, those from the tour de France last year. Um, so do stuff on that level. I just saw there was a repair request from today of a guy that like ended while doing a manual at 25 miles an hour to show off is to show off in front of his 11 year old. Uh, I don't know. I mean, there's a lot of great stories are like peop bikes have gone through forest fires and boy, I dunno, what do you got damn. The one of our classic favorites is, uh, I think we tell this story every time, but it's, it's so great. Somebody dropped an industrial waffle iron on their top tube and broke it and that's all we got. And that's why it's one of my favorite stories because there's so much intrigue and mystery into the details of this story, full iron. Why, how big is it? How, how many waffles can it make? Why do you have, what were you doing? What kind of waffles did you make? Right. So that's the mystery also, where are they? Uh, that one's great. Um, some of boy, I mean, we've seen somebodies beloved house cat chew through their seat's day sounds. I mean, the stories we see you can't make up. Um, I'm also thinking of, um, on the inspection side, one of the thing, one time we, we, somebody brought in a damaged bike and it had some issues or in front of, uh, or excuse me, kind of like right behind the bottom bracket on the chain stay. And Sean did the ultrasound scan and was like, this is, I don't know about this. This is pretty bizarre. And right along the crack line, we found a piece of pre preg backing paper that wasn't mold that was molded into the laminate. Um, and Shaun's ultrasound readings were, were totally wild. He was like, I don't know what to say. I've never seen anything like this. And it was like, I forget what brand it was, but it was an older bike, like 2010 or 2009. Uh, yeah, prepregs backing paper in the laminate. And that's exactly where the damage occurred. Um, we've found tons of dirt in bikes from the factory. Those are Inside the frame, like closed off and we poured out like, I think it was like 90 grams of dirt. And we were like, okay, This bike is brand new. You're like, how did all this? And then also imagine you get the, uh, I drove my car into a parking garage. Well, daily, weekly, yeah. At least one at least once or twice a week. Every, every, every once a week. But that one, yeah, that's a full inspection. Those are always full inspections. So if you're listening and you did that, don't yeah. We know, you know, don't think it's going to be okay that you just hit your car into a house, even if it was only five miles an hour. Yeah. I just say you take like Moveable object of your house and like a 4,000 pound car and then a 20 pound bike. And you're like, alright, that's going to stop. But all that apparently. All right. Yeah. It's simple. All the time we saw, we, we have seen people doing like longer descents, uh, who have hit deer who have hit deer before. Uh, also also a full inspection, definitely full inspection. Those bikes can be pretty, I don't know, but sometimes we do the full inspection and Sean and I joke about this all the time. It's like, sometimes they're, there's nothing wrong with them and you know, it's, it's not every time we do a full inspection, the bike is completely smoked. Um, you know, oftentimes they're, they're totally okay. But at least people are able to walk away with that peace of mind. And, and now that now, now they know they have the safety to do all their favorite rides again. But yeah, we've seen so many wild things over the years. That's awesome. Well, I appreciate all the information you guys, there's a lot of fun for me to learn about carbon repair. I think one of the takeaways specifically for our listeners who are obviously the majority gravel, cyclists, is just pay attention to that tire diameter and mud damage. I have one more for you as well. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, drops chain stays. It's all the rage be careful. And how do you see that playing out with the drop stays? Cause that is a design feature in a lot of these gravel bikes. I know I was actually looking about like, I like to do a just review and analysis and thinking about drop chain stays versus res chain stays, you know, like on the Trek, uh, stash has a raised chain stay and I'm like, okay, that totally removes the chain suck issue. But with the drop chain state, it kinda like puts it more in harm's way. And I think people are trying to run a one buys system, which I love one by systems. But when you try to maximize your chain ring side, let's say you go to a 38 on a drop chain, stay on a like standard road with bike. You're playing with fire a little bit. Um, and you start to see, you know, like you're bouncing along. And even if you have a clutch or whatever, I don't think it really matters. Um, either way the chain kind of comes up a little bit on the bottom lower side of the chain ring and it just comes right into that chance today. So I would like to say like, give yourself A little more room or you may not be that. Okay. I dunno, stoked, but maybe run a slightly smaller chain ring. Like go down to six, maybe. Um, give yourself a little more room there. Just get that chain away from that drop chain state. Yeah. This comes from being a lot of these. Yeah. Next time I'm grinding some mud through my chain stays. I'm going to have a little bit of fear in my heart after talking to you guys. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. It's an easy fix. So just let us know Craig, you can just let us know, just keep pedaling if anything happened. Just peddle through it. That's my alright guys. And thank you for sharing so many of your connections with me. I've gotten a ton of of research done and a lot of people that have agreed to come on the show. And I would say mostly because of you and the positive words you've said about this show what gives man you know, I try to keep my reputation under the under the covers here.Mike Rey 2:41Absolutely. And I love helping out and I actually have more extensive list to share with you as well. People I think are very crucial in the Mustang community from day one, before the car was even built to the current day. She's going to tell you that story which is just just absolutely incredible that she's been such a Mustang fan for her whole life and never actually owned a Mustang until now. And it is a first generation Mustang. You know what some more we're going to talk about today too Doug is that I might be able to get you a reach out for Jack Roush Jr. being on the show. Definitely can reach out to jack for you and see if you'd like to do a episode with you.Doug Sandler 4:59So let's and I appreciate that very much. And that would be that would be a major win. So let's start there. Because I'm really curious because I really don't know a lot about Roush Performance. But you had approached me with maybe this is a subject on today's show. So I started doing some research and some background check about what Roush is all about. So why don't you tell me the position that you that you take about some of their products and then maybe we can share a little bit of your experience with them as well?Mike Rey 5:49Yeah, I was very fortunate to spend four years at Roush. I'm in the marketing department, basically running marketing being marketing manager. Great, great assets of people there. We had an amazing team to put a lot of cool stuff together and what Roush is, is Roush is a manufacturer, but they actually take the Mustang to the next level and now it's f 150s to the next level and they do Raptors and they're doing Super Duty so they keep expanding as they go. But so you're taking a really cool product and forgiving you and they're making it just a tad bit even better, if that's even possible, right? So like even rafter like what could you possibly do to a raptor? Well, that Ross record actually really, really does really well and really performs to the highest level.Doug Sandler 6:33Well, I'm looking at some of the products that they have online everything from spoilers to facials, two scoops to louvers to spoilers in the back and skirts I mean it's a pretty cool and they do a lot with it looks like exhausts and graphics and grills and all sorts of things too.Mike Rey 6:49And the number one thing is probably the superchargers So, you know they're partners with Ford Performance, doing their supercharger, which is one of the best selling superchargers there is on the market and gives us the Power and back. So my full warranty. One of the things I'm very proud of that Roush that I got to accomplish was there is to make the connection and bond between relish performance and for performance and title it partners in performance. So if you see that tagline anywhere that was one of my brainchild that I actually got per, you know, approved by Ford, Henry Ford and Pericak. And Jim Owens all got that approved for me. And that was it still to this day is partners of performance. So that forever linked Roush Performance and Ford Performance together.Doug Sandler 7:31So what's the connection between some of the classic car or some of the classic Mustang so even the first generations back to the to the mid 60s? What's the connection between a mid 60s owner and in a current owner Do you know of a later model or a late model Mustang Do you see a lot of overlap them repeating the purchase and getting now that they've had a classic ride they want something in addition to having that one that they keep in the garage and just kind of baby and love. They're having one that they can actually get out there and really enjoy the speed that they that That a late model can offer.Mike Rey 8:01Yeah, absolutely. So like the first gen owners definitely want to keep that and drive it around and show that off because that's their pride and joy and they want to be able to do that in like the local car shows, things like that. But if you're in Michigan and you want to drive out to California and you want a newer one, you know, you're not going to want to take that older one on that ride. And, you know, actually Roush offers for both people. So a lot of first generation cars are dropping what they call crate engines in there. Whether it could be a new Coyote with a Roush supercharger on it or an old 427 or something that you want to drop in. Roush still builds all those motors for all the old first gen cars and offers that's all the consumers that actually own those vehicles still, who want to do it and a lot of the big vehicles that you see across going across Barrett, the old Hot Rods and stuff or even 32 Fords things like that. All of a lot of them have Roush engines in it so that they're well known in that industry. And then in the newer phase, people are buying the Mustang automatically want to get the Roush exhaust on it are the Roush supercharger, things like that. So they're very, very well known throughout the whole community from the first generation to current.Doug Sandler 9:05Take me through a little bit of the process. So let's say that somebody that's in our listening community, which many people in our listening community have those first gen models. So let's just take a typical 65 or 66, classic, Mustang. And they want to do this what's the I'm not, I'm not holding you responsible for knowing the exact process that Roush goes through when they when they install or when they when they share a crate with you. But how does that process work? Like I would have no idea where to even begin on something like that. So where does somebody that's listening, even think about the opportunity to drop something Roush under the hood,Mike Rey 9:37They're usually at a lot of local shows. And that's you brought it up just like a perfect segue into a new one is Jim Kemp is the head of Roush engines, I can set up an interview with you too is that with him is that he can actually provide all that information in great detail but usually what happens is there's a website on Roush that you can get into the engine area. I'd have to get that for you they specific link for you. But also, they're usually at the shows like they were just recently at Barrett Jackson there at the Good Guys show, which is a lot of the older cars, if you will, first generations. And you can talk to them and get your specs and tell them what you're wanting. And then they can basically custom build the engine for you and put in your car. A cool story that we did that actually put this in effect, it's a more of a newer engine, but we put it into an older car. You ever heard of Jeff Allen, which is another list. He did a TV show that was called Chasing Cars. It was on TV A few years ago, and it ran like three or four episodes. You got to look him up. But when I was at Roush, he was doing a special Sema project and it was with a 63 Falcon. It's known as Ronin. And if you Google that you guys can see the pictures and everything what we did on that car and it was a 63 Falcon that he wanted to soup up and we put the 400 in it will put the Roush supercharger in it and the really cool thing is he notched the hood to where you could actually only see the Roush superchargers sticking out of the hood, that's all you see. So that was really Really cool and it won all kinds of awards at SEMA and it was one of the really crazy cool build but in like basically a first gen. Ford, you know from that from that area from 1963. So in that era of the first generation Mustang so that it just goes hand in hand with what we can do to customize it to whatever the customer wants.Doug Sandler 11:20It's amazing. I'm looking at some of the engines directly online right now and Ford Mustang community. I'll make sure I put a link in the show notes to to Roush engines, but it's Roushperformance.com/engine and literally it is a laundry list of every kind of engine that will that will get your eyes twirlin' here. It's everything from the 331SRX all the way up to the 5.0 Coyotes, amazing stuff in there. Wow this you know, this is the kind of stuff where I get in front of my computer and all of the stuff I have on my to do list for the day just kind of evaporates, sitting in front of the computer. Just looking at all the cool stuff on it and Again, these are these are crate engines. So these are these are brand new engines and amazing, amazing Look, I'm sure they make it. So what happens if you put something like this into into a classic Mustang? And again, I'm not expecting you know all the mechanical details of it and all as I certainly don't myself, but what happens if you put something like this into a car and the rest of the car isn't compatible meaning you don't have a transmission that can that can hold the torque that this thing is going to create or you don't have, you know the the right suspension to kind of handle this properly. What do you need to match everything up? I would assume, don't you?Mike Rey 12:33Yes, absolutely. Jim and his team will tell you like what's going to be needed to hold this car down to the ground. And then also there's other partners to like we have Gateway Classic Mustang, who another one I can get you there there but they specify and specifically in suspension and performance. So if you're doing any kind of racing, whether it be drag racing, whether it be road course racing, whether what it would be they are the pros that suspension for all Mustangs from first generation two currents, and the majority they would they do it first gen Mustangs, so they're out of the Missouri area and they just do great, great things that would complement a Roush engine going into a vehicle.Doug Sandler 13:12It's a it's amazing as again, as I'm looking at this, the technical specs of this stuff, the tech specs, it's 425 horsepower, Ford steel crankshaft it's Coyote engine 302. 425 horsepower, 475 foot pounds of torque. It's like, Oh my gosh, I like I said I could get lost in this in this forever. And I'm not a mechanical guy. But just the look and the feel of these. I mean, I could just imagine opening up my, my 65 convertible downstairs in the garage and just open it up and just seeing this brand new 5.0 in there. That would be crazy, ultra expensive. Crazy. Amazing.Mike Rey 13:48Well, then that also allows you to if you got, you know, like I said, you said you had talked to Tom Scarpello before and that's basically the old car outside, new stuff inside. So that would allow you to go from Michigan to California on a road trip.Doug Sandler 13:59Exactly. Yeah. That was Tom was a great guest from from Revology. I don't remember the exact episode number. I'll look it up. And I'll make sure I put that in the show notes as well. But yeah, really fun. So what else can you tell me about Roush because their products look really cool.Mike Rey 14:15So Roush is a lot. You know, they're known for engineering and every other thing they've been around for over 40 years, and been building cars since 1995. And now the big thing is, is that 150s with them, so it's at least when I left there, it was like 75% of sales were F150s. So three to one over Mustang, actually. So that's where the world's going is to the pickup truck era. And F150 was definitely the king for that. But yeah, I got the chance to work with Jack Roush Jr, who was absolutely amazing fun to work with. Get that super down to earth guy. A hell of a racer on the road course. I've been in the car with him on road course and just watched him lap people and we were in one of his Focuses. So and we're laughing must things with 800, 900 horsepower. That's how good Jack is. So I think you'd be a really really cool guest to be on but Roush offers basically anything you want whether it's a parts play, whether it's a whole vehicle, whether it's taking a vehicle and upgrading it afterwards. If you're doing a truck if you want to go off road, they offer the off road accessories for that the off road suspension. Everybody wants to Roush to exhaust on their vehicle whether it be Mustang or truck so yeah, definitely definitely the way to go and they have a lot of dealerships all around the country to more so than anyone else in the in the aftermarket industry.Doug Sandler 15:34Geez, thanks for all the information and for Mustang community if you're not in the market right now for a crate engine, but you do want a good tumbler they do have a really nice cup on their website and Roushgear.com also they have great shirts and hats, and even if you can't play the part by having a crate engine dropped into your dropped into your classic ride. You certainly can play the part by wearing the the very nice t shirt as well.Doug Sandler 16:00Yeah, I agree. I agree. So let's move over to to membership a little bit. Tell me a little bit about what's going on in the in the club scene we didn't really have a lot of time to talk last time, specifically about about MOCSEM, but I really do want to find out, you know a little bit more about the whole membership idea. There's probably a ton of people in our community that that aren't part of any Mustang clubs and, you know, maybe share some of the advantages and some of the stories that you have going on with your regional club.Mike Rey 16:24Let me share a few of my favorite things really quickly as there's been four huge events. That, to me stand out more than any. I've done hundreds of hundreds with the club over the last 15 years. But one was when I was presented with the Lee Iacocca award at the Mustang Memory Show. And one of my best friends John Clor, you know, was the one who surprised me and presented it to me at the show. So there's only about 100 people in the world that have that award. It doesn't exist anymore. To the Mustang community that's basically the Mustang Hall of Fame, if you will. So very, very honored to have That and I was surprised at the muscle memory show and John was the one actually presented to me, which ironically, takes me to the second event. It was our 50th Heroes banquet so celebrating 50 years of Mustang in 2014. We did a heroes banquet here the weekend of our show, and I in return got to present John me and Dave Pericak presented John with his Lee Iacocca was at that event, but that event is still titled and labeled as the greatest 50th anniversary Mustang events in the world that ever happened. And that was here in Dearborn, Michigan, during 2014, and it was our club who hosted that and ran it we have 60 different heroes from Gale Halderman and Hal Sperlich and Edsel Ford to the current team, which was the Pericak team. We had everybody throughout those 50 years. We had about 60 different people know from clay modelers to engineers to marketing team to Vice President. Everybody was there and We we set them up in a horseshoe shaped design out in the lobby after the banquet and let them sign autographs for everybody and created a keepsake for everybody to take. And they went around and they were there to almost two in the morning, starting at 8pm signing autographs, that's how long and everybody wanted to be with them and taking pictures and hearing stories. And it was just an unforgettable event and probably our most proud event we've ever put on as a Car Club. So those are things that cool that you get to come and see as a as a member that you get to enjoy. Another one was another no other Car Club can say this is we did a our general meeting inside the Ford World Headquarters. I touched on this very briefly at the last interview, but at the Ford world headquarters auditorium where we had Henry Ford, our Edsel Ford, we had Mark Fields, we had Dave Pericak, we had the list goes on and on and on. We had everybody you could possibly think of at the time that was available. So that was really, really cool. And so yeah, really, really great. And then the last event that I want to mention that we've done that was really cool was literally just last week. Last Tuesday, and I mentioned this before, we had Dave Pericak as our special guest speaker at our general meeting, which was held at Gateway Classic Cars in Dearborn. And he surprised everybody and brought out a Mach-E in person, for everybody just sit in feel touch and ask questions about and explain the reason and the process, why the Mustang name was attached, why, you know, and so many opportunities are against that. You get to explain the reason behind that. And I think it opened up a lot of people's minds about seeing a change everybody's mind because still, a lot of people, including myself, don't think the Mustang name should have been attached to that kind of vehicle. But I do understand the reasoning. I've accepted it and I'm okay with it. And he basically agreed with that. David great analogy stating, you know, if you go to your favorite amusement park like Cedar Point or something when you're a kid and they bring in a new ride, you know, do you absolutely hate it and want to go to war over it or you just don't ride it? You don't I mean, it's just an addition to the fun, it's not replacing anything. So it's not like you came into the amusement park and replace your favorite ride. It's not replacing Mustang, it's just an addition to and given another outlet. And you got to understand if they don't build the electric vehicles, they can't build their other Mustang. So the marquee is enabling them to keep building the GT 500 is the GT 350s, the Mustang GT, without these electric vehicles are not going to be able to do that anymore by federal mandate. So this is a part of it, and why not make a fun little section of it, and giving this Mustang performers that was going to do and this horsepower and torque in that thing is insane.Doug Sandler 16:42And I think it would be great to have a conversation with I think, you know, Jimmy DensmoreMike Rey 20:55I just talked to him a couple times this weekend. Tell him what a great job he did on I'm his interview with you because I listened to that yesterday too. Yeah, I know. I've known Jimmy I met him through Gale Halderman. I think Jimmy came in a couple years ago and you know, was was doing the book on Gale And but yeah, cuz I know Gale, probably for the last seven or eight years now. And you know, and heard a lot of the stories. So a lot of the stories Jimmy was telling you were absolutely true and fun, because I've actually heard those from Gale's mouth himself as well. One of the things that Jimmy didn't get into was about those myths, the myths that he was talking about. The one myth is that Mustang was named after an airplane. And it was, it was named after the horse when we we've been visiting Gale for the last maybe 5,6,7 years. We go down to his museum in barn once a year with the club. And afterwards after everybody leaves me and John Clor usually sit with Gale for an hour or two and just hear stories from a man he tells us about the Lee Iacocca days and spurling and all that. And we asked him about the horse and the one of the first visits we went there. He said, yeah, it was absolutely named for horse not after a plane so everybody tells you that. Don't believe that because Did you ever see a plane in any rendition or any form met on a car on a badge or anything like that it was it was always animals. And it was definitely named after the horse. So that's the guy that was on the team that will know it. And it came from the horse's mouth, as we call it.Doug Sandler 22:11And pardon the pun, no pun intended, but there was a fun. So tell me a little bit more about just how how, you know, you have a lot of these regional clubs and a lot of the regional clubs don't quite have the pull that a club that would be in Southeast Michigan has. So what do you say to those that are either running or in clubs? I mean, what's some of the what's some of the formula for success when it comes to running a successful club?Mike Rey 22:34That's a perfect segue of exactly where I want to talk about next is in coming February 9 this year, we have a summit that we put together started about 10 years ago. For all other clubs that are welcome and any club business listening here would like to join us. Please send me a note in the next week. And, Doug, if you could share my email with them. That'd be great. February 9th, we invite all different club heads in the Ford and Mustang world to this summit to share best practices. things they may need help with things to cross promote for each other for events, get to know each other and see how we can help support each other's events and answer questions or give them different avenues of where they might, you know, like to feel comfortable with or to learn things from. And yes, we people say, you know, we're spoiled. Oh, you guys got it made because you're in Dearborn and I mentioned this before. No, we have to actually go out and do what we need to do to actually make things happen. But like, a couple years ago at our show, you just seen the the bullet that just sold at Mecum? Correct. So Sean's car. Sean's a good friend Sean is a Club member of ours. Sean brought the Bullit out. We had Craig Jackson bring the little red before it was restored and that was just unveiled last weekend. Little Red was there. The Bullit was there. The 10 million Mustang was there. Larry Shinoda, his prototype boss real to car and we have all those guys there. We had Henry Ford, the dueces car. They're all at our shows over different years and to have those kind of special cars is just absolutely insane to me. And like you said, they're all first generation cars. And you can't see those at any other show. After our show last year when we had most of those, John Clor got just bombarded by other clubs asking, how do we get all those cars at our show? is simple answer was you don't. Everything has to basically fall in line, and a lot of hard work behind it to get things lined up. And we are very fortunate to have Woodward now, the same weekend as our show. So a lot of muscle cars coming for Woodword, and we try to talk to those people to try to extend it another day. Now people say well, that's why you get 1000 plus cars at your show. That Woodword weekend only started in 2014. So from 1975 to 2014. We were not the same weekend as Woodward we were always the weekend before. And two of those shows before that weekend started. We hit over 1000 cars so and now you're out. Are you out in California? Correct? So you're very familiar with the Knott's Berry show that has been going on for many years.Knott's Berry has always been the number one one day largest Ford show in the country. Well Knott's is taking a breather now and trying to get you know some new things basically reinvented if you will, and they're going to they're going to come back shortly but I know they're going to be taking a year or two off. So currently right now we are the largest one day all Ford event in the entire country. And that's how it the Ford world headquarters every AugustDoug Sandler 25:26That's incredible. Yeah, I think that a lot of people are going to say hey, because of your location where you are in the country. It makes it quite easy, not easy, but it makes it a lot easier for you and I would say that hey there's a lot of there's a lot of excuses people could have for not building their club the right way or maybe finding the right mix of guests to come in. But I'll tell you there's a lot to be said about tenacity and and just kind of staying in the game and and promoting your club to those that are important. I have another show called The Nice Guys on Business podcast and we're about 1000 and some episodes in Which game afforded me the opportunity to put that kind of say, okay, that's running over its own steam to start this show and look until you start reaching out to guests that are in favor and guests that you really want to hear. You can't be shy about it, you got to sink your teeth in and make it makes it happen.Mike Rey 26:17You know, passion is a huge thing, you really can't teach it, you got to be born with it. But anybody who usually steps into the club lead and not i'm not saying everybody because there's definitely exceptions. But usually, if you're stepping up to that role, you got to have some passion behind you to want to do that. And the passion will take you a long way I can, I can definitely vouch for that. And so being a club leader, if I can speak as a leader to other club leaders is see where you can give the most benefits to your members. So one called might be very interested in racing, so try to put the best racing events together. And another one might be well we might like to be in a big car. So let's do that. Some people like to do road trips or overnight so you know focus on that where you can you know, cater to what their their wants are as many preserve your club. And that will go a long way. And then they're there, their word of mouth will actually, you know, expand your club, gain more interest and make things, you know, a little bit more exciting within the club and to actually keep gaining traction and build the club as well.Doug Sandler 27:12What are some definite don'ts? Some things that you have tried that you said, Oh, well, that didn't work. We kind of fell flat on their face to face with that one. Is there anything that's happened in your club?Mike Rey 27:21Yeah, well, you know, there's, here's, here's the thing right now, and not nothing we've done, but I've watched other clubs do it and these other clubs that, you know, I'm talking and I won't name names right now, but there's a couple clubs Now regarding this Mach-E. And I love both of them. I get along with both of them, but one of them has they've taken stances and one fully embracing it Once fully not and like you're not allowed in the club anymore. If you have a Mach-E. So the market is not welcomed in their club. And the other one is absolutely and they're getting. So for the people that are welcoming it are they're getting from the people who hate it against it, and then the people who are banning it the people who like it are against it. So one thing that I'm just trying to do what I've been putting out there is our club is not like that I am I, I don't want to, I don't hope it a word it wrong. But I don't want to be a dictatorship into a club, we're not going to force you to like something, we're not going to force you to hate something, everybody has their own opinion. And we're going to support it either way. But, you know, our club doesn't want to take a stance and to do that, it's just like politics anywhere else you go, you know, I mean, you're not going to say, this club is all republican or this club is all democratic, you know, you don't want to do anything like that. It just opens up so many different cans of worms. So for me, personally, is what can I do in the best interest of the club always and to make the members happy and to make them feel good, whether they agree with something or not, you know, I mean, so. Like I said, I've mentioned it many times, I don't think the Mustang name should be attached to Mach-E because it's been the hottest topic. And our club is actually one of the few clubs that actually has a small advantage. I think I told you this before too. It's like 60% in favor of the car 40% against, so most clubs are 80% against and 20% for it. You don't I mean, so But like I said, it's just that it's a topic now that's going on, but You know, it's created a lot of conversation within club heads, which is really, really good. But like I said, To each his own, anybody can do something like that. But no, I mean, it has nothing personal against me. I'm not going to let a name of a vehicle, ruin lifelong friendships over something like that.Doug Sandler 29:16I think that's, I think that's where it is very well. And again, we all have to get along here. No haters is a part of this. If people have differing opinions, that's okay. And just let them voice their opinion. I won't mention the club the the place that I was, but I was at this and somebody got up and he just started like preaching to the people that are there and not about this particular car, but about a subject that that we have, we've got to take a stance and I kept thinking, we don't have to take a stance. This is my first meeting here and you're really not even making me feel welcome. It wasn't about me, right? But I just felt so uncomfortable. Just the fact that he was taking everything so personally at this club meeting, everybody, we just got to relax a little bit, just chill out.Mike Rey 29:57And you know, Doug, I would really really, really hope you can Try to put it into your schedule to make it down to Mustang Memories this year because I think you could go live there with so many first generation owners to share about their experience to share their camaraderie with their their friends who are parked next to them and all that I just think you're you know, you see so much eye candy for miles I it would be fun and you get to meet so many great people from just being at the event.Doug Sandler 30:22I completely agree with the end. I'm trying to look up the date for that right now.Mike Rey 30:26August 16th, and it's at the Ford world headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.Doug Sandler 30:29See if I can get my press pass all lined up for that.Mike Rey 30:32I got you covered on that. And then here's what the theme is that we're doing this year for that is 65 years of Thunderbird, 60 years of the Ford Falcon and 30 years of the Seven-Up Mustang which not too many people are aware of or are doing anything special for so we're celebrating 30 years of the Seven Up Fox Body Mustang at our event this year.Doug Sandler 30:51Wow. That's very cool. I enjoy the sound of the seven up Mustang. I wonder why I haven't heard of that.Mike Rey 30:57It's a 1990 Mustang was a special edition that they were going to do for NCAA March Madness back in 1990. And the the promo fell through somehow, but the cars were already made. So they were at the dealers there a dark green car with white interior, you know, seven up colors basically, if you will. And, and there was, you know, only a certain amount made, and they were only made for that one year. And like I said it was very, very limited. So they're called the Seven Up Mustang and very, very cool. And they have their own groups and their own clubs, but to do a national event for them. This is the first one that I know of right now that we're celebrating 30 years this coming year for themDoug Sandler 31:33Nice. Love it. And I'm looking at pictures of that right now online as well. It's a very cool looking car Fox Body 5.0 Are they all convertibles? Did you say Are they all convertible?Mike Rey 31:41All convertibles. And you know, Doug, I don't know if you were gonna get to this or ask this. But I was listening to Jimmy's interview yesterday, and you asked about if you could be at a table with five people.Doug Sandler 31:51Hey, that was my next question. You can you can take me there though. Let's do so let me let's set up the question properly. So I give I'm gonna get Mike the ability to choose five guests alive or dead to have a dinner or a conversation with a talking Ford Mustangs? Who would he pick? And I'm I'm really curious because you've named so many of those people that were on not only Jimmy's list but on many of our guests list that have come on so you're already friends with many of them. You might not have to pick them who would you pick?Mike Rey 32:18Well, the funny thing is, is I really truly have seven and six of them I know personally, I'd have met one was passed away and I never got to me and that my biggest regret in the industry but so for my list is Gale Halderman, Hal Sperlich, John Clor, Dave Pericak, Amy Boylan, Carroll Shelby, and Jack Roush.Doug Sandler 32:35You know we got a really crowded table. Should we go? Should we go buffet style for this? Are we still in French service?Mike Rey 32:41Well, let me let me tell you the reasoning behind each of them. So all right, John, to me is the most well known in my opinion, Mustang expert there is in the entire world. That's my opinion may not be in fact or other people may not agree but in my opinion, he is the most knowledgeable man on the Ford Mustang there is In the world. Dave Pericak has the biggest and baddest things that are coming out now been, like I said, had the greatest launches with Ford on the current day. Hal Sperlich and Gale Halderman had the greatest launches of the original Mustang, the first gen and the greatest way. And so they can actually share a lot of that. Amy Boylan, to me is the most successful woman in Mustang history. And she could share her female input of if you will, and and how to make businesses work and how to make things special and exciting. Carroll Shelby, obviously the absolute legend, he's the one I never did get a chance to meet and my biggest regret in life is I had one chance to meet them and I couldn't make it to the event. And I never got to meet Carroll. And then I also had the honor of working with Jack Roush and Steve Saleen. But Jack Roush is just so amazing and his ideas. Jack is quiet. Just so super quiet, but very observant, observant and some as a tack. So he's listening. He's taking everything in and when Jack needs to talk, he goes again. what he's talking about and his ideas always usually turned into gold and still to this day the number one winning NASCAR owner in historyDoug Sandler 34:08That is great and what a great list and we'll give you the will give you the latitude to have an extra couple people at the table I'm thinking that if you send out the invitations maybe not all of them would be available but I'm hoping that they would all be available at the same time how what a cool dinner that would beMike Rey 34:40I'm sure I can get John to have Ford pick up that expense if we can hit up we can get those guys together.Doug Sandler 34:44Yeah, hey, listen if it if it could be my personal mission to put all seven of well, I can't put Carroll in the room. Well, I don't know if I can. I know some people that know you. I mean, you know all these people, you'd be able to invite them so maybe I'm going to use you as my liaison. To him I think we could. How cool would it be if we were able to actually put this together?Mike Rey 35:04Oh, absolutely. You know what, and I me and John can absolutely kind of try to work on this. Now Hal Sperlich is very tough but I've got to meet Hale on four or five different occasions. the saddest time was actually at the Lee Iacocca funeral, this is not a thing. So, we were contacted by Ford to provide first generation Mustangs for the Lee Iacocca funeral to be on display our club one so and when I walked in the door the first two people I see were Hal Sperlich and Gale Halderman so I got to talk to both of them and great length there as well. But yeah, those guys are great another guy who never comes out of hiding as John Colletti but he would be a special guest for your show as well and I think we can try to reach out to him and see if he doesn't he doesn't like coming out in person. But you might do a phone call.Doug Sandler 35:44I heard the same thing about about how because when I when I was talking to to Jimmy who wrote the book with Gale's cousin he was saying that, that how was it is a tough guy to get it to get ahold of now Dale, Gail is is is a little bit a little bit easier but but not quite the same with with Hal so we'd have a challenge with him but I'm up for the challenge.Mike Rey 36:16I am as well and I'm trying to actually get them to come speak at a meeting this year. So me and John are already gonna be talking to him. So let me see what we can do. If we can get him on the call. Again, like I talked about, we're actually filming the back, behind the scenes kind of about this podcast, and earlier Jill and I were talking about this and I said, "This is a perfect Land Academy member." Jill DeWit: Right. Steven Butala: They're doing well financially. They're already having some success in their life, regardless of whether it's a great job, or you own another company, but those types of people seem to be the superstars in our group. Jill DeWit: Exactly. Steven Butala: They're really familiar with the nuts and bolts of how to run stuff and be successful, and they had what it takes or have what it takes to do something else. And now they're applying all that, their personal style of how to do this with buying and selling real estate and they're just killing it. Jill DeWit: Well, and they're simply just looking forward. They're not just sitting there working their day job thinking, "Well, I guess this is it." I mean, a lot of people that's what they do. But to be sitting there taking a step back going, "All right, I'm actually doing okay. I need to be doing something else because I'm not getting ahead like I should. There's more." Steven Butala: Right. So the rental trap, in my opinion, is this the meat of the show? Jill DeWit: Go for it. Steven Butala: This is the meat of the show. The rental trap, the technical definition of it is this. When you are renting and the percentage of your rent is, as a percent of your income, is more than 20%. That's actually my recommendation. It should never be more than 20%. So how do you do this if you live in a very expensive city? Well, you have roommates. Or, "Oh, that's great Steve, but I have a family and I have three kids and I can't just go have roommates.

Sean is an experienced mortgage professional and entrepreneur who didn’t set out to be a business owner, but instead saw how wrong others were doing it and wanted to do things different and better. Sean graduated college in 2000, worked in a restaurant, and enjoyed it because it allowed him to live the college lifestyle while making more money than most of his friends who had “real jobs”. While working at the restaurant/ bar, Sean had a customer who had been trying to hire him since his sophomore year of college, and thought Sean would be a great fit for the mortgage industry. September 11th happened and overnight the college students that had been coming into the bar and were thought to have unlimited bank accounts, because of their parents, were told to stop spending money. It was like the money went away. So Sean decided to start a new journey, and took his customer up on the offer to hire him for the mortgage industry. Sean moved to St. Louis and in 9 months, discovered everything that was wrong with the mortgage business, as he mentions in the podcast interview. Sean wanted to help people so he left the company he was with and started working for other companies that he thought were better, until finally he opened his own company called Monster Mortgage in 2005. In 2009 he joined with USA Mortgage and recently celebrated 10 years with the company. Because of the many experiences he has had in the mortgage industry, and because of his desire to help others, Sean Zalmanoff decided to start Next Level Loan Officers in 2017.
