Text “Do people even want to know about some of these issues? Because I think some of the meat production concerns, it's kind of like people would rather in some cases, I think some people might not really want to know all the nitty gritty. They don't want to know how the sausage is made. That poses an interesting question and challenge about how you communicate about some of these issues, when maybe there's a resistance among a subset of people who don't want to know more.” - Patti Truant Anderson Today's episode is the final installment in our special four-part series where we take a deep dive into the food system with experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Our guest is Patti Truant Anderson, a senior program officer at the Center and a faculty associate in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Patti's work focuses on public health risks, environmental challenges tied to food production, and how to communicate these critical issues more effectively. Patti and I explore how polling helps uncover public perceptions around food systems and why the country isn't as polarized on these issues as we might think. We also talk about the challenge of engaging people who may resist learning about the harsh realities of our food system. This episode is not just about data—it's about how we can foster a shared understanding and move forward, even in times of deep political division.

School leaders say punishing families of truant kids won't fix the reasons why they're bunking off school in record numbers. A new report by the Education Review Office shows close to 80,000 kids were chronically absent in Term Two, more than twice what it was 10 years ago. Mary Argue reports.
A staggering 80,000 school students were MIA for more than three weeks of Term 2 this year. That's like waking up one morning and the entire population of Palmerston North city just disappeared. A new report from the Education Review Office said chronic student absences have doubled in the last decade and things are at crisis point. It said intervention is often too late, with attendance services overwhelmed and kids falling through the gaps. Auckland City Education Services Manager Karyl Puklowski spoke to Lisa Owen.
SONNETCAST – William Shakespeare's Sonnets Recited, Revealed, Relived
Although at first glance Sonnet 101 can stand on its own, it so closely connects to Sonnet 100 that it really in all likelihood should be considered to form with it a pair within this group of four sonnets that they are both part of. Like Sonnet 100, it addresses itself to Shakespeare's Muse – his poetic inspiration – in a series of rhetorical questions that seek to encourage her to return to him to write further poetry for and about his young lover. In doing so, it purports to offer a possible explanation for the Muse's absence, but immediately rejects this as unsatisfactory, reminding the Muse of her duty to give the object of his love longevity way beyond his own presence on earth.
The Associate Education Minister says the Government, schools, parents and students all have a part to play in attendance. The Government's instructing schools to have Stepped Attendance Response plans by 2026. It comes as students around the country ditch school for the School Strike for Climate today. Associate Minister David Seymour told Mike Hosking schools should mark that as an unjustified absence. He says for people to keep their living standards and emit less, we need a lot of science, and school's a good place to learn that. Schools have also been instructed not to take teacher-only days in term time, unless authorised by the Minister. Seymour told Hosking the Government has a role in introducing more prosecutions and support for schools. He says the point of the STAR system is it sets out that the schools have a role - and they need to take that seriously. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My disagreement with David Seymour on truancy has been short-lived this week - because I could not agree more with him today. Those kids out bunking school today so they can strike for the climate should be marked down as truant: Explained but unjustified absence. I think I'm less tolerant of it today than I was when these shenanigans first started up because at least the ones who were striking back in 2019 when their messiah Greta Thunberg was leading them seemed to be genuinely motivated by the delusion that the opinion of children counted. Now though, the reality must have set in. They can't apply enough political pressure to actually affect change. You can have as many children out striking on the streets as you like - if they can't vote, it doesn't matter. Plus, we have a truancy crisis. We've been talking about this for months now. Regular attendance at school has fallen from 70% in 2015 to 40% at last count in 2022. The truancy crisis is more of a pressing threat to their future than the climate crisis. They are frankly at greater risk of being unable to do maths than they are at risk of a wave eroding mummy and daddy's beach house. What are their parents thinking allowing them to do this? What a shocking attitude towards their education at a time when everyone in this country knows they need every minute in the classroom they can get. Anyway, my favourite part of their strike is that they have now expanded their kaupapa. No longer is this just a strike about the climate - it is now also about toi tu te tiriti, it is about freeing Palestine, ending the fast-track approvals bill, keeping the ban on oil and gas, and lowering the voting age to 16. It's about everything, basically. Everything except the most important thing they could be doing as children... learning. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Washington, school districts are working on how they interact with truant students. The state has laws in place that allow for school districts to work with kids and understand why they’re missing school so often. Rules include referring students to community engagement boards and working with juvenile court. But district success with current policies vary widely from county to county, and some kids are falling through the cracks. Kelsey Turner has covered this issue as an investigative reporter at InvestigateWest. She joins us with details.
It has been over a year since I've released a chapter in the Weirdling Woods series - but I'm working on it right now. It likely won't be done tonight, but very possibly tomorrow. It's so easy to push this stuff to the side when the only person demanding results is yourself. So many other things take priority! It'll feel good to get back to putting this together today/tomorrow though! This will be chapter 6. While the story is self-contained and doesn't require you to have heard the other entries, there are a couple of things that are referred to that might confuse you if you had not heard the previous episodes. Abstract: Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant genetic neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG expansion in the Huntingtin (HTT) gene, translating to an expanded polyglutamine tract in the huntingtin (HTT) protein. Age at disease onset is correlated to CAG repeat length, but varies by decades between individuals with identical repeat lengths. Genome-wide association studies link HD modification to DNA repair and mitochondrial health pathways. Recent clinical studies show elevated DNA damage in HD, even at the premanifest stage of disease. One of the major DNA repair nodes influencing neurodegenerative disease is the PARP pathway. Accumulation of poly ADP-ribose (PAR), produced by PARP1 and PARP2, has been implicated in the pathology of Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases, as well as autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia. We report that HD mutation carriers have lower cerebrospinal fluid PAR levels than healthy controls, starting at the premanifest stage. Patient-derived fibroblasts have reduced PARP1/2 activity and elevated DNA damage, while elevated PAR levels are only revealed upon inhibition of PAR degradation. These phenotypes are rescued by moderate huntingtin level reduction via the huntingtin-lowering splice modulator drug, LMI070 (Branaplam). As a direct mechanism, we have defined a PAR-binding motif in huntingtin, detected huntingtin complexed with PARylated proteins in human cells during stress, and localized huntingtin to mitotic chromosomes upon inhibition of PAR degradation. Direct huntingtin PAR binding was measured by fluorescence polarization and visualized by atomic force microscopy. These results provide insight into a very early molecular mechanism of HD, suggesting possible targets in HD to design early preventive therapies. Copy rights belong to original authors. Guest Host: Patrick Block Playing hooky, listeners? The Truant Officer will deliver you where you're supposed to be: listening to this episode! This themed episode looks at Barks' 3 stories that were all about truancy, where the nephews ditch school! "Truant Officer Donald" is probably the most famous, but don't sleep on the other two! Revisiting these three similarly-themed stories is a great way to explore how Barks was able to develop fresh plotlines over the years. And the subject of Truant Officers seems like such a weird time capsule now (though technically they still exist in the U.S.).

Welcome to the TBC Classic podcast where it's not my opinion that counts - but yours! Each episode Josh chats with the WoW Classic community on the issues surrounding The Burning Crusade. Today we talk about a big issue that on face value seems to only affect one region of the world, but actually might have much more wide spread ramifications. The Oceanic PvP battlegroup was stealth merged with the NA battle groups overnight, and brought much higher latency along for the ride, much to the chagrin of much of the Oceanic community. This talk covers some of the frustrations of the players, as well as giving contrarian views. After that, we also talk about the energy issues surrounding feral druids right now and why the druids are begging for a change that Blizzard didn't seem to have an issue with when Paladins were asking for it. Our Brainy Lecture peers into black holes and encounters Spaghettification, but no fear, as with any pasta based cosmological encounter we have a bonus sauce for the occasion. In our songs under the microscope we probably read way more into Rupert Holmes's lyrics than is probably sensible, but it does seem that Mozart ripped off the song for his own Cosi Fan Tutti. In A Sauce, A sauce, my kingdom for a sauce we make the simple yet stunning Red Pepper Sabayon and we uncover a medical theory to Explain Tintin's perpetual youth and lack of interest with women.
Truant to bez wątpienia dynamiczna postać w świecie muzyki elektronicznej. Zaowocowało to niedawno powstałym projektem EQUALIZED, w którym zaprasza reprezentantów Londyńskiej sceny muzyki elektronicznej do Polskich klubów. Jak określić obecny styl Patryka? Kobo Writing Life Director Mark Lefebvre interviews Johnny B. Truant author of the Fat Vampire series, and co-author of The Beam and Unicorn Western. The two discuss: How Johnny is continuing and concluding the Fat Vampire saga, which began as a joke during a discussion on the Self-Publishing Podcast, but became a series featuring a loveable, sympathetic and genuine hero (Reginald) rather than just a simple series of fat jokes. Johnny's evolution as a writer – specifically, how Johnny's first novel, The Bialy Pimps, described as “Clerks” in a bagel shop, took him twelve years to publish it; compared to the incredible weekly word count he is currently producing (ie, 270,000 words for the Fat Vampire series in a single year) Giving oneself permission to simply write fast Johnny's first collaborative novel project (along with Sean Platt) entitled Unicorn Western, and the hilarious origin story of how the series stemmed from a research argument on the Self-Publishing Podcast that led Dave to crack a joke about unicorns appearing in a western. The Beam, an intellectual science-fiction series that Johnny is co-writing with Sean Platt How outlining, or creating “beats” for a story helped Johnny to write fast Johnny's continuing experiments with his writing, including the layout and placement of the tools, such as keyboard, monitor, etc Eminem as Johnny's “go-to” musical artist to listen to while he is writing Johnny's evolving philosophy on pricing strategies and funnels for writers, including making the first book in various series free The call to action including choice of links to the other books and bundles in a book published as part of a series. How the product image for The Beam books one through six is a three dimensional image conveys something one might normally only see when holding or looking at a physical boo How there is no instant fix or easy solution, but that being successful requires thinking long term, being patient and involves a lot of hard work The satisfaction of helping other writers that Johnny receives from producing the Self-Publishing Podcast For this episode's side-bar note, Mark speaks about social media strategies, including how it's not about “broadcasting” a message (such as “please buy my book”) but, rather, engaging with and participating and adding to a community (with a reference to Episode 004 with Mitch Joel) OTHER LINKS/RESOURCES Johnny's books on Kobo The Self Publishing Podcast Episode 003 of KWL Podcast (with Johnny's podcast pals Sean Platt and David Wright)
