[Title]: The Sober Black Girls Club: Embracing Sobriety, Authenticity, and Joy with Khadi A. Oluwatoyin Khadi Oluwatoyin, a Nigerian-American, was born and raised in the heart of New York but is currently living in Tulsa Oklahoma, home of Black Wall Street and first settled by the Lochapoka Band of Creek Native American tribe. Khadi is an attorney, mental health and sobriety advocate, consultant, community builder, and social entrepreneur. Her work over the last few years has focused on increasing the wellness of Black girls, women, femmes, non-conforming folks, and queer folks of color. She explores the transformative power of vulnerability, authenticity, and self-acceptance in her path towards sobriety. In honor of Black History Month, joining “Addiction Talk” are Khadi A. Oluwatoyin and J. Nicole Jones from the Sober Black Girls Club, a collective that provides resources and support for Black girls, women, femmes and non-binary folks who are in recovery or considering sobriety.Khadi founded Sober Black Girls Club in 2018 after addressing her own struggles with alcohol. It was during college that she discovered alcohol quelled the depression she's experienced since childhood, but it wasn't until after graduating from law school that she began drinking excessively. She sought help for her alcohol use in 2018, and noticing the lack of culturally adequate support for sober Black women, she created Sober Black Girls Club.Sober Black Girls Club also has an accompanying podcast of which J. Nicole is the co-host. J. Nicole's experience with alcohol began during her freshman year of high school, where heavy drinking was common among her friend group and the basketball team she was a member of. Her basketball career extended into college where the drinking was also commonplace. Though people expressed their concerns over her drinking, she ultimately wanted to better herself and became sober at age 23 during her senior year of college. In this episode, they both share their respective journeys, why cultural support is critical for those seeking sobriety and the importance of community and growth in recovery.
In today's episode, I share a bit of the more personal parts of my life. Last week I celebrated three years of sobriety, and while it may not be obvious how this ties into language learning, I can say that the link between these two things is very strong for me. I can say for sure that my early experiences learning Italian while living in Italy had a strong impact on my self-doubt, which had a strong impact on how much and how often I drank in order to escape the stress and pressure I put on myself, the raw feelings of vulnerability and failure, and so much negative self-talk. And I can say for sure that how much and how often I drank had a strong negative impact on my language learning because, while I was trying to escape my negative thoughts, I also escaped the positive ones, and I masked the joy of progress I was making and the pride of what I was accomplishing in my language. So this soberversary was a perfect time for me to reflect on the things that contributed to my downward spiral, with both alcohol and languages, and what I've done to start creating a life from which I don't want to escape. It's not a far stretch for me to see similarities between my journey to and through sobriety and my language learning journey, and some of the tools I used to get and stay sober have also worked for helping me improve my mentality about languages. Thank you for listening to this vulnerable yet uplifting episode. I hope you get something out of it and are more inspired to create a joyful life for yourself with languages and beyond. My guest today is Khadi A. Oluwatoyin, who is the founder of Sober Black Girls Club – a platform for Black women and non-binary people who are sober, sober curious, or even just thinking about putting down the bottle.Khadi was raised in a strict Muslim household, and alcohol was not part of her world growing up. But within hours of arriving at college, she had her first drink – and so began her career as a heavy binge drinker. She shares the specific solution that alcohol provided for her: it was a way to put down the high-achieving, perfectionist tendencies that she developed as a kid to mask the impact of her abusive childhood. As well as hearing her personal story, I wanted to learn from Khadi about the specific challenges of Black women in sobriety – and we get into topics such as the myth of the Black superwoman, and why AA tends to be so white, and why creating more inclusive sober spaces is not always the answer. In the episode we discuss:-Becoming a high achiever in school to mask the impact of her traumatic childhood-The immediate relief she felt on taking her first drink at college-Perusing a career in law – and what makes this a heavy-drinking profession-Why early intervention can prevent people from developing more serious substance use disorders-Why alcohol addiction is often not spoken about openly among the Black community-Being the only Black person at the rehab facility she went to, and why this is so common-Why it takes so long for high functioning addicts to get the help they need-Her experience of AA – and why she knew this program would never work for her-Why it was having no more goals to reach for that tipped her into addiction-Mental health conversations in the black community-Why Black women's self-worth is so tied up with being busy and helping others-Why race is integral to both the causes of and recovery from addiction-What's in her Sober Black Girls recovery toolkit – and why creating SBG has been part of thisLearn more about Khadi and her work HERE and follow her on Instagram @soberblackgirlsclubAnd big thanks to Lyres and Three Spirit for partnering on this episode!Discover Lyres non-alcoholic spirits at Lyres.com and visit lyres.com/sobercurious to sign up for a special 15% discount code. In this episode I talk with Carolyn Collado (they/them), the founding steward of Recovery for the Revolution. They are a queer, non-binary Afro-Taino neurodivergent human in long-term recovery. They believe recovery from a decolonized, anti-oppression lens can point the collective towards liberation. We cover a lot of different topics in this conversation including what it means to be embodied, tips on how to practice embodiment, and why AA isn't for everyone. Our community shoutout for this episode goes to La Conextion and Sober Black Girls Club. Check them out and send them some love!

Today's conversation is with Khadi Olagoke, founder of Sober Black Girls Club. What started out as a blog about wanting to get sober while she was still drinking is now a community and resource for Black women everywhere who have questions about getting sober and alcoholism. It was great to get her perspective. "Sobriety takes work. Self-esteem takes work. Figuring out who you are takes work." It was a great conversation. Thanks for listening.
